- Surface Never, Vault Forever. Today we are taking a look at the splendor of a postwar construction vault in Fallout 4.
So uh... I kindof messed up here, and mentioned my Patreon before it was ready for official launch so I guess the cat's out of the bag. If you're interested in checking it out, you can find it here: www.patreon.com/greygaming
The Cabot House has a fully equipped pool table, food that is well preserved, plates, clean glasses, etc and once you leave (fast travel anywhere) and come back, it is once again fully stocked. I go there to get stuff for the aesthetic set up of builds.
I go loot their Mansion respawns like clockwork. I also nabbed Emogene as a companion before I waxed her Pops then I used a Time Travel device to bring Jack back to the present from the past.
Every time I return there's young and old Jack staring awkwardly at each other and when I walk in with young hot Emogene she smirks at her older self and her older self smiles politely and pretends she's not jelly af lol.
It's my version of being Dr. Evil whilst still retaining my stellar Wasteland Rep.
My God I need a life.
Thank you!!! 🙏🙏
@@elifire4147 dawg what the hell, how did you even do this?

Something to consider when building an exterior vault if you don't like the look of the exterior surfaces - the floor foundation pieces for the warehouse and barn sets are the same size as the vault building block pieces, so you can completely enclose an exterior vault within 10-foot thick concrete walls with a continuous cinder-block pattern so it looks like a giant bunker.
I made such an exterior vault st the airport, using a tiny mod that opened up the restrictions on the airport workbench.
I am RATHER GLAD I found your channel. There isn't enough Fallout 4 building channels anymore. Fill that niche with pride, man.
More than you know bro. Tons of the most based thugs who still play (on ultimate survival murder death kill) don't bother comms anymore to avoid the whiney beches.
I like to add one or two beds in the clinic area to act like patient beds
dude.... how have I never thought of that before?
@@Theegreygaming you could also try adding some medical junk around the clinic such as a bone saw, microscope, a chem container & surgical tray on a table for astics.
It's nice to see I'm not the only one who still plays this old game
Same. Just got done with nukaworld.
*cries in still playing dragon age origins and witcher 1*
It’s not like we have anything new to play, and won’t for another 8 years lol.
@@Gubbins_McBumbersnoot u can play the best game ever Fallout 76, it has lot of new dlc's and is very fun to play.
Have you heard of the sims settlements? That team really revived fallout 4
There are 3 spawn points of enemys to this vault, one at the end of one of these tunnels is the ladder connected to a manhole with an exit to an intersection near a super mutant base, one at the door of the shop located at the end of one of these tunnels and the last one at the entrance of the vault 88. I was checking it on other video, because in an old gameplay i had trouble positioning my defenses in the wrong way! 😉
And if you don't remove the barricades, they only spawn at the main entrance
If I add walls blocking the way, will they spawn still?@@pat2rome
@@TheBlackCrow_08 I'm pretty sure they still will, yeah. And if they do, the game will probably teleport them through, since there's no open path between where they spawn and where they want to go.
The strobing is called Z-fighting btw. The game can't decide which object has priority so textures fight in the Z-dimension (XYZ).
That’s beautiful, great job. I’m starting my build now and I’m overwhelmed and intimidated but this gave me hope!
Few rooms in your vault felt little empty so adding more vault tec posters would make this place more alive. For the main building it's really well done, but maybe you should add more power armor stations as a decoration.
Ps. I never bother to clean up this entire location so the raid attacks will just spawn at the entrance. Even if one npc gets stuck in the wall I can just fast travel to teleport him to the main hall were the turrets will kill him on sight.
I spent quite a few hours testing the vault 88 caverns, and a lot of them, despite the changes in elevation and many turns, can be connected via vault objects. I got to the point where I could reach all three corners of the caverns via a single offshoot tunnel on the north side of the quarry. But given how heavily doing this eats into your build limit, and how little extra space is in many of these caverns for rooms, I question what the point of it is. While it feels super satisfying to have this mega-snake hallway running all the way around the caverns, it's not practical in the slightest, and only made me feel a bit more baffled as to what to do with the place.
