It's a classic case of bully syndrome. He became so accustomed to the abuse and manipulation by Shido, that he wound up sabotaging the first truly healthy and honest relationships he ever had. To me, the saddest part about Akechi is imagining "what could have been" and how he could have become such an incredible force for good in the world, but due to Shido's heartlessness and cruelty, that possible future was irrevocably snatched away from him. Perhaps even worse is that there is a fan theory that I believe holds weight that would mean that Akechi actually had family left other than Shido himself....because Akechi shares the same rare blood type (AB+) with *FUTABA* meaning that there's a very real chance that Shido is also Futaba's father (and this would also explain how Shido knew so much about the Metaverse, Wakaba may have told him all about it during the brief time they were involved with each other, and it would also explain why Shido had her killed, as she knew too much for him to let her live unless she was firmly in his pocket)....and if that is the truth, it means both Akechi & Futaba had family left in each other as half-siblings (and this would also explain why Shido's underlings screwed with Futaba they way they did, as Shido would have wanted her gone too as her relation to him could have been just as harmful to his political career as Akechi's would have been had they become public knowledge)..
@@gamester512It also hurts when you consider the varying reactions other characters have towards him too during the first meetings. The Phantom Thieves, other than Joker, all immediately don't trust him because he's a detective (or in Makoto's case, because she's jealous of how much Sae trusts him). And keep ignoring him when he actually gives them context on the conspiracy. Sojiro immediately doesn't trust him because he's a detective and he works with Sae. Sae starts to treat him pretty coldly because of his age, him getting credit for their cases, or him being the "SIU Director's favorite" over her. Etcetera etcetera. So even if he didn't push people away during the events of the game, other people definitely pushed *him* away first, and that got to him ("It seems I'm unwanted no matter where I go"). It really reminds ya that it's not just Shido that's stunting Akechi's life; there's a good chance all of this is *Yaldy's* influence making sure that any time Akechi *does* reach out, his hand's slapped away so the game can keep going.
For the people who were wondering how Haru was sympathetic with Akechi, it's most likely the fact that the murders were being orchestrated by Shido and he was being forced (As evident from the phone call after his show) to commit these murders - being more vulnerable due to not having anyone else to keep him on the right path. The same scenario could've happened to Ren (Scene at start), because Haru too had been used as a pawn by HER father - she knew exactly how Akechi must've felt. This is further shown by the fact that Haru shows MORE hostility to Shido, as he was responsible for the deaths of Wakaba, Kobayakawa, Okumura and Akechi - all who were linked to a member in some way (Wakaba = Futaba's mother, Kobayakawa - Principal of Shujin, Okumura - Haru's father and Akechi - Conflicted Teenager*) I say the last part because Yusuke, Makoto and Futaba were also conflicted. Yusuke as he was raised by Madarame - In denial of criminal acts, Makoto as she was struggling with her belief of true justice and Sae's attitude towards her, and Futaba as she had her entire family blaming her for her mother's death based on a forged Suicide Note by Shido and the SIU
I have a hard time believing Akechi was forced to do anything. Akechi had all the power in his relationship with Shido, without him he would be powerless and there would be no mental shutdowns or taking out of Shido’s rivals. Akechi chose to share his power with Shido and in turn used it to murder people.
vani m he may not have been forced to but he was able to stop killing ppl or not do it to begin with. He had every right to not create the mental and psychotic breakdowns but he kept doing it to please his father.
@@dragonarcher89 That was because Shido knew exactly what "buttons" to press to get Akechi to do what he wanted. Remember, the guy had the ability to basically twist even the legal system to his own ends (him suing Joker for saving the woman when Shido falling and hurting himself was his own fault, Joker barely even touched the guy), so just imagine how much easier it would be for Shido to do the same to a teenager as mentally unstable and vulnerable as Akechi. Manipulating Akechi would have been child's play for Shido compared to him framing Joker and giving him a criminal record he didn't at all deserve.
gamester512 Is just really spilt on the situation. On One hand, Akechi was basically played with by his own father his entire life, similar to haru. Akechi didn’t have any relationships and was tossed away by most ppl. The one who tried to be friendly with, he tossed them a side. On the other hand, Akechi did kill a lot of ppl with his own hands. Of course he was ordered to but he gladly did it. He did take ppls lives just so he could feel useful to someone. I despise shido way more than Akechi but that doesn’t really excuse all the murders he committed.
