17 years from now? I'll be 99, if I'm still here. Yes, I'm 72 now and have played Arena when it came out (not called and Elders Scroll game then), Daggerfall, Battlespire, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim (started that in 2013 due to hardware requirements). I currently have over 17,800 hours on Steam for Skyrim and SSE/AE. I'm retired, so I've got the time.

It’s not that the studio is too big. Todd needs God Howard’s ego maybe, but now they have too many big companies above them: Microsoft and ZeniMax. This is going to inevitably lead to content paywalls, technical problems beyond the norm, always online/DRM, live service monetization, etc.

Yeah, looking at the direction gaming is going, the massive time gaps between new entries, and how Skyrim pretty much proved to Bethesda that the community will support these games for years. I can totally see TES 6 essentially being a "forever game" that gets yearly updates that adds in new lands, quests, spell, etc. Like the base game might be Hammerfell but the whole of High Rock could be straight added in as a dlc zone, we also have the whole of the Eltheric Ocean and all the islands in it that could be future dlcs as well, like being able to visit the Systres in the Fourth era would be really cool.

One thing i can agree to is that the elder scrolls 6 will probably be Todd Howard's last Elder Scrolls game. As for the company they'll keep milking the franchise dry until its a dead.
But im at the point were i don't care if it's bad or good anymore. i just want more lore and to see what happens to the Thalmor and the empire or even just the civil war canon ending.
One thing is for sure tho elder scrolls 6 will either revive the series or make everyone go back to Skyrim.

if you havent played the older games, literally all of them are debatably more interesting than Skyrim. Skyrim is the most watered down as everyone says, and has the least amount of lore strangely. got rid of a lot of books and retconned a lot of lore from previous games and the books that they omitted. Morrowind is the magnum opus when it comes to lore, main questline, gameplay (but this is debatable). Daggerfall and Arena are both free on Steam and definitely worth the play. they’re fun, honestly hold up to this day and it’s nice to try out the roots of Elder Scrolls. Oblivion is ofc beloved as well, but it has its flaws.

Elder Scrolls 6 doesn't have to be a exceptional game just a decent base for mods, better if there's access to dev tools, to be honest Skyrim itself is kinda mediocre as a rpg or a open world rpg when it comes to enemy variety, combat, progression, quest, spells, etc, but does things good enough to entice you for long periods of time, and it can be a fun world to mess around in despite it's flaws.
I do expect a creation club for Elder Scrolls 6, & for the game to be the buggiest thing in existence on launch just like any modern Bethesda game, I don't believe Bethesda can make great/good games anymore, but I think they can something halfway good.
Bethesda knows if they drop the ball too hard even modding can't save their game, like Starfield, & they are investing a lot into ES6 to be a long lived game, that's why I expect them to not mess up so badly.

