Many of my peers had labeled you guys into the Pop punk category, and this show made a lot of people aware of how much you guys can shred and play your instruments with the best of them.

What I find funny while watching this video is that Stevo is talking about Metallica as, like, the band that started it all for him. And here I am, 23 years later, nodding to the fact that Stevo and Sum 41 was the band that started it all for me. THIS performance was even the thing that introduced me to Metallica, via Sum 41. The circle of life is beautiful sometimes.
Dude, you’ve got this channel’s formula down to a T. Time stamps and everything. Might not seem like much but you’d be suprised how many big channels can’t even do that. I’m loving all the stories you’re sharing. I’ve always been blown away by this performance. I remember downloading it off of limewire circa ‘04, ‘05 along with like every other sum performance. Limewire was relevant for maybe a year but I attribute that virus ridden site to a big reason why I fell in love with the band. I showed my gf this performance a couple days before you put this out. Thank you. Keep slappin 32. Also I feel like Lars gets hated on and I’ve always been like how? He’s the drummer of arguabley the biggest band of all time. Haters gonna hate haha great vid man. In some future video you will need to give us your favorite "remix-bridge" of No Brains - that is one of the best songs ever written, especially with the bridge variations. My favorite would be the one from the Tokio live DVD "Sake Bombs and Happy Endings", but the version on "Go Chuck Yourself" is pretty sick as well.
That's why Sum 41 was always a step above. You guys were fun and wrote great catchy punk tunes but also have serious chops and can throw down metal with the best! 🤘