Oh look, the moment where I went from "He's a jerk" to "Okay he's psycho and kinda needs a hug!!" In a nutshell anyways. Also, I low-key get where Akechi is coming from, I also have that want to be useful, but unlike him I have good friend and families to help, so I don't go down that insane rabbit hole.
Same. I completely get where he was coming from but this case was the most extreme as it can get. I think Akechi had an inferiority complex going on a bit when it came to joker. That coupled with his need for attention and wanting to be useful spelled disaster (Also love the Ibuki profile pic. She was criminally underused in danganronpa 2. Also POINTING 👉👆)
even with how much of an introvert I am, I appreciate the times I spend with that one friend or family member. That one supporter or person to fall back on can make a huge difference
I wouldn't be surprised if that WAS a fourth-wall break.. for some reason, a lot of mentally unstable video game characters do that. And it's pretty obvious he has mental issues.
We are looking at the other side of the coin. If Ren didn’t have people to rely on, didn’t have his confidants, didn’t have anyone. But that means Akechi could have been saved, had he had a friend, a peer. If we had met him sooner, he would have been saved
@@ryokiritani4187 Royal's too late. Akechi is literally death-seeking. He whole-heartedly believes that he died against his cognitive self, and wants to go back to being dead, because that's more just than being forgiven for his crimes or having reality rewritten so he never committed them.
@@jyousemorenoengTrue but (Spoilers) we don’t know for sure that he really is dead, especially with that post credit scene. And even if he is, that probably doesn’t mean much in a world where people can enter into someone’s mind using a magical app on their cell phone. So, you could say he was saved in the sense that there’s a least a chance he might be able to turn over a new leaf and try to become a better person.
Something I always loved about Akechi is how technically he fights you with his Shadow, not his Persona. His summoning of Loki is far more of the Shadow aesthetic instead of the persona, which Loki would easily be able to fake if he can manipulate the appearance of things. It shows a very big difference in how Igor and Yaldabaoth do things as well. Igor gives people Persona that are meant to embody the personal freedom someone has. The ability to be their true self without worry. Meanwhile, Yaldabaoth gave Akechi the ability to control his Shadow as one would a Persona. His way of doing things is honestly more akin to the Devil Survivor/Shin Megami Tensei rather than persona. Honestly the most terrifying part of Akechi's abilities, or rather his personality is that he doesn't lose control of Loki after making himself go psychotic, nor does he at any point have any problems playing the role of Crow with Robin Hood. So he's just so mentally strong even in an erratic mental state that should honestly keep him from being able to control his Shadow so well instead of it taking full and absolute control over him like it did with all the previous palace rulers whose desires grew waaaay too out of control, much like Akechi's almost certainly did. And he's honestly become so broken that he really is able to embody what is honestly two polar opposite mindsets, which is clearly unhealthy. But, those are just my takes.
Shadows and personas are fundamentally the same thing: facets of human will. The shadows in the dungeons said it best, that they come from the sea of human consciousness. The only difference they have with palace rulers is that rulers are a more complete will that defies its surroundings and does whatever they want. A persona is a shadow that is controlled and becomes an expression of power you put on towards outside threats. If the attacks can be dark (MUDO), then you can sure bet that the personas themselves can be evil as shit.
@@ualnomis99 I know. It's just that no one ever seems to comment on how Loki seems much more akin to what Akechi's Shadow would be, and how the game presents it makes it seem like Akechi doesn't use an actual Persona, but instead tamed his Shadow, as opposed to accepting it and gaining his Persona. Again, much more similar to SMT's combat style, and slightly similar to the Wild Card abilities. No one ever comments, or goes into appropriate detail on how much that says about him as a person. It kinda gets on my nerves actually. Maybe it's just me, though, I don't know. Like I said, I know the relations and what not between shadows and personas. It's just that this is the first time to my knowledge that a person's Persona and Shadow seem to be the exact same thing even though, going by the pattern shown through the rest of the series, as I know of it anyway, that shouldn't be totally possible without something terrible happening to the owner of the... Shadona? No matter. It just gets to me.
