ah yes, the story of how Satan saved Christmas by shooting God in the face, that's my favorite.
Man, 3 years later and people are still replying to this now and then. Some of you way too seriously. It's a joke. And a damn good one if I do say so myself.

'Twas the night before Christmas, and there was once a young man who was accused of doing something he didn't do because of the powerful influence of a wicked man. By making friends, the boy had brought down Satan to help him and Satan then proceeded to shoot God in the face because God wanted to control all of humanity...and that was how Satan saved humanity from enslavement...and Christmas...

Ryuji is not Prideful, he is quick to anger, prone to react violently and prefer physical solution to the most problem so he represents of Wrath, his Ultimate Persona Senten Taisei before meeting with Sansan also reflect Ryuji before his meeting with Joker, prone to act violently and easy to be tripped.
Ann is Lust, no doubt. Her start out Persona is Carmen, the role model of Female Fatale who used her beauty to archive whatever she one. Ann reflects that by abusing her good look to have easy time in the world of Role model, manipulate other people who after her body like Kamoshida, Yuusuke, the former Royal on Shido's boat. She is also demanding companionship in form of lover and friend more than anyone in the Phantom,
Makoto is the epitome of Envy. She envies at Akechi for being able to get close to her sister without little efforts, she envies him of his talent in deduction and analysis. She envy of everyone else in school because they do not have to live up to expectation like she was. When she has torn off her mask of envy and show them who she is, Makoto is a violent storm of oppressive anger reflecting on her reckless and brutal fighting style.
Futaba is Sloth. Her character arc and her shadow explain it pretty well.
Yusuke is Glutton. His thirst for art and food literally knew no bout. 80% of the screen time, Yusuke is found eating food, his small talk in Mementos are mostly about food or art and how he want more.
Morganna is Greed. His love of Treasure, his need for identity, for his place in time, for recognition etc even when he has enough. At the final, when he has fulfill his duty and need to be gone together with Metaverse and Velvet Room, he still clings to this work wanting to fulfill his desire.
Joker is Pride. His Persona is the Ultimate symbol of Pride, Freedom, and self-interest. He is often spotting definitely not a humble smile whenever he has the advantage. And as the leader of a rebellion, he has subconsciously placed himself above and beyond the system to act however he want.

this makes a ton of sense, but as I said before I dont think the thieves represent the 7 sins, but the palaces do.... however this do make a lot of sense, maybe the palaces are the sins to be conquered by their representatives (thieves)? I dunno, all I know is that the palaces are the sins themselves (even the trophies you get from beating them has the sins names on it)

Joker's role as Satanael could also be a lot more literal, given the end of the game - Satan recruiting angels to rebel against God pretty much directly mirrors Joker restoring the Phantom Thieves's rebellious spirit to oppose Yaldabaoth.

@Ken just a reminder that in the SMT universe/s, these god figures tend to be some magical reflection of our own psyche. Like 'American Gods', we create and manipulate them and they create and manipulate us (though we and they do it with different levels of awareness and freedom).

I would like to clarify something about Yaldabaoth. Yaldabaoth is the Demiurge, or "False God." Persona 5 illustrates this quite nicely by showing that his promises for order and peace (pure law, as you put it,) were nothing more than a cover for his true goal-- total control. Yaldabaoth desires nothing more than to be acknowledged as the True God, even though deep down he knows that he is not. This desire turns into desperation, leading to his will to be seen as the True God through any means necessary. You can research Gnosticism and the Demiurge if you would like to know more on his origins.

    • @UnfamiliarIntimacy

      Absolute Zero
I don't understand though. If he wanted total control then why did he say that he was hoping the Phantom Thieves efforts to 'spur mankind to change their own hearts'? If he truly desired ultimate control then why is it that he gave humans a choice to worship him or not? He even masqueraded as Igor to watch you undo was he was intending to happen. YHVH didn't lock humans up in the prison. They locked themselves up because they were too lazy to fight back so they succumbed to their own desires. YHVH was merely granting them their wishes. So I'm not sure I understand. He's called the God of Control in the game but it seemed he only had any control over anyone at all because they subconsciously fell under his order.

