- Jesus is our Sabbath: In this passage the author of Hebrews continues an important analogy he introduced in Hebrews 3-that of holding fast to our faith so we can enter into God’s rest. "A Sabbath rest remains for the people of God" (Heb. 4:9). This is part 6 in our verse-by-verse apologetic Bible Study of Herbrews.

The context is a gathering crowd upon which Jesus is reminded of Jonah.
The point is faith is worthless:

So they took up Jonah (he offered to help) and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice (perhaps his family & friends, or a goat, who's to know?) unto the LORD, and made vows.
The superstitious crowd is wicked.
The wicked believes by signs.
It is by faith Jonah was picked up and tossed overboard, being mindless, he asked for it.
It is by faith in God we have Moses: World's worst navigator, with one foot in The Garden of Eden. God & Faith have a perfect record of doing nothing, so we have the sayings, God helps those helping themselves & nothing fails like prayers in a children's hospital. It feels to me that the Hebrew writer is in part a worship leader. In fact, it feels like the writer closes his eyes in a worshipful focus upon the very person of Jesus. Here as if to introduce the idea of looking upon God with spiritual focus (faith). Remember, it is the Hebrew writer that teaches us what faith is - that it is seeing what cannot be seen and being certain of what is coming. Later he will say “since we have confidence to enter the most holy place…” do you feel the writer closing his eyes as if to lead the reader into his experience of worshipping God. Try closing your eyes and listen to someone reading what follows… “let us then draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Seeing Jesus operate his spiritual priesthood with faith in the inner sanctuary of my mind leads me to an exercise that feels like worship. It feels like the writer does this in a spiral-like way building up to the pinnacle of the two mountains in chapter 12.

Wow chiasmus! I love learning about new rhetorical devices Rob, thank you! I'm going to have to go back & look at some passages that have been puzzling me with the amount of repetition going on - for instance Romans 7 (in fact much of Romans is repetitive) - to see if they fit the chiasmus structure...

@@beckyfrechette4439 Jesus personally kept the Sabbath. Throughout the gospels he was in the synagogues oh the Sabbath, he attended the Feasts of the Lord, he healed on the Sabbath, his decibels plucked grain on the Sabbath. Jesus warned of persecution and told them to pray it doesn’t happen on Sabbath, and Jesus rouse from the dead on Sabbath.
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, keep it and be glad as you have freedom to do so, but as soon as you make it a requirement, you are no longer being obedient to Jesus.
The "torah observant" I personally KNOW, now are rebaptizing themselves in the y names and are openly telling us that the name of JESUS is actually the name of "shatan"...this is how far they have traveled!!!

Hello, Mr. Miroth. I guess it depends on the translation you use. The ESV uses "rest/rested" 11 times in Hebrews 4. As I mentioned in this video, the Greek behind that word is κατάπαυσιν, which comes from the root παυω.

"The point of the Torah is Jesus..."
Jesus said that not one jot or tittle would pass away until all would be fulfilled.
That verse is often used by kjv-only folks about the Received Text, etc. But, recently it occurred to me that He was referring to the Torah (because the NT hadn't been written yet) and that He fulfilled it all. (Even Daniel 7 was fulfilled in Christ, right? "All power is given unto me...")
So, isn't the "preservation dogma" kind of a misdirect, sleight of hand? Since, IMO, all was fulfilled, isn't it feasible that some books could have been lost since 33AD?

True that "soma" means "body," but, as is true with all Hebrew nouns, there are both literal & figurative connotations. "Soma" can be a literal corpse (animal or human), a literal living body (animal or human), a literal planet or star (although we might consider this a figurative use in English?), a figurative group of men/mankind as in a family, assembly, or church (which are obviously not a single human body but rather collectively made up of human bodies), or a literal substance/solidity/physical object as opposed to the shadow cast by such an object... Since the verse itself (Col. 2:17) mentions "shadow" (skia), obviously it is comparing/contrasting something unsolid/ephemeral/unreal with something (i.e. Christ's literal body) that is most certainly solid/substantive/real.
In fact the entire letter of Colossians is a glorious treatise on the "mystery" of Christ's body - both in literal & figurative senses - being conjoined with the collective of believers (body/family/church) in a spiritual union.
It is NOT a "passage about not being judged by outsiders" other than the passing reference to not allow anyone to conjoin the substantive Body of Christ with ephemeral shadow practices of diet, festivals, sabbaths, false humility & the worship of angels. To defend diet/festivals/sabbaths in this context is to also defend false humility & the worship of angels, which is somewhere we obviously ought not to go.
SIDE NOTE TO ROB: Colossians 2 : 16-23 looks like it might have a chiasmus-type structure? As the same few points are reiterated/reinforced in a circular way?
Yes, Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. Do you realize that there are other Sabbaths or Holy Convocations besides the weekly 7th day Sabbath. The Feasts in Leviticus 23 also have annual SABBATHS.
No, I'm not an Adventist. Or any other denomination which are not Scriptural. I'm a rock solid believer in Yeshua/Jesus and Calvary and am obedient to the Torah as best as I can.
I know what Grace and Torah combined means. I desire to be one of the greatest in the Kingdom and not the least in Matthew 5:17-19. I'm going for the prize in this race as Paul spoke of. He kept the Torah and applied it with the grace of Calvary. This is what I choose to do also. I'm a sold out bond servant to the Father and Son. Deuteronomy 15:16-17 explains what a " dulous " is. ( Sold out bond servant.)

