    The WWE Universe in France was hyped at a different level and even Triple H praised the energy of the crowd in the post-show media scrum. In this special edition of The Wrestling Outlaws, former WWE head writer Vince Russo offers a very different perspective. He thought the crowd went into business for themselves. In fact, EC3 and Dr. Chris Featherstone share a rather fascinating conversation on whether a heel can use such an audience to their advantage or not. What did you think of the WWE Backlash crowd? Let us know in the comments.

    People having a great time at your show, the crowd is alive instead of sitting on their hands. Maybe the Thunderdome WWE crowd is what the lazy writers prefer, but I definitely prefer a crowd like the Backlash one.

      @@James-if3kc The Attitude Era crowd was basically the same thing. Both were loud. Wrestling is at its best when it feels like a party. You want people in the crowd to actually care. I’m glad the Backlash crowd cared that much.
      I agree with Vince Russo about storytelling, but he can’t talk about rowdy crowds when he had to deal with crowds like that every week from 1997 to 1999.

    • @James-if3kc

      @@RonWeassly It's not the same thing. Not at all. What you saw in the Attitude Era was genuine enthusiasm, people loving the faces and booing the heels. True excitement, magic in the air. What you see now, however, is not that at all. What this is, is a bunch of "smart fans" wanting to show how smart they are, hijacking the show just to get themselves over. The constant chanting, the constant singing. Go back and watch the Attitude Era. It wasn't like that at all. They cheered and booed at the right times, and they chanted things that made sense at the right times. Now it's just a contest to see who can be more loud and obnoxious. It's about getting themselves over. They are basically laughing at wrestling. And it is hurting the shows. It's making them unwatchable for the people at home. Russo knows what he's talking about, that's why he can't stand it either. He knows what the Attitude Era crowds were like, and they ere FAR better than these ones because they weren't trying to make themselves the star of the show. And HHH is encouraging this and making it worse. He's always been this way. I was just watching a Sunday Night Heat from 1999 and he was cutting a promo talking about how he got DX "over". Nobody else was using insider terms on tv back then, but HHH was. He has been determined for DECADES to expose the business and remind you it's all fake. And now he's running the company, and he's encouraging these marks to do the same thing.

      @@James-if3kc I can agree that WWE is definitely not as hot as Triple H wants us to be. However, I’ll take crowds like the one at Backlash over no crowd reaction. When people don’t care, that’s a problem.
      And like I said before, you are not gonna get the fans on board with cheering faces and booing heels unless the writing is good.
      I like to think back to that old video someone posted at the Impact zone when TNA was there. One of the writers or producers came out before one of the tapings and said that they are trying to write television and the crowd needs to play along with the show. That was wrong.

    • @RonWeassly
      @RonWeassly 4 дні тому +1

      @@James-if3kc Also, Russo used industry and “shoot style,” words and references in his writing. It wasn’t just Triple H doing this. This style of “shoot,” writing flowed into WCW. Especially the bash at the beach stuff.
      But I do agree that fans need to stop following Dave Meltzer and other backstage reporters. The show is more fun when you have no idea what’s gonna happen next. When I started watching in late 2003, I
      had no idea about wrestling media. I knew wrestling was fake, but didn’t care. Me and my friends would talk about it like any other TV show.
      I went on a message board in 2005 and people got angry for me and was calling me a mark because I was talking about it as if it were “real.” I swear, we are the only fanbase that can’t talk about it like an actual TV show without some dirt sheet reader saying, “You know it’s fake right? You know so and so is a better wrestler than this guy?”
      Yeah, forget those fans.

    Hi I was at Smackdown and Backlash in France (my first ever wrestling shows) and I get your point because sometimes I was worried about what you've talked about. Sometimes the crowd was more focused about "putting themselves over" rather than being focused on the action in the ring, especially with the "phenomenal" chants and the "Simplement deux" ("Only two") routine, I agree.
    But the point is : France received the chance to host a PPV, their very first one. Wrestlers loved what we did in previous live event in the past years so it was our opportunity to prove we love wrestling and we deserved to host more shows. So we went loud. Yes sometimes we went "too far" with the chants probably because we were more in a "let's have a good time" mood rather than a "listen to every word they said" mood. And I understand that as a booker, you could be annoyed by this Vince.
    But the more important thing is : we were never quiet. We were reacting for everything, every wrestler, even the referee and the announcer because we were thankful they were there. We never intended to be disrespectful towards anyone,. And WWE and most fans loved it because it's not that often nowadays that a crowd is so lively and so invested in every move. I think for someone who worked for the company during the Attitude Era with energetic and passionated crowds every week, you can at least appreciate that Vince ;)

  • @DaNIGHTz
    @DaNIGHTz 21 день тому +1

    I see this as a glass half full. You want fan excitement. You want them to have fun and come back regardless of the story.
    You want crowds to be loud. That way the next place has a standard, and you don't want to be the rip crowd.
    Now for mania you can work around that. No way that crowd can handle mania and keep that same level of excitement.
    But I'll take the good of an exciting crowd, yes to American crowds it might be too much but to them it is normal. But you don't get that same level of energy every week. NO matter if fans want to replicate it in the net town. They won't be able to, because it's not normal for them. They can see wwe live in a couple of months if they miss that show.
    Now the DOM effect. When crowds start having fun board they are saying something to management. They are taking a under-name talent and giving them the star treatment, just with BOOs. Like Dom you give them more and hope he grows and learns to handle it naturally and feeds off it. At least they aren't chanting CM punk like Chicago.
    It's not what the crowd is doing, but why are they doing it that's important. If the office learns that they can make money off it. If they fight the crowds they will lose money. That simple.
    No offense Vince but if im booking and a writer comes up to me and says this is bullcrap. The crowd is ruining my script. Im saying, screw your script tonight we are having fun. We will get back on the script next week. Now shut up because i cant hear you over the crowd.
    Im going to go with excitement = money in a place used to having loud and vocal crowds. Im also making a note. Next time we come to france, less dialog and more wrestling. So next time we understand what the fans will bring and we will cater to that crowd.
    I said the same thing about reigns title run. Reigns deserves to be the champion. He has earned a lighter schedule. But sadly, fans don't want that. Fans want a champion who is going to be coming to town often that they can look forward to seeing. Imagine watching the new John Wick movie and John is only in it at the closing act.
    I see what you all are going for and i understand your views and points. Many legitimate gripes. But i think WWE needed that crowd and they delivered. I'm just a fan. But the fans really made an average PPV big-time. They made it feel like a mania event. There is money to be made there. If im AEW im looking at how much did it cost to put that show on there? That's a market we need to book this year.
    I was a fan of the old wrestling. You know what they did in the 70s if the crowd did something the wrestlers didnt like? They did nothing at all. Headlock for 10 mins, armbar on the mat for 10 mins until you stop doing or saying it.

I watched this whole show on mute because I knew it was going to be like this. And HHH will continue bragging about how they're "hotter than ever" and encouraging this behavior. The two major companies are trading places now. The AEW crowds aren't nearly this obnoxious, whereas WWE is encouraging the fans to be like this. Especially on NXT. Can't stand it anymore.
