The guy who formed Nabisco, Adolphus Green, actually betrayed his business partners who he had helped create the company that would later become Nabisco by going behind the backs of the founders of American Biscuit Company to merge with William Moore’s company and put himself in control of the newly formed Nabisco.

Fun Fact: In Japan, Nabisco products were manufactured under license by Yamazaki Baking from 1970 until 2016, when Mondelez International terminated the joint venture and opted to have Nabisco products imported from China and Indonesia. A year later, Yamazaki introduced their version of Oreo called "Noir", which is produced at the former Oreo factory in Ibaraki Prefecture. In comparison to the current Oreo, Noir has a darker cocoa taste, which is much closer to the original Oreo recipe.
the same thing happened with PepsiCo
singapore has both versions!
I remember moving to Argentina when I was 7 years old in 1988 and used to miss Oreo cookies but then Nabisco bought out Terrabusi and brought along Oreos and Chips Ahoy. I was ecstatic!!!

Company Man, your content is blessed. Have you considered covering Peloton's rise and fall? Something about the pandemic, rising competition, and other factors... This said, I thank you for your content which has helped me though these times.
peloton needs help
@@andrewgreenwood1387 I worked for a Peloton campaign, it died in around a year and a quarter of a year (15 months, 18 months tops).
Yeah I’d be interested in him covering the copyright infringement lawsuit regarding the music on their treadmill software
@@deester7914 Holy smokes... I was unaware of that one, and I spent 3-4 months in that campaign!
This is my favorite YT channel. Your research and presentation are impeccable.
It’s always really succinct. This type of video could easily be 30+ minutes but he keeps them so tight.
Having Kraft and Nabisco together does make sense--- cheese and crackers! :)
We've forgotten the crackers, gromit!
My grandpa retired from RJR around 1994. He worked as a flavorist and although you’d mostly think it was related to cigarettes, they also tested food products. Not bad for a guy without a college degree who had been luckily picked from the factory floor.
I heard one of my great aunts worked our local Nabisco plant back in the 80s I believe. My grandfather also worked for them as a line mechanic back in the 90s. I remember him coming home with his Nabisco shirt on.
There used to be a Nabisco factory nearby that closed down a few months ago. You could always smell cookies driving by it!
I live by a nestle dog food factory, wish it was a nabsico factory instead that sounds way more pleasant 😂
same but they closed it recently haha maybe the same one
man that is wild you do this today. i have been watching a show called "the food that built america" and last night I watched the episode about nabisco and how they came up with the oreo.
Been waiting for this one the longest!! Thank you & great video as always!!
Not too far from where I live in Pittsburgh, there's a small office and shopping complex called Bakery Square. It used to be a big Nabisco factory, which baked goods for the company into the late 1990s. Over 20 years later, it's sprung back to life, with Google as its largest tenant and dozens of small shops, firms, and restaurants taking up the rest. A metal placard near the Google offices describes the main building historically belonging to the National Biscuit Company.
The HBO Original film "Barbarians at the Gate" regarding the RJR Nabisco buyout in 1988 (based on the Bryan Burrough and Peter Riegert book of the same name) is a must-watch for business history fans or film enthusiast.
Happy to say I’ve just found this channel and this is my first time being part of the notification gang! Woot!
Very well then
For those who wanna know more about the leveraged buy out I absolutely recommend the book Barbarians at the Gate which goes into detail of the internal struggles at RJR Nabisco :) one of my favorite business books up there with Disney War and Conspiracy of Fools
You always drop little tidbits of info that are fun, unique, and/or interesting. Knowing the string on the animal crackers was for hanging on a Christmas tree is one of my all time favorites! I couldn't love it more! 🎄😍
My father was a delivery driver for NABISCO in New York, back in the late 50's. While waiting to be hired with New York Ciy Fire Department
I find it interesting that Oreo isn't the original....Hydrox is.
Stop spreading lies! Put respect on Oreo name.
I liked Hydrox better back in the day

