Have you ever heard of Resolution? Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson are some of my favorite directors, and I think you'd really enjoy their movies.
The void, ginger snaps trilogy, the others, Salem's lot, what we do in the shadows, repo! the genetic opera, suspiria, and the love witch
I’d love to see a video on Doctor Sleep.
Slither is early sleepover gold. Just enough gore to get the party started, just enough humor to get everyone comfortable.
I couldn’t have said better! High school memory vibes (I’m so old now)
I watched this movie in middle school, and we bought tons of candy and treats. I remember not even having opened any of it because we were so disgusted by this movie
Man you 2 are old, I was watching this movie when I was around 5 😂, I watched it about 5 times before I ended up getting bored of it and putting it with the movies in my head I thought were never real.
I agree...one of my favorites.
Oh my god yes
Saying James Gunn's career is what Kevin Smith could have had if he'd stayed focused was brutal. Brutally honest, perhaps, but still.
oh man :( i love kevin smith, honestly. I like that he LOVES what he does and I really don’t think it’s too late for him or anything. all it takes is one hit movie.
I think both Kevin Smith’s projects Tusk and Red State were dope, but he failed tremendously with Yoga Hosers
@@denizdemir9255 that's the thing though. One Hit movie would possibly be a fluke or a quirk. It's no guarantee that he'd want or be able to replicate it as he is now
@@charlespuruncajas9663 that movie was terrible but i still laughed my ass off at it when i couldnt sleep at 3-4 in the morning. That dude loves making fun of Canadian stereotypes and his daughter's deadpanning was hilarious.
Love Kevin but when he said it my brain instantly clicked all the pieces into place.
"I'm the host for an alien parasite, y'all!"
I understood that reference.
@@STFUppercut69 Rick and Morty?
@@KingNexusMOCs Nah, Guardians of the Galaxy, where Yandu (same actor) screams out: "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all"

@@STFUppercut69 just had to get a Toy Story one in there too huh? 😂
I particularly like the film named at 5:01. Title(Year) was such a masterpiece
What a classic!
Damn it i wanted to type that
You have made me sad
I totally forgot that film! Sweet memories 😂
It's the best film by Director
"Worms driving my friends around like skin cars, Brenda exploding like a water balloon, spitting shit at us melting us like cottage cheese, and now I've got no GOD DAMN MR.PIB!" This movie has some of the best quotable lines outside of 80's cinema.
Gunn is a genius writer.
"General term meaning outer space fucker"
Id be pissed too mr pibb is fucking bomb
The DVD cover used to terrify me as a kid. Like, getting a bath was a terrifying prospect for years afterward.
That poster creeped me out too!
@Prince CanuteVA
If that creeps you out, NEVER watch Cronenberg's 'Shivers'; it's the original "parasite in the bathtub" scene.
Im convinced literally anything Nathan Fillion touches turns to gold
Hear hear!
He was great in Buffy
Nathan Fillion is a goddamn national treasure.
@@iAmPimmiCue I absolutely HATE his character in Buffy. Which is a huge compliment considering he's a baddie
I really, really want to agree with you... But have you seen The Rookie? I'm not blaming him, just think he's been wasted too often.
I remember watching this movie and thinking: “Damn, that alien has entirely too many stages in its lifecycle.”
aw shit it's tremors