@@colt1903 I do agree with your opinion of Yaldabaoth, he can give people the ability to face their darkness but it can never be their salvation. He is born from the desire of modern society to live without facing adversity, so his style of doing things is always my way or the highway. He may have awakened both Akechi and Joker's abilities, but he used his style for Akechi's growth and imitated Igor's for Joker's. As a result, he screwed himself over. Igor takes after his master Philemon, who believes the Wild Card (and in extension humanity) can create their own salvation. Which is why the contract to the Velvet Room only asks you to bear your own responsibility (at least, that's what I believe).
@@colt1903 I see your point now. Akechi's Persona is Robin Hood. His Shadow, however, turns out to be the one and only Loki, the God of tricksters. Crow is the only time when he can feel like his true self, like a human being. Robin Hood fits him perfectly where he doesn't just fight crime to gain fame but he at some point truly wanted to help the weak and save the lives of people who can't protect themselves. Unfortunately, he's so mentally broken even his Shadow, the trickster God himself, doesn't want to cross his path and instead allowed itself to be controlled by him. The difference between a Persona and a Shadow is basically good and evil. Loki doesn't seem like a Persona, but a Shadow. Akechi basically combined both his Persona and Shadow. Even Joker has a Shadow version of himself, so it doesn't strike me as odd if it's possible to come in contact with both of them. You still have to be all kinds of messed up but also mentally stable and strong to be able to pull that off.
@@colt1903 I Mean akechi beat ten palaces on his own and was stated that the phantom thieves needed to gang up on him to win soooo akechi just a prodigy persona user and I am scared to see what would happen if he took advantage of his wild card to get a bunch of personas,he has the most potential in any persona game I ever seen
I'm gonna say my opinion about Akechi and why I like him and want him to survive in the main game. Shido left Akechi's mother when he found out she was pregnant. In other words, he disowned him before he was born to begin with. Then she committed suicide after she gave birth to him, having him being put in foster care. All the foster families rejected him, mistreating him, making him feel worthless. So once he became a detective, he felt wanted. He felt needed. Though subconsciously, he knew it was all fake. Akechi then found out about the MetaNav along with his powers, both persona and turning people psychotic) and wanted to get his revenge on Shido. Of course, he had been following up on Shido, it being easy from him being a politician, and showed him he could be useful to him. Shido then had Akechi kill all those people using this method and formed a twisted relationship with his birth father. During this time, he had no one. Til he met Joker. Joker for him was a breath of fresh air from everything (their relationship is waaaaay different in the anime to where they are closer) and appreciated him for accepting him. Though, he let his revenge get in the way of his true feelings and never actually being truly happy. He, himself, is just like the Phantom Thieves. This isn't that bullshit hero stories use for the hero to have a subplot to remind themselves that they aren't the same, this is true. Hell, he's just the same as Joker. He is a wild card user. The only difference is that, Goro Akechi grew up alone, having his only true bond with Joker. I should also say that I'm glad of the way the thieves are treating him in this moment and after the fight. They know that he is the same as them. If they had never found each other, they would've ended up like him. I love how Goro changes the cliche of every hero story, making him my favorite antihero. I wanted for him to survive for the sole purpose that the Yaldo boss fight wound have more of an impact. The two people Yaldo put together to butt heads, are going up against him. This is what I think would be good because it shows off the messages of the game, "Freedom" and "Rebellion". I don't dislike Persona 5 because they didn't do so. I think the reason why they made it like this is because they wanted to add more but had no time. How do I know this? Persona 5 Royal is good explanation. He's still there. Off topic but, I think Persona 5 would also have more impact, if Joker was a girl. No, I'm not one of THOSE persona fans. I just think that, if Persona 5 had a female protagonist, they could do what I stated and do something persona rarely uses, good old, "Power of Love", instead of, "Power of Friendship". It would be a nice change of pace. Last thing, I relate to Akechi on a personal level. I always wondered what would happen if I never met the people who accept me. I think that one of the possibilities that would happen, other than the murders, I would be as insane as him. So that's my opinion on Pancakes. Hope you like it. I'm also adding this so that you guys can have a little laugh. Akechi: Come... LOKI! Me: No wonder I couldn't fuse this bastard...
