I love my Sidewinder Ti-Tri. I can use it as a gassifier wood stove as well. You can also fit everything in the pot (I use the Evernew ultralight 900 ml wide/short and it all fits inside the pot, "Inferno" insert and all.
With that alcohol set up I have had boil times of approximately 5:30 with the Kojin, likely because the pot is closer to the burner and so there is a wider surface area covered by the flame. Since the cone is shorter they even have holes in it so you can use stakes to raise the pot to use the 12-10 and a higher level to allow the wood burning function. This month I will be using it on a 40 mile loop hike if you are interested in video.
Ernie, please test Caldera Cone with Trangia, Evernew Titanium Alcohol Stove, Esbit Fuel Tablets, etc. Great video, per usual, and thank you.
I owned one of these ten or so years ago to use with my Snow Peak 900. And you've done a good job of reviewing it - it's efficient, and I wont't spoil your next vid on wind testing ;) What failed it for me was the bulk, the fact that I needed to keep the cone in the container to stop it shredding my kit. And, sorry to state, the 10/12 got hugely beaten up by a full fuel bottle.
Another positive thing about this is the overall weight savings. Thanks. I use this on the CDT.
Hi Ernie. One thing I used to struggle with until I settled on a Solo burner was elevation. At higher elevations it takes more alcohol to boil an equivalent amount of water. I usually filled my stove with more than what I knew it should take and poured the remainder back into the bottle. I hate to waste fuel and with the can stoves there is always a little bit left after pouring it back and also some evaporates, as well as the occasional spill. How much? It depends. I’ve been caught short before (partly due to not packing extra to compensate for elevation in the first place) and wondered if the waste would have made a difference. It adds up, particularly after a few days and maybe nine or ten meals with coffee. That’s why I use the Solo (Trangia style with a sealing cap). I snuff it and cap it and there’s no waste. Unfortunately the heavier material is not quite as efficient but not excessively so. I use aluminum flashing for a wind screen that goes up to the top of my pot. I keep about a quarter to a half inch gap so the heat is contained close to the stove and imparts the heat up the sides. I stapled crumpled and straightened aluminum foil inside the flashing which adds some insulation. It works quite well. The system boils a pint of 50 degree water at sea level with an ambient temperature around 70 degrees in about five minutes. The aluminum foil weighs about a gram and a half and makes a big difference (cuts off about a minute). Without the wind screen it takes nine minutes or more. Every little bit helps and I’m a cheap old miser. I’ve looked at the volcano design before and wondered if it works as well or better than what I use all things considered.
I have the ti nano for hikes, and the full size for base camp type use. I use wood, trangia alcohol, trangia gas burner, solid fuel, charcoal, pellets, basically whatever fuel I happen to have on hand. All work a treat.
Thanks Ernie, keep 'em coming...Hiram would have been proud!
Hiram would have been proud..... Has something happened to him?
@@alandavis9180 I don't know if anything has happened to Hiram but he hasn't been active on hin YT channel for 3 years and not on Flikr for ages so he doesn't seem active on Social Media. If he was he might have seen Ernie's video and if he had seen it, he would have been proud. Hence my comment.
@@Bowlin01 My thoughts are that Hiram , has passed away, sometime ago. Ay least that is what I gathered. Not really sure , but I think so.
Interesting review and products. One product that seems to rarely get tested in recent times is the clickstand with its wind shield.
With an evernew titanium alcohol stove I get impressive boil times even when it's windy.
Very light and compact especially the Titanium version.
The Clikstand seems like the Trangia triangle with a windscreen ring. The Clikstand seems more sturdy watching videos of it
It looks like the Kojin stove will fit into an Esbit stove. I used an empty .177 pellet tin as a stove, it fits perfectly into the Esbit stove, the Kojin looks like it’s the same size.
The boil time is similar to a Trangia 27. Alcohol produces a certain BTU per ounce. This is much lighter but you give up the flexibility of having two pots and possibly a kettle. Depends on what you want to live with. A fancee feast and some aluminum flashing might be good enough for some who like experimenting.
Add a simmer ring for Knorr's Sides. The Caddy Sack make an insulated mug and great cozy for freezer bag meals. The Kojin heats water quick, but the 12-10 gives you options.
Nice video Ernie, really wanted to see the Caldera Cone and excited to see you test it!
Thanks for showing the caldera, looks like a very efficient approach!
The one big downside I see is size (in transit) and fragility.
The 'wasted' space can be reclaimed by packing other gear or food inside the case, but I really wonder how long the stove will last before the materials a deformed too much!
Looking forward to your 'long term review', in a year?
give it a try with esbit as well. I found with the Esbit titanium folding stove under the caldera cone I get good results for esbit. Also, try the Kojin at different heights rather than flat on the ground.
12/10 stove can be more useful if you purchase the simmer ring ..I have used this setup for the last Two years and I can unequivocally say; it's the best fuel efficient stove System out there. I'm using the Tokes 700 pan. Boil times is 7 minutes run outs are around 13 minutes with 1 oz of Heat.. however if you use the simmer ring after boiling run out is 21 minutes.. if you use the simmering from the vary beginning runout is 55 minutes Really? Yes Really on 1 oz of fuel. Great for cooking Rice or stews that religiously wants to burn. All that being said: I purchased the Esbit simmering set. Normally with Esbit it's full bore boils two cups of water and that's it. However by useing Esbit simmer set ..instead of all 5 sides burning all at once..you can have 4 sides 3 sides two sides down too one side of the Esbit burning. I have can control the amount of heat Esbit tabs puts out. Can't truely say how long you can simmer on each step of control due to windage and outside temp but it's significant efficient in control factor.