I managed to connect EVERY SECTOR ... Via Three Tunnels! It was not easy! The worst is that damn Pump Area... You have to reach it via another sector as you simply CANNOT fit a Tunnel at all!
The problem is the settler pathing - They wont normally go to the other sectors... So even if you build down them, They are redundant! It does make Defending Vault 88 far easier - You can in effect create a Labyrinth and take enemies out with ease... but the than that the extra space is wasted! A real shame!
I know there are Mods that fix this issue... As well as mods to improve the lighting... God its shame that Bethesda cannot just offer those mod creators that have fixed the issues a payment and buy the bloody mods!!! They will never fix it themselves after all!
The Mega Snake Hallway though - Yeah, It is Practical for defence!!! LOL!
You can tamper with the build limit by dropping your weapons and storing them in the workbench through build mode. It depletes the "Size"-bar for some reason. I used it to build a skyscraper at Sunshine Tidings Co-op :D
In my first play-through I went with the vaulted ceiling in the atrium. And then running out of room to fit stuff in... Now that I know that that is a mistake I can move forward and construct much more efficient (hopefully) vaults in future playthroughs. Great video and thanks for explaining everything, especially the bit at the end about the vaulted ceiling normally in an atrium. Looking forward to the next one.
You can run wires from the vault wall conduits, too. They don't just power lights. Nice vault!
Title is right. Definitely a noob build. Don’t mean its bad. Just simple and effective. I love it.
Well done. Seriously, who downvoted this?
When concerned with the size of the VT reactor, it is often possible to pillar glitch them into the ground. I use that trick quite a bit at above-ground settlements, particularly if they have sloped areas which can hide nearly the entire thing. I'll then obscure traces of it by placing mutfruit around the area, or leaving just the glowing rods exposed & then fencing around that.
Why mutfruit? For some reason, it just sits right in my head that mutfruit grow better when irradiated. No logical reason.
FYI...
Enemies only spawn from the "tunnels" entrances if you clear and open the secondary and tertiary entrances...
If you excavate the Vault, but leave the sealed "back doors" into the vault, the only position enemies will spawn from is the front door...and at that point, you can just create the mother of all murder-point-holes to deter future attacks. And lets be fair, you can just leave the Vault sealed at that point...even a Megaton Nuke isn't getting through a Vault Door! But...if you're sadistic and want scrap, you'll leave the Vault Door open, and setup scavanging stations near-by...
...Farming raiders is fun! :D
Also,
I agree,
Vault 88 is entirely a disappointing layout and workspace to "create your own Vault" in... the tunnels are awkward, the effectiveness of a Settlement there on the map is minimal at best, and slogging through the Quest just to unlock all the DLC items is super-shite!
Honestly, I dont know why they just didnt enable the Overseer's Desk to act as an ingame Terrain Editor so that we could build our own "Vault 88" entirely...
...as a note, I have actually made a Vault that runs the gambit of the entire space...its awkward, frequently with long corridors, and almost devoid of habitation in some spots...but it is doable to connect up all the parts of the Vault Cavern. Its just shite to do so...
I dunno...
I guess im the kinda person who wanted to make a classic Vault-Tec Vault from the original games, and so, because I cant, this DLC just adds another reason to why I hate playing this Fallout...but yet love playing around with Settlement builds! ...I hate myself. LOL
I use the drug store entrance at University Point as my main entrance since I don't like going through the irradiated quarry. I put 3 to 4 turrets inside the drug store and they take care of any mobs spawning in there. The other entrance is the manhole cover by Milton General Hospital. I usually leave that boarded up. So that just leaves two entrances that need coverage. The annoying part of covering the main entrance is stringing the power lines from the generator up the tunnel and around to the entrance. There I usually put 2 missile turrets, 3 heavy laser turrets, 3 heavy machine gun turrets and a guard post.