Castiel The Archangel That’s the point. He figured he couldn’t be opposed if he incepted the desire to uphold a god into the hearts of the masses. He was also probably doing it to prove he could too. After all, he was just a big shadow wandering around between dimensions with nothing to do. He created a purpose of his own that aligned with his nature. Too bad his nature is that of humanities evil. I also argue that the final boss wasn’t a battle between god and the devil, but instead; a battle between two devils. Both joker and the shadow want to take the fate of the world into their own hands and they are willing to incept thoughts into the minds of the masses to do so. That battle wasn’t a battle between good and bad. It was a battle of ideals. I think that’s what made it good.

Reading through comments and nobody mentions Loki, the bastard son of Odin, just wanting to please his dad and be recognised as his son or something rather.
Likewise with Akechi and Shido, among other Loki references.

    • @ISayEssays
      @ISayEssays 6 років тому +104

rattyinc Actually Loki being Odin's son really only comes out of the works if Christian priests who were writing about Norse religion hundreds of years after it had faded from common practice. So more than a few Christian themes, and allegories are slipped in as a result. Like the whole fallen son narrative (lucifer, Cain, ect..). In the older sources Loki is a sworn brother to Odin, thats why he can cause so much mischief due to his bro status with the Allfather. Another interesting fact is Jotun the word commonly translated to Giant in english would be more accurately translated to something like Destroyer. So its more of philosophic difference from other forms of norse divinity rather than an entirely different kind of being than the Aesir or the Vanir.

Igor, his servants, Nameless, Belladona, Demon painter, and Marie are the only attendants as of now. Just because Igor made him doesn't mean that he has anything to do with the velvet room. In Gnostic belief, Satanael served The Demiruge (Yaldabaoth), before realizing he was not the true God and granting humanity knowledge, giving them the chance to fight back against the false God Yaldabaoth. Another thing is that Yaldabaoth and Satan/satanael are switched around quite a lot, with some stories saying that Yaldabaoth created the world, or that Satan did.
Funny, how Joker (Satan) followed Yaldabaoth before figuring out the truth and siding against him. Coincidence?

I disagree on the sins of the characters mostly and would rather attune them to the circles of hell in Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy.
Ann is the circle of Lust and it's due to her sexuality of her clothes that evoke passion. The twirling of her whip could be a light hint of the tornadoes that the sinners would be thrown into in that circle but that's just a guess.
Ryujis is the circle of wrath, where sinners are thrown into a swamp and marsh and fight one another pointless. It cant be violence because he's never tried to kill or destroy a persons life of his own accord. Instead he gets mad for not being able to fight back for so long and uses the thieves as a means to show that side.
Morgana's is Greed, and this alludes to his love for treasure and always wanting to obtain things for himself. His stresses of not wasting days and constantly wanting you to take advantage of the different things you can do reflects the wasters and spenders that fight each other with boulders that amount to no value and just meaningless use (essentially saying his constant nagging and trying to fight it throughout the game is pointless of the player to try to change)
Yusuke is Gluttony. His need to eat and seek food despite no money mixed with his cold personality is reflected by the sinners of the circle who wade in the mud and dirt with icy sleet constantly falling and cerberus eating them. His fox style seems to elude of a dog like nature.
Makoto is Heresy. She denies authority and believes in her own justice, but as she does this privately she is "burned" and constantly messed with by others around her like her sister and akechi. Much like the sinners burning constantly in their tombs for denying god, Makoto denies the authority she has seen in it's disgusting form.
Futuba is Limbo. She constantly is in place figuratively and literally for her lifestyle. Her mother's death was not her fault and she feels guilty still for it. Of course she also hacks but her hacking is a grey area on how she thinks it helps the team and it does.
Haru's is fraudulence. Her father and his company have deceived many not just of the public but of the employees as well. The motto is betrayal but really based on beauty thief ploy before awakening her persona and her working with liars, cheaters, manipulators in her father's company she clearly carries that fraud name sake that she tries to change in the end with her own shop and still honoring her father the best she can.
Akechis is violence. His killing and desire to do what he can to achieve his ends all end in death and violence. He did the mental shutdown cases and killed those people, including wakaba. He tried to kill joker and tried to frame it as a suicide. He wanted to kill shido and enact vengeance but he was willing to kill everyone in his way to make sure he would come out on top. It ends with his own cognition shooting and killing him. He lives and dies by the violence he brought. Much like the rivers of boiling blood, hot deserts and suicidal trees each mirrored his violent upbringing behind a deception.
Joker is treason. He is the sole player in jalderboughs game and the ultimate trickster that defies order. Akechi might have been a traitor, but joker is the true traitor that defies all society and order in order to change the entire structure of society for the better. He lied to alot of people initially, but over time they learn that he did it with good intentions and unlike akechi lead to a better person through that interaction. He goes against everyone and being struck with a criminal record as a teenager is practically being struck from heaven by God as Satan. It's why sataneal is his true persona: the ultimate Chaos that betrays all for it's own justice.
    That's just my view tho.

