Another study tip: When you are planning your study session, list your tasks with an ”end time” instead of a beginning time.
For exemple, instead of saying: “I have to start this math homework at 8 Am”, replace it by “I have to be done with it by 10 AM”.
That way, you are creating a mini deadline which prevents you from procrastinating or not paying as much attention. I think it’s really useful

being intentional about rest and breaks is also important! last school year i became extremely productive to the point where i was working all day and most of the night. i would only sleep 2 or 3 hours a night. i was proud of myself for getting so much done, but after about a month i got really burnt out and fell even more behind than before. now i choose to sleep and take breaks even if i have a ton of work to do. it's more sustainable in the long run and way better for my mental and physical health

So true! I've really struggled with feeling overwhelmed and often beat myself up for procrastinating when I felt the need to get up, move around, or space out.
Now I've come to realize those moments aren't useless. I can be productive in something else during them or just take a breath and it doesn't mean I'm a lazy person

Exactly. I don't understand this focus on "motivation." You go to school and your do your best because hopefully it will lead to a job. Then you go to that job because you have to pay for somewhere to live, you have to eat, and you have to pay all the rest of the bills that go along with life. "Feeling motivated" is irrelevant. Like most thing in life, you have to do it whether you "feel" like it or not. Nobody "feels" like dragging out of a warm comfortable bed to deal with rush hour and bad weather and everything else.

@@Yesica1993 You should need that to motivate you. Your basic needs should be met. You shouldn't have to fear poverty if you don't over do well in school. That's horrible we should be fighting for better conditions.

What really fixed my problems with motivation was a quote I heard somewhere - "Where motivation ends, determination begins". If I wake up completely unmotivated, what gets me productive is Determination. I say "I *will* do x today" then break this down into the smallest task I need to begin x - "I will clear enough space on my desk" and do it, then move onto the next smallest task "I will sit down and open my books". I continue this micro-breakdown of tasks until I actually "begin" x, at which point I'm over that "activation energy" block and feel good enough to actually do it.
One point not covered here which is important - if you have a chronic illness, mental health difficulty or other issue which affects your day to day life, it's important to accept the small wins. There was a period for me where basic self-care was high-effort and my studies were almost impossible on top of that. Like she said about successes breeding motivation, accept that sometimes being up, dressed and opening the curtains is a success, as is each stage to get there. Use those successes to fuel breakfast. Use that success to fuel one priority task for the day... etc until you hit your limit for the day (and respect that limit, so tomorrow will be good as well!) Not being able to do everything is fine, and not a sign of failure. Do what you can, and that is enough to count the day a win.

This video really got me thinking, because I have adhd and my motivation fluctuates largely and tips like yours can be sometimes harmful to neurodivergent people like me. Just to change my mindset and language around the fact that I can't get myself to study for the past 4 hours won't work. Using rewards can be harmful of course but oftentimes it's the only thing that will help me with staying consistent. I love what I study with my whole heart and still procrastinate. I enjoy studying and still struggle with motivation, just because my brain works differently. I followed you channel a few years ago when I was still at school and felt like a failure, because I couldn't study 12 hours a day like in your videos or "just stay organized" with a planner. I thoroughly enjoy you content now, but I want to remind people who are neurodivergent and watch a lot of studytube: Please don't compare yourself, don't take this advice as gospel, try it out and see what works for you. Don't feel defeited if one of your coping tools with you executive disfunction is talked badly about in these videos. Sadly most of them are just not for neurodivergent people.

I also have ADHD and Autism and I’ve found that Ruby’s tips can be very helpful if ofc you’re neurotypical. This is completely fine and I think as neurodivergent folks we need to check in with ourselves and realize that not all advice is good advice. “Changing mindset” is a short term solution. Having rewards helps us and we shouldn’t be ashamed of that. Some of us need to stim, work while standing up, get a body double partner, take our medication, involve a teacher to keep us accountable, create fake deadlines, studying in short bursts, etc.
There’s nothing wrong with us if consistency is hard. We are every bit as hardworking as someone who is consistent because we are always trying to stay creative on how to keep up. We just happen to have a brain that hates to work sometimes

Hey Ruby! I know I'm just one of thousands of viewers, but I really, really have to thank you "personally" for all the content that you create. I'm not overexaggerating when I say that you have changed my life. You have helped me love studying, love learning, and pursue the degree I want instead of the one I thought I SHOULD pursue. Every video of yours that I watch helps me become myself a little bit more and work towards my dreams and goals, in a way nothing else ever has. Whenever I'm down, I feel unmotivated or sad or upset with myself, I'll watch a study with me or a daily routine or a vlog and it makes such a difference in how I feel and perceive myself and the world around me.
I've been watching you for many years now, and you've really had such a big impact on every aspect of my life. And I cannot thank you enough for it. I don't know if you will ever see this comment, but no matter if you do or don't: thank you for everything. All the love and best wishes from just one of your regular viewers.

