Join former WWE Head Writer Vince Russo and Dr. Chris Featherstone for yet another edition of Writing with Russo as they make predictions for the King of the Ring tournament. Russo and Featherstone agree on one thing. The tournament really means nothing at all. They are desperate for WWE to create new stars so that Cody Rhodes has opponents to work against. Who do you think should win King of the Ring 2024? Let us know in the comments below.

They refer to Jay as Main Event Jey Uso yet he loses every time he’s in the main event.
Mid-card j Uso
@standardprotocolformat6090 for now maybe hopefully levesque has something planned for jey.
Except at war games and when he pins roman reigns in a tag match
@@amandagrothmann308 We Hope so Man.
He's good And Yeet is getting him over. But they are killing Yeet as a catch phrase faster than it's catching on. After they do that I feel bad for Jey.
WWE marks are going to watch anything WWE puts out no matter what. They’ll never stop watching King of the Ring. And the marks won’t demand anything to freshen up the product because they don’t watch any other promotion besides WWE. They’re not real wrestling fans, they’re WWE fans.
No. They’re wrestling fans. You don’t gatekeep or decide who’s a fan because you watch random indie feds. MOST of these promotions are horrible, and I say that as someone who watches whatever is available that doesn’t screw with my schedule.
@@Here2Learn714 They’re not wrestling fans. And WWE is indie wrestling with a Netflix deal. The product is mediocre and the talent benefits from being on the largest platform in the business despite not having the skills to be stars in the business. TNA alone has better wrestlers and better matches than WWE with half the budget and none of the wrestling media caping for them no matter what.
As far as KOTR winners, it only helped Randy Savage, Owen Hart, Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Lesnar, and Booker T.
They are the only names to win the KOTR and it benefiting them.
Lesnar and Booker T were the only two to get a world title shot and win after winning the KOTR.
And as far as the King gimmick, it only worked with Savage and Booker T, they were the only two to make the gimmick work.
Every other person that has won the KOTR was either pointless, got over because of something else, or didn’t get over and failed.
Let’s look at the rest KOTR winners
1985 - Don Muraco (didn’t get over)
1986 - Harley Race (was already a made name but was near the end of his career)
1988 - Ted DiBiase (the KOTR didn’t get him over because his actual gimmick is what got him over)
1989 - Tito Santana (didn’t get over)
1991 and 1993 - Bret Hart (Bret got over not because of the KOTR but because of his feuds and stories with top names)
1995 - Mable (didn’t get over)
1997 - Triple H (what benefited him was being best friends with Shawn Michaels and sleeping with the bosses daughter)
1998 - Ken Shamrock (now he could’ve done something but Austin was the main face at the time, and Taker and Mankind over shadowed him to the point no one remembers he even won it)
1999 - Billy Gunn (😂 Talk about a guy that could never get over as a singles guy, he’s a tag team guy)
2001 - Edge (what got him over was the Lita affair and his feud with Matt Hardy)
2008 - William Regal (just too late for him, he was really good at the time but just too late for him, if Regal was doing this in 2004/2005 ish time then maybe he could’ve done something, just too little too late for him)
2010 - Sheamus (was already a WWE Champion by that point so what was the point?)
2015 - Wade Barrett (was already over during his Nexus stuff but WWE didn’t want to do anything with him, then a few years later he won KOTR when no one cared about him anymore)
2019 - Baron Corbin (WWE have tried multiple times, he can never get over, no one gives a shit about him because he fucking sucks)
2021 - Xavier Woods (WWE just wanted to give him a participation award)
Crazy thing about Brett Hart winning in 93’ KOTR was that he originally was supposed to go on to beat Hogan to regain the WWF Championship at Summerslam. Hogan made the decision to drop the belt to Yokozuna that very KOTR PPV and nixing that plan.
Jay Uso is the perfect forever mid-carder.
He's just a tag team guy playa
@@sergioflores7172 Goin' one on one wit da Undatakah!
It’s just me Uce…Day one!
Everyone that was ever in the bloodline is overrated
@@kdizzle901 Even The Rock?
The Rock never won KOTR. I don't know why this guy thinks he did.
King Booker also was booked as World Heavyweight Champion after winning KOTR.
Yep pointless heels just win them. Last good one was King Booker. Anything after that was lame.
King Regal woulda been good if he hadn’t gotten in trouble.
@markfroman738 true but even that years KOTR was on a random Raw and so quick
@@sergioflores7172 I know
They gotta make it mean something like they get a title shot of there choosing or whatever. Someone walking round with a crown and a robe is so lame in 2024 and it does nothing except giving them a new lame gimmick
King of the Ring USED TO mean something when it actually made stars like Stone Cold and Brock Lesnar, but now we have guys like Baron Corbin and Xavier Woods winning it and then moving even further down the card.