There was a viral string of tweets 2 years ago where a guy figured out that Triscuit meant Electric Biscuit because people (including the Nabisco themselves) forgot what it meant.
There is a great book called Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco. It chronicles the LBO (Leveraged Buy Out) of RJR Nabisco.
I see the title card and the first thing that comes to mind: the jingle. It's definitely bigger than I know. Great video.
Na-biiiiiiis-co! *ding*
Love your videos! I learn so much new information I was not aware of. Looking forward to your next video already!!!
Fun Fact: did you know that there was a Disney short at the 1939 New York's World's Fair which is produced for Nabisco Mickey's Surprise Party? It's the only short to use Fred Moore's Mickey and Minnie's animation design
I never would have thought that's what triscuits meant. That'll definitely be my conversation starter at parties that will make me a social outcast for sure
Electric Biscuit and National Biscuit Company TIL
The story behind RJR Nabisco and its leveraged buyout is a legend on Wall Street. It really foreshadowed the rise of the private equity industry and its dominance in corporate America today - highly recommend the book (and movie) Barbarians At The Gate to anyone interested!
I remember that movie. It was great. Lots of good actors
Dominance, can we really say that? With the exception of private equity companies that ends up owning 5% of every blue chip, I see them as LBO-obsessed just buying already dying companies and just squeezing them for their last worth. Big tech and banks are the ones dominating. They're just vultures ultimately.
I was going to comment about Barbarians At the Gate! Excellent book, and it really showcases how KKR in particular became a force in the private equity world.
Can you do the rise and fall …and rise again of Hydrox? It’s gotten a cult following for being the originator of sandwich cookies.
For real?
@@spongeboobstar5488 yea. They were first, but their ads, at least for a while around when Oreo was created, was just them bitching about Oreo taking their idea, so they kinda died in popularity
why would them nasty thing be coming back Yuck
Weird, you wouldn't think crackers were something that needed to be invented. Like, they seem timeless, something that was brought over from the Old World or something.
Fr
hard tack was like a cracker that wouldn't go bad. The cracker was an invention of advancing food security
Biscuits feel luke the opposite. They feel like something new or at least more modern then a cracker, but they are older. I find it kind of funny.
Mike, can you do historical companies next like Rockefeller, Carnegie, Pierpont Morgan
I finally know why I grew up with Oreos and Chips Ahoy having a different brand name (Christie) than my U.S. friends (Nabisco)! Any other Canadians remember the ad slogan “Mr. Christie, you make good cookies”?
I remember Oreo's competition Hydrox right up into the 70s! Not sure when they disappeared. Good cookie though.
I've seen Hydrox pop up again from time to time. They don't seem to be gone, just hard to find.
Company Man in the pocket of Big Biscuit.
You're the reason I'm buying a pack today. Haven't bought them in years. You seriously need a marketing deal.
Buy Hydrox instead. Better ingredients.
I live in a town called Roanoke, Virginia and in our downtown area there is an old advertisement for Uneeda biscuit That was painted on a brick wall. Yours later a building went up which covered and preserved that painting and that building has since come down exposing the advertisement. And might I say that advertisement is now a pretty important piece of at least our local culture in fact one guy shows up at the city market every week with artwork and one is just a canvas poster of the Uneeda ad
I didn't know some of those foods were so old.
It's been decades since I've had an Oreo.
I can’t believe how long some of my favorites have been around! I had no idea they’re that old. Stuff like this is why I live this channel.
I used to pass a Nabisco bakery on my way to work. This one made cookies and the smell would drift for miles. It smelled so wonderful when I would drive by that place.

