- For the past 8 months, we have been busy cleaning rivers in Bali, Indonesia. We have collected over 300,000 pounds of plastic and our cleanup operation is growing quickly! We are catching this plastic through our 50 TrashBarriers that we have installed in our rivers, with the goal of preventing plastic pollution from entering the ocean. We'll be installing 50 more of these this year!
Stay tuned for episode 2 of our Sungai Watch update series!

These are the people that deserve more media attention! Your are real heroes for cleaning up polluted rivers, thank you for what you do.
Teaching people to dispose of their garbage properly would save you a lot of work.
At a lot of locations there is no garbage pickup at all so people either burn it or dump it
@@mikeshawbrook-selfrelianceNo excuses for destroying the eco system.
@@mikeshawbrook-selfrelianceTell your government! Stop littering.
@@larajones175 I am talking about their government. I personally live in the Netherlands, one of the cleanest, most environment friendly country in the world. But feel free to jump to conclusions
@@mikeshawbrook-selfreliance I wasn't. All excuses are invalid for littering.
The key is education and understanding by the local population. Local governments should provide proper waste management and offer employment in this industry.
I LOVE these people!!! When I saw the person sorting different color bottle caps my jaw dropped. That level of work and detail that goes into it. Not just throwing the trash in a landfill but working very hard to understand the origins and bring responsibility back to the corporations responsible for creating the trash to begin with through gathering data. Also providing jobs to the local people give them income and creates a community of people that are more likely to care.
Every video I watch tells me to like and subscribe and I rarely do. He never said to like and subscribe but I immediately did!! I am a trash picker where I live. I love people who are working to leave the world better than they found it but this is next level. Thank you so much for your work! Godspeed and many blessings to you!! ❤
This is fantastically jarring!!! Everyone needs to see this.
Thank you for your support, John! 🌊
Not us, we don't litter where I live.
The Philippines are responsible for a staggering 36% of the world’s ocean plastic far ahead of number 2 India at 12.9%
You absolutely right!!! All human in this world must watching this!!
@@Dept246 India forbidden plastic
The scanning plastic packaging to see the manufacturers that are contributing to the problem is a great idea because there is a need for packaging to be changed to compostable materials. Even if a consumer disgards waste responsibility there is way too much plastic garbage. At least you have the data to present to show the amount of their product' packaging is ending up in the waste stream. Metrics are so important.
Put a 20% surcharge on all plastic contenders and the responsibility of the companies that are selling there products! Do it now.
How about stopping people from throwing trash into the rivers and waterways?
@@BusterNoggins The government in that country would have to start to proper garbage disposal programs and have punitive fines for people and businesses that don't follow the rules. They would have to educate the people and themselves to change their mindset. Because in many of these countries there is no proper waste disposal so people throw trash and raw sewage into the river.
It is the country’s problem. Their governments do not impose fines on the people who litter.
since 80th, we made that problem.
I was a part of a waterway cleanup here in Inda a few years ago. We just used the age old method of trapping different size debris using just fishing nets. Fishing nets are super strong the larger fish they have to catch. So we set up 4 points of cleanup. Large nets, Medium-large hole nets, medium nets, small to medium hole nets and small hole nets to catch all kinds sizes of debris at 500-750 meters on the river. Ofcourse, it was not a big cleanup, but we removed approximately 7-8 tonnes of waste and debris from the river.
2 ends of the net were sunk using stones and the other ends above the water were tied to trees or the truck that was to carry the debris. This only for the bigger nets since they get very heavy with all the trapped stuff.
THIS is what every country should be doing. BRAVO to these fine, dedicated people!!!
Thank You to all the people who are helping to cleaning the rivers hopefully this can happen all over the world well done everyone.
Yes. Convince gov to let everyone that wants use an acre of free tax free land to grow their own food and live on. Ban farm subsidies. Food packaging is a leading cause of trash. People growing their own food greatly reduces food packaging trash.
@B vegan Now I agree with you all the governments need to start listening to the people who voted them in and the manufacturers need to try and stop using so much plastic it's shocking we need to stop this before it's to late .
@@susangreen8820 people could try to grow more of their own food to stop buying as much food packaging. The manufacturers make it cuz people buy it.
@B vegan Now your right people need to be shown how they can grow their own food it's not to hard I learnt if I can do it anyone can .
@@susangreen8820 the issue is gov not letting people use land to grow their own food, not so much that people dont know how to grow food. Plant food forest. Rain collection. Automatic watering system. Grey water system.
A big THANK YOU to all of you from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 ❤🌷🌷🌷
I'm glad that this is happening. The tourist trade has spoilt so much of Bali. Even 30years ago, my first visit, the change was visible. Glad to see that organic material was being left in the river, feeding the natural cycles.
Phenomenal work. Manufacturers AND consumers. People pollute. In Bali that would be residents AND tourists. Locals must be involved.
We need to make this channel get some traction so more people can be environmentally friendly
Thank you, we appreciate that!
the places that are calling for the environment to improve are the ones hurting it the most. look at CA

