For those who still need to know, Goemon was a famous ninja - a type of Robin Hood of Japan. The appearance of Yusuke's Goemon is styled after traditional ukiyo-e paintings, but with extra details reminiscent of modern Japanese delinquents.

To be fair that shit is one of my greatest fears. Fingernail torture is common among POWs and something that's never far from my mind.

For those unaware, this is a reference to Baudelaire's poems collection, regarded a masterpiece in the art of Poetry, Fleur du Mal/Flowers of Evil.
Baudelaire was criticizing society in his poems of how clean society wants to be and how society antagonizes and vilifies a certain group of people, like the disabled, the gamblers, the poor, the prostitutes etc. Baudelaire believed that evil itself is how we treat these people as it is the hypocrisy of society itself to vilify these people as they tend to be victims of the society we create ourselves, yet we like to act society needs to be clean. We are evil in creating these people out of our vanity towards society and treat them like less and thus, we tend to create evil itself at times. People want a clean society and yet, with every second we live, we actually do a huge part in doing the very opposite and make life miserable for people and and antagonize the same people and be condescending to them.

The Abominations are not the ones we look down upon, it's those who act all proper and clean but tend to be the most wicked. Like Madarame who sends people into poverty once no longer useful to him but likes to look down on them, when it is him who creates their situation in the first place.
"The world is filled with both beauty and vice, it is time to teach which is which"
Society pretends there tends to be beauty only and the wicked is shunned. It's because society is so vain to be proper that we have a set of principles of what makes beauty that we label everything else not in our views as vice. And this revolves how vice is merely created by us and how we need to understand how beauty corrupts society. Beauty in itself is vice for it creates it. We need to stop judging and realize that there is beauty in itself in the wicked side of society for we tend to be why they tend to be the way they are.

Fun fact goemon was a theif who was active in Japan during the mid to late 15th century who made a large amount of wealth by stealing from Japanese nobility if memory serves he accumulated more money than some of the richest people on earth during his life. By today's standards goemon stole a fortune similar to the amount Steve jobs has made in his life
He was also boiled alive as punishment for being caught of his crimes. That's where he got his weakness.

So is the Kabuki theme relevant to Goemon? Like were his stories told with Kabuki or is that an aesthetic choice by him/the writers?
All of the character's personas are based on theives in history, and Goemon is no exception.

it's probably because he ripped it off quickly like a bandaid. I assume the pain and wounds vanish when the persona and clothes manifest so he didn't have much time to feel the pain

Because "Let's see what you're made of" felt more hyped up and appropriate to the event.
I picked “Let’s see what you’re made of.” Because it fit the fighting that was about to happen and made it seem like you expect big things from Yusuke.
“You got this?” sounds like you don’t believe Yusuke could fight or anything.
It's the most positive and encouraging of his newfound strength

Out of all of the palace owners, Madarame is the one I hate the most, I know what it's like to be betrayed by a parental figure and figure out their true nature, so it just kinda hits home for me.
Me too! I relate to Yusuke and Futaba the most as characters.
Yusuke because he is an artist and was being mistreated by a parental figure.
Futaba because her trauma manifested in the form of severe social anxiety and agoraphobia. Thankfully the agoraphobia is gone and most of my anxiety as well, but I still see myself in her.

If you think about it, that also takes a lot of physical strength.
@@givmi_more_w9251 it actually doesn't require much strength at all.... people do it on accident all the time.... to do it "intentionally" like that though requires a lot of will or other factor, like the pain he is in, distracting the body.... the real reason it SEEMS hard other wise is because the body puts limiters on itself when in pain from self-harm like that to prevent injury... same idea as to why someone has a hard time "intentionally" biting their own tongue off (something I hear referenced on shows a lot and laugh at) as your jaw is FAR more than capable of doing so, but your brain would sub-consciously try to stop you and there for hinder your strength

I'll never get sick of watching him awaken....
What I found interesting, is that Yusuke goes from screaming and writhing, back to calm and collected before gracefully ripping off his mask - he is the only one who manages to somewhat chill before their persona manifests (apart from the last two, but their awakenings are different to begin with). And yet, he still has the best rapeface afterwards.
His scream at 4:05, especially in the Japanese dub, still makes my blood freeze everytime I hear it.
As for the finger thing: Am I the only one who looked at that and thought how fucking strong he must be to push his left (weak) hand so fiercely onto a smooth surface that he would tear his skin? Yeah, I know, Metaverse and such, still. I was like .. "Oh fuck the hell yes". ... I'm probably going to hell for this, but I found that weirdly hot.

His persona sounds like a certain prince of hoshido from fire emblem fates
Actually he does share the same voice actor as Chrom (Matthew Mercer), he also shares the same voice actor as Kanji from Persona 4, Ryoma/Shigure, Prince Demande(Diamond) from Sailor Moon, Levi from Attack on Titan, and so many others. You should hear him sing...just look up Shigure singing from Fire Emblem Fates.

In my opinion Yusuke is as close to joker as Yosuke is to Yu Narukami. Yusuke always spends time with Joker and it actually feels natural while Ryuji kinda drags Joker along. Yusuke is my favorite persona character. Such a greatly written character.

i know barely anything about kabuki theatre, so i won't really elaborate, but i think it's really cool that goemon has the music style of kabuki in the background and does the sort of dramatic pose thing they do in traditional japanese theatre. like how goemon shakes his head and then poses. there's so many interesting things to pay attention to during yusuke's awakening
fun fact: goemon's eyes seems to be inspired on the old japanese art, if you search for goemon on google you will instantly notice it
