  • Sir Robert Buckland, the Conservative's former Justice Secretary, has lost his seat, in Labour's first gain from the Tories in the General Election.
    Sir Robert, who previously held Swindon South with a majority of over 6,000, lost to Labour's Heidi Alexander.
    Labour won 21,676 votes, with the Conservatives second on 12,070. Reform UK were third on 6,194. This marks the first Labour gain from the Tories this evening.
    Sir Robert has held the seat since 2010, before which it was a Labour constituency for several years.
    He hit out at his Conservative colleagues in the wake of his loss, saying: "I've watched colleagues in the Conservative Party strike poses, write inflammatory op-eds, and say stupid things they know they have no evidence for, instead of concentrating on doing the job".
    Ian Hislop provides his analysis of the 'decimation' of the Tory Party as the results come in.

      @@amcdonald7479 First past the post has been the way of things for many decades now. It's funny that each outgoing party only complain about the voting system when they've been kicked out of office. The Lib Dems had their chance to change things when they were part of the coalition government, as did the Tories in 2015, 2017 and 2019. None of them bothered, instead they set about the boundaries of the various constituencies in their attempt to favour themselves.
      Nobody gained 'crazy number of seats' with a fraction of the vote. In each constituency, the people voted for their reprsentitive in Parliament. The MP that got the most votes won the seat. That's the system. If we moved to PR we would end up with a parliament similar to that in Strasbourg where no one party has overall control, so no real progress can ever be made.

      Nothing to do with Brexit. We had to endure a further Tory term, from 2019, precisely because voters believed the Conservatives were the only party that would deliver it.
      Labour under idiotic Jeremy Corbyn were, to put it mildly, less than unequivocal that they'd respect the outcome of a democratic vote. Shades of Trump and 6 January.
      So we've effectively now had 2 votes on Brexit - in both 2016 and 2019 - and still you people bleat.
      You remind me of the SNP who still haven't got the message that the people of Scotland don't want independence. They lost a referendum. They then said if they won a majority of Scottish Parliament seats they'd take it as an instruction to seek a 2nd referendum. They didn't win a majority of seats. They then said if they won the majority of Scottish UK Parliament seats they'd take it as an instruction to seek a 2nd referendum. They in fact lost 38 seats and now only have 9 out of 70-odd.
      This morning they were *still* talking about independence, and not talking about a single thing that matters to the people of Scotland.

    It would be useful to understand the breakdown of the type of people who voted reform. The media is assuming that all the people who voted reform would have voted conservatives if reform weren’t running. But it might not be that straightforward, it could be that a significant proportion of of reform voters would have voted labour if reform wasn’t an option and they only picked reform because they either found reform’s policies more exciting (albeit devoid of reality) or thought labour was going to win anyway, or they were worried of a “labour supermajority”. Hope somebody looks into this, because this will effect the next election.

      I'm amused at your talking of 'nuance' but banging on about possibly one of the most un-nuanced aspects of the election - that if the right (or left) wing has its vote split, it's less likely to win a general election.
      Commentators don't mention this because it comes under 'stating the bleeding obvious'!

    • @martynsmith820
      @martynsmith820 20 днів тому +1

      @clairenoon4070 the nuance is that starmer didn't win so much as the conservatives lost. As I said, labour didn't turn the vote to them, people didn't actually really buy into what either labour or lib dems offered (as seen by the tiny vote increases for those parties). It was simply that 4 million people voted for farage. That would the nuance missed by you 🤷‍♂️

    • @clairenoon4070
      @clairenoon4070 20 днів тому +1

      @@martynsmith820 Nope, still no nuance there!
      It's as if you've not yet grasped (or perhaps only just grasped) that Labour and the Conservatives go back and forth being in power, and that there are (all other things being equal, and there not being a 'one-off' issue at play, such as 2019 and people wanting Brexit to be done) 'relatively' few seats that cause power to change hands.
      This is as true for the Conservatives as it is for Labour.
      Parties will obviously direct their greatest effort into these seats.
      There's absolutely no revelation here!