Attackers/hostile NPCs (Raiders, Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls, etc.) use the connected underground tunnels from University Point Pharmacy. I witnessed a group of Raiders entering through that route, as if the "Mission Impossible" theme was playing. It's a good idea to have that whole store filled with turrets too, that's what I did :P
Really just waiting for the algorithm to catch hold of this channel and for it to blow up like Ranger Dave or NoRespawns
Your roleplaying really gives me life. I also like to imagine that certain objects are used by the settlers in a particular way when the game doesn't really give me the possibility to actually do that. In addition to that, my raider character gives me a solid reason to be careless with my own living space as I just attribute it to him not giving a damn about where he sleeps and eats 😅
Well done! Even with that dlc's limitations you managed to do a nice looking vault
Good work. Vault 88 is a really tough place to build as a lot of people really struggle.
FYI, if you close the vault door, you can’t be attacked from that route but your supply lines etc still work.
I’ve done a couple of ‘realistic’ vault builds with the aim of being fairly seamless which I won’t link here but worth taking a look at if you want some other ideas.
I really enjoy vault building but it definitely has the steepest learning curve I think
Pretty good, but I think the vault aesthetic should be more claustrophobic. Fully utilize all available space. Place things really close together. Minimalist extravagance. A lot of really nice stuff but not much space. That clinic/barber could have been a 2x2 or even a 1x2. Even your atrium is much too big, my build is a 5x7 and doubles as a food court.
the fact enemies can spawn in a vault or through a closed door, is STUPID.
Damn, I just threw some metal shack prefabs down there with beds and tables and called it good
Fantastic Build.
Only real improvement I would make would be to have some hospital beds in the clinic, and a few hospital props like the Oxygen tanks if they are available in vanilla.
I hope you make your settlements available for download, would love the Coastal Cottage one.
So jealous how good you are at making these buildings. I barely touched for this vault 88. It is too difficult to build.
Vault 88 is definitely a bit of a challenge for beginner builders, mostly because until the player finished the Vault 8 quest line this is the only place they can use most of the vault pieces which function a lot differently than the standard pieces. Also clearing out the entire vault area can be tedious and there isn't really any point in building outside the main cavern due to the AI.
For an above-ground vault, it might be possible to double layer the exterior walls to give you inner wall textures to use outside. A little less unsightly than the crossed beam effect, although not exactly resource friendly 😅
This may just be me.. however I would like to see you defend one of your settlements and watch the turrets work. I get it probably wouldn't be a long video however it would be an interesting outlook on what happens when an attack does happen.
On another note I found you 2 days ago and am now watching all your content and you do a phenomenal job with your videos as well as the commentary on them. Very very good please keep up the good work.
Between this and concrete workshop tabs I think it's only a bit less annoying than the other one. Honestly kinda wish there were pre sets you could load in if you didn't actually want to fight with build set.
You've done a brilliant job here, I'm getting so frustrated with the build mechanisms in this game that I'm almost calling it quits
I honestly enjoy your builds and this one is great.
I can't even get the walls to go together with those corner columns, or even the center columns.
Basically any column at all.
I also found out that I can use Vault stuff on the outside settlements. So Sanctuary Hills is going to get the Vault-tech reactor and Vault-tech Super Reactor, eventually.
About nutrition. I love to think that Mutfruit is a specific food which contains every nutrition itself. Based on the fact, that every other food need 2 to feed 1 person, while Mutfruit is 1 to 1.
Also funfact, but you use the weaker Vaultec Reactor, the globe formed produce much more energy. Actually 2 of them knock out the settlement energy counter with 999.
And you don't need any of those at 21:17 as you can connect your overseer shower or basicly anything to those 21:28
Nice build! I also put an arcade in my vault.
I never hear praise about this DLC, but I love it. I get to make my own vault! With gambling! And hook- er well with gambling at least!
but sadly... no black jack.
Awesome video, I'm working on Vault 88, with a Shack Town in it as well.
Why is Mutfruit the only crop that provides 1 food per plant?
I’m just thankful for your teaching me patience when building! You the man
I don't think I can build a vault settlement ..i get lost too easy..looks great!!!