If a baron was over and then he was a massive heal
@@paulcarpenter7844 He feuded with Roman over dog food for a while. Yeah, he was the last guy to pin Roman for over three years, but other than that it did nothing for his career.
Triple H needs to go. He has no interest in building any stars bigger than the brand and more importantly, bigger than himself. In his mind, HHH was as big as Austin and Rock....hilarious. But this way of thinking has helped put the ratings in the toilet over the last 2 decades.
Remember "Wrestling isn't wrestling" documentary?
The 2002 KOR gave the winner a title shot at SummerSlam. They should just bring that back instead of just giving someone some royalty gimmick.
King Bookah!!
King Gunther
You guys forgot william regal! He definitely gotta push even heard he was supposed to win the heavyweight title.
If they have a plan its fine. King Bookah shows that it can be done, but they need to make it more formal with specific bonuses to the "title" of king.
The King of the Ring /queen of the ring winner should get a world title shot at any place at any time
That's what Money in the Bank is for.
@James-if3kc remember king of the ring people used to earn title shots it should push people though giving a title shot or something like getting a PLE match against a legend
@@declangaming24 I agree.
Half right
Hell yeah I love these psychology discussions and look forward to every upload 🤘 & King of the ring and queen of the ring are so predictable it's almost not watchable there's no hanging on the edge of your seat feeling bro. we need. Russo back such a realist. 💯🤘
The lies you tell Russo the realist??????? Majority of the storylines back in the day was dog shit thanks to him lmfao
Booker T was the last person to get over with that gimmick in 2006! 2006! You can’t rehash this
Move on & do something fresh for once
Id say Corbin but I know alot of ppl don't like him
@@user-lj3cq2fk5vnice guy but he’s boring, ship sailed on that a while ago
@@user-lj3cq2fk5vand he was already eliminated so
@@snellsman I disagree,no reason besides creative that he can't be a top guy again
Did y'all forget about King Booker or what? He played the role as king and won the Title. that was the most significant one of the past 20+ years.
Corbin was over Shamus was over barret was almost over Owen Hart Kurt Angle just a few
@@paulcarpenter7844 Corbin sucked
The first draft was fun to watch back in the day.
Not enough bros, bro
Sports based wrestling with bracket style tournaments
It has such B league sports vibes though because only midcarders compete in it.
Sounds like AEW.
Gunther winning doesn't make sense cause he is already over, however it will do great for a Jade Cargill with her being a rookie, and will help push jer feud with Bianca Belair later on. And Carmelo Hayes winning the men's side will be great for him moving forward.
I like the kotr but agree it needs to be made relevant again, even the belts beside the IC and the two mens championships mean anything so its like alot of things that don't mean anything now
Mabel got one @ Summer Slam vs Diesel in '95
He got a shot and so did Owen in 94. But neither was a direct "Reward" for winning KOTR. They just happened to be the challengers
King Mabel is underrated.
Damn russo giving this featherweight Hayes the king of the ring. Never thought he would pick a guy like that
Gunther
I've been following these wrestling talk shows for awhile, since "business has picked up" over the last year and a half or so with CM Punk and all the collective dramas.
But this have really cooled off now. Like I have no interest in king of the ring or hearing these two discuss it. So much better hearing about AEW drama or rumored cm punk wwe returns or what the rock's doing on tv.
R they really serious only the brock lesnar one meant something? Did they forget about the king of the ring tournament that gave a certain wrestler the start of a run that defined the attitude era Stone cold winning the tournament and gave us the iconic line well austin 3:16 says i just whooped ur ass.
Roman Reigns story is absolute power corrupts absolutely. When he returns Solo will refuse to hand over power. Beat down by Tonga ensues, Jey comes to the ring to help a fallen Roman.
He meant from Day 1 Ish
A shot at the WWE title of their choosing should be rewarded to the winner of the King of the Ring and a shot at the Women's title of their choosing should be rewarded to the winner of the Queen of the Ring.
Russo liking Carmelo Hayes - I'm surprised. Vince always keeping it interesting
Only cuz he's talking to a bl@ck guy here, lol.
And the main event is pointless it’s gonna end in a DQ where they both keep there belts
Dr. Chris is spot on the KOTR means absolutely nothing. It leads to absolutely nothing. It's just another Tournament.
You forgot Steve Austin and Owen hart lol. Russo and this clown don’t know shit about wrestling
Its only worked for every 5th KOTR cause only a certain talent knows how to Rock the Gimmick
Jey Uso is not going to get over to the point of being a main event guy. The fact that they even call him “Main Event” is like a joke in itself as it’s an awful nickname.
If you really want to strap a rocket to some one that can get over, Carmelo Hayes and Bron Breakker are the guys to do that with.
