    • @formes2388
      @formes2388 3 дні тому

@@ArneBab Not really. Larian didn't burn the bridge: Hasbro did - or Hasbro of the Coast, or WotC, whatever you want to term it but Hasbro of the Coast has a good ring to it.
Larian was THE company to continue this, they had passion, know how, ability, and BG3 getting game of the Year is a huge success. Hasbro simply needed to keep the team of people interacting with Larian, and do a far better job going "Everyone, we understand that some of our executives and managers have made calls that have made the community extremely upset. We are taking steps to remove those actors, and ensure people who respect the franchise and history of the game are being made the custodians going forward. We are going to continue to work with Larian, and those teams of people who have brought emense value to the D&D franchise, to ensure that our fans and shareholders continue to see great value from this Franchise, and that we continue to attract new creative talent, and players into the franchise to explore, grow, and share the world that has been created over the last 50 years".
Thing is: Hasbro of the Coast are being ran by the same diversity over all else, equity over equal treatment idiots who are grinding society into the ground. I'm all for fair treatment - but lets get over this stupid idea that diversity is a strength: It has benefits, but it has downsides - and you put two people who are culturally polar opposites AND YOU WILL GET CONFLICT, we need teams of people that show respect and dignity, that strive to work and build something for tomorrow on the shoulders of the giants that we all stand on.
Ok: That was a little long winded.
Larian was going to release this kind of tool sooner or later no matter what, and if Hasbro of the Coast had been smart they would have brought it out as a full blown campaign editor, and worked with Larian to create a basis for a VTT using digital assets, and perhaps improved flight movement and the like in order to empower that kind of interaction. But Hasbro of the Coast has like zero forsight into how that, combined with official packs, campaign modules, and more could have made them ludicrous amounts of money. And everyone would have won.
What Larian did, was thread a needle: They worked to create a soft locked tool, that fulfilled the contractual obligations, and oops - someone unlocked it. Basically, the only reason I suspect (and will likely never be confirmed), that this took so long is that Larian had to make sure the tool would pass rigor by being able to demonstrate that it was an effort to fulfill the contract while supporting modding which was, a promise made.
Larian didn't burn the bridge: Hasbro/WotC obliterated it, and were left woundering why a company like Larian decided to be done with them.

Yes, hobby developers and hobby modders will launch large mods as soon as modding is sufficiently established.
I assume it was complex in the beginning because they designed the system to be very abstract and modular, allowing for more powerful tools built on top of that abstract code.
Once you create your abstract code and follow it with an intuitive, e.g. graphical user interface, your workflow will be much faster.
Just imagine a function f(x) where x is something you want implemented, e.g. B. an weapon. So you enter x/weapon of your desire without having to program or understanding f.
This is a very simple example, but I think it's easy to understand.

My dream scenario for BG3 is that people become great at making campaigns and starts releasing old classic campaigns the way Neverwinter Nights did.
Just imagine being able to download any campaign from the last few decades, starting a fresh party, and then just taking that party from campaign to campaign, from adventure to adventure.
That would probably be the closest I could come to reliving my best memories of playing DnD.
I had a small group of friends that were interested in DnD when I was a kid, one of my friends had an older brother that played in the 80's/early 90's.
We started playing and had a party of adventures that went through campaigns togther for little over 10 years.
Now it's been over 15 years since I played tabletop rpg's, that old friend group has grown up, started families, and scattered throughout the world/country.
Games like BG3 are the only real way I can experience those old memories again, and this video filled me with so much hope.

I think it is important to realise how the character of developers impacts how news like this is viewed.
For Nintendo and a lot of the bigger companies known for taking brutal legal actions against anyone trying to play their game in a different way, or make more for it, news that a mod came out because the original code was so easy to access and alter, the story would be that they weren't competent with their programming and to be careful not to make too much waves or this nice thing we had would vanish.
For Larian, with how open they are about loving games themselves and supporting player choice, we all believe that this was a deliberate move and we praise them for it.
Not saying it ISN'T, but I do love how it's yet again proven that being a company that tries to put the players first, as much as possible, CAN most definitely be a path towards succes. Not just because they've made one of the greatest games of all time, but because they have earned the goodwill of the gaming comunity. We know they are thinking of the next game as something a bit smaller in scale, but I think most people are still looking forward to it and trusting them to do it right.

