Everyone merely sat there feeling blessed,,.no autographs wanted...just nice to be in a small pub under the same roof.

This video was a lovely memorial to a very gentle man.
I will say, this magnificent pile would long be torn down had it not been for GH. He bought at the height of hatred of Victorian architecture.....in England and America.
I would to be caretaker of the great house.

He was rescuing a work of art by a very eccentric man, Sir Frankie Crisp. It had fallen into disrepair and was likely to be torn down and redeveloped, so he stepped in and bought and restored it.

I think it was the grounds (being a gardening nut) and just the ambience and look of the place that got him in. It might have been Tom Petty who said he eventually got around to living in one corner of the joint, not spread all over the premises. If it was open to the public it would be a big hit. If I ever came back to England for a holiday who would go there, you can shove Buckingham Castle.

I just watched "Living in the material world" such a fascinating insight into his life and the great music he made but this house really blew my mind apparently it has 125 rooms it must be one of the biggest private residence in Europe ,I wonder did he have many people staying there and did he have it fully restored, I'd say the heating and electricity bills are on Cloud 9👇🤣

he had many "friends" stay over...as I remember lots of Actors (George had a film producing company) lots of comedians(George loved to laugh) and lots of motorsport guy(George loved formula 1)...he was private but not so much to his inner crowd he was very much a cool great guy..helped out people aswell. He had impressive properties in Mauii and Australia and Switzerland too.

George's first wife Patty saw the Estate was up for sale in a local property magazine. She knew George would love it, and so told him about it. He viewed it and pretty much bought it straight away. But he was very lucky. The Estate was derelict and the bulldozers were booked to come and demolish it all. George bought it just in time. He paid £100.0000 for it in either 1969, or 70, depending on which books you read. Now it's worth in excess of 20 million. Not a bad acquisition for a 26 yr old as he was in 1969. He installed a 124 track recording studio and made pretty much all his album's there. I have several George Harrison albums and on the cassette tape cases it says FPSHOT. Friar Park Studios Henley On Thames. I have had my photo taken at the gates of Friar Park several times over the years. One time I went there and visited the local library, litterally just a short walk from Friar Park. The librarian asked me what I was looking for, I said any books about Friar Park ( this was long before the Internet) she said I have something better than that, I was a house keeper at Friar Park, would you like to see some photographs? Obviously I said yes, and she showed me some photos of George and family, and herself in Friar Park.

Wow, the irony is crushing. George grew to hate the endless hype and the feeling of living in a bubble with the world looking on. He was happiest when in the garden of Friar Park, and yearned to be just a guitarist in an obscure band of close friends. The Travelling Wilburys was the closest he could get to that dream, formed from people he knew well and respected.

    • @wanderer1955

@@wanderer1955 Well I did say it was the closest he could get to his dream. He really detested the demands of publicity because his life had been public knowledge pretty much since he left his teenage years. But yeah you have a point. Part of George probably still needed affirmation, and he was close friends with so many guys just as talented as he was, including the genius, Bob Dylan.

It was most likely a self contained world for him. The Beatles were without a doubt the most famous people on earth and back then did not have security like celebs do now. He probably loved it because it was away from the world and the madness that surrounded them. He was also mad about the grounds and loved Gardening.