Gunther makes the most sense to win this though
But what does this mean?, do they get a world title shot?, if not then what’s the point of all of this.
bro
I enjoy the King of the Ring..I think they could make it great again
Wasn't Vince just criticizing Carmelo, but now he wants him to win KOTR? Is it because of who his guest is here? Lol.
King of hearts: Owen Hart
I only really care for one wrestler: Shayna Baezsler. There is great talent on these shows, but most of the roster is not special or stands out.
Royal Rumble is the best thing ever because everyone's in it. KOTR is the lamest thing ever because nobody's in it.
LOL! No participants in any of the matches?
Vince Russo should be begging for change at a run down Quickie Mart rather than pretending he's still relevant in the wrestling world.
Booker T got tons of mileage out of his reign as King of the Ring. Got Sharmel involved. Had a world tittle reign along with it. Every now & then to this day he will still put on that horribly hilarious fake british accent & resume being King Bookah! IMO nobody has done more with King of the ring than Booker T.
LA Knight & Jey are more over than Cody and aren’t getting any push
If this was any other company people would be screaming at the Booker but Triple H can do no wrong
The marks love him just because he's not Vince. And remember, these are the exact same marks who hated him when he was a wrestler.
@@James-if3kc literally the only thing that drives their love triple h is their Hate for Vince. At some point they’ll wake up
@snellsman once once they wake up then the ratings will fall . Wwe is sinking
@@snellsman Exactly! It's just like the marks who love AEW just because they hate WWE so much. None of it is about what's actually GOOD. It's only about what they HATE!
@@annec2923 Exactly, Anne.
Russo with another bad take and his minions latch it up. King of the Ring elevated Steve Austin and Owen harts careers
KOTR used to mean something, though. It did wonder for Bret, Austin and HHH. But I don't think putting it on the Street Profit guy would be good. Way too soon. The guy is too green. You have to have someone that need it to take the next step. Like it happened with Austin. A guy like LA Knight would be perfect for it. Jay Uso is fine but he's too clownish to be a King.
Bret didn't need it at that point, honestly, but I think they wanted to have a big star win the first actual KOTR PPV. The ones who benefitted the most from winning KOTR were Owen, Austin, HHH, Angle, Edge, and Lesnar.
@@James-if3kc True
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Thanks.
@@James-if3kc So yea I think like the guys you mentioned KOTR should be for the guys who need the next step, not the complete unknown. That's why Knight would be the logical choice to me. He's just at the cusp of challenging for the secondary titles but Paul and Zayn are not ready to lose titles yet. So that would a be nice "in-between" event.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Exactly!
I think King of the Ring would work better if it was strictly an NXT PLE. Maybe it would earn someone a spot on Raw or Smackdown.
Then it should be called King of the Vanilla Midgets.
@@James-if3kc and Queen of the Quad Tears
@@navy4181 LOL!!!
Winner of king of the ring gets to main event the next ppv against the former wwe champion.
Winner gets a title shot
So you get someone who got a kotr title a chance to get over to the main event card with a fan accepted concept Of facing the former champ.
Vince Russo criticizing other wrestling companies is hysterical since he was awful in wcw

First
Too many Bros I'm watching Cornet
Biden supporter! Trump 2024
😂. It’s hilarious how Vince Russo thinks he knows better than anyone at this point. HHH has WWE firing on all cilinders on top of the industry. I trust him to make KOTR relevant again. Not the dude who’s claim to fame were bikini matches and driving the final nail in the wcw coffin.
His claim to fame is the Attitude Era. But you've got a narrative to push
@@kevinlee9929he wasn’t the only one behind the Attitude Era: McMahon, Dunn, Cornette and Russo worked as a team and it continued to get better when Russo left, so it is questionable if he had any affect whatsoever, because whatever idea anyone had would have to be filtered through those four men. Keep in mind Russo’s ideas in WCW was Arquette as champion, the New Blood storyline, makes me think people give Russo more credit than he deserves.
@@andrewft31 Then by your logic OP shouldn't be trying to place blame on Russo for bikini matches. Cause he wasn't the only 1 responsible for them. And you shouldn't be trying to place blame on Russo for Arquette becoming WCW Champion. Cause that wasn't his idea. It was Tony Schiavone's idea. But I notice whenever an idea is perceived as "Bad". People like yourself have no problems placing sole blame on Russo. But when it's good we have to mention that it was a team effort .....
Russo's claim to fame is the entire Attitude Era, including The Rock as the corporate champion, Austin vs. McMahon, The Three Faces Of Foley, Undertaker and Kane, The Brood, Chyna, and countless other legends from that time. Triple H's claim to fame is marrying the boss's daughter and pushing vanilla midgets.
