  • Pretty close to the airport is this iconic Kauai noodle shop. Saimin is the Hawaiian version of asian noodles. It's popular with locals and some tourists too. This 'restaurant' has outlived most of it's neighbors, and there has to be something to that. It carries the personality of the Garden Isle, not fancy, but very satisfying. This little video is a tribute to this place that brings back what Kauai was way back when. Sit on the short wooden stools and eat on the formica countertops with old plastic cups and you would believe you stepped into the 1950's.
Thank you Lono, for the use of your song version of "Aloha Ka Manini." All of his music is available at lonomusic.co

Even though I'm pretty full from the saimin, the pie is so 'lite' that you can enjoy a slice also.

Good yeah? I still think the noodles and dashi are good. The regular sizes uses lunch meat and some kamabuko and eggs. If you want more da kine toppings, got to get the "special."

I remember going to Hamura’s during the 70’s through the 80’s and it was good then I moved to Oahu back in 1991 and discovered Shiro’s and Shige’s which in my honest opinion are much better with larger menu and selections, up until my recent vacation to Kauai from Washington this past Christmas and new year weeks I asked about Hamura’s, I was told by my p and other childhood days that it’s not the same as it was 40-50 years ago when the original owner was still alive and did the cooking.

Thanks for your opinion, I too, have heard the same. And I appreciate the other Saimin places too. But maybe it's the nostalgia or just being there that still makes the food taste good. (Also I don't have many opportunities to have saimin.) The saimin stand looks nearly the same and the food comes fast and the servers are friendly.