Could you do a noob build for spectacle island? I'd love to see what you would do with that settlement.
Very nice, I dislike the vault pcs as well & leave it as an open atrium cave w/ some rooms for beds & a cafeteria. Placing my personal beds and workbenches closer to the various exits.
You can find all of the nessesary pool balls at the Cabot House. (Assuming you're friendly with them, taking them won't count as stealing.)
Nicely done! But no vaulted ceilings in a ....vault? Wait until Vault-Tec hears about this. :p
Admittedly I cried a bit thinking of all the unused caverns. lol Given time, you can make a large loop and fill every nook and cranny .... but doesn't really make it any more functional.
So easy to forget Fallout 4 is a whole game and not a population simulation XD
This is really awesome. Extremely well done.
Bro forgot about the Surgery Chair for the Clinic. A Baber Chair seems more in line with the General Stores Area.
Nice video, opinion on spectacle island?
The lighting issue could easily be fixed by just using the lights that are included in the DLC
My favorite thing to do
load up fallout 4 hoping it doesn’t crash immediately
Create my 1,000th new game
Cheat my ass off to get all the good shit
Build a vault
Hate my design
Destroy the vault
Rebuild something decent
Stop playing the game
Months later repeat the process
Does he have a video where he’s building this? I’d like to make this on my ps4
"nice to see theres another vault but theres a settlement nearby I'll mark it on your map"
I am freshly to V88 and still scrapping it... all the pieces is a bit overwhelming
*new pieces
listen i know you said this a year ago but you can type in scrapall in consle commands and it doesent affect your achievments
At the Cabot’s house, there is a full pool set
... idk how you even placed the platforms at main door for turrets... What am I missing ??? what do I need to know???
I would also love to know. Been searching the workshop menu for over an hour trying to find what works. Scaffolding? Wood? Metal? Prefabs? Pls. 🙏😭
@@assassinsarge It looks like he used: Structures > Concrete > Floors > Concrete Foundation
Hey Grey Gaming, I am new to your videos and wanted to say that I really like all the settlements you have built I have a PS4 so I don’t think I will build as big as you have done. I just wanted to say that your idea of a sprinkler system in the hydroponics area with the conduit wires was brilliant! I was thinking of doing something similar in my greenhouses for my settlements. could you maybe make a video showing how you did that?
sure I'll add it to my commonwealth contractor ideas list.
@@Theegreygaming okay thank you
Very nice build. I may incorporate some of these ideas.
I’d make the atrium a workshop with all the work benches and power armor stations
Great video! So freaking cool.
How do you make rooms with the concrete pieces without making it super segmented on the outside
It'd be nice if you went over what pieces you used and the size of the rooms bc as a building noob trying to copy this just made my frustration with building increase. Great build and would love to see it in game but don't want to spend 6 hours trying different pieces for different because they won't snap.
you could have added , if budget allowed it, separation wall and catwalks inside the reactor room, wall for containment and protection, catwalk area for further engineering and security stuff, id put couple turrets there too since lets face it.... reactors scary. and you wana keep dontknowitalls out of there, also what is the most of rocket turrets you have ever placed in one base? having 4 rocket turret towers in any base with 4 turrets per tower looks freaking hilarious
I'm trying to build this. Can you do a step by step?
Look of a vid of the Spot location you can get them to stop spawning If you block off the entrances and if you close the vault doors there will be no spawn locations for them its just some places that lead out side
Great explainer and walkthrough thanks!
I lost it when I saw the barber inside of the clinic instead of the surgery chair🤦🏻♂️ cant make a hair room? Idk about you, but I wouldn’t want somebody’s hair all over my doctors office….
Bless ya man, I just stay away from it… I tried building once and drove myself mad… I shot the overseer and left
given how the vault pieces will "carry" power i really think it was a missed opportunity to have them also have indented lights so that at very least small rooms look good
actually there are indented lights in the overseer's room set... and they don't actually light up, which is irritating.
