A Hornby LBSC Thomas | 75 Years of The Railway Series

- For the 75th anniversary of the Railway Series, I decided to create a Hornby LBSC Thomas! I also show you how you can make your own Thomas faces, though don't allow kids to do this without your assistance, as the tools and materials could be dangerous!

This is great idea. I was like "How did I miss this?" lol! A lot easier looking than I expected
Until you got to the hard part
haha thank you! Yeah it's a nice way to pass a few hours, and the end product isn't too bad! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Gosh... I can’t believe it’s been 75 years! Time sure does fly! I have this little tank engine to thank for getting me into this wonderful hobby!
Yeah it's crazy isn't it - lovely to hear that! :D

THE 75TH ANAVERSERY OF THOMAS AND FRIENDS BRINGS JOY TO MY HEART AND BRAIN **^**
Wow and all I remember is the old tv series when it was just a narrator and not 22 series thinking that makes me seem old but I’m not even 20 🤨
@@jonathancruz562
Still it brings me joy
Anyone remember the OLD live sad story of Henry from like the 1950s or something I'm not old I found out
Very glad to hear that - thank you! :D
@@SamsTrains **^** did you reply to me?
The black faced one actually looks really cool. It's like the face is actually part of the engine, and not something that's just stuck on.
Just wanna remind the viewers watching this to be careful when removing smoke box doors on Hornby and Bachmann locos. I remember the face on my Hornby Gordon was rather stubborn, but I continued to press harder because I wanted to swap the face... The face did come off, but so did half of the smoke box. It was a pretty big shock, and it wasn't pretty. I glued it all back together, sanded, and painted it and it all looks fine again, but just a reminder to be very careful with these sort of old delicate models. Some of the Hornby Thomas loco (from my experience, depends on the era) have stronger glue used on the faces, as they were advertised as "toys".
Ooh dear that's not good - yes you should never apply much force to the doors! xD
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
oh dear
~ duck in all thomas episodes
Congratulations you played yourself
@@JennyQT congrats you just bullied this guy
It’s best for you to make your own
I can’t believe it’s been 75 years since the first Thomas the Tank Engine book was published
74*. Thomas wasnt featured until the second book
@Channing Huang The first book of TRS, The Three Railway Engines only had Edward, Henry and Gordon. Thomas was featured in the second book, Thomas the Tank Engine.
I know - it's crazy isn't it?!
😮really.........weird
2:46
Everyone: “Focuses on Thomas.”
Me: “Oh no, it’s Underground Ernie.”
haha!!! ;D
I saw that too!
@@terrier_productions Same
Me: "oh no the hose fell"
It's Circle you have to worry about not Ernie himself.
Well Sam. Now all we need is an LNER Gordon, a GWR Percy, an LMS Henry, well, you get the idea.
Good idea, although we already have an LNER Gordon - the Flying Scotsman (otherwise known as Jock).
And Old-shape Henry!
haha absolutely - I'd love to see those! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Nice video Sam 👍
Happy 75th anniversary Thomas & Friends!
haha!! Thanks a lot mate, appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah, thomas wearing blackface is pretty scarry
The Hornsby E2 was my first ever loco, part of a set given to me for my sixth Christmas. I had begged for month and was so excited, but remember hardly being able to get near it for days because of various uncles, cousins etc all wanting a go.
Ooh fantastic - that must have been super exciting!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
and though I still live with my parents, I have a part-time job, and have a good sized ho scale layout in the basement with a 16 loco roundhouse, shunting yard, hump yard (basically a shunting yard that runs on gravity) a military base, dockyard, forest w/ logging camp, town with lighted buildings, farm, and fairground with a z scale train as a little train for the kids to ride. all my switches and turntable are motorized, and I have automated railroad crossings to, as well as an elevated monorail system! what do you think of that sam?
That's great to hear - that sounds amazing indeed!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Impressive, most impressive.
Thank you for producing this 75th Anniversary video of The Railway Series, Sam.
No problem mate! :D
At first I didn’t see the “Hornby” in the title and I thought you somehow got the Bachmann version already.
Hi, nice to see you.
Wouldn’t surprise me to be honest
Ooh I wish, haha! ;D
Same
Enjoyed the video it’s my 62nd birthday on the 20th may so I can celebrate with Tomas as I have one that was given to me on my 50th birthday by my late husband I’m in the process of painting my model railway room the baseboards are now ready to be laid just waiting for my walls to dry look forward to your next video as always ....:0) .... Chris
Great to hear that Chris, hope you have a good birthday!!
Thanks for watching - Sam
Sam: *unboxes Underground Ernie*
Sam, a week later: "Here's how to remove Thomas's face and attach it to another loco. If you don't want to do that, you can buy a spare face from Ebay or make a mold"
...You doing okay there?
haha maybe the lockdown's getting to me?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains BURN LE CATIPILLER WITH CRUNU
I actually like your "silver surfer" and "smokebox-like" faces. The former is reminiscent of the illustrations from the books rather than the television show (where the faces were slightly darker), and the smokebox style one makes him look like various "Other Railway" locomotives, such as the one seen in the illustration in the Foreward for "Stepney the Bluebell Engine" - assuming you have the "complete collection" book, anyway.
Thank you!! Yes I thought that actually - a darker grey would look pretty good I think!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
11:58 He looks straight outta the Railway Series!
haha thank you!
Awesome idea! It's neat that the Thomas fit perfectly on the LBSC E2.
Now we just wait for the Bachman version to finally release
Also you paired the little man from the underground Ernie set with the water tower handy👌
Yeah absolutely! haha - I thought I'd put his height to good use! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
"Little did he know, thomas was actually black and red"
HAPPY THOMAS DAY SAM!!

