  • When the MV X-Press Pearl cargo ship sank off the coast of Colombo in Sri Lanka, countless plastic pellets or nurdles littered over 700 km of shoreline. Nurdles, the size of lentils, are almost the size of coarse sand, so are nearly impossible to hand-pick off the beaches.
The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) in Sri Lanka and marine conservation organisation the Pearl Protectors has been using sieving tools to clean up the debris.
But as the monsoon season threatens, all efforts to help with the cleanup are have become dire.
    Enter the 'Sweepy'.
Produced by our friends at BeachTech in Germany, the machines are fit with a mesh that can sieve out tiny particles like nurdles efficiently. They can also help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 by reducing the manpower needed for cleanups.

I hope that the ship company and insurance are helping to pay for the cleanup? Manpower and involvement is great, but on this scale (big ) you need large machines helping. Best wishes.

Beach combers 2-3 times the size and probably 100x more efficient than these 3 put together can be rented for this project. Many beaches across the world have been using them.

Don’t these nurdles float, could you use flotation to separate the sand from the plastic pellets (polyethylene), just a thought.

MEPA, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Greenpeace, and other international organizations should be looking at charging the ship owners and the country of nurdle manufacturing (China in other words) for the clean-up expenses.

Lol I like how you blame the manufacturers. Do you have 2-5x as much money to spend as you’re now? I bet if you really tried, you could live your life with very minimum of such plastics. But I don’t see you doing that. You think if we force the manufactures to stop, everything with the magically fixed. It won’t