    @theredheadhenry 2 місяці тому +14

Yes. This has got to be it. I’ve been playing ES since the release of MW and OB 20 years ago. This is what always felt like to be the next step eventually. We had some sort of consistency with games releasing every 3-5 years for sequels. To get to that next Provence and that would be its own game and with every “next Gen console” or advancement in tech. But gaming and the way games work has gotten to a point where it’s taking way too long to be able to sustain waiting for “the next game.” Think about how many AAA games over the years have taken longer than 5 years to release a game. Or how many companies had to postpone and tell fans “hey we know we announced this game to release this year but guess what we need another year.”
This never happened. And it’s become the norm.
This video perfectly explains a lot. If Beth did this, it would be a massive game changer and a huge shift in gaming. The new Halo game tried this and I think it kinda failed for a lot of reasons. But this dude Lorecast is right, whenever you hear Todd talk about “Our games lasting ten years, thanks to modding and being great or this or that.” He’s indirectly or directly dropping hints that “we used to design our games to sustain for a few years but didn’t know they would last 10-15 years. So what if we made a game that actually could do that.”
It always seemed to me that eventually, Beth would have to make a ES game that essentially combines all the provinces into one single player game, and continued to update that singular game for years. It had to be the next step. From a business model perspective it makes more sense to do that now as these companies can not continue to take 6,7,8,9,10+ years to make games and then the game aren’t even finished or are buggy. It’s not sustainable. This video is 100% correct, Beth and other companies can not take this long between games anymore. They need to plan out a game that can last for a long time with updates, dlcs, mods, and large expansions exactly as Lorecast said. Every year two years another Provence drops and the map expands and in between that to sustain players is mods, little dlcs, etc… and every two years or so when they drop the next province it’s like getting essentially another game packed with content that being built upon the engine.
I hardly ever write comments especially this long, but I love ES and this video was something I think a lot of us think about. Or hell can’t even put into words cuz ya know something is just off with having to wait essentially 15+ years till the next title in your favorite game series.
    I’ll wrap up with this:
Picture this… it’s Todd’s last big game. He’s going to announce it at some point on stage. “It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for, Elder scrolls 6.” Behind him is a massive screen with the title ES6, he gives a quick speech and they cut to the first official trailer and at the end of the trailer the logo reveals “Elder Scrolls 6” but wait that doesn’t make sense, wheres the subtitle? Where’s the region? They cut back to Todd and on the screen behind him is a map with the region they showed in the trailer. “Hammerfell will be the location of this game. But we got to thinking about how are games are played and sustainability and looking towards the future.” The screen behind Todd then zooms out to show all the Provence’s of NIrn and he announces “Elder scrolls 6: Tamriel will encompass all the regions of Tamriel over the next 10 years starting with Hammerfell.”
The crowd cheers as they realize they will be getting content consistently for a game that has been designed to last and be updated for at least a decade as Todd retires on a potential high note going out with a bang having just changed Beth and potentially gaming.
It would essentially help fix or mend those gamers who feel betrayed or have lost faith in Beth. “We know we have messed up and we want to make things right.” So they give us a game that’s essentially multi-year long content updates of many games in one.
It’s a long shot for sure. But perhaps it’s time to shake shit up in the community.

Also a fan since Morrowind, and I have to say I agree with your comments. This guy has put forth a very logical idea for the future of gaming in general. All of us can see that games have sort of hit a wall in terms of innovation and new tech. And the longer waits for new games, coupled with the increased expectations of a growing fan base means that if something doesn't change soon, AAA titles could be a thing of the past. It's odd to see indi developers making games that get higher praise than modern major AAA titles. We may see a way forward for our favorite gaming franchises in lorecast's theory.

@@mrphiloseroctopus5069 when you look at it as a whole, we really are in a sad state of gaming right now. AAA titles that before had no issues getting out games every 2-4 years are now backlogged for whatever reason. The technology has advanced so much that to get a great game now takes half a decade or more. There’s so many examples, plus examples of games that are in production for so long, state a release date, then miss the release date, and then when the game is finally released it doesn’t have promised features, is buggy. Then you have micro transactions and the “corporate greed” side of gaming. I get it studios need to make money. But at the sacrifice of a poor product. It’s sad. Beth is a perfect example of this in recent times. 343 is another example. AAA games and the industry need a change in corse. Bethesda wants to commercialize and control modding, at least on the console side, idk if they could stop Nexus. I expect TES 6 will have a marketplace similar to Minecraft.
If they can get modders to make content for pennies, while appearing to be proconsumer and giving modders an outlet to make money, then they look good on the surface. Most people won't think twice about the commercialization of mods and there is clearly a market for it.
The problem is that the quality of what Bethesda produces compared to what some modders produce is night and day.

      This.
Before I quit Halo Infinite, it was a similar feel, except the devs were charging for their overpriced armor shop.
The developers (343) stopped making any new content, and seemingly only relied on the Forge community to churn out new maps for them to slightly tweak for matchmaking.
It just feels like a huge lack of passion, IMO.

    • @panzer00
      @panzer00 2 місяці тому +4

@daviddao8328 There is a new trend of developers soliciting "feedback" from the "community" to implement rather than having a solid design plan.
The most popular ideas are implemented into the game in some form: Dying Light 2 adding firearms after explicitly stating multiple times that DL2 will never have them and even having a quest that explains why there are no guns but screw it, people wanted guns so they added them. They even have a "community feedback" tab on their website where anyone can post their ideas to possibly be implemented, depending on popularity and potential.
Starfield did the same shit with adding the rover.
Instead of developers being accountable for their lack of design philosophy or proper feature planning, they rely on their "community" to do it for them after they release a half-baked game and the playerbases praise them for it. They are praised for "listening" to the players; these playerbases are so dumb.