They are merging their main product into digital applications themselves, probably with a bunch of DLC/premium content/subscription models involved and at the same time try to narrow the space for independent content creators for their non digital products. Having a fully modable BG3 that enthusiastic designers could use to create their own campaigns, is competition for exactly the demographic they want to reach with their new digital products.

The main downside to this is that anything that goes thru the 'official' site will be 'curated' by WotC/Hasbro.
Meaning they can (and will) gut anything made with the unlocked kit. (unless it confirms to their 'vision' of course)
Pc users will be fine, we can use the stuff via downloading from the nexus (or elsewhere, if need arises)
Truthfully tho, this is exactly what I hoped they would give us.
WotC and Hasbro want to turn DnD into a monstrously monetised abomination that swallows every penny people have, then comes back to suck the marrow out of their cash drained corpses.
Once Larian quit from them, I knew that they would start monetising the hells out of everything baldurs gate 3, while spending as little as possible towards a good version of baldurs gate 4.
Turning the in game assets into digital items to monetize is cheap, fast and easy, compared to trying to sell us physical versions.
So while the console folks love of the game will last a couple more years....the pc players will hopefully still be doing stuff with BG3 years or even a decade later.
Hasbro will just have to settle for the console only crowd.

They said that because they are under contract with WotC which probably told theim something along the line of "don't you dare giving theim a tool to make custom campaign, this would destroy our futur gaming business and we'll sue you"

The main issue of trying to do a DM mode is that BG3 is fully animated. In DOS, all you has to do was give characters text boxes, but this one there’d need be more animating to be done when you go into a story segment.
Maybe they could get by with implementing text boxes and VO work? But such expanded custom stories wouldn’t match the quality of the base game without animation.
So that’s one of the bigger reasons they chose to not implement DM mode officially.

Basically Larian gave us the base we need to make it possible ourselves.

I can’t wait did this kind of stuff to start rolling out from the nexus. I’d love to see at least some custom additional followers to add to your party with their own unique story and interactions

Love Larian, whether or not it was their plan! I've wanted to give modders some time to use the new tools and whatnot before I play through again but it's only a matter of time. The Mystic class mod was one of my favorites several months ago

I wonder if they balanced out Mystic, they were oddly op in 5e

It would be wild if modders went as far as hiring the original voice actors to voice new scenes. I know that Wyll's actor has a Cameo account. And modders have accomplished some insane things in the past.
Maybe we really will get the DLC we deserve.

From following rumors, leaks and announcements from WoTC it appears a lot of the future WoTC strategy is to have an official D&D virtual tabletop developed internaly that will be full of microtransactions. As shareholders have spoken openly before they see D&D as undermonetized because the people buying most products are DMs and not players.
WoTC first attempt to prepare for this was changing their open gaming license to stop support for third party content and, maybe most importantly, to stop other virtual tabletop platforms they don't own from supporting the game. This backfired because of community opposition but the plan still continues. They had a test for their virtual tabletop and they have opened listings for AI specialists. Rumor is that they intend to have AI DMs as part of this new virtual tabletop.
It's very likely that WoTC saw modded campaigns for BG3 as a direct competition to this virtual tabletop, specially the AI DM feature.

Larian Studios devs are tricksters in the best sense of the word, and it wouldn't surprise me if your theory is true.

I feel like this is a deadpool game situation "I will now pull this lever to dispense an explosive barrel! This lever over here! The one I am pointing at! I hope No one else finds this lever!"

I think you're on to something. Unlimited modding ability, or just being able to make our own adventures/campaigns in BG3, would also complete with WotC Project Sigil VTT. Only with BG3 mods, the community would get things made by passionate modders & teams creating the things we want, instead of what WotC's marketing team thinks will generate them the most revenue for them.

I think you’re right that they intentionally released this but as covertly as possible, but I don’t think sticking it to the corporations is the main reason (possibly the cherry on top). I think they wanted to plant the seeds for the next generation of creative thinkers and game designers who will have the same love for DnD as they do. They put so much care and passion into this game and I really believe they want others to top them in the name of progress.