"I'm sorry, John"
This movie is just so criminally underrated -- awful, shocking, transgressive stuff, but it manages to walk that knife's edge to keep from alienating the viewer entirely. Love your analysis as usual, and it makes me happy to see one my fav horror flicks show up on your channel!
Dude, the practical effects were so well executed. Thank you for reminding me of this gem.
I've always loved how the effects looked in this movie. Not only do they strike the good balance of cgi and practical when it counts, but they fully embrace how bloody gruesome and ridiculous they wanted to get with its scenes. My favourites will always be the fat woman and the bathtub scene when the girl finds her family turned, only to end on the visual of the slugs shadows blocking up the car window into darkness. Visually impressive and highly underlooked in my opinion.
I never realised this wasn't a success. I saw it when it came out and me and my friends all thought it was great fun. I suppose in retrospect, I've barely heard it mentioned since.
Honestly, it’s kind hard to believe that this was were James Gunn’s career began. But then again, all the best start in Horror.
Sam Raimi started out with horror. Now he's famous for the Spider-man trilogy.
did you even watch the video? 🤣 James Gunn started his film career in 1996 lol
@@joshj1953 I meant in terms of his directing career, since this was the first movie that he directed. I know that he had previously written the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead and the live action Scooby-Doo movies and he been in the industry for a long time before slither.
Well, Peter Jackson started his career with Dead/Alive and Bad Taste, so…
Though you can still tell that this is the same guy who did GOTG. Even if the violence is way tone down, the GOTG still has some pretty grim stuff into within the realms of PG-13. Like the scene in vol 2 where they cut upon Abilisk and gore and guts fell out. But because it isn't red and the guts doesn't look that real, it get's away with PG-13. And the oddball sense of humor that sometimes puts you through uncomfortable terrortiy is also still there. I haven't seen The suicide squad yet but from the clips I've seen, it really seems like it's Gunn going back to his roots while still having the maturity he learned from working with GOTG.
I just remembered hearing about this movie
It really is a nasty film
I stumbled upon this on HBO once on a late-night viewing.
Needless to say, I wasn't able to sleep afterwards.
I totally forgot TITLE came out in YEAR. That was such a badass movie!
Ikr!! It was my favorite movie when I was little. I was a real YEAR kid, y'know?
Love this film, after Gunn is done with Guardians & The Suicide Squad, I’d love to see him return to Horror. Great job Ryan!
I would personally like to see a collaboration between him and Sam Raimi in that regard.
@@erubin100 I’ve always felt that James had very Sam Raimi type vibes to his movies. Despite him only directing one horror movie.
Brightburn was his last Horror movie he got involved (as writer/producer) and despite some gory moments, the film had a failure: it took itself to seriously.
@@charlespuruncajas9663 He wasn't really involved in Brightburn much tho, he was just one of the producers.
Finally. Someone is talking about slither.
This movie disturbed the shit out of me. And you know which scene I'm talking about.
@The One, The Only, The Official Mr. Troll Face Me too T_T
I don't
I remembered watching this movie.. vaguely, what was that scene again you were talking about?
@The One, The Only, The Official Mr. Troll Face yeah I kinda forgot whatever that part is, and don't worry I'm used to this kind of stuff, but not always haha
@The One, The Only, The Official Mr. Troll Face tell us, tell us, tell us🙇🏽♂️
I remember on the Slither website you could play a game where you stand in a field and shoot at the slugs while they surround you and it was the best way my brother and I wasted the summer of '06.
This movie is the epitome of “can’t look away” and “can’t unsee”
Grant is a husband who will do anything for his wife, Starla.
HOWYEVER....
He's also infected by an alien slug turned the town into gooey zombies.
The Gift (2000) seems to be forgotten by many, even though it was directed by Sam Raimi and stars Keanu Reeves and Cate Blanchett. It's haunting and my first touch with horror, so I have a soft spot for it, and would love for someone to look at it.
Sucks that almost everything Nathan Fillion is in fails when it's so good.
He's in so many cult classics, and I feel like he likes that.
At least we'll always have ODST
I just wish they had him as Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie instead of Tom Holland.

i LOVED this movie when i was younger, was the only horror movie i could watch without getting nightmares and i still love it.