The final circle is inhabited by traitors and tricksters with the biggest traitor (Satan) at the very bottom. Oh gosh, how I love this game. ❤

For me Satanael's final move is more than just a reminder of the bullet, but also of the power of the people and the justification of government: One of the most common themes of the game is how the masses either love you or hate you and that's how your influence is measured in the entire story. The reason why the Holy Grail gains so much power is because the people give such power freely.
That's what represented in Mementos with the collective cognition: This is how society reacts and which one they deem good enough to guide them, to lead them.
Satanael's final move is given by the people's support against their 'best reasoning', meaning going above law and pushing chaos into balance, the one who makes the final choice in the final battle isn't the protagonist but the people supporting them.
Satanael's bullet is tyrannicide, the allowed form of rebellion when the ones who governs them all misbehaves: "rex eris si recte facies, si non facias, non eris" which is "You are King if you behave rightly/accordingly; if you don't, you're not King"
The ones asking for Yaldabaoth execution is the wishes of the people and Joker kills him because he wants to return the free will to society.

Yael Rivera I totally agree. The one double standard I feel is that gaining society's support and approval directly opposes the idea of rebelling against society.

    • @yaelrivera6465
      @yaelrivera6465 6 років тому +9

Oh yeah, of course. At the heart of it any power (either to rebel or to conquer) needs society's support -or at least tolerance- to be able to act for them. Otherwise they'll be shunned before starting their work, be the Phantom Thieves, Shido, Akechi or even Yaldabaoth.
But of course support from the masses is fickle, so it's a double edge sword that can both save you and kill you.
I liked how the game represented that.

@Yael Rivera That explains why Satanael's ultimate attack can only be used during the final battle, it was likely obtained from all of mankind's hope put into a bullet, all Satanael needed was a rifle to shoot it so it's not like he can fire it all the time (think the spirit bomb from dragon ball z)

I don't think the Thieves are the 7 deadly sins, I think the Palace targets are the 7 deadly sins. Everyone of the phantom thieves display behavious that falls into all of the deadly sins (which means they're human) but even the trophies you get from the palaces name a deadly sin, which pretty much marks down the bosses as the sins themselves.

I think the point they were trying to make is the seven deadly sins do not exist as only good or evil, and that they take both sides. It's shown through the palace rulers and the Phantom Thieves, as well as Yaldabaoth wielding them against you in the final battle and Satanael using them to kill Yaldabaoth. The sins, representative of human desire, are not inherently a force for good or evil. They become good or evil through a person's intent.

I really like what you said but I think that ryuji's personas shows more his own "rehabilitation" than what you said.
His original persona is Captain Kidd represented as an undead captain, still riding his boat, I think that this design is related to ryuji's injury and how he had to quit the track team, leaving him wounded.
In the other hand, Seiten Taisei's design is much more energetic reflecting ryuji's confidant as he is trying to get back into running.
As you said, Personas are quite complex and we still don't understand fully the meaning behind them.

I thought the initial personas were based on thieves ( Johanna being more of a con artist in a way) while there ultimate are the tricksters. But when you pointed out the ultimate personas also fell from grace that made a lot of sense. An interesting fact is that the Lovers arcana, which Ann is the confidant of, also represents crossroads which Hecate is the goddess of. This was an amazing video by the way!