Nabisco is a company that I was aware of after 20+ years in the grocery business Mondelez's presence is everywhere in the store.
Curious if you will cover the Hydrox cookie? It was the very first chocolate with crème filling cookie to exist before Oreos and then was proclaimed to be a knock off Oreo. Might be interesting to see your insight on the history of them
Hydrox was the best tasting cookie!! Oreos suck!!
Hydrox messed up with their ads, instead of showing off the cookie itself, it was just them bitching about Oreo copying them and that they were the original. I do like the cookie though, and to my knowledge they still use basically the same recipe that they did when they were first made
They should call it something more appetizing.
@@rf159a Oreos are the best ever
hydrox sounds like a cleaning product-
Hey, Company Man. You should definitely do a Bigger Than You Know video on Berkshire Hathaway. Fun fact, they owned a TV station based in Miami, Florida under the call letters WPLG, which is an affliate of ABC (American Broadcasting Company).
You do such a phenomenal job on these videos
Grew up near a nabisco factory. You would drive by and it would smell ridiculously heavenly.
We have a Nabisco building where their products were made in Evansville Indiana that now houses apartments and an absolutely banger restaurant.
Congrats on reaching 1.5 million subs!
Triscuit, while obvious, is clever also for another reason many may not realise, for example... "tris" from "electricity", with "cuit" meaning "biscuit".... but also... "circuit", as in, electric circuit.
The feeling when a new Company Man video drops!
Always fire dude!
Once again, humbly asking for “The Rise & Fall of Bally Total Fitness” 🙏
One thing i noticed after Oreo and Chips ahoy change from nabisco into Mondelez, their quality toned down A LOT at least in my country lol. Chips ahoy cookies now taste like overcook cookies that hard, nothing chewy like before also smaller. Oreo just getting tinier and tinier, even reduced from 15 pcs into 12...
Thank you for another terrific episode!!!!
I remember a games website I played on a LOT back in the late 90s or early 2000s called NabiscoWorld. Your typical flash games of the era (mini golf is the one that I can specifically remember), all stylized in a theme park type thing based on Nabisco's various snack brands. So yes, I was generally aware of how they are one of the mostly food-based megacorps.
What I didn't realize was how old so many of those products were. I honestly thought a lot more of them were more... I don't know, modern.
You really had to upload right after I finished eating pizza
Do you ever think about creating longer videos? It seems that you aim for the ~10+ minutes mark but I would love to watch longer ones!
Masonville, (now Brookland) Maryland - also now Rockefeller created oil fields was first known as "Cracker Town" for the Founder of the famous cake and cracker company on President Street. His company used wooded cracker crates
The only other place I've heard "Uneeda Biscuit" is the opening of "The Music Man"
I have been waiting for you to do a vid on Nabisco. I use to pass the Philly plant when I went to tech school. It smelled so good.
Just a compliment here. Love your content - well written, entertaining, informative. Keep up the good work!
I kind of miss hydrox. My dad was heartbroken when they went down. Oreos are good but I can't eat the regular Oreos without thinking of him.
You can find them at Cracker Barrels now, in the general store part!
@@droojohnson I don't live near a cracker barrel store.

Yep I was a military rep. for Kraft from 1999 to the merger with Heinz in 2016. Seen a lot of those changes
great video man
Great video as always! The Oreo Vs Hydrox is very interesting. I had seen a video by food theory that dove further into the topic.
Nabisco actually stole the oreo from a smaller company called Hydrox and pushed them out of business because they weren't large enough to compete.
Nobody cares boomer!
This is a good example of how consolidation in the food industry has happened and how they get away with raising prices with little fear of competition
Raising prices and deteriorating quality. With little to no competition and the ability to buy up whoever gives them a run for the money. Dangerous and sad and ultimately hurts consumers.
A little known fact is that RJR Nabisco bought a chain of bagel bakery and restaurants called Skolnik’s. They were based in Chicago but had a significant presence in Philadelphia. I used to work for them there. RJR Nabisco expanded them into Maryland, NJ, and Texas which at the time, hadn’t caught on to the bagel’s popularity. The result was the Texas location closing after a year and RJR selling off Skolnik’s.
I remember passing by a Nabisco plant while driving along Route 1 to and from work.
😞 This makes me sad. I hate these huge corporations gobbling up everything and spitting out what they don’t want, destroying good small businesses.
Please do a video on Hot Topic. I’m curious how successful they are with the decline of Goth/Emo/Scene subcultures
Great video! It's currently the 100th year of the HARIBO company- the one with the gummy bears- and it'd be neat to see a video about them. I'm sure they're an interesting company! Thank you for producing such great content!
For 1912 you said 2012 lol love the vids man