Love it, such a shame bethesda thought it was okay to just leave the vanilla lighting settings alone. I guess I can understand why, due to performance, but its so hard to make a good looking vault, that is also light up nicely. I think I would have rather have entire cell lighting like Vault 81 has.
Just use the super vault TEC reactor
Edit: super reactor produces 500 power and is way smaller
How do you build all of this and not hit your max build limit? I started building one level large room and almost maxed out
Can I ask have you done a video of how to used the blue and red hall and door components properly and how do you make the doors work?
I have not, that might be a commonwealth contractor episode worth exploring. the doors are a bit tricky, you have to snap them to existing doorways, even though they look like they won't fit, they do, but they have sort of a strobing effect because parts of the frame clip through the walls. otherwise I think they're automatic, I don't believe they require power, but I could be wrong there.
@@Theegreygaming thank you for explaining I'll have a play to see if I can get them to work, to be honest I've only had the game a few months and the dlcs less so, and thanks for your vids they're a great help, though I'm still stuck on how to correctly build and power up vault 88 as I don't quite understand how the power distribution works from the reactor to the rest of the vault without having to run cables everywhere, and not using the wire glitch lol
@@garethfoster4448 if you plan to use the reactor in the main entrance area you have to run some cabling, otherwise if you snap a new reactor to the flooring of your vault, the power will actually travel to all other connected vault sections. you may have to snap one of the wall sockets in to get the lights to work, but otherwise power distribution is automatic with the vault build set.
@@Theegreygaming oh brilliant thank you
@GreyGaming took me along time, but there are 3 Spawn Points in Vault 88, but 4 Directions attackers can come from so it appears to be 4... When Enemies spawn down near the destroyed Subway Tunnel - They can branch off into two areas of the vault!
The thing that annoys me with Vault 88 other than the lighting which is AWFUL, The Settler Pathing... They gave us all that space to build, but most of it even if you can build in there and use it is WORTHLESS as trying to get Settlers to go to anywhere other than the East Sector is IMPOSSIBLE near enough! I have got lucky a couple of times and had Settlers in other areas, but its HARD!
I know there are Mods that fix it... Not sure if there are any for PlayStation which is where I am playing Fallout 4 right now... (I do have the PC Version as well, but I am so close to Platinum!) - Yet I am achievement hunting right now so mods are not an option!
Still, I love what you have done... It makes good use of what Bethesda gave us without Mods... It just a shame Bethesda never fixed the DLC... Even if they just fixed the Pathing issues so you could get settlers to the other sectors, It would really improve the Vault-Tec DLC by 1000%!!!
Looks pretty good. One question though - why the water pumps when there's one already built in one of the caverns? It's a big awkward getting a vault generator in there but it works.
I intentionally downscaled the water production because the vault water purifier produces 100 water and drastically increases the odds that the settlement will get attacked.
@@Theegreygaming makes sense
Mechanist Lair ??
Noob ? It’s so well done
Another video I literally just watched says that you cannot expand your atrium any bigger than the ceiling but no tiles will fit up top interesting.
They couldn’t have made it more tedious to build with this add on
Can you make a Vault Tech style "Vault" above ground? A Vault Tech Base?
You can use the buildpieces anywhere you like.
My only problem is that the Room parts won't snap to the Atrium parts when it comes to the doors
Did you find a fix?
@@Royal_Knightmare yes I did
Nice I started building it up now, going to try and replicate some of your build
Sick build!!!
I built such a monstrosity in the cavern of vault 88, that the game engine just constantly bogs itself down sometimes to zero FPS. It's awesome and looks great, but the game just can't handle the size of the settlement that I have created along with all of the decorations, furniture, and settlers and what not that I have thrown in there.
