Can the plastic cover on the new shock be left off if it's broken, or do you have to get a new one. If so, where does one acquire it?

I’m surprised u guys haven’t done this process or replace any other oem parts, for 2008-2015 Scion xB. Just the involve for 2003-2006 scion xB.
