He is also giving a history lesson, Jean Marchand, Gerard Pelletier and Pierre Trudeau were really known as the "Three Wise Men" of Quebec. One thing though, it's not SeaWorld in Niagara Falls, it's Marineland.
The moth joke is the epitome of Norm. He works Dosteyevsky and other literary references in this loooong joke just to have a true groaner of a punch line. That was the joke - that the punchline was sooo bad. He trusted his audience to be smart enough to get it. It wasn't about the joke, it was about setting up the audience. Norm was a genius.
Funny thing is he got the moth joke from Colin Quinn just before going on the show. He just randomly came up to him and said he needed a joke. It was a street joke. But they told him they needed him to fill like 5 minutes so he made the street joke go on to fill 5 minutes.
Norm laughs at the Andy comment at the end because Norm is definitely the kind of guy that would take someone on a 4 mile hike just to show them a turd and then die laughing at their confusion :D
Norm always sounded like he was rambling incoherently, but he was actually a comic who agonized over every work, trying to get the joke just perfect. His schtick was the juxtoposition of incoherence and perfection. That's why he was considered a comic's comic.
He was insanely smart. He was a voracious reader, who read the Russian novelists, books of philosophy and many other things. He became Christian in his later years.
I've gone down hours-long rabbit holes of his comedy and appearances on talk shows. Him with Conan and David Letterman is so good. It's an odd sense of humor where he pretends to be stupid but he's often times the smartest person in the room.
@@famousmortimer7933 He actually was, lol. I remember a story some guy whose name I can't remember told on a podcast about a time he and norm got in an elevator and some guys were discussing some really complex mathematical stuff and he says norm just started talking to them about it like it was some kind of small talk. He also graduated from high school at 14 and got into uni at 16 and I remember on his book club page he would recommend some math books from time to time.

Norm was a wild man lol. He knew exactly what he was doing. Dude got more fun out of making "dad jokes" and make the punch lines into a twist ending lol. He did not care if the audience laughed ....he found it amusing and that was enough lol. Reminds me of the "Moth" joke where he had to kill a bunch of time on Conan's show lol.
Norm was crazy. I could watch him and think, "What he's saying isn't very funny," but I'd be cracking up the whole time. For some reason, one of the funniest guys ever. His moth joke is one of greatest ever.
I love Norm MacDonald. He's my favorite comedian of all time. I am literally typing this comment 19 actual seconds into the reaction. I'm almost sure what the joke this is given the context, but I'm typing early. Norm is literally my favorite guy. It's him, then it's David Letterman like I can't believe I'm rating Letterman as slot number 2 but ffff it's Norm. Not every joke Norm told on these shows was a "Norm" joke, he would never just spoil his own best material for crying out loud, but he could retell an old joke, any old joke, embellish just a bit further upon it, and just spin it, put the right inflection on it, and then make it his own because it made him laugh, it made the host laugh, it made the crowd laugh. Norm respected the art of comedy. He was simply the most hilarious man alive at the time he was alive.
Norm told a "Dirty Johnny" joke on Stern a few years ago, The set-up lasted at least 15 minutes - and then the joke went absolutely nowhere! It was the funniest thing I ever heard. 😅
One of my favorite norm quotes was about talk shows & it goes something like this “my philosophy is basically that a talk show is a big joke, & the audience & the host are in on the joke. & the joke is the guest.” Always liked something about it lol
Love how Norm appreciates Andy Richter's perfect analogy for his kind of humour. He has taken us many times on a four-mile-hike to show us a dog turd. And every time it was totally worth it
Awesome reaction... you get every nuance in Norm's comedy. After watching a few other people's reaction to this joke the past few weeks, apparently it's not such an easy task. 😅
loved norm. he would stick to a bit just as long as he thought it was funny. miss seeing him on conan & watching him stretch simple jokes out as long as possible. absolute legend. rip. ♥
Rip norm😂😂😂. There's a marineland in Niagara falls Ontario. It's similar to sea world. You're correct about norm just making up stories lol that's why he's awesome.
In Niagara Falls, it’s called Marineland. He changed the name from Gauthier to Gatineau (a park near his hometown Ottawa on the Ottawa river). Temiscaming is a town quite far north on the same Ottawa river. Lots of common Canadian historical and geographic minutiae give the story a specificity that lends an air of truth to hide the impending lame pun at the end.