May I suggest one video about the Apple Store and the man behind it (Ron Johnson), he’s all over the news now...
When I was in elementary school in the early 90’s(Toluca Lake Elementary School), from kindergarten to 5th grade, my bestfriend was a nice, genuine kid named Justin(I wish I could remember his last name) & I remember that I went to his 7th bday pool party.
It was a Hawaiian Luau themed party on Camarillo St in NOHO818, i remember that ever cookie there at his party, toys, decorations everything was Nabisco.
I remember that I was told by my mom, that Justin’s mom had told my mom[my mom & Justin’s mom were really great friends, their friendship organically happened much like Justin & I’s friendship in kindergarten all the way up until 5th grade when we graduated & I never saw him again, he moved,Justin’s mom trusted me since kindergarten to update her on Justin’s progress in class] that Justin’s grandfather is NABiSCO.
I said ok, unfazed by the info my mom had just given me [I grew up in North Hollywood818 & I met & saw a lot of celebrities, so I wasn’t fazed by the info until after the fact.]
(I loved Nabisco products as a kid)
Then I proceeded to go swim, even though I couldn’t swim.
I was drowning in his pool & I remember his Uncle dove into the pool with his clothes on & rescued me, I remember he told me(after I gathered myself) “Dude you didn’t let your head go underwater, you kept kicking your feet to reach the top surface, I saw your legs(underwater) when I jumped in & DUDE! your going to be a GREAT swimmer one day(I took swimming lessons that next summer & I’ve been a good swimmer ever since the age of 8yrs old.)
Long story short, I never befriended Justin because of who he was related to, heck, he never told me until years later after I had already knew & I still was in WOW when he told me, Justin was a really good friend of mine & I pray all is well with him & his family
I started at Nabisco in 1985 been there ever since. Seen a lot of changes. Wish I could say it was for the best but it wasn’t. The Nabisco that I started for was actually a really good company and family oriented. Unfortunately times changed. Wish it was the Nabisco that I started working for.
alot of people don't know this but Company Man is Behind The Meme
I didn't even know that!
This one was really fascinating.

I find it amazing they have zero debt, stock always on the rise and they’re executives only make about 1-2 million per year which is insane compared to other like competitors where their executives are making 10’s of millions
They also owned Canadian-based Christie Brown Company. OREO is sold under the Christie name in Canada.
This is one of the reasons I love this channel. I learn something new every time, even though I've been eating this brand for decades. Nasbisco will always be childhood memories and nostalgia for generations.
The arrow in the thumbnail was very helpful.
Chips Ahoy! is probably my favorite product of theirs. I think they taste better than Oreos.
Wow! Living in canada, i never realized it was called Nabisco in the USA! only ever saw christie. blew my mind
I got an ad for Oreos while watching this
Unfortunately, Chips Ahoy! was discontinued in Japan. I really love Chips Ahoy! and Mondelez should sell them in Japan again.
Shredded Wheat, the big biscuit ones, they're overlooked. Now I buy the little bran ones, more fiber, but I buy the big ones once in awhile. We had Hydrox one time when I was a kid. I didn't get it, I didn't get the name, but they were the original. Now all the choices with the banana creme centers or cinnamon double stuff, I don't get that either. Well, I do, it all steers you toward the flagship product.
I would really like to see a Rise and Fall of Sizzler Family Steak House! They grew up fast and had many locations and then just died off relatively fast. What happened? They used to promote cheap and great steak and shrimp plates.
That would be great to see. I worked at a Sizzler throughout the 1970s
Finally, I feel like it's been weeks since the last interesting episode!!
When did the term 'biscuit' stop being commonly used in the consumer markets in the USA? It is a key part of many of these earlier brands and companies, yet now is only used in most of the rest of the English speaking world.
I am aware it is used to mean dry cakes eaten with fatty breakfasts in the south, but that does not seem to be similar to any of the products discussed here.
Stopped being used around the time of the invention of the biscuit that you're talking about
English also call cookies ' digestives'
Now ain't that appetizing?🤪 Yummy!
Having worked in retail/grocery for a couple of decades, I was very aware of Nabisco's share of the market, huge. Thanks for the timeline, very interesting ✌️
American Bisect (which became a part of Nabisco) made made a biscuit for US troops during the civil War. It was referred to as Hard Tack.
I'm thankful to hydrox for creating the oreo.