I remember both of these shows! The first with Run DMC was just hilarious. The Metallica was insanely epic! You didn’t even use a double bass pedal from what I recall - sounded true to the original with little stylistic flairs that were still Sum 41. You totally honored those guys. I would have totally shit AND peed in my pants up on that stage from pure excitement! I miss MTV, VH1, and Fuse being the way it was during the 90’s and 00’s. Now it’s mostly crap reality TV. They need to bring back the music vids and live shows like this! Steveo, I’d love to hear more about how you went from your apparently strict mom making you toss your Metallica shirt to ending up in a Punk band where you were totally off the rails - did that create a lot of trouble with your family, or did they end up supporting you? On that note, might be cool to share your experiences with the younger generation who might want to pursue music. Lots of kids end up doing stupid shit like running away to join a band, while others end up fighting a lot at home. How do you get your family on board with this sort of thing, and what do you do if you can’t get the ‘rents to let you pursue being in a band? And are there things kids today should be doing to make good decisions and not get taken advantage of by the industry and shitty people out there? I just worry about the teens of today when their parents don’t see eye to eye and then they get taken advantage of by other adults because they’re kids who may not know better. Might be helpful to explore that topic. Tell these teens what you feel you did right and what you wish you might have done differently. But for real, I mostly just wanna know how you went from mom making your toss that shirt to effing Steveo32 in Sum 41, lol. 😂😂😂
i remember this being THE video that got me into sum 41 after years of my at-the-time girlfriend trying to convince me you guys were actually good funny enough, as much as i like metallica, i've never been into them as much as i am into sum 41
@@stevo32drums oh no don't get me wrong i do like metallica a lot too! i just for some reason tend to like artists influenced by metallica more than metallica themselves hah
My brother and I talk about this performance often because it's actually the first time I had heard Master of Puppets and For Whom the Bell Tolls, as well as Limp Bizkit's take on Sanitarium. I was 12 years old. I was stoked on those versions and became a Metallica fan sort of through this ICON special.
There is a video on UA-cam of you guys covering Master of Puppets in its entirety. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to anyone who wants to see the definition of tightness! I was (and still am) blown away by how amazingly great you guys sound. 🤯
I vividly remember sitting in the living room in my apartment watching this. I was 20 at the time. Recorded it on VHS and re-watched it so many times. Great memories from that time.
I have watched this performance at least one hundred times. So badass. Love the videos. Glad to see you playing again. You've always had an amazing groove.
Finally got to see Sum 41 live in Dublin last week, still incredible and bring the energy. Love that you're doing the channel at this stage in life Steve, you and the guys deserve the rest. How often do you keep in touch with the rest of the band these days?
was "E CA Hi" just from you switching those letters around on the marquee or does it have any other meaning... it's such a deep cut reference I feel like I gotta be missing more lol
Nah its literally just from the letters on the marquis ... but for years after I left the band I would get messages that said only that so for whatever reason, the most ridiculous nonsensical joke had legs haha
I remember watching this when it first aired and thought what other punk band could pull this off? Whole band sounded great, but as I’ve said before, your drumming and Dave’s mastery on guitar is what always set you guys apart. And this performance illustrates that perfectly. I’m sure you have something coming, but we gotta see a breakdown of the Pain for Pleasure tracks!
You guys had my favourite performance of that whole Icon show. Was super cool to hear you play through it again all these years later! Keep the videos coming, Steve!
I must admit, when i first heard Sum 41 I wasn't immediately a fan. But, i think it was 2001 at the Warped tour in Toronto Skydome, you guys opened for Pennywise and in my opinion absolutely killed it live. I have been a fan ever since. One of my favorite live performances of any band was this medley at the MTV Icons performance, unbelievable.
You and Sum 41 were the reason I started playing drums. I remember like it was yesterday. I hopped on my bike and rode into the city just to buy All Killer No Filler. Went to see them last year in Rijeka and going again this year in Bologna. Stay well and thanks for all the memories.
I felt the adrenaline you guys had during this performance watching it live on my little box tv that night! All of my friends were talking about it for weeks after it happened and always said sum41 had the best performance of all the acts
I remember watching this on tv with my mom and this was when she realized how talented you guys were and started coming to Sum 41 concerts with me after that 😂 Her fave bands growing up were Metallica and Motley Crue. She still rocks old school Sum all the time ❤
I love this format. I never made it, but I do still play, and it's just very cool to see someone like you, who is now out of the scene, just loves to play and enjoy music like me. Anyway, thanks for the music bro.
Yout channel is such a gold mine for someone like me who spent my teens consuming everything about Sum 41 on the internet. I thought I knew everything about Sum but all these anecdotes that you are sharing are so much fun to take part of. I'm 28 now btw 😅
As a fan who got into your music in 2004 it’s great to see these older tidbits of the band’s history, what an amazing performance. Very cool video Steveo thank you
This performance was legendary, I recorded it to VHS when it aired and watched it a million times. Dave melted faces with that solo. I played this medley on bass so many times. E-Ca-hi Stevo!
I'm 27 years old and I've been listening to the Sums since the very begining thanks to my older brother. Watching the "Introduction to Destruction" and "Live in Tokyo" dvds every months - when it was not Malcolm in the middle - with my brother and laughing together watching all the bloopers, such great memories. I'm so glad to see you back on drums Stevo and watching you laughing and commenting your history give me chills and remind me of the beauty of my childhood. In november, I will see Sum 41 live for the very last time in France (and for the first time with my brother!) and I can't wait. Thank you Stevo and keep up the great work !
I do love that this was kinda incorporated into the brief tour Deryck did when he came back to music. However, this right here is why the special stayed on my dvr for years until I gave up the dvr.
Stevo, as a long term Sum fan, just want to say you're channel is very much appreciated. Excellent work going on, keep up the great work! Peace out from Ian in the UK 😎
Stevo, you are the best drummer in the world who can play all the songs! When will you finally hire me to perform Noots? I really want you to perform this track❤🔥
One of my favorite things about you guys, especially back then was completely shocking my friends who were metalheads and dropping Sum 41. Perfect mixture of criminally underrated and widely respected. Keep it up, Steve. So glad to see you back!
I was 13 when this aired and watched MTVicon mainly for Limp Bizkit and Sum41. The next day i drove to the record store and bought Metallicas Black Album and became a huge fan. So you guys basically introduced me to Metallica. A year later you guys released Chuck and i always wondered how much Metallica and especially the MTVicon performance inspired you for the sound of Chuck. For me, Chuck was a amazing mixture of the sounds of Sum41 and Metallica and this album blowed me away. Still does to this day.
I think the thing I like most about these videos is his passion and how much fun he is having. Like tons of musicians start channels but how many truly show their love for music?