Nobody ever mentions how perfect the soundtrack is for this film's comedy. But still a great video Ryan. Keep it up!
Michael Rooker and James Gunn go together like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton.
Ah Slither. I remember I made everyone in the room laugh during the grenade scene by going “well that stinks” right as it cut to his upset face.
Cloverfield: Title (Year)
new cloverfield movie confirmed?
Poor Ryan, having to take time out of his day to censor possum corpses so he doesn't get demonitized.
Forgoten, this and Dolls 1987 were childhood trauma for me
@The One, The Only, The Official Mr. Troll Face weirdly enough it wasn't that scene that really stuck with me, it was creepy no doubt but as a kid, i was crept by that chase scene that followed it with the little girl. at least i think there was a chase scene because i remember having nightmares where i would go to my mother who was replicating that doll transformation, she would tell me to run and i would whilst being chased by a doll on my heels. it's been a while since i watched it so i maybe just making shit up
“Attack of the Mind-Controlling Tapeworms from Space”
I wish I could think of something actually interesting to say.
Not bad for a debut. It reminds you a lot of The Blob & Shivers even has a cool homage to The Thing. I cant believe its the same guy who wrote Scooby-Doo but hey he definitely improved.
The remake of Dawn of the Dead was dope and cool, also featured the hand of another comic book filmmaker: Zack Snyder (who is coming back to his roots with Army of the Dead)
It's strange, "Super" looks more like a debut film, whereas "Slither" looks a lot more professional like as if it was made by a seasoned filmmaker. I get there's a budget difference, but even guys like John Carpenter can give a fancy cinematography and presentation despite small budgets.
I watched this once and I loved it, but seeing what happened to Brenda became my worst fear for myself., since I have PCOS and it makes me gain weight very easily and keeps me overweight. The thought of just becoming a blob with a head is so genuinely terrifying for me.
This reminds me that you didn't cover "The Dead don't die". I absolutely hated it, but I'd like to hear your take on it.
It’s weird, I don’t really like or watch horror movies (there are exceptions of course) but I can’t get enough of your videos Ryan!
Great job as always!
"My easy-going nature is being sorely f*ckin tested"
THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING. I haven't watched it in a long time, but remember loving how good the integration of cg and practical effects were.
I've been a fan of Slither since seeing it in the theater. It's a fantastic film. I also am a fan of Shaun of the Dead (but who isn't?), Black Sheep, Eight Legged Freaks, and Lake Placid. I also like Evolution which is unfairly maligned by pretty much everyone. There's a ton of really fun monster/creature features from the late 90's to the early 2010's which are woefully forgotten.
5:01 Oh, i love that movie _TITLE_ when it came out in _YEAR._
Honestly, this movie made me appreciate body horror and was my gateway to the subgenre, followed by Society.
Ryan, if you're reading this, please to a video on Society. Please.
I recommend "junji ito" if you're into body horror
@The One, The Only, The Official Mr. Troll Face We live in a world where rich people are aliens that rape and feed on poor people for sustenance?....Actually, that does make sense.
Society is so damn good!
i like how the alien isnt actually sentient and more just gives the host the urge to do these things wile also letting them keep their own personality and thoughts.
Well this looks bizarre just by looking at the thumbnail
Oh i've actually seen a video about it before, from "Roanoke Gaming", amazing channel btw, if you like the idea of watching an actual biology scientist try his best to explain how some movie and game monsters could potentially be real :P
Not an ad or anything, i just like that channel.

@@mr.raider7865 Glad you agree, your pfp also tells me one reason you like it, wich is the main reason why i started watching his videos. That and Dead Space obviously.

I was lucky enough to see this in theaters opening weekend. It's not my favorite creature feature, but I'm glad it has the cult following it deserves.

Your videos have rapidly become a highlight of my week, and highlights are hard to come by these days. Thank you, Ryan
5:03 ah yes, my favorite movie, title, which came out in (year)
its an classic
I like the acting in this movie.
But Jesus Christ, it's way too fucking creepy for me with the whole parasite/body horror aspect.
Body horror can be pretty tough to get into lmao its one of my favorite horror tropes and even i still need frequent breaks from it
@@StrangeLatte body horror is the only genre that is ready to completely fuck me up. One movie called Bug was the last body horror I experienced, I honestly wouldn’t mind if it stayed the last 😂
If you can get into anime, maybe watch the show called Parasyte, it’s less than 30 30 min episodes and can be found on almost every streaming site.
The world starts getting taken over by aliens, but on fails and instead of finding a full human body as a host, they trap it in his arm and only his arm turns into an alien hosting site, The rest of the journey is running into other people who have been taken over by the aliens. And it’s actually quite gripping.
@@aHumanBeing97 oh no, I'm totally fine with most types of body horror and I've seen Parasite (Anime/Games don't exactly have the same impact on me as movies do).

Slither is one of my favorite movies. I'm so glad Ryan covered it.
Back when Gunn was still close enough to his Troma years to be gross but had enough budget to really make what he was making work.

I LOVE Slither! Thanks so much for covering this gem. I bought this dvd as soon as it came out back in the day.
This movie freaked me out so much until it turned more into a monster/zombie movie. I don't know if it's because I have a severe phobia of parasites or if I have a severe phobia of parasites because of it.
The song at the end of the film, Old '97 - New Kid, is one of my favourite songs ever. I was so grossed out by this film but loved it. Squirming and hiding behind a cushion is my default for bits of this film but, it varies which bits on each viewing. Body horror classic. So happy to see it getting some attention.
I would LOVE an episode on Ghostwatch (1992). The mini moral-panic it caused, the blacklisting of its writer (Stephen Volk) by the BBC, the trauma it inflicted on a generation of British kids to see the IRL host of Blue Peter dragged into a closet by a crossdressing poltergeist. It's a movie with a story.
I watched this when I was like 13 or something and boy did I not know how to feel about it at the time, but something about it felt right. Glad you talked about it.
I watched this movie when I was like 8 or 9 on Syfy and it still haunts me.
Saw parts of it when I was younger cause my brother was watching it, I blame this movie for how squeamish I can be sometimes.
@@TheMrbrutalbutters same
My parents actually rented it from the video store the year it came out for a movie night back when I was little and i decided to watch it with them and it scarred me for the longest time Specifically that tentacle monster thing and the scene where the police open up the barn to find that one chick all swollen. I remembered those two things specifically.
glad to see this get some love, the writing is top notch
Saw Slither in theaters when it came out. Horror was just coming out of a rut at the time, and original IPs were bad bets for studios. Slither definitely exceeded my expectations. It was a blast to see on the big screen.
Time Lapse is an amazing 2014 indie sci fi thriller that i almost never hear talked about. It’s not necessarily a unique concept but the film was amazing in my opinion