Nice! Been looking at these off and on for a few years now... still haven’t pulled the trigger.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been no cook for the past couple years, but was looking to pickup the Caldera Keg with Kojin. When I cook, I’m more a ramen soup guy vs eating straight out of a bag, so I like the double-duty storage and food grade cups it comes in. Only other test I could think of is for shoulder seasons, how much it’s affected by cooler outside temps.
This stove has worked out well for me with my MSR Titan Kettle.
I have exactly the same setup
Any plans to test the ti-tri Trail Designs stoves?
Chris Townsend is a fan of these. He makes a living hiking and writing... and he’s a stove nerd.... so that says something...
Nice review! I plan to try this kit myself. Thank you!
Nice looking setup. I'll take a look at them and watch you break yours in soon. 😎 Take care, Ernie.
Very very cool Ernie! Thanks for sharing as always
I'm taking my Caldera and Kojin to Dolly Sods tomorrow morning for a 4 day hike.
How did you get on with it? I have mine arriving Tuesday.
@@Andy-LucyGSD Works great! Only one thing I don't like about it is how much space it takes up. I think I'm going to trip it down a bit and try to figure out another way to pack the cone.
Great info! I was looking at your lighter and didn't see it in your gear list. Is it one you're happy with? Would you buy another or get something different? What brand is it? Thanks!
I have a Vargo Triad stove and a Everwear .9L pot; I don't need another stove. Will the Caldera Cone work with my stove? They don't seem to sell the Cone separately. What do you know about that?
Enjoy these stove videos - one for the future could be a Bushcraft Essentials LF kit :)
They are a sweet cooking kit
Fancy Feast with a wind screen for me.
me 2
Hard to beat
I thought cat can was it for me but it limited packing in Stanly two cup cook set. So I went with food can stove that just fits in the Stanley and a ten once bottle of fuel in that then two mini bics, scrubb pad. Then GSI cup outside. This is compact for one person.
Nice video brother. From my experience, alcohol stove seem to burn a little cooler and longer if you have a pot on them. I Wonder how long those stoves would go actually under the pot. 🤔. It will be in urban environment then, so maybe would actually burn quicker. 🤷♂️
How about using the cone with a classic Trangia burner? Thanks Ernie 👍🙂
Hmmmm, I may or may not have already shot that video...stay tuned 😊
Are the top vent holes open or are they blocked by the pot? It looks like there is some space between the side of the cone and the pot.
How would that puck burner work with a nano firebox stove ( w/ solid fuel plate installed ) ?
That’s brilliant.
Doc, have you ever tested different alc. fuels ie. denatured, isopropyl, heat, etc.?
It seems to me that some are more volital than others.
I know you were asking Ernie the Q. but I didn't see a response so if I may.
Most say, and i think Ernie say it also that denatured alcohol burns best and cleanest. Coming in second is yellow bottle of Heet fuel line de-iceing.
Research it yourself and you will find it true.
Some say that some fuels are more toxic but they only reported what they had heard someone uninformed said. Hope this helped and hope I didn't over step. Namaste
So it’s pretty much a water boiler. I would like to see if you can simmer.......maybe a soup or something with a stove like the Turbo Gnome, with and without the simmer ring.
Even though the cat food can is designed to have the pot set on it lets try it anyway.
Thanks!
Ernie what type of fuel do you use ?
With the lid can the flame be extinguished and the fuel saved ?
James Keatts On the Kojin, I do not see why not. It does have a small membrane that helps keep it water tight, so I would remove this before snuffing our the flame and put it back for storage. Thanks for watching!
The lining for the lid of Kojin is silicone and will not melt. Yes you can snuff burning kojin out with its own lid.@@PaleoHikerMD
Yes
What fuel did you use
My main qualm with these cones is that they don't fit into the pot you're using. Which seems obvious because it has to be higher, there were 2 piece cones around, the only one I know of is the old Stormin Norman cones, RIP Norman.
To limited; doesn't beat the Trangia which is more versatile.
so can you cook pasta without burning it?
If you leave the pot on you will get a longer boil time ..I've gotten 15-17 min. With one oz of heat fuel
I love these Caldera stoves. Boil water in barely over 1/2 ounce in your conditions. Not versatile and very bulky for packing.
Can You do anything with it besides
boiling water ?
You could add dehydrated food (i.e. Backcountry Cuisine) in the water after you boil it, thus rehydrating the food.. But yeah, this cone would not really allow you to use a pan of any sort..
What’s the benefit to alcohol stove compared to a propane?
Difference is less weight, simplicity and less cost (especially with diy stoves) with alcohol. Advantage of propane is higher temperatures and speed of boil time as well as simmer mode.
Hope I helped
Hit that ding dong bell XD
Can the alcohol stove be used by itself?
Not without a pot stand which the cone is (and windscreen)
@@techguy9023 thank you.
Six minutes is good for a alcohol stove.
what kind of fuel do you recommend. i have read of different fuel such as denatured alcohol, heet, etc . . .
I've had the most luck with Heet, and plan a video soon looking at the different options. Thanks for watching!