  • @ward_point8988
    @ward_point8988 7 років тому +41

Hecate, the Triple Goddess of the Crossroads, has also been tied to the Fates. It's often speculated that Hecate 'evolved' into the Fates While the Fates appear as Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho in-game, the commonality between the Fates and Hecate is that they govern the 'Crossroads', which represents the stages of a female's life: virgin, mother, and crone.
Ann's growth through Persona 5 is not literally in those stages, but you do see her growing as a person. While the overall theme of wanting to become a model is often viewed as somewhat childish or shallow, that's besides the point. The encounter with Mika gives her a wake up call. Ann realises that she can't breeze through her professional life without sacrifice and hard work.
The rest of her Social Link drives it home. We all lose friends as we grow up, some by choice and some to circumstance. While I'm a Best Girl Makoto fan, Ann's SLink holds the greatest amount of meaning to me.

Actually even more symbolic for Satanael the megamitensei wiki said this :
"In some Gnostic traditions, Satanael is said to be an angel that once served the Demiurge. He rebelled when he realized that the Demiurge was not the true God and granted humanity the knowledge to liberate themselves from the Demiurge."
Now let's add up that Yaldabaoth is one of the Demiurge's names, let us imagine that the true god is Igor and there you go :
-Joker follow Demiurge's instruction (who is under the apparence of Igor) since the beginning of the game effectivly being is "servant" through the entire game.
-Later however he realized that Yaldabaoth was not the true god (or the true Igor in this case), and so he rebels against him.
-Through his action he reveals Yaldabaoth treachery, to the humanity making them realise that Yaldabaoth is a false god that don't want good on them.
-And finally humanity liberate themselves from Yaldabaoth by cheering the Phantom Thieves and giving their power to them, power that Joker use to destroy Yaldabaoth and liberate humanity.

For Prometheus, while he wasn't sent to the Underworld he was exiled from Heaven but more importantly, he was symbolically exiled from the Greek frame of reference in the far east - as far as Caucasus. Essentially, he was banished beyond Greek existence. This ties in with Futaba as while she suffered great loss and lived with great suffering, she still brought her "fire and light" to the Phantom Thieves. That is, her technological prowess and knowledge of cognitive PSIence. She defied the banishment her family and her mother's enemies wished upon her. The vulture taking the liver per se is her mother being gone. Every day she will miss her but the memories she has not only with her but with the Phantom Thieves quickly replace any feelings of loss or sadness.

I noticed some deeper symbolism in the personas of Persona 5, in Royal there's this theme amongst the 3 tiers of personas each party member has, an example is Joker's first persona which is a gentleman thief, then his second Persona is Sataneal a Demon lord, and then his final persona Raoul is the same gentleman thief he started out with, just cooler, the symbolism here is that their egos become bigger but in the end they become humble, Humility seems to be an ongoing theme which started in Persona 5 the animation, where Ren beat Akechi with just Arsene, the battle wasn't about the bonds, but rather the ego itself, Akechi let his ego control him, while Ren had control of his ego.

@@dragonmaster613 I think Humility suits better in the themes and story of the game as the views of society are what shape the actions of the phantom thieves, they reach the point where they're very serious about just appealing to the views of society, this represents the mystical tricksters, as they're just following the wishes of society, eventually they realise that they shouldn't follow the wishes of society all the time and went back to their roots of being heroes not for the wishes of society, but to do what's right. and well with how god figures are shown to represent the wishes of the masses in Persona, this really works well.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't say it is a perfect localization, in fact nothing is. It is just a matter of how the game's localization accurately portrayed the atmosphere, emotions, feels of the original Japanese version. Persona 5 does it great, while Treehouse of course, never put much effort into them.

I think the idea of SMT’s conflict between Order and Chaos is intriguing in Persona 5 because the true ending of the game requires the player to choose the path between the two: balance.
Consider the crossroads posed near the end of the game. If Joker refuses Yaldabaoth’s offer and loses in the final fight against him, then Order will triumph over Chaos and humanity’s desire for security will be fulfilled at the expense of their freedom. However, if Joker takes up Yaldabaoth’s offer and creates a world where the Phantom Thieves are able to exist indefinitely, then Chaos will (sort of) triumph over Order and, as Arsene says at 14:42, Joker will be able to “run wild to his heart’s content” for as long as he wishes. While this WILL allow the Phantom Thieves to continue affecting humanity, it still ultimately results in the strong exerting control over the weak - in a way, the Phantom Thieves do not free mankind, but instead become their new wardens.
In the true ending, the Phantom Thieves choose to fight back against the deity of Order and prevail, preventing humanity from being enslaved but at the same time also eliminating the Metaverse, a.k.a. the one place where they’re able to use their Personas and allow Chaos to have power. Thus, by eliminating the Demiurge AND the Metaverse, they prevent either Order OR Chaos from taking control and instead allow humanity to decide their own fate.