Affirmations always seemed a little childish to me (I’m lazy by nature and I have no problem admitting this to myself or anyone else lol) but one thing I’ve found useful is saying “I want to do X” instead of “I have to do X”. It injects a little bit of extra agency into my to-do list. But let’s be honest, most of us aren’t in a position to only do things we enjoy and are “motivated” to do. Or spend 270 € a year on Adobe products.

This is very controversial but I’d say don’t do more than needed. Even if you would want to do more, leave it when you still feel excited. Complete your tasks and then let yourself rest even though it would not be ”productive”. Firstly, as Ruby said, success keeps you motivated. If you set a crazy 10-hour study plan and fail, your motivation declines. Very common for someone who is not used to work that long. On the other hand, a lot of academic stuff needs creativity which flourishes when you get enough mental rest. The quality of your work increases when you’re not overworked. Studying is draining for the brain. And you’ll probably have more energy to do something else than scroll away, which is so common for me when my brain is just so tired… Read a book, go for a walk (and pls avoid making it another challenge). Or just sit without doing anything and think for a while - it is quite amazing and before phones people did it a lot.

    • @jaslavie

it's important to understand your personality- some people prefer structured routines and one fell swoop can lead to the entire day being ruined. However, others prefer spontaneous work. Sure they have a routine, but they can schedule a 16 hours study plan and if it fails, they might not think that much of it other than they made progress. But yes, I definitely agree that it's necessary to focus on a few tasks and get really good at them. It's a cultural fallacy to believe it's more meritable to take 10 AP classes, 11 extracurriculars, while still maintaining your mental health.

I guess weather you have to put a visible "advertisement"-marker on your video depends on which country you are in. The comment section of your Videos seems like there are lots of quite young people watching your Videos. Therefore I would like to ask you to please make it very plainly visible, when you are doing an advertisement, as opposed to when you are simply giving a recommendation. Thanks!

You can't live your life based on feelings of motivation/energy. Most things in life you do because you HAVE to, not because you feel some magical/energetic feeling of desire to do them. For example, even if you love your child with all your heart, you don't always have an overwhelming feeling of love for them. No exhausted parent "feels" like staying up another night with a screaming newborn. No parent "feels" like cleaning up after a child who's been throwing up all day. But they do it anyway. Your commitment is what gets you through, not warm fuzzy feelings. No one "feels" like getting out of bed when they have a headache or haven't slept well or they're stressed out from family problems. But when you have a job, you get up anyway. Your need to pay your bills and buy food overrides any feelings you have. People need to learn this lesson. If you're going to always wait until you feel or can somehow work up an energetic, happy feeling about doing something, you'll never get anything done.

Completely disagree. I personally never ever do something I don't like/don't feel like doing. Yet, I'm not miserable (eating junk food, not cleaning etc) because i have a natural tendency to like "healthy" and productive things. For instance, I dropped out of regular highschool because I hated the way it's structured, I felt like I'm not learning anything and wasting time. Instead, i took "external exams" of every subject in highschool and graduated. Another example. I always had problems waking up early. My parents told me that I'd never find a job. Now i work remotely and can wake up any time between morning and the noon. I love studying and working but I hate being forced to do something i find stupid. The point is that there are two kinds of motivations: extrinsic and intrinsic. I think extrinsic motivation is among people who naturally like "easy pleasure" and must overcome this by forcing themselves to do certain things. Me (and Ruby probably also) have rather intrinsic motivation and we truly enjoy this different kind of pleasure. We like the process (for example of studying), rather than the result.

I actually found out I don't enjoy school because I was insecure. Now that I've overcome most of my insecurities, mainly body disphoria, I'm way more motivated to go to school and actually put effort in it. It's still not my favorite place, but this helped so much. So I recommend getting your life together and resolving your personal issues, idk. Videos like these also motivate me and also the thought that eventually, my bad grades will fuck up my future so... Well they're not that bad but still could be better. So this year I wanna actually get better, not just in school but also improve my life. I already have a set morning routine, and it feels great to have it actually. I also started working out. It's not easy to get started, but after I feel so much more accomplished and better about myself. I still struggle with my body image a little bit, but i mainly workout for my health and for good mood. Anyway that's it Jesus i need to stop writing