People generally are… this is either a charity with very well paid directors or a UA-cam channel making money from filming a charity or local volunteers..
This, not demented California rules, makes a difference.
I'm glad there is people like you in the world.
I would give you million likes if I could. Your enthusiasm is priceless! Thank you for doing this enormous job! Hopefully, the awareness amongst local people will be greater too and all that plastic and other rubbish will not go into rivers.
REALLY I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR MORE CLEANING ON THIS WORLD
A Brilliant thought, finding the manufacturer and holding them accountable as well for the pollution they generate. They have to be held responsible too.
Why are manufactures responsible for people throwing trash in rivers or oceans. In Palopo we watched families have outing at the pantai and taking the trash and throw it all in the ocean.. how are manufacturers responsible for those fools 😢
@TB-rp3ug they are responsible because in the end, there is nowhere for these single use plastics to go. Cannot even recycle them into other plastics. They are designed to be thrown away and buried in the landfill. Instead they can consider the full life cycle of such products and determine how they can change it to be biodegradable within a few months.
This should be shown on national TV in England What great work your doing thank you 😘
are the English notorious litter-bugs?
@@natalliaf6387 English, Welsh, Scottish, yes sadly. I collect items for my walks, but there is so much more.
Nobody watches national TV but boomers
The earth, neighborhoods, and streets are not dumping grounds, nor is it a giant trash can. Littering, from individuals, companies and corporations needs to change today. Make it law, legal and a global responsibility. Local, city, state, national and global organizing is crucial. Communicate, educate and let's change it together. Thanks for the work you and others are doing.
Wonderful when i was in bali i was really sad to see so much plastic everywhere in such a beautiful place love from australia
It's super impressive how quickly this project is growing! Congrats and thank you for all the work that you do! 👏🌊 I'd be very interested to learn more about your data analysis - is there a report you publish?
We're so grateful for our community! You can download all of our plastic data reports on our website at www.makeachange.world/sungaiwatch. We have a video coming out soon about data :)

Incredible work! I love how you’re getting the community involved especially by giving them employment during the pandemic. I’d love to know where some of the trash goes after
Thank you very much Lauren for your kind words. We are really trying to get the community as involved as possible as it is only all together that we can hope to solve the problem.
Regarding where the trash go, we will focus on showing this in the next episode 🤗

I’d love to know where the masks go…. There’s millions of masks in the oceans… whose going to clean them up?
Yes, during the pandemic would see masks littering the parking lots in shopping centers. Some people think that everyone should pickup after them!
Recycle
This makes me so happy! I wish every community had a cleanup day every week
We are all responsible for this mess and we all need to do more to clean up as these wonderful people have!
Remarkable. True testament that one person CAN make a difference and bring great change 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
You might want to watch the video again there was more than one person cleaning up or is it like the old British days where the coloured people don't get counted only the white person running it
This is amazing. Great to see people doing the hard work we need to do to save our environment. You are all incredible. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much Abi! We're boots-in-the-water everyday cleaning rivers but it's worth it!
Something that we had back in the day here in the states was if you gathered glass bottles and tin cans, you could take them to specific stores or facilities and get paid per pound. If either the big businesses of each product found or the government implemented such a program, more and more citizens would get involved and it would also help with increasing incomes which would help the economy. Keep up the fantastic work!
Glass bottles have almost been entirely replaced with plastic, most of the packaging can not be recycled, most plastics cant be recycled. Remeber when the green folks banned paper bags? Plastic bags cannot be recycled because the jam the shredders lmfao. Paper bags could be super easily recycled and yet the green folks pushed the us to use plastic bags. Dont belive me? Look at your recycle bin, it literally tells you not to throw in plastic bags
It so great to see you and others helping to fix these huge societal problems. Very inspiring
Congratulations. This is the first group I have seen focusing on the river where the overwhelming majority of ocean pollution comes from. Well done
Although focusing on the manufacturers is skipping over the people more directly responsible for where it ends up. Chances are the towns along the rivers don’t have adequate trash collection, or people are directly tossing their trash into the environment or both. That’s the target.
Agree. Going after the companies doesn't make any sense. This is a local issue and needs to be solved there.
thank you so much for what you are doing
Thank you for your support Bea! 🤗
Very inspiring! Thank you everyone involved for your hard work and caring.