i remember this being THE video that got me into sum 41 after years of my at-the-time girlfriend trying to convince me you guys were actually good
funny enough, as much as i like metallica, i've never been into them as much as i am into sum 41
She sounds like a decent gal! And hey to each his own... I still listen to metallica all the time!
@@stevo32drums oh no don't get me wrong i do like metallica a lot too! i just for some reason tend to like artists influenced by metallica more than metallica themselves hah
I'm happy to see this performance again.
You're awsome drummer.
thanks for watching!
I remember watching this on UA-cam when UA-cam first came out, and I was blown away by how amazing you guys sounded on-stage! Holy Balls.
Nice! VHS!
I have watched this performance at least one hundred times. So badass.
Love the videos. Glad to see you playing again. You've always had an amazing groove.
Thanks for watching!
Going up against korn and limp, y’all brought it. I remember watching this live and taping it on BETAMAX so i could rewatch it. Great set.
Thanks! Wow .... Betamax! We're old! 😂
I could not agree more with you, Sum 41 was the best number of the night. Awesome content! It brings back my teenage memories. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you!
@@stevo32drums haha love it - keep crushin it bro
I remember watching this when it first aired and thought what other punk band could pull this off? Whole band sounded great, but as I’ve said before, your drumming and Dave’s mastery on guitar is what always set you guys apart. And this performance illustrates that perfectly. I’m sure you have something coming, but we gotta see a breakdown of the Pain for Pleasure tracks!
You guys had my favourite performance of that whole Icon show. Was super cool to hear you play through it again all these years later! Keep the videos coming, Steve!
Thank you! will do!
One of The Best Sum 41 performances ever! I’m so luck lucky to saw this performance live in Amsterdam in 2016! Yes they PLAYED IT AGAIN!
Awesome!
Watching you geek out over a fist bump from 20 + years ago is amazing
It's the little moments 🤘😂
Stevo is funny as hell and his videos are so entertaining. So nice to hear stories like that we the fans don't know about !
I felt the adrenaline you guys had during this performance watching it live on my little box tv that night! All of my friends were talking about it for weeks after it happened and always said sum41 had the best performance of all the acts
Thanks! Yeah it was really an amazing thing to be a part of
I remember watching this on tv with my mom and this was when she realized how talented you guys were and started coming to Sum 41 concerts with me after that 😂 Her fave bands growing up were Metallica and Motley Crue. She still rocks old school Sum all the time ❤
I remember this so well! I had a copy downloaded and burned on a blank dvd disc along with a bunch of other music videos
Nice!
I love this format. I never made it, but I do still play, and it's just very cool to see someone like you, who is now out of the scene, just loves to play and enjoy music like me. Anyway, thanks for the music bro.
Thanks man! Yeah it is fun to get back into it ...thanks internet!
Always loved this performance and always had a lil Ontario pride seeing you guys up there for this !
Durham Region Represent!
@@stevo32drums 705 for life!
This original performance was life changing for me, Stevo! I was a bigger Sum 41 fan than a Metallica fan at the time believe it or not.
Very cool video Steveo thank you
you guys definitely had the best performance from all the bands
This performance was legendary, I recorded it to VHS when it aired and watched it a million times. Dave melted faces with that solo. I played this medley on bass so many times. E-Ca-hi Stevo!
The multi-viewer screen in the background with 3 different camera angles is a very nice touch. Someone Atems 😎
I highly recommend the ATEM !!!! Game changing
Absolutely love your excitement! I got goosebumps watching you get goosebumps!
Dude that OCDP kit sounds so good. They were the best sounding and looking drums ever.
I was at that show! man that was a bucket list show for me🔥🤘🏻
So epic. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I lost it when you showed Edward Scissorhands for The Cure ☠️🤣
I am a huge fan of you guys but man was I nervous about this performance! Metal fans are a fickle bunch but you guys killed it!🤘🔥🔥🤘
I do love that this was kinda incorporated into the brief tour Deryck did when he came back to music. However, this right here is why the special stayed on my dvr for years until I gave up the dvr.
Stevo, as a long term Sum fan, just want to say you're channel is very much appreciated. Excellent work going on, keep up the great work! Peace out from Ian in the UK 😎
Watching you in a few clips perfectly sync up with your younger self was awesome!
Mission accomplished! Yes... we are huge fans and the influence is there for sure on that one
I think the thing I like most about these videos is his passion and how much fun he is having. Like tons of musicians start channels but how many truly show their love for music?
Haven't missed a single video yet, this channel is fantastic. The behind the scenes and stories are awesome - a total trip down memory lane of what we saw of Sum 41 from the outside and some real cool history.
You mentioned you *think* you still have the silver OCDP somewhere - How about a video about all the different kits you still have or don't have + how you made it into Zildjian Marketing for their ZXT Titanium box - Epic picture.
I can do a video about my current stuff for sure .. I don't remember the ZXT thing .. where did you see that? thanks!
@@stevo32drums my memory is crazy for random things like this. But here’s a copy from a Google search, it was probably just an email from them to you… haha.

@@stevo32drums just my crazy memory for random things like that - but a quick google I found an image of the box - img.audiofanzine.com/images/u/product/normal/zildjian-zxt-titanium-pro-box-set-49044.jpg
Even a video covering how things changed with endorsements over the years, and where you are now.
I’ve got a dozen ideas/questions for videos, but I’ll let someone else have a turn. :)

I remember watching this episode of Icons when I was a preteen. I had just gotten into Metallica. And funny enough, Sum 41 was one of my gateway bands that led me to discover metal music. So when I saw this live, I FREAKED. This brought back so many good memories. Thanks, Stevo!
That's cool to hear! A lot of people have told me that P4P got them into Maiden which makes me so happy
