- Bad Weather Mountain Camping in the MSR Access 1 Tent | Lake District National Park
In this video, I head up into the mountains of the Lake District National Park for a wild camp in the MSR "Access 1" tent. I was also very excited to be testing the "Melee" jacket by Thrudark. The MWIS forecast gave winds of 40 - 50 mph so I knew it would be a great test for this tent, which is sold as being 4 season. We headed up to our chosen pitch site, only to find it was not suitable due to water levels, meaning we could not pitch four tents. We headed back down a rocky scree path to an idyllic tarn, flanked by majestic and dramatic peaks as low level cloud rolled in.
The tent performed well and I attached additional guy lines to each and every guy out loop. I found the structure to be stable in the wind and as I've said on previous videos; the head room and almost vertical walls in this tent provide massive space for the small footprint.
The craft beers flowed and breaks in the cloud afforded stunning views of starts and distant constellations. The winds forecast did not materialise, or we found some great shelter - the next morning, the tent was hit by considerable gusts but held firm throughout.
A great camp with a great bunch of people and more fantastic memories made in our great outdoors.
Thank you for watching and always leave no trace, Chris

The walk of death up that winding Road to dubs hut absolutely destroyed me ....class chris all the best mate 👍 👌
It's a bit of a relentless slog! ATB pal!
A grand day out, with good mates, and in the Lake District = perfection 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Cheers, no better place to relax and enjoy a beer with some mates
Great 'camp spot'. Views on the hike and from your tent were gorgeous.
Thanks mate, a lovely area
Can't beat wrestling some waterproofs in a tent Chris - you looked pretty adept TBH, there's usually a lot of swearing whenever I have to get togged up in a tent!
Haha, yes it pays to be flexible! Thanks for watching mate!
I have been in Dubs Hut many times but it is always empty but many be different on an evening. Looked a real spacious pitch and one thing for sure you were not going to lose your tent in the dark. Fair play it looked roomy inside, despite the tent gymnastics and solid in that wind too. Cheers Alan
Footprint is tiny and belies the usable space - thanks for watching 👍
A tad snug in the tent but it did its job, great camp out with good palls.
P.s snow in Staffordshire from Wed late eve thru to sat 😀 eeek how exciting! Hooe you will be able to get a outings of any kind in it 👍.
Looked like a nice camp 👍
Thanks pal - I'll be heading up for some solitude in the Soulo (Solo 😁) when next free time allows. No music, just ambient sounds (and hopefully), views - ATB 👍
Nice one Chris
Stunning spot looked an Awesome camp oh and the beers 🍻🍻 👌👍
Cheers G
Cheers Graham - good fun!

Always great music selection to match the mood. Keep it up mate!
Cheers 🏕️
Hi Chris wow! Just stunning views. Nice jacket too. I can't wait to see the Lakes again. Very atmospheric. For someone that can't climb mountains it was stunning to see. Looking forward to your next adventure. Enjoy the rest of the week 😊👍
Glad you liked it Cath - always nice to be in the mountains and escaping the madness of life. ATB, Chris
@@MCMOutdoors very true Chris. ATB 😊👍
Great spot. Nice to watch.
Thanks Stu 🏕️
Spot on Chris, captured the atmosphere perfectly on this video pal. We had great windy but thankfully dry weather Saturday which is always a bonus isn't it. Least we all managed to hang out Saturday night man. Its always a pleasure to go out on a camp with you pal, cheers for the invite 👍
Cheers man. Top camp out.
Looks like a top camp. New mic sounds good 👍
Thanks for watching
I think that brewery does tours and also has a shop , it’s only up the road from me ,
Great video as per usual Chris. Looks like you all had a blast 🤙🏕️
Cheers Lee
Nice to be out again Chris?
Looks a cracking camp spot there!
Take care mate,
Adge
Great spot nestled in the mountains 🏕️
👋🏻
Seen all 3 versions it’s great they’re different in a good way. It’s like 3 for the price of 1. A treble feature 😂😂
Looked a great night. Good lads. Good beers good banter. That tent looked good too. Oh and I love the jacket. Are you reviewing it separately?! Be interesting to see the features I’d have to save up but if it’s good I’d Consider getting one. Thanks for the video mate. Take care.
Separate review incoming soon. I've so far tried in cold, wind, wet and one last hike in it this weekend before I can honestly give my views. Atb
Chris, your tent gymnastics are different to how I remember them in my youth🤣 Top film on a top mountain. Yeah I know it's a hill, but not imo, definitely a mountain.
Definitely in the mountains. Thanks for watching 🏕️
Congrats on a splendid video, very atmospheric Chris. Love that Access 1. Also nice to see Wardle in your company. Very impressed with your music choice mate, Franz Gordon you have outstanding taste, thank you for sharing throughly enjoyed that mate 👍
Thank you kindly!
I never knew the Lakes had Bothy's 🥰 I've been lucky enough to stay in a fair few in bonny Scotland. Loving all the little nuggets of info in your videos mate.
Many of them dotted round - plus Snowdonia and the Peaks 🏕️
I had no idea, I'll have to do some research. 🤙@@MCMOutdoors
Cracking camp Chris. Shame the original pitch was a bit boggy, it looked nice up there, but you ended up in a great location. It looked perfect. The MSR tent looks pretty good mate 👌
Yes, was a no go mate. Would have been okay solo, or maybe 2 at a stretch - plan B was lovely too. Thanks for watching Joe
Great camp thank you for sharing buddy, keep up the top work.
Cheers Damon!
Grate place to camp mate. really enjoyed that video , thanks for sharing.
No prob, thank you for watching
Cracking night that. All round great trip. No stress no worries. Escaped from it all. I really enjoyed it. Great seeing you and Ant again. Hopefully not as long for the next one.
Send gallop
Top laugh as always! Brutal editing required 🤣 likewise mate and definitely 👍 send Nammatj 2GT