    • @ElderScrollsLorecast
      @ElderScrollsLorecast  2 місяці тому +4

Absolutely. And that's part of the plan as I laid it out. My idea would move more of the critical world design away from modders and back to the developer, leaving smaller projects more in the modder's space. And if they make crappy mods and ask for money, they'll get called out by the community. The quality mods will rise to the top.
Or maybe Bethesda could implement a quality control requirement where mods have to be reviewed and green-lit before being added to the store as purchasable. Otherwise, they can go on the store, but they have to remain free.
There are many ways this could play out.

The one thing I think of to counter this, is that one of the nice things of tes is the big historical events of that time that you are in. Oblivion crisis, Skyrim civil war etc. if you have one game were you add more parts to you will stay in a game where the world has a certain context. You can certainly continue to add to that for a very long time. But if you want to freshen it up you would still need to create a next installment further in time. One with a completely different context. Or they will need to have a game where, when you start the game you can choose which starting date you take which will alter the maps, npc, stories etc in the game to the context of that time. It is possible. But would require enormous storage capacity to be played after a while. The amount of content stored on the computer for one game would be so that the computers most people have now don't have enough space to download it. So that might mean you would need to choose before hand, what part of the game (start date) you want to download on your computer.
One of the reasons for this thought is that, tes are RPG's I can only roleplay a necromancer, holy warrior or thief in the same context so many times before it gets boring. But give another contexta

Success is the needed key here for a "live service lite" game. Frankly, Bethesda just doesn't have that good tiding.
For one, Starfield recently flopped hard. Fallout 4 was seen as slightly less than its two first person predecessors by a great portion or the playerbase. Fallout 76 and ESO were received in varying degrees over the years, but generally ranging from poor to acceptable. The last game they made in this RPG genre that was unquestionably beloved was Skyrim. 13 years ago.
You're right that Bethesda is certainly testing the waters with creation club in Fallout 4 and Skyrim. But again, creation club has also been recieved extremely poorly. The prices are seen as absurd for content seen as much more poor than free mods. And of course, we've never seen the total financials of creation club, most likely because it's probably not profitable overall. The only way to force profitability in creation club is to disrupt the outside modding scene on purpose. But again, as we see with Starfield, without a community that makes the game better, it can die quickly.
To put it bluntly as a TL;DR: We're lucky if we even get a game with the quality of Skyrim with TES6. Only bad things can come from Bethesda attempting to force this next game as a permanent framework.

I see what you're saying, but it's different in a few major ways. With the Sims, you're getting regular minor updates and each costs a fair amount. This quickly becomes hundreds of dollars. I'm not suggesting that.
With this, you're getting the equivalent of an entire new zone, new quests, items, etc - basically an entire new game, every 2-3 years (like they used to do), but instead of paying full price you're paying DLC costs ($20-$40). So it's big content releases at a discount. $20 to $40 instead of $60 to $80 (depending on platform).
It's a win-win. It's like getting a new game every few years for less money. That's the main point.

But within a contained experience such as a base game and a set of a few expansions/dlc, the path of the character is controlled and some assumptions are easier to make on how a characters progress is being made. In a continuous world game as suggested in this video where a player in theory could drop in at any given expansion, I believe the problem would be greater.
There is also a story based argument connected to the above, given the tendency of prophetic heroes in the elder scrolls I have little hope that the writers are able, or if it is even possible, to ground a story to the point where each expansion could provide a climax that is not immediately subverted by the next released area and its stories. This is a problem in MMORPG stories, I'm most familiar with WoW, but defeating the new world ending calamity and then going back to picking up poop in every new expansion is jarring, and I'm guessing even more so in a single player experience where story should be more of a focus.
As an example of the above, given that Skyrim was such a platform, how would one handle the next area, lets say Morrowind, you have defeated Alduin, Miraak, Harkon, what stories would naturally follow for that character? My only point being that the player-centric heroic story telling would likely need a radical shift.
Following the same line of thought the factions and their ranks likely need some changes, if the base game allows you to top the faction ranks, what would be left for the new content released? Could possibly be solved by area specific factions taking on a more central role, such as The Companions for Skyrim.
Player character power, if I can max out a skill in the base game, whats left for the new content. The vertical progression of an rpg seems problematic with a horizontally scaling world, a vertically scaling world has the story problem described above. A positive to the new game releases is that it comes with a blank slate for a character.
Not saying the problems above are not solvable, but when they are solved, are we playing an elder scrolls game as many people would classify them?