God I love how you get to see akechi slowly lose it. To the point where he literally makes himself go insane. Just listening to him the build up is incredible and then when it reaches the peak. It's all out insanity with Loki just being there behind akechi and his crow armor
Honestly, though I feel bad for Akechi, when I fought this battle personally, it was way too funny. Akechi kept using physical, bless and curse moves whilst I had Odin out the whole time. He even did this when using Loki. It was too easy. Edit: used the Odin strat again in P5R, good lord they made this game so much easier.
I asked the same question until I saw him do it at that convention. My jaw damn near hit the floor. His ability to switch from the calm akechi to that psychopathic monstrosity is unbelievable. The ability to do that is really underrated
"Why do you have things that I don't!?" Musicalgamer: "Dude, look inside yourself." "DON'T GIVE ME THAT CLICHE'D BULLSHIT!" "But all I'm made of is cliche'd bullshit!" 😆
everyone has different lines from akechi that they mention as important, but the one i always notice is "go down with me!" it implies that akechi knows he's not getting out of this alive and that his situation is hopeless, so it's less that he wants to win and then go on to fulfill his og plan so much as just drag the phantom thieves down to his level one last time before he dies. it always strikes me as pretty sad.
This is probably one of the videos i was most looking forward to, Akechi is one of my favorites from Persona 5, hoping based on the Royal trailers i hope he'll live
Im japanese and always like japanese voice acting a lot more than any translated one. Also, I always like to watch western movies or something in their original voice because I can feel an original feeling of voice acting. However, English voice acting in persona series is as fantastic as original one. That might be because they are trying hard to make it really close to the original. Especially for P5, Akechi's voice acting is next level. His blur?? and breathing of the voice is just great. Persona series might be the only one that I enjoy watching someone playing even in English.
I like the fact that they used a character from mythology who is both mischievous, and sympathetic if you look deeper into the myths. It really shows how Makoto was absolutely correct, Akechi doesn’t want to hurt them, and won’t feel better if they die. Loki was a perfect representation of how Akechi feels, and how sympathetic we tend to feel after his end. I also like that he doesn’t flow with the “POWER OF FRIENDSHIP” trope that FFP pointed out, he pretty much is immune. It’s an amazing scene, and it really shows off Robbie’s voice acting, and it feels like the role was made for him.
Akechi reveals himself going psychotic to take down the Phantom Thieves Me: Huh, so THIS is what the bad Joker fused with Batman would be like...but less bad ass and more just crazy. I will always refer to the Joker from Batman as bad Joker, while Akira as Good Joker. All hail the Good Joker!
19:54 "They went to the TV premier (June 9-10) before Madarame (June 5)" When thr game's so long that you forget when sequentially the main events happen in. It doesn't flaw the story, it's just if you think about it, you should be able to remember it. But with how many plot points in sheer numbers of important events happen within moments of each other, I can understand it would slip your mind.

It apparently reverses after the fight, since be regains his senses and even helps you get away. Maybe because he lost the fight and had no stamina? it takes a lot to keep a persona going.

Akechi: **screaming out of his lungs**

Akechi is not Okechi.
BUSTER WOLF
Fiery Tiger Gaming this^
I have a hard time believing Akechi was forced to do anything.
That coupled with his need for attention and wanting to be useful spelled disaster

We are looking at the other side of the coin. If Ren didn’t have people to rely on, didn’t have his confidants, didn’t have anyone. But that means Akechi could have been saved, had he had a friend, a peer. If we had met him sooner, he would have been saved
*Royal joins the chat*
I want to see their reactions to the creepy cognitive akechi faces
What part are you talking about?
@@ballisticboo7808 just after the Akechi fight, Shido's cognitive version of Akechi appears and has some weird faces
LOKI!
