    I really liked my 08 Malibu 2.4. Good power and pretty reliable. Never had chain issues. My in laws own it and it’s at 200k with zero major repairs.
    Thinking of buying it back for my son. Mostly freeway miles, but good engines in my opinion. People just don’t keep up with oil changes. I’d always perform the change at 30%.

    Never install the standard GM RH secondary (black) chain guide as they often break at the top fixing hole. Use a modified stronger one which are available in the US, together with stronger 10.9 bolts (or ARP bolts) which can be purchased as a kit. Make sure the oil filter is primed before start-up after an oil change.

      I’m doing the work myself so I’ll have about $400 into it, ours is a 2014 with just under 100k miles so definitely worth it for me.

    Sounds very good.$500 rebuild was a bargain. OEM or similar parts would have been more than the car was worth, I suppose.

      Yeah absolutely, the parts I put into it were a good bargain and good for what the car was worth.

      We only got 35k miles on our HPFP. No codes but the oil level was rising and smelled of fuel. Replaced the metal feeder pipe too. Engine runs much quieter and smoother too.

    I have seen some people run catch cans for cleaner running; there are some youtube videos but some are clearly wrong. There was a PCV hole mod for some of these engines in service notes.

    • @factoryratgarage
      @factoryratgarage  Рік тому +1

      I’ve seen two mods with these one with moving the hard plastic line that can cause clogging and the drilling of the small breather hole in the intake for the pcv. I did the hole drilling and glad I did cause mine was plugged.

    • @dosgos
      @dosgos Рік тому +1

      The GM service note I think refers to the hole drilling you did.

    You should never activate the tensioner until its torqued to spec , you press on the guide and it activates , as your chain stretches overtime it extends

    Does putting new rings in stop the oil burning issue with these engines?

      I have one cylinder with no compression. But otherwise still runs .
      So I'm thinking it's a bad compression ring.

    Best trick is to make a small chain wrench using the old chain.
    It could be welded to a small bolt, nut, washer, etc. and would lock against the block casting protrusion.
    Never load a gear tooth unless it is a CAT engine or something.
    How anyone can afford a Terrain is beyond me.
    Quiet buggy though.

    • @factoryratgarage
      @factoryratgarage  Рік тому

      I don’t necessarily think so as we change our oil in our vehicles usually at 3k miles, it appears to me it just got wore out, loss tension then jumped time and broke things.