I don’t think romanticizing is a good approach. I could never beat myself up in order to enjoy something I don’t.
I worked on retail while I studied because it was the only job that was flexible enough and ironically paid the fairest.
I hated every fucking minute, and our boss always kept saying that we should just learn to enjoy our job. 🤮
So I studied even harder, which I didn’t enjoyed either. In my little free time I concentrated on things what kept me happy and content.
NEVER think that if you don’t enjoy something you have to force yourself to like it, NEVER let anyone telling you that you should enjoy or accept this or that. Just be true to yourself 🌈🦄

Unrelated, but would you consider making a video on candle burning technique? 😂 I always admire your candles but I can never get an even burn on mine 😂

      I ain't Ruby, but I have finished y11 with 9 9s, an 8, and a 6 mashallah. So here's some tips:
      1. Try stay out of school drama: honestly it's just pointless, takes a lot of energy, and by the time college starts, people forget or don't care anymore about what happened.
      2. Spaced repetition: what I did, when we finished a topic, say radioactivity in physics, on Saturday or Sunday I'd spend 2 to 3 hours making all my flashcards for that topic. Spend the next day memorising them for around an hour, then used spaced repetition and every session was around 15 minutes.
      3. Don't get stressed about not having notes on all your subjects and topics. There's not really any need to have notes on every single topic, depending on their size and how easy u remember it. For me, space was an easy topic to just remember, as was most of maths, so I didn't make notes.
      4. Practice, get things wrong, apply ur correction to ur next attempt. Every week or 2, I used to write an English essay for an inspector calls, using mrsalles ideas, give it to my teacher to mark, see where I went wrong. My first few got 17/30, and in gcse I got 27/30.
      5. Have one break day in ur schedule. For me, I never did any revision on Fridays because we went to our grandparents house, and Fridays I felt tired anyway. I just used a few minutes to think about what I'd do on Saturday, and then relax for the evening.
      6. Revise for those end of topic tests and ur mocks. The mocks give u a great insight into how exams work in the hall, and to see if ur revision methods worked. If they didn't, try a different method. For me, flashcards and physicsmathstutor questions were the best.
Hope this helped, inshallah you both (and anyone else reading this) do very well on your exams :D

I am not a native speaker but I can catch up with your english usually. However in this video it seemed to me that spoke much faster. Therefore I would like to ask you to speak a little bit slower next time if it is possible. Personally I find your videos more beneficial and calming for mind when speaking slower.

Ruby, I absolutely love studying but recently I was really sick and missed one of my final exams. I recently got to know that out of my total which is 100 I got 48. I was very demotivated. Do you have any tips I could cope up with to just get over it?

    • @lily0987

what i do is when i come out of/ go into an exam i always remember that i only know what i know. i can’t go back and cram two more processes or words or theories, i only have the information that is stuck in there in the present. i cannot change that. whatever i write i write. my score is finite

    • @sprinkledwithwords2835

I'm sure this was really demotivating! As a teacher, I have to ask / wonder if the exam was "necessary" for anything, or was it a stepping stone to your next place? Eg if it could potentially affect future job prospects (I teach English so my students must pass for most future jobs & higher education), but if they get the grade they need (eg they received a 6/B even if they wanted an 8/A), then I will still applaud how fantastic they were but encourage them to move on. Ultimately, it was something that happened and you can still be proud of 48/100 considering you didn't even sit the exam! Obviously if you need to resit, then you'll need some motivation, but remember it wasn't your fault that you missed your exam, you were sick. Take a deep breath, and look forward ☺️

      @samairasdiaries8690 2 роки тому

@@sprinkledwithwords2835 It was my exam for the 2nd term and since we had 40 mark exams I managed to get marks in other aspects such as class preparation/interaction which added up to 48 but missed the 40 mark one. Although I wasn't allowed to give a re-test I gave the paper just to test my knowledge on the topic and scored quite well. So after talking to my parents and peers I realised that although my actual mark according to school was 48, if I added what I scored in the "knowledge" test in my mind, I would score well. So now I don't really worry a lot about it since it's not something I can change but focus on my next math exam where I know I will have to score well in order to make up for the previous one!
But thank you! I really appreciate you reaching out and helping me😇

Great video! Although I was very disturbed by the fact that you sound ten years younger when speaking in voice-over compared to when you speak directly on video haha!
Edit: I don't know how I feel about people being encouraged to "romanticise" their lives. It seems that it something that is possible only for the privileged few - students and people who don't have to work. Most people have work that is not romantic or aesthetic in any way. But at the end of the day, I suppose that this content is targeted at students - maybe I have grown out of this channel a bit. Any thoughts?

Happy birthday! I hope you have the best day! And my biggest tip is to focus on understanding material, not learning it. This might mean not doing as well on some tests because you haven’t memorised everything you need to know by heart - but that can come later. That’s the easy bit ;) and also just do lots of practise questions! Good luck x