At the first entrance careful with what you scrapped, if you scrapped container with vault suit inside, you game may bugged and cannot be completed normaly, or you need to kill the overseer to completed the entire quest.
can you please do a tutorial? i don’t know how to make a wide space like yours has. My vault is pretty much ghetto and claustrophobic lol
I suck at building the vault. So I just have 1 room and the cave lol. “You sleep on dirt dwellers”
too bad we didint have access to those pods where sentry bots like to chill in, have couple of those in vault= good
Suggestion for your hospital. Add some hospital beds. Also is there a store mod that you can get that has clean dining tables? I know there are mods that can fix these, I understand and respect that you don't to use mods. Also thank you for sharing this. One more quick question what did you do to the overseer.
I took the ethical approach to all the expiriments and she got mad and left. so I'm the overseer now.
@@Theegreygaming cool, mine got caught in a crossfire.

can anyone help with that i cant build any power pylons or conduits in vault 88 i have everything i need to build them but the build button is gone and i have tried fast traviling away and even closing and opening the game they still wont let me build them
How in gods name do you get some of the walls to snap?! I can't get interior walls to snap, like your doors to your market. So frustrating!
Why not use the vault tec super reactor?
I’m Having A Ruff Time With Vault 88, I Thought Of Maybe Just Building An Underground City
How did you get the ceiling tile to stock above the Overseerer's window in the atrium? I cannot figure this out! 😭
the atrium should have basic roof tiles that snap to the walls. you have to make sure you're not trying to snap the floors that have those little bracers underneath. typically for my outside walls in he atrium I use the prefabricated 2 story wall/floor/ceiling pieces, and then switch to the single walls, floors, and ceilings where I need to place doorways, or windows. that gives you some pre-staged ceiling tiles to snap to.
how did you stack the turrets ? was it with fence posts ?
Why do you need another reactor? Doesn't vault 88 already come with a reactor?
it does, but the power doesn't connect unless you run a wire down the main entrance.
@@Theegreygaming It seems really odd that the pre-built area isn't integrated into the rest of the vault requiring the player to run wires everywhere for the main entrance. Vault 88 is a fun area to work with, though daunting for less experienced builders and the settler AI seems to have a lot of trouble navigating multi-story vaults.
@@Theegreygaming This is simply not true. It does connect if you put vault tec conduits on the walls at intervals.
Love the part where you show us how to make it
what are you using to place the entrance turrets on? i cant seem to figure out how to get them placed like this or an alternative to get as many turrets as you do without just placing them all over the floor
Im gonna need a mouse and keyboard if im gonna go building this
What do you use for your ceiling in this build and how do you get it to snap into place above overseers window I have recreated your atrium on my vault 88 as it looks amazing but unfortunately only thing I can't figure out is the ceiling any help would be greatly appreciated
the atrium menu should have its own ceiling piece, those are the ones I used.
@@Theegreygaming I've looked through the atrium menu and only ceiling pieces I have all have 4 little dim lights on yours look like they have little air vents I'm playing on xbox does that make a difference?
@@Theegreygaming also some of your ceiling pieces are smooth with no vents or lights on
@@VikingWolf91 ahhh, I see, so those are light panels, each ceiling pad has a square light panel so you're seeing a bit of an optical illusion, those lights should be at th every end of the lights menu under electrical.
Nice very nice
How did you do the corners for your reactor room?
Dang i was hoping this was a build tutorial lol
There is a step by step build by the youtuber Wasteland Dovahkiin, it’s like 8 years old so she won’t reply but she shows how to build a vault
I'm having issues making my fault. When I'm using the Atrium build set I create a room (room 1), then if I want to add another room off of that (room 2) the otherside of the wall has the not so pretty side of the existing wall around room 1. This is because the wall pieces aren't the same face on either side. But I see in your video nothing is amiss with your vault in this respect and you have the "nice" side of the wall in rooms that border each other, how did you achieve this good sir?
start with the doorways, you have to snap them face to face, which annoys me to no end that you have to build one style of door, then snap the other style directly to the doorway you just built but unfortunately that's just how the vault tec build set was set up. they also slightly overlap so you get a bit of a optical glitch all over the place.
@@Theegreygaming thanks for the info my dude ill give that a blast when I get in from work
@@Theegreygaming tried it, you sir are a legend. Thank you
