We all did. But the silver lining is, it's a happy ending. Colin got his wish and got to see Faye one last time and thank her for being there for him, even when nobody else was.
I wish I could agree with you...but it’s not that simple. If Colin only wanted to see Faye again, he wouldn’t have needed to reach out to the Sigmund company. I think Dr. Eva and Neil mention this at some point. I think the more beautiful thing is that Colin had all that he really needed (his family). It was just a matter of Colin being unhappy near the end of life because didn’t know if he was “accomplished”. So in a paradoxical way, he got help from people he didn’t really need help from to realize his own happiness was there all along. And that to me is one of the most beautiful things to ever realize in life. Being happy with what you have despite all the regrets/mishaps/missed chances.
actually no, even the creator himself come out and explain the outcome, here's my perspective : he just want to make sure he have a perfect life so he won't disappoint Feya when he meet her before he dies. but the thing is, there is no such perfect life in this world. We will always have ups and downs, it is also because of these, they make our lives interesting. Only with the "downs" to compare with, then only you know how great and happy that "ups" are. Colin always regrets about his past not being perfect, because of the promise he made to Feya, his best imaginary friend and mentor.
I play/see games for more than 10 years & only two of them made me cry (I tried but I couldn't stop my tears): Metal Gear Solid 4 & now Finding Paradise - I will buy this game, even though I didn't play it, only watched this video, but I will buy it because those who made it, deserve all respect & all our love for their work.
Goodness, I don't know what to say. This story was totally not what I expected it to be. Never had I once thought that someone would take the normal idea of an "imaginary friend" and turn it into a message so beautiful and so relatable especially for people who struggle with the same problem. Kan Gao, you were totally spot-on with this and I'm grateful that someone understands. I agree, in the end, we all kinda wish for someone to just be there. There's so much I'd wanna say, but they wouldn't be exactly necessary. Instead, I just want to say thank you- to the person who posted this, and everyone who's worked on this game. It's not just a game, it's a story. An art. Something close and intimate to the person who wrote this game. Kudos and God bless! :'D
I wonder what's going to happen with Eva and Neil now, because they just witnessed the first evidence of a subconscious as a person, or at least an imaginary friend. This is going to change their jobs forever because now they know how to deal with these kinds of situations
Thank you so much, TBPK, for presenting this without commentary! When silence of the story itself is the centerpiece of a video game (think Journey!), I prefer the chance to create my own commentary and interpretations in my head. I do agree the dialogue runs a bit quickly, but no-narration trumps that every time! This story can stand alone, and it will, then, seem a sweet story of traditional imaginary friendship, having to grow up, having to let go and move, questioning the loss, etc. However, Finding Paradise is not as simplistic--though it's certainly as emotional--as it might seem. Before judging the "triteness" of this story's theme, I highly, hugely recommend first watching/playing A Bird Story, which is intended as a short story that connects To The Moon to the story's next episode, Finding Paradise. Or if you've seen Finding Paradise first, build the story backwards, as Gao so often does, and bring A Bird Story into the story's fabric after. I've found Freebird's games are rarely just what they seem. Actually, I'm wondering whether each episode (including the 2 extra mini episodes) is part of a larger story arc, such that each episode feels even fuller when seen within the bigger picture. We'll see. ;)
Spoiler warning (Turn back now unless you've finished the game and(or) can endure long, insightful paragraphs!) *ahem* Let's get started: (wall of text ahead) Colin's "condition" actually has real life implications. Humans have psychological defense mechanisms built into our brains to deal with loneliness and isolation once a certain threshold is passed. Colin... He's never had a proper social upbringing- literally no friends+very little interaction with his parents+low self esteem. In response to this, his mind developed a coping mechanism to help him: Faye. Faye isn't the traditional definition of an "imaginary friend" (in fact, anyone can imagine up a proxy puppet in their mind). She's more than that. In essence, she is a sentient mental being- something known as a "Tulpa," created by Colin's mind and very real in his perspective. Colin could touch and hear her like anything else, but since she's created from his brain, other people can't see her. Furthermore, unlike imaginary friends, Faye is fully sentient and behaves like a genuine human would. Think of her as a split consciousness sharing his mind, but is able to visually project herself as a separate entity without his input. She helps him cope with life's struggles when no one else will. "Good" tulpas come naturally. I can certainly vouch for this mental phenomenon. There is someone I know who is important to me... I won't disclose her name, but she's been through tough times. Depression, loneliness, bipolarity, suicidal thoughts. She's developed an entity like Faye that she can interact with. He comforts her in rough times, giving her helpful nudges to not give up her life. I know, I know... It sounds crazy, but dwell on it for a minute. Most people will dismiss tulpas as mere pseudoscience, but they've never truly been dragged down the abyss enough find out for themselves. The human brain will always be such an enigma. Nonetheless, Kan Gao and everyone else at Freebird definitely put quite a lot of thought into this game. I appreciate the work they've done to bring this masterpiece to reality.
@@Ari-ij3cz i don't think collin's daydreaming was maladaptative, since he clearly knew the difference between dream and reality, and he was able to let go once he didn't need her anymore, after he met Sofia, and the thing about maladaptative daydreaming is that the patient cannot and doesn't want to let go of their fantasy, and cannot distinguis dream from reality.
While I appreciate the theory, the story actually makes far more sense without evoking tulpas. Colin may insert a significant portion of himself into her, but he has full control of her. That's why he's able to unsummon her the moment it becomes inconvenient - when he starts getting close to a real life woman.
seeing in "real world", faye actually picked up potato's doll and neil actually saw her driving motorcycle, i guess the whole event in "finding paradise" is actually happened in simulated world that controlled by neil and faye in the "real-real world"

Probably referring to Neil's computer system. He's probably using the data collected from their journeys for some sort of scientific use. I'm assuming that's why he hijacked/modified/replaced the system. Also has some implication toward why he is not attending the funeral. He's not slacking drinking around, he's occupied with the results/process of this "system/world(?)" (her). Edit: Notice the last bit of dialogue. "Is that the 'solution' you were talking about?" *Light on the machine flickers* "Yeah, that's her." Edit2: However, one thing that is not resolved for me is we never hear what Neil said to Faey to convince her to give him the memory link. Neil's proposition was something like, "While you might not like it, I know Colin would." Might not be related... but why would Faey have placed Neil into those memories fragments which lead Neil to realize what's best for Colin? Why would Faey be 'surprised' at Neil giving Faey full control? Why did Neil teleport Faey to that "world" where Eva can't hear the discussion? Doesn't add up, but I'm probably just overlooking something. Otherwise, I feel like the proposition may be related to further benefit his computer system somehow.