Skyrim became long-lived because of it's timing. They aren't taking the steps to be ahead like that again. Now that the rest of the industry turns every action games into a BGS-like open world with rpg elements, I think the niche for TES6 would be to make it as much of an RPG as possible. The more "streamlined console action" it is, the less it will stand out at all.

Well considering Starfield has planets where you can land anywhere on the map and you can disable the invisible boundaries in a cell on the map (they actually made the land cells bigger with the vehicles in the game now), Elder Scrolls VI could be all of Tamriel and maybe even Nirn with continuous loading with walking around the whole planet without boundaries in the game. The first thing they might want to work on in Starfield now that we have the game is figure out going around an entire planet 1:1 scale without it crashing and no boundaries.

The engine is not the problem. The only problem with Creation Engine is that Bethesda didn't invest in updating all of the tech to more modern standards.
If you watch any interviews with former devs, there is a pretty common line of BGS waiting a very long time to make tools or update the ones they have.
I know that is something that happens in a lot of studios, but the vibes when to take in all that info and just their approach to patching etc is that they do as little as possible for a Minimum Viable Product.
So I both love the games and hate their missed potential and I'm down to critique leaderships decisions but the engine itself is not the issue. It's that with many things the leadership at BGS did not choose to allocate their resources in a way that improved the game substantially.

    • @Chinothebad

@@Noctilucent_Cloud7 It's funny with how people say the engine is the problem in being outdated when you consider other engines that been around just as long like Unreal Engine. And that is the problem with Creation Engine when you look at the other engines. Beyond any inherent problems like whatever hardcoding and spaghetti code it has, C.E. problem is just how up to date it is compared to its contemporaries.
Not to mention, for all I read one guy say animations in C.E. were bad along with floaty shooting, I legit wonder how much of that can be pinned on the engine when you consider the people working with it. That aside though, I could still see Creation Engine having it's share of problems that if one wanted a game taking place on all of Tamriel or Nirn, it's how much of that can the engine handle or any engine handle if they wanted the whole of Tamriel.

That all sounds lovely, BUT... The last update for FO4 broke things fairly badly, and what is it, five months later, they still haven't fixed what their update broke. And the more mods you have and longer you play, the worse the problems. That is the opposite of supporting their modding community, and is part of the reason for the problems with FOLondon. Also, I have talked to Starfield modders, and while some things in Starfield are moddable, other very important things, like the follower and NPC systems, are much harder to mod than it is in Skyrim. A major follower creator said they would have to completely re-build the follower and NPC system in order to make a complex custom follower in Starfield. Also, if several mods affect the same Cell, which is fairly common, Starfield does not merge those changes even half as well as Skyrim does. Could they overcome all these problems for TESVI? Sure, it is possible. But is it likely? I fear I am pessimistic. I hope they positively surprise me. Until then, I fear this is wishful thinking.