You know after finding out everything about satanael Jokers ultimate persona the connection he has with shido felt all the bigger. Shido had a messiah complex and saw himself as a chosen of god and ended up being yaldabaoths Tool to rule the World. Than there is Akira (Joker) who might just be the first to oppose him in what may be years, with all the Power he held at the time. He was branded by this and the people around him stopped seeing him as a human and more like a demon...
Ultimately the Tyrann of law fell victim to a demon of freedom.
    A demon he himself created.

Also with the hercules 12 labors theroy, originally there was only supposed to be 10 ( like the 10 main bosses). It ended up being 12 because of technicalities and the king trying to screw over Hercules so the 2 side bosses can be seen like the 2 extra labors, originally not necessary but through circumstances you end up doing more than what was originally required

Tasks she requires Joker's help with but does ultimately complete. And only after these tasks are completely done she awaken to Prometheus.

Well its been years but I still keep getting this question. So here is my interpretation on why I associated each Phantom Thief to their respective deadly sin. Please remember that this is my interpretation and you are free to make your own.
-Ryuji is pride because he loves being a Phantom Thief, to the point that he cannot keep quiet about it.
-Ann is gluttony because she loves indulging in sweets, even though she knows it is not good for her career as a model. She is NOT lust because while she is an object of lust, she herself never does it. That is kind of victim blaming if you think about it.
-Morgana is envy because he grew jealous of Oracle's superior support abilities and disliked how the Phantom Thieves seemed to be straying away from his mission to become a human
-Yusuke is greed because he spends too much money on art supplies, often neglecting his other needs, like food.
-Makoto is wrath because of her repressed anger.
-Futaba is sloth because of she closed herself to the world, confining herself to her room.
-Haru is lust because she is the only romantic interest that had feelings for you prior to you confessing to them. She actually looks disappointed if you do not reciprocate her feelings. If you become romantically linked with her, she reveals that the only reason she is still with the Phantom Thieves is because of you.
-Joker is vanity because he is Joker.
Once again, this is my interpretation. You are free to make your own or even disregard this idea. This idea helped me understand and appreciate this game even more but if that does not work for you then feel free to enjoy it how you would like to instead.

Something I think is interesting in comparison to Persona 4's Final Personas is that all of the phantom thieves' final evolutions are all completely different in silhouette, while the Persona 4 final forms are mostly palette swaps (accept for maybe Kamui). I don't know exactly what this could symbolize, but it's an interesting comparison

