@@carolthomas8528 Sunak had long enough to make an impact and sat on his hands. All the Tories needed to do to retain power, was control migration. The country could have still been failing on every other metric but Tory voters would have come out in droves to keep someone in power who controlled out borders... But no. Multiple elections, the Brexit referendum, universal criticism of the Rwanda plan and Sunak still couldn't do anything to respect the wishes of his voters. He had the opportunity to learn from the failings of Cameron, May, Johnson and Truss and he learnt nothing.

The best way to neutralise the reform party is to do a good job. Deal with education and housing, encourage companies to move to the north east and create jobs. They cannot and should not out Farage the Reform party

Labour don't need to do a good job. Reform can never get the numbers, that is pretty obvious. The Tories that voted Tory are pretty much lib dems and they would never vote reform, no matter how bad things get. Reform has no other avenue to get extra voters from. Those that voted labour will never switch, so we are stuck with labour for good, or atleast 15-20 years.
By that time, there will be so much apathy there will be very few people who bother to vote. The national debt will be so large that interest on it will consume most of our budget, everything will be collapsing, but the mass immigration will give Labour access to new voters. The country will look completely different in 20 years from now, white people will be in the minority and Islam will be by far the dominate force in teh country and possibly in control of Labour. English law may even be replaced with Shariah law. The vast majority of British people respect Islam over Christianity,

The small boat crisis is going to get extreme under this Parliament. Labour policy and announcements have made the UK a huge draw for illegal migrants. This is one aspect the future government will be vulnerable to attack from both Reform and the Tories.
Also as you say, things have to improve drastically in order to confirm the belief the country is where it is due to Tory mismanagement. If things don't, the Tories will regain some credibility.
I think it all depends on how the Tories manage Reform though. If there is some kind of merger Labour will be in trouble in 2029. If the Tories and Reform keep squabling then Labour will win like they did tonight, with the conservative vote split and them slipping through.

This is the problem - they don't bother with bread and butter issues and prefer trendy stuff like net zero - and only started discussing immigration at the last minute to shore up support, love him or loathe him Farage nails his colours to the mast and then other parties follow - it should be the other way around.

You’ve done better than us in this respect. Having said that, Reform (as well as our far-right parties) are a real worry, right now. It seems to me we cannot afford to dismiis the very real underlying worries that have boosted this vote (in percentages, it’s not to be sniffed at!). The fears behind it are related to all the basic securities that the Tories have undermined, though. So if Starmer can ensure ‘normal’ people can feed their families again, and afford a home to live in, perhaps my perception of Britain will slowly shift towards where it was in the late nineties again.

I think this whole election regardless of outcome is so depressing. Voter turnout is so low. Labour only maginally increasing its share of the vote albeit on a reduced turnout. The collapse of Tory and SNP vote and general apathy lead to a Labour win. It's definately not 1997 repeated..Labour really need to give us a vision...as I still dont know what it is...

I think the back-tracking on the previously much more ambitious manifesto really alienated a lot of people who were going to vote Labour - plus, there wasn’t really anywhere for the radical left to go (unlike the radical right who just vote Farage.)
I voted for Labour not for what they are now, but what they could be in a year or two - and to also get the bloody Tories out!

“If the problem were austerity they’d have been kicked out in 2015”. Hard disagree for so many reasons. Austerity drove Brexit. Austerity drove our poor response to covid. Austerity has affected infrastructure and is why I treat patients in corridors and my pay is down a third. It’s why I can’t get a train, a GP appointment, why my student debt is £100,000 and climbing (aka a life long millennial tax), it’s a big driver of social mobility palsies. Austerity is the original sin, the ethics of BJ, Truss and Sunak are the tip of the spear. For the first time since 2005, Labour have finally gotten around to giving people a national ticket that is palatable. Brown, Ed, Lord help us Corbyn twice, now Starmer. Austerity, Rory, is vital here.

This was certainly a deserved loss for the Tories; however, can we just take a few moments to sit back and recognise how well British elections work. Six weeks or so from announcement to outcome. An outgoing PM who congratulates the incoming one. Candidates who almost inevitably shake hands after the event. By mid afternoon we will have a new PM and the business of government will continue. The system is far from perfect; however, I think it is pretty good. Contrast this with the US whose election campaign has been raging for what feels like an eternity.

I’ve long felt that Starmer and Labor have to demonstrate operational expertise. The trains have to run on time, water has to be clean, and the NHS needs everything (and these big 3 are just to start). BUT, politics is still going to be equally important. Labor has to weigh voter reform and think about cross party alliances. There’s common ground with LD on some issues. May be smart to expand the center and drive the Tories further right. There has to be a plan to neuter Reform, and one way is to get the youth vote solidly on side. Labor needs programs targeted to the young (youth centers, work training, etc). Lots to do.

In the 10 years that I’ve lived in this country - and seen effectively the worst of the Tories - I must admit it’s been shocking to see public services fall into disrepair, cities looking shabbier and shabbier and an all-round disdain and pessimism from people.
So I do really agree that the new government, at the very least, needs to start getting the basics right