The community did more of that. A lot of things are still easier to do in xEdit than in the Creation Kit. Bethesda did not make money off releasing modding tools directly, no, but indirectly, they definitely did. Do you think even half as many people would still be playing Skyrim, and buying each new version, if there wasn't a thriving modding community for it? When I said 'supporting their modding community', I meant things like putting a little effort into not breaking huge numbers of mods with every update, or not updating a game with a thriving modding community like FO4, then walking away with it broken in the wake of the update, leaving tool and patch creators to try to figure out what they did, and how to fix it. Based on the lore they've released involving the current events within the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, ESO, Castles and an Article that Todd Howard was in many years ago, prior to the release of ESO, the setting will pretty much be this:
You will be a person who is either a member of the Blades (or will end up joining the Blades) sent to High Rock and Hammerfell on order of the Emperor (The Character you played in Skyrim aided by Ulfric, as this reiterates the tale of Hjalti, which is who we are a reincarnation of in Skyrim, as confirmed by the Skyrim Quest: The Ghost of Old Hroldan) to tend to the myriad of problems in the region, such as a Daedric Plague unleashed by Peryite in High Rock (Reference: Skyrim's Peryite Quest Starter NPC) or to push out Dominion Control over Hammerfell held firmly in place due to Necromancy (Cite ESO's Alik'r Desert Story-line) with the help of the Imperial Legion (Cite the events of The Great War, specifically involving the military strategies of Emperor Titus Mede II and his Generals).
Basically, TES:6 will be a tale involving the rise of a new Empire... and Emperor.
What further cements this is the fact that TES: Castles takes place in High Rock... Specifically Camlorn, which is Imperial Territory during the events of Skyrim... and is undoubtedly still such, due to the ability for your ruler in Castles to regularly send aid to the Imperial Legion, etc... and because you start TES:Castles with an Imperial Advisor.
    Additionally,
We will undoubtedly see involvement with Mannimarco once again... the real Mannimarco and involvement with the Underking (Ysmir Wulfharth / Zurin Arctus) as Major Quests... and I could easily go on with an endless number of things that could happen in the region for notable minor Quests.
Sadly, since it was so long ago, I do not have access to the article (Should've saved it) but Todd Howard was on-record about where he wanted to take the series next... and what Todd says, goes, when it comes down to final say on Bethesda games; He specifically told the interviewer in the writing that he wanted to make the next game like Daggerfall because he wanted to improve on the region's Verticality. However, due to current events within the Elder Scrolls, these regions are key starting points for the story anyway, so they are natural picks.
During the Current Reign of the new Emperor, the territories under Imperial Control would be: High Rock, Cyrodiil and Skyrim... we've already been to Skyrim, so thats out.... this is a comeback story for the Empire after, "new management," was established, plus the complete province of Cyrodiil was in TES:VI, so obviously Cyrodiil is not the choice, which leaves only High Rock; On this alone, we have our Starting region, as the region isn't nearly as Inhospitable as Hammerfell and its endless Desert, but the complete territories of both High Rock and Hammerfell will probably be in the game.
    ----
Now, with that laid out, what can happen that makes sense to the lore, in terms of obvious DLC?
We, as an Agent of the Blades, could be tasked to push back the Aldmeri Dominion in the Provinces of Valenwood and Elsweyr with a final push in Alinor (AKA The Summerset Isles) to put a final end to the Aldmeri Dominion.
    ----
In terms of the Other Regions: Morrowind, Blackmarsh(AKA Argonia), Cyrodiil and Skyrim, nothing is immediately happening in these regions to warrant immediate concern... but things ARE happening... with the exception of Skyrim for obvious reasons (We took care of the problems there.)
    ----
In Morrowind, we have the potential to meet the Nerevarine freshly returned from Akavir, who we will probably help in order to push out the Argonian invaders from the region. This will also Segway into building accurate lore about Akavir, which will probably be an Addition within the next Elder Scrolls game... if this truly wraps up Tamriel with TES:VI. The reason we are able to meet the Nerevarine is because he's Immortal (due to Corprus) and why he would help us is because, Canonically, the Nerevarine is a member of the Blades, therefore making him an Imperial Loyalist.
So, we would probably both help the Nerevarine reestablish Morrowind's Government under Imperial form and customs, along with retake Argonia for the Empire... or we would have another choice...
The Second (Non-canon) choice would probably be this:
We would be able to side with Argonia in cementing it's control over it's newly acquired territories in exchange for Argonia returning to the Empire, fight and kill the Nerevarine and establish Imperial rule in the remnant territories of Morrowind.
... another possibility is the Return of Lorkhan
    ----
With those out of the way, this would leave Cyrodiil and Skyrim as territories which major plots could unravel in... what potential plots could those be?
    Simple... assassination and insurrection.
In Cyrodiil, the Emperor could be assassinated by an Akaviri (or Aldmeri) Assassin and it could be our job to find the Assassin, stop the Akaviri (or Aldmeri) Invasion and bring peace to the Empire... except without an Emperor there is no Empire. So the secondary part could come into play where we find out that we are a secret heir of the late Emperor which has to fight Ulfric Stormcloak (Now High King of Skyrim) for the throne, which would lead to retaking Skyrim for the Empire as the Emperor/Empress yourself and Choosing a New High King to sit upon the Throne, bringing each province into the game full-circle.
    ----
Everything beyond the stuff about High Rock and Hammerfell could potentially happen, should your belief that the Next Elder Scrolls Game will function how you think it will. I wonder how many of these potential plot points might happen, lol