After passing the game, and readed the collection of Arsene Lupin stories(with exception of the one with totally not Sherlock Holmes), i found interesting connections between Joker and Arsene Lupin, besides having him as Persona.
The third palace's treasure, Joker's relationship with both Goro and Sae, Joker's and Shido's relationship and Joker's possibly canon personality.
The third palace's treasure, after a lot of work and effort, into setting up a moment with his allies, so that he can walk through the front door, to begin to gain knowledge(Makoto setting herself at risk, and Joker having the idea of using her to enter Kaneshiro's palace), trying to get the combination of safe, through really careful as subtle methods(deciphering Kaneshiro's combination to the treasure), they end up with fakes money, Lupin ends up with fake property titles(You may argue that the brief case was the pay, but Lupin also gain a salary from his infiltration work).
Goro and Sae's relationship with Joker, now why did i mention 2 of then as one topic, because they perfectly represent the inspector who arrest Lupin, Ganimard and how this relationship, builds to making a modern retelling of Arsene Lupin stories: "The Arrest of Arsène Lupin", "Arsène Lupin in Prison" and "The Escape of Arsène Lupin". Goro represent the part that, not only catches Lupin, but the part that respects his intelligences, tastes, etc. As a rival on their game of Cop's and thieves, but also the one that constantly underestimates Lupin.
Sae, represent the part that, unconsciously helps Lupin escape prison(in this case she does it of her free will), the friend, the one that enjoys his presences on a equal grounds.
Finally we have Joker's side, he honestly tries to befriend Goro, in a terms of equals, while with Sae, for the most part of their relationship, he jokes around and gives her the info that she wants, through a condescending actitud.
Now, why this stories of Arsene Lupin are the key to their relationship, they are the stages of the game, The Arrest, the seven palaces. In prison, the whole retelling the story of the game. The escape, the whole plan and how he without moving outside of the police eye, he gets away of then, with the help of both Sae and Goro.
Shido and Joker's relationship, this one, it's a hard one, because it's a combination of Lupin stories, Shido's stealing Joker's freedom in the beginning could be compare to Lupin fail first big hit mention in the third palaces treasure, where the guy from which Lupin came to steal from, end ups telling him exactly how much he fail, and how was it that he fail(Shido telling him what he was going to do and forcing the woman to support him, and using the police to steal Joker's freedom). The next part, can be taken as the story "The Queen's Necklace" where Lupin comes back to where he made his first steal and slowly begins to brag about it in the face of the people he steal it from, while the husband constanly tries to prove him wrong, while he relates who he stold from him and his wife. Here while not completely similar Joker comes back face to face, with who stold his freedom from him, brags about how he is going to steal from him, everything he desires, and does it. And Shido can't do anything to stop it, no matter how desperate he gets to prove him wrong, he giantly fails. And Joker walks away from it.
Joker's possibly canon personality, through the game, as the game moves on, you notice a change in the talk options, they come from someone who is careful and standing on a rope, to someone that dances about the subject, not out of fear, but out of full confidences, who it's on control. Not only that, but all the relationship with the woman, while you can date then, for someone of the kind of response that Joker has, it would be something short, for fun, if it ever happens, the most likely option, it was him helping then out, and when the time came, he let then down, easily. Something that Arsene Lupin does through the stories, he helps woman's in need, but never get emotionally involve, more then mention the interests of "MAYBE i will try something with her, but not really".
Not only that, but with all of his confidant(outside of the Phantom Thieves), he always has the next options at the end of then, when they discover who he is, faint ignorance while clearly knowing he has been discover or, just plainly admiting this. Something that in a few stories, Lupin does fully trusting his abilities to read people, and how whoever discovers his identity, even if they try to report him, it will never be on time to catch him.

Now that I think about it, Akechi's Loki makes quite a bit of sense. Both of them basically caused trouble because of pettiness. Akechi is causing the mental shutdowns as part of his plan to get back at his father, Shido. As he plans on helping Shido become Prime Minister and then, once he does so, reveal to the public that he's Shido's bastard son. He's fueled solely by his own selfish desires instead of using that to help people.
Similarly, it's believed that Loki killed Baldr (and caused Ragnarok) because he was jealous of Baldr and how everyone loved him more, though Loki was still well-liked. Both of them are driven by petty, selfish desire.

Really good video there is one more thing i would like to add. Specifically about futaba. Her final persona is the manifestation of Prometheus the man who stole fire and gave it to mankind and had his liver constantly eaten by the bird sent to torture him. I think, however, there is way more symbolism in that than you went into detail on. Speaking from experience depression, especially extreme depression like futabas (cripling depression), feels as though your breaking from the inside powerless to stop it. The crow eating her liver is her depression eating away at her life. Her prision is her room and whats more do you remember the final boss of her palace? its her mom, with wings... Her mom is her version of the bird eating away at her life, and its not the real her its the image of her and the thoughts futaba has about it.
Finally one thing i have left that i kinda dont want to mention but will anyway is that often times when somone says something about "you shouldn't have been born" like we here futaba's mom tell her constantly in her palace. A common way to rephrase that is "you are the load your mom should have swallowed". For every other game publisher i wouldn't even mention this but atlus has a great and accurate way they view online activities and saying: such as the comments on the phansite and several t-shirts such as futaba's JLMK! (not joker luvs my kunt) but "just let me know" so I think this could be at least a nod to the background of prometheus.
ok the actual last thing now, Its not actually seen but the gang after beating the palace says "futaba herself was her treasure" which i think is wonderful and shows miles about her character. it wasn't her mom, her memories, sojiro, the player, gaming, computers, hacking, doing good, her favourite food, or anything like that. The source of her desires to get better and what caused her deep seeded cripling depression was a limitation she put on herself. Self sacrifice is her nature, as if she hadn't sacrificed herself she could have easily gotten both her and sojiro killed if she went to look for shido's henchmen. But she eventually stands up and breaks out of her own prision (or tomb) just like prometheus. I think the devs really nailed this symbolism in particular.
Tl:dr futaba has way more depth than most people give her and i tried my best to show that above.