I remember Slither being on MTV all the time when I was a kid. The bathtub scene was the reason I couldn’t watch the whole movie for years and the dvd cover didn’t let me forget it lmao
RE: Forgotten films.
Has Ryan done the Basketcase trilogy or Brain Damage yet?
'Slither' holds a special place in my heart.
It's a shame it's so overlooked by most people, it's such a perfect mixture of pretty much everything: edgy jokes, unholy body horror, great performances, amazing practical effects. A deliciously nasty movie!
The movie that put James Gunn on my radar.
I particularly like the film named at 5:01. Title(year) was such a masterpiece
Imagine being a kid and having nightmare of this movie. And your parents are watching the movie while you're having a nightmare, making it ten times worse.
that was me.
thank u ryan for keeping us well fed, i hardly have the time to miss you, in quarantine timeless disorientation its comforting to have your regularity to rely on
I remember not liking this movie very much when I was like 15 or so - I think I didn't really "get" it. I may need to give it a re-watch some time though. This was such an interesting video going through Gunn's cinematic history. Particularly your note about how this is where Kevin Smith COULD HAVE gone. That's kind of really true I think. Where, I like Kevin Smith a lot as a speaker, I don't really love him as a filmmaker. But with Gunn's projects like obviously Guardians, his silly early work on Scooby Doo and in the subverting-expection Super I definitely think he's a filmmaker I'd like to explore a bit more in
I saw Slither in theaters. I think I was in high school at the time. I absolutely loved it, and it is one of my favorite horror-comedies to this day.
Never realized how much james Gunn shit I watched back in the day.
3:34 I would agree totally with that but also Shaun of Dead is so well written. It's filled to the brim with call backs and foreshadowing throughout the entire film, the same as the other two entries in the trilogy. That and the crew involved already had a following thanks to Spaced. They weren't guaranteed success but they had a good chance from the outset.
Great video man. I think the gross nature of Slithers story and alien would turn a more mainstream audience off of it. Which is sad, the whole point is for a gross but satisfying fight against the aliens.
I still remember seeing the scene as like, a 10 year old kid when the characters found that giant woman inside the shed up to the part when she starting splitting apart and I remember being traumatized. For a while after I didn't even know if it was a bad dream or not but I'm glad I've found it again
Dose everybody remeber when this was in our recommendeds for no reason
This movie was the first movie as a child that i watched with my uncle who secretly watched almost every known horror movie with me and i was traumatized for a good portion of my teenage years but i really came to love it
ah man, I remember seeing Title(year) such a wonderful horror movie. one of my favorites!
This is one of my dads favorite films so whenever we're feeling a little sad and distant with each other we like to sit down and watch it together
Slither is one of my favorite movies simply because it takes place in South Carolina (where im from). The town of Wheely looks like a town you'd find in Camden and that's what's terrified me so much. These houses look like mine, the people look like my neighbors...
Gonna be real, on the topic of films that are under appreciated. Tragedy Girls is a wonderful, humorous, and effective breakdown of the slasher genre that gets zero credit and most people haven't even seen it.
I saw the bathtub scene as a kid and freaked out, never knew what I saw or what it was from. So glad you did a video on this because it's now one of my favorites.
This is one of the most underrated horror/sci-fi movies I've ever seen. The humor was over the top, nobody took themselves seriously, and it had just enough cheese to make for a great time. The barn scene had me in tears. I laughed so hard until I cried!
I still haven't watched this whole film because the practical effects screwed with me as a kid. This video may have given me the strength to finally finish what I started all those years ago! Thanks Ryan!
Slither is one of my favorites! I've seen it so many times! It stands the test of time.