Amazing work! You and all the volunteers in Bali ROCK!!! I can't believe how bad it has gotten..I was there in the mid 1980's and noticed the alarming trend of mini blue clorox bottles (and of course, the chlorine) in the river from laundry but never imagined it would get this bad. I remember at the time feeling that a lot of the problem was that not too too long ago, everything that people used in Bali came from nature and was therefore bio-degradable. It takes a change in thinking to understand why we need to do things differently. Where I currently live in the USA, it's total devolution...it seemed like people were starting to "get" the litter problem way back in the 70's but instead of eradicating that behavior and demanding that packaging and our consumption patterns change, things have just gotten much worse. The city I live in is drowning in trash and nobody seems to care.
This is so amazing! We need that around the world!
Convince gov to let everyone that wants use an acre of free tax free land to grow their own food and live on. Ban farm subsidies. Food packaging is a leading cause of trash. People growing their own food greatly reduces food packaging trash. Help prevent trash instead of just cleaning it up

How can we help?
This is a shocking wake-up call to the whole world! It should also be a wake-up call to governments and industry! We must change the way we live, and the products that we make and use! These people are doing something fantastic in cleaning the rivers, but it's sad that they have to!
This is unbelievable👍👍, the amount of efforts that your entire team puts in everyday is amazing. Great job guys..... Keep doing it
outstanding work done by all these wonderful people. People around all these areas should see what you guys are doing and learn not dump garbage everywhere. We all responsible for keeping this Planet Clean for the next Generations. Thanks.
I love the work you do and always support the cleanup projects around the world, yours is on a bigger scale than others I've seen and I wonder where your funding comes from to employ 250 people and excavators for a long period of time. I want to learn so I can help others.
What a fantastic effort and commitment. I think a part of the problem is that marginal income households have to pay for rubbish collection and disposal. A sponsored free collection service would be a huge investment in Bali's future. Take care Steve.
I like to advocate for a free waste collection with a limit, let's say a 2 parent household with 1 child can make x amount of trash for free. Above that amount they have to pay, another family with more children is allowed more trash. This way it would not only make people less skiddish about trash collection and reduce trash dump but also make people aware to reduce the trash in the first place
@@rubenbraekman4515 Somewhere I heard Bali has a program "Trash for rice"...for every kg of trash turned in for disposal the people receive 1kg of rice.
Awesome! Thank you all and everyone for collecting trash! Where ever you are! ❤
WHAT an amazing job. Applauses. 👏👏👏
Inspiring ❤️ I pick up thrash from my local river when canoeing. Nowhere near as much as you but now I feel motivated to get out even more

Wow. Well done. I collect tiny amount of litter through litterati. But you are on another scale. Well done.
It's unbelievable what you're doing there! Can't understand that we humans do this to nature and deal with garbage so carelessly. I hope that there will be a solution as soon as possible to end this littering. A big thank you to you helpers and a lot of strength to get through this!!! Highest Respect!!!
I know I’m super late to this, but I just found this video. I work in marketing for a pizza company in the US and setting up school fundraisers is honestly a great idea. I regularly set up dine-to-donates to help schools, PTOs, and non-profit organizations raise money and even if the initial impact is small, through continued fundraisers and marketing it can make a real difference. Marketing can be as small as reaching out through email personally. If the local schools can’t facilitate raising money for an outside company, I’d even look into tourism boards or tour guide companies. Capitalizing on the large tourist population could help you raise a decent amount to continue cleaning Bali’s waters. Tourists will definitely appreciate clean beaches, oceans, and rivers and may be willing to chip in to help! Keep up the amazing work!
Great work. So smart to make the company's held accountable as well as getting the locals involved to help clean up their local waters. Keep up the great research and hard work.👏 It is amazing to see the before and after results of your hard work.

Great work! Amazing how you can get the locals to first of all have a job, but then also educate and make them aware of the problems with pollution. They will tell their family, who will probably change how they treat trash too. I really hope the government will help do something that will minimize the trash and make it easier and more sustainable for people to get rid off.