🏕️
Good video, Chris. Looked like a chilly windy one. Glad to see Ant and Andy joined you for the adventure. Cheers, and have a good week.
Cheers, you too 👍
Nice video 👍
Thanks 👍
Good to see you’re hydrating in the correct fashion !!! 😂🎉
A few craft cans were sunk on this one!
Top vid. I was expecting freezing when ant said where he was going. Hope you had a top day.
Good fun mate. I was hoping for some more severe weather - the mwis was a bit inaccurate for this one
Lovely video many thanks 🙏 I once stayed in Mosedale cottage in the mid 1980s, before it got refurbished when I was there the ceiling was coming down, try and stay the night in the haunted room if you are anywhere near there 👻😂😂
Sounds scary! I will check that out. Thanks for watching 🏕️
Is this tent worth the money? I have the elixr2 and considering the 2man, i dont mind paying a little more if its worth it, i have the Helm1 i like the idea its outer first,my mind is goofed with it all, keep up with the great vids!
Totally subjective - in my view and having used both, this is a more capable tent than the Elixir. If you want to push your camping in terms of the weather - then it's one to consider. The space in this, for the tiny footprint is immense and it can also hold its own in some reasonable winds. I'd say 35 / 40 max - a great shelter
I’m thinking of buying an Access 1 soon Chris. Overall a good tent in your experience? ATB mate - Simon
Yes mate, space for the small footprint is immense due to the almost vertical walls. Definitely recommend and really enjoy mine.
Nice vid mate how you find that tent I borrowed one see what it was like had massive condensation there was no proper vents😊
Hi Dave - did you borrow a newer model? There a proper vents on both the head and feet ends of the tent. There is also a proper vent on the inner door. In addition, you can always unzip the inner when it's cold and physics mean condensation is an inevitable outcome, I do that on my Soulo mate. Tent is superb, only thing I don't like is the inner first pitch. ATB 👍
@@MCMOutdoors I believe I had the older model mate which had no vents 👍
Those gloves Chris, Decathlon?
No, got them online - they're "Ergo Grip Active" by Hestra and also Kebnakaise mittens, also by Hestra.
@@MCMOutdoors Thanks 🍻
@infour44 👌
Hey mate. Great content as ever. Fancy this tent. Did you much much in the way of the dreaded condensation? Just asking as I thought of taking it on the Cape Wrath. I've read different reports about the ventilation. Any help appreciated. Thanks. 👍
There was genuinely zero condensation in it the next morning. There's a bit more venting / mesh on this version. I had the vents fully open and was pitched end into the wind, so no doubt that helped.
@MCMOutdoors Cheers mate. Appreciate your quick response. I think I'll pull the trigger and see how it goes. Safe trails. Keep up the good work. 👍
I don't see a follow-up review for your Sierra Meteor 2 tent that got rained on?
Have a closer look then
Tiring work just watching
🤣
Looked a good camp mate. Perfect location and love the tent ⛺️
Shame about the plan B but it wasn't to be - ATB
@@MCMOutdoors plenty more opportunities I'm sure