    • @-penta-1357
      @-penta-1357 6 років тому +2

Great point. That's why I still think her arcana should be Hanged Man, not Hermit. The Hanged Man is all about self-sacrifice and having awareness of what habits end up hindering yourself, which is what her social link ends up being all about. The Hermit, on the other hand, is more about attaining knowledge for yourself through extended periods of isolation, and although she kind of does that, it doesn't really do a good job of summing her up, as she doesn't really do it for herself, per se. It's kinda sad that they put all this effort into making meaningful connections between the characters and mythological figures through their Personas, and yet make so stereotypical interpretations of the arcana just so it sums up the characters superficially enough for it to seem right.

-Penta- I think Mona should be hermit, since he is searchingbdor a home and finds it in the phantom theives. However I find it ironic that the character who never leaves home is the hermit.

    • @-penta-1357
      @-penta-1357 6 років тому +1

True enough, but I think Sojiro is a best fit for the Hermit. He pretty much distanced himself from everyone, albeit emotionally, due to the shock of Wakaba's sudden death, and losing his former job left him with nearly nothing to do but to wonder about what made her end up like that. As he said several times, taking Futaba in was a way for him to redeem himself, and to maybe attain knowledge about why the hell things turned out that way. He may not be a hermit physically, but he certainly fits the description of the card, at least from how I take his character.
In fact, I think a way better fit for the Hierophant would be Iwai. The way he's so protective of his son, and his fixation (or rather, shame) on his past and reluctance to tell him about it screams Hierophant to me. Plus, the way he behaves is pretty much identical to Shinjiro from P3, which is more evidence for me to think of him as such.
About Mona though, I really feel that they've thrown away a lot of potential in relation to him. In fact, I think he's way more of a Fool than Joker was. Even though all characters are going through journeys of their own, Mona's journey remembers me way more of the Fool's journey in a sense, as he is less about coming to terms with his inner demons, and more about discovering his true place in the world as you've pointed out, but less on a "Hermit's way", like finding his own place to call home, but more on a "Fool's way", of figuring out what his true purpose is. They could've made a great character arc for him based more on this premise, and less on those nearly pointless talks he had with the protag before going to sleep, and him becoming "The World" by the end of the game would justify that whole thing about him becoming the "guiding light" for the Phantom Thieves. Sometimes I think he was the Magician just because the protagonist needs to always be the Fool, because of the whole wild card thing (which isn't even restricted to the Fool arcana in the first place, but oh welp).
As for Joker, they should probably have gone down the easy route and made him the Justice anyways, as Akechi is clearly the Devil, for obvious reasons.

I love learning about different mythologies. I read a translation of "Journey to the West" years ago, but the translator/author admitted to leaving parts out to abbreviate the story, so Son-Goku/Sun-Wu-Kong's trip to the underworld was new to me.
Being half-Greek , I find it amusing that everyone seems to know about the mythology, but pretty much everyone in the English-speaking world mispronounces pretty much every name, & will sometimes fudge the facts.

Prometheus' story has a bit more than just stole fire->got chained up and eaten by a bird. After the stealing, Zeus offered a chance to solve things, by having Prometheus make an offering for him in return for his forgiveness. However Prometheus had other plans, he made 2 meals to be sacrificied, one that was full of nice roast, but covered in skin to make it look unappealing, and bare bones covered in fat. He made Zeus pick one, and of course he picked the bare bones under the fat. After he found out he has been tricked, he got furious, and THEN he ordered for Prometheus to be chained up. Also as a sidenote, along with this, he gave "Pandora's box" to Pandora after taking back the fire, knowing that human curiousity will make her open it,thus punishing them with all the evils of the world.
Maybe it could paralel that after Futaba's palace, the next is Okumura's, where things go bad.
