  • The GRAMMY-winning Boston Early Music Festival is Looking Back at Orpheus this Thanksgiving weekend with streaming broadcasts of two chamber operas based on the Orpheus myth and a special excerpt from our 2017 production of Le Carnaval de Venise, André Campra’s captivating 1699 opéra-ballet. The delights of the Carnival season in Venice come alive onstage in a colorful parade of beautiful, period-inspired costumes and magnificent sets-enjoying games, dances, and in this special 30-minute excerpt, a brilliantly realized “opera within an opera”, a miniature Italian opera on the Orpheus myth. Campra was the leading composer of opera in France between the death of Lully and the emergence of Rameau, and thrilled audiences and royal patrons alike with some of the most gorgeous music in the Baroque repertoire.
Turn on Closed Captions for the English translation of the production.
BEMF will present archival video of the full production as part of our June 2021 Virtual Festival! Learn more and purchase tickets at bemf.org/2021-...

Thank you. I was so pleased to learn that Orfeo was meant to be a parody. I had seen Orfeo performed before and was bored, but you all riveted my attention and made me laugh, especially by Aaron and his magic lyre in "Vittoria mio cuore." So very well done as always. I was very pleased to hear Christian as he is one of my favorite basses. Thanks Boston EMF for doing America proud.

Yes, I get it, so it's ItaLiAn opera, so they found the arias are ludicrous. But all the overacting damages this otherwise stupendous production! Would be nice to peel off that layer of kids show gestures.