Now every 6 months or so a DLC for a state is released and gets added to the over all map of the US that's been created. Also the older states get updates as well so that they don't look really bad compared to the newer ones. This works really well and I could see this working for games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

If they could pull it off, it could setup TES 6 for a long and bright future but they really have to get this right and that means getting the story and characters right. TES 6 cannot follow in Starfields footsteps. Starfield had boring characters and dry lore. TES 6 needs a wide variety of companions, characters and the selection of the main story HAS to be exciting. It really needs to revolve around the greater war between the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion and there needs to be real consequences to the players actions with large scale battles being present. Characters rly need to be interesting. Have some morally dark characters.

DLCs for map expansion to massive whole new areas is a valid idea. As long as they are as fleshed out as older Elder Scrolls games instead of bare bone frameworks for Creation Club to fill in like Starfield DLCs.

As far as an expansion to Skyrim… I’d heard that obsidian had made a proposal to Bethesda to make their own elder scrolls game with the Skyrim engine, akin to new Vegas, and they stupidly declined. That would have tides fans over and built a great deal of goodwill, to let another studio make a great RPG in the elder scrolls world and they didn’t see it. Another misstep for Bethesda. Maybe they didn’t wanna be shown up again by obsidian. But that’s no excuse, Bethesda just needs to evolve and up their own game

I really like this concept. I'll be 66 soon. I plan to play until my hands no longer work. This model for game production would probably enable me to play as much as possible over the next 20 years or so.

Thank you! I started gaming in the late 1970s when I was in college, playing games such as rogue, empire, advent (Collossal Cave Adventure), etc. on a DECSystem 10. Now I'm having a blast playing Fallout London. Games have come so far. I can't wait to see what comes next.

I wish I could mod this well 😢. I cannot even get Essential stuff like sprinting, lootmenu and better movement without crashing in New vegas. And my computer is just fine.

You're not alone in this line of thinking. I've been thinking along the same lines. I really do think BGS is evolving to creating a different kind of "live-service" game; one that is continually added to and updated over a long period of time. It reduces the overhead of having to do wholesale technology overhauls on top of creating all the new content, it allows Bethesda to continue bringing in more revenue, and gives fans more content to enjoy while they're waiting for the next big game to come. I don't think TES 6 will ultimately be the last one; I do think these games will eventually get major new releases in the series with new features, gameplay mechanics, etc., but I don't think we'll ever see a huge gap in content releases from BGS ever again.
One more thing (sorry, listened to more of the episode): when playing together, I think the model to follow are survival games like Sons of the Forest or Grounded. The world exists in a way that lets people go do things independently and affects just the host's world. There's no reason BGS couldn't build this in as a feature. It's absolutely possible to do if they build it in from the ground up.

The two things I’ve been obsessed with since childhood are pirates and wood elves. I just hope I can explore valenwood in a single player ES game and be a pirate in Tamriel. I just hope I can do that before it’s my time

A multiplayer experience like you described already existed years ago with the fable games. Load into your friends world you’re basically a companion if they have the dlc the items and areas are just locked to them only.
    OpenMW MP is also awesome

I will literally wait a decade for them to add all regions in Elder Scrolls 6

I agree with you and also the context of it all changes. I hope you heard of wayward realms! This zone game play with massive maps would be the best option for us all.

You miss the whole point of the statement from Todd, it's not so they can stop making new games and not make more than 2 or 3 DLC, it's so they can continue to make DLC for 5 or 10 years and still release new games within those universes!

I'm really anxious to see if the idea you presented here, would be implemented. Guess it depends on whether Bethesda sees the value of them and the balance between production time/cost/potential profit make sense

Wow really cool idea. New elder scrolls game with Eso like structure is awesome. I like everything except multi-player aspect.