@@thewaffleswizerd hello
Thanks very much mate - glad you thought so! :D

11:46 - Sam going for that 1950's Looney Toons look
haha yeah!! ;D
Using silicone caulk works great too, I use them to make new trucks for my diesels that are missing them
Great idea! I'll have to try that!! :D
@@SamsTrains Make sure to use Vaseline or something like that to keep the silicone sticking to the parts and it's self. Use dish soap in water to make the silicone harden faster. I don't have an exact recipe, and needs a little trial and error, but you can reuse these molds as many times as you like.
And for the question you asked for Thomas' face, I cut it of with a knife (I had 2 Thomas')
Ooh be careful mate!! :O
I remember when I was little, seeing an episode about LBSC Thomas on UA-cam!
Ooh awesome! They are cool! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thank goodness this hasn't marked for kids!
Nope - too many dangerous tools/methods in this one! :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I'd really like to start railway modeling when this blows over. Any tips for beginners like me?
The first face Is the most accurate out of the bunch because the eyes are wonky just like in the classic series. xD
haha were they really?!?! :O
@@SamsTrains yes, they were!
2:38 this place looks like a shot from the old intro from Thomas 😁
Oh yeah it does
haha thank you!! :D
Oh, that’s how they make the faces of Thomas and his friends.
haha they probably do it a bit more professionally than this! ;D

The way you make the faces is the same way they made it in the show (the casting part)
Aww, I love crusty Thomas!
haha thank you!! :D
2:54 I think it looks better without that hose on the end. Maybe you should make a short one to clear the steam locos that have stopped there. I'm glad Ernie found a home on your railway
11:47 I've had that idea myself, but I did it on a 3D model and not an actual toy. I figured if Annie, Clarabel, the trucks, Daisy, and other diesel engines and Railway Series characters had body-colored faces, why not try it with the steam engines? I then found out that it could be slightly offensive to some people lol
haha yeah maybe it does actually! And very cool idea - I don't have time for anyone who finds that offensive - it's a locomotive with a face, nobody can relate to that! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
For a second i thought that hornby was making thomas models again
Ooh if only! :(
Thx for the update
No problem! :D
Sam'sTrains I’m gonna try this at home my self by the way you the best I have bin watching you for years

Thanks so much mate!! :D
Certainly less terrifying than that Underground Ernie set....
Anyway, I was a big fan of Thomas the Tank Engine growing up and continue to be interested in railways to this day, somewhat strange to think it's been 75 years!
haha I agree Tom! Glad to hear that mate!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The original model that Wilbert Awdry made for Christopher awdry resembles a J50 tank engine
Unfortunately all most people know is that damned Britt Allcroft TV series. The original books and illustrations are way better.
@@robinforrest7680 I agree as much as I like the TV series I wish that the models were a little bit more close to their illustrations preferably Peter and Gunvor Edwards
@@Sp1deyJay It's your opinion and I my self dont agree, the models in my opinion are PERFECT
When I make Thomas great again, BoCo will not only return, he will visit Barry Scrapyard and save a J50 named Joshua.
@@АндрійкоШпакович That's great I love to hear other's opinions I love the models too mostly the skarloey railway engines they are much better than the CGI models in Season 23 and 24

seeing the "dark faced" thomas reminded me of a show broacast in the early sixties (may be some of your older viewers might remember) called the b&w minstrell show, take away todays obsession for political correction it was , like your show, hugely entertaining in a very positive way. Thanks for the modeling tips
Ooh interesting!! I'll have to look that up! ;D

Yup excellent sing along with some quite good comedians . BBC dropped it like a hot potato when it became non PC
That looks good with the face! What you need is to find the E2 but with an extended side tank so it will look more thomas
I like the way there is a sad face on Lego brick
I know - they don't like being used for that purpose :(
Wow... This is probably the best model train idea to try while we're all stuck in quarantine I've seen yet.
haha thank you! Hope it works well for you! :D

I have heard that you can also create the face out of blue-tack and then paint the face on before you can stick it onto the smokebox of your loco. I used to do that all the time when I was little.
Very funny experiments you’ve done on Thomas’ face.. First a Thomas face that looks like he is having a stroke, then a silver surfer Thomas, then the hilarious and unintentially controversial blackface Thomas and them the far less controversial Pinocchio Thomas! Ha ha! Definitely worth celebrating 75 years of the Railway Series.

Sam back in 19 hundred and frozen to death my father took me to the model railway exhibition in central hall London. We spent ages talking to a wonderful old gent who was operating a layout. I was about nine or ten. He said to me would you like a go I of course said yes. The gent was Rev. Wilbert Audrey the layout was Sodor! They'll have to look at the series in all of its forms including the TV adaptations and inspired spin-offs like Chuggington and Underground Eernie. Huge influence over multiple cultures.