Hello Rob, Would you be able to explain why the older Bibles say that a LAW and an ORDINANCE was to be given to LIGHTEN THE GENTILES, yet newer Bibles try to skew it? I would think this is concerning considering so many say the law has been done away with. Thank you so much.
Isaiah 51:4:
AKJV: “Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: FOR A LAW SHALL PROCEED FROM ME, and I will make my judgment to rest for a LIGHT OF THE PEOPLE."
Matthew's Bible 1537: "Haue respecte vnto me then, O my people, and laye thyne eare to me: FOR A LAWE AND AN ORDYNAUNCE shall go forth from me, to LYGHTEN THE GENTYLES."
The bible says da'at is light (da'at is bible knowledge), and ignorance is darkness. This law and ordinance might have been sent away by the spirit to cast light onto the gentiles, so that they may be also healed and saved. Rob has already recorded a video explaining that the Torah laws were fulfilled by Jesus Yahushua, in a way that his perfect example could be legally used for a perfect sacrifice. There's a difference between destroying an acorn and planting it into the ground so it becomes a tree. Fulfillment of the law is the latter one.

LAW = 10 COMMANDMENTS + Everything Christ commanded (Matthew 28:19-20)
It's quite interesting to me how so many say there's no law and Christ "fulfilled" it - yes, He fulfilled the law of Moses....but even Christ HIMSELF gave these LAWS below which aren't 'suggestions' and happen to still be valid.
Matthew 19:9: "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."
Matthew 5:27-28: "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."
I will listen ot the law of Christ before any apostle. We will all be held responsible for fulfilling Christ's law. Love thy neighbor is A LAW, otherwise, we wouldn't be able to "FULFILL IT"
THE LAW is written in believer's hearts - which means, it's still valid ..... otherwise, there'd be no point in the Lord putting it there in the first place.
Keeping the law (the ten commandments) shows you LOVE and KNOW Jesus. If you KEEP THE LAW (the ten commandments), He will MANIFEST HIMSELF TO YOU (John 14:15; John 14:21). Jesus says that if you want to have eternal life, KEEP THE LAW (the ten commandments; Matthew 19:16-17). Jesus also says that you will be blessed and have the right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates if you do so (Revelation 22:14).
We should not be deceived by anyone - we need to read the word for ourselves and take Jesus' words to heart.
Hello, Beloved. The Hebrew text says "A תּוֹרָה (torah: direction, instruction, law) will go out from me, and I will set my מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat: decision, judgement) for a אוֹר (ôr: light) to the עַם (am: people, kin)."
There are two big reasons we see differences in the English translations between older and newer Bibles. (#1) People spoke English differently in the 16th century than they do today. In some cases the meaning of English words have changed. (#2) In the past 100+ years, thousands of very old manuscripts have been discovered (e.g. Dead Sea Scrolls) which have helped us to better piece together what the original text said.

Please tell me how the Sabbath of Genesis 2 could be a shadow prefiguring the atoning sacrifice of Jesus before the fall. Why would Adam and Eve be presented with the need of a Saviour before they fell?
Jesus is the lamb slain from before the founfation of the earth. God sees the end from the beginning.

Hi Michael. God's rest on the second day of creation did not prefigure the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Rather, it shows us what the intended, perfect state of HIs creation is. And then sin entered the picture and _that's_ when we get the first hint about the atoning sacrifice of Jesus (Gen 3:15).

@michaelbrutsche75 it was a shadow of what was to come in Christ just as Genesis 3:15 is prophetic of Christ crushing the head of the serpent. God reveals these over time to humanity.

@@jimharmon2300 Hi, Jim! I believe every prophecy and promise of God has or will come to pass. The question is what exactly the prophecy of Ezekiel 45 refers to. Does the "prince" refer to Jesus? Would Jesus need to make more sin sacrifices after His sacrifice on the cross? Is Ezekiel talking about God's final kingdom on earth or something else? When the apostle John was describing the new heaven and new earth, he wrote, "And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb" (Rev. 21:22).
The words of Ezekiel need to be reconciled with the NT, which says that Jesus "has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him." (Heb. 9:26-28). And therefore, "There is no longer any offering for sin" (Heb. 10:18). Notice it doesn't say there is no longer a blood offering. It says there is no longer *_any_* offering for sin.

The Word created all things ( John 1:1-3 ) , and the Word became flesh ( John 1:14 ) ; which is Yeshua .
Yeshua rested on the 7th day after he had created all things .
Man was made on the 6th day .
Man hast been given 7 days , or 7 thousand years .
The nation of Israel is the only nation adopted by God at this time , the only nation under his covenant to obey his laws .
The election / saints/ 144,000 Israelites/ the bride of the Lamb ; are the ones who will receive their rest on the 7th day ; the thousand year reign of Christ .
Romans 11:7 , What then ? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for ; but the election hath obtained it , and the rest were blinded " .
The elect are the ones Christ confirmed a covenant with for one week in Daniel 9:27 .
The election are the ones in the first resurrection , at Christ return to setup his kingdom on this earth for 1000 years .

Man is currently working to get salvation , which is his day of rest from all of this labors . The election/saints/144,000 Israelites , will obtain they day of rest at Yeshua return to setup his kingdom for 1000 years ; they are the firstfruits redeemed to the Father & the Lamb ( Rev. 14:4 ) .
The Israelites in the wilderness with Moses did not believe , so they will not be in the first resurrection , Yeshua kingdom .
Christ and the election/saints/144,000 Israelites , will reign and govern from Jerusalem at his kingdom .
Psalm 122:1-5 , 1.(A Song of degrees of David.) I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
2Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.
3Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:
4Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
5For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

Yeshua was the true vine. Yeshua alone is the way, truth, and life. True Israel are those who are in Christ. The Jews and their house was left desolate. Only by faith is one saved and not by works or herety. Those who deny the anointed one came in the flesh are of the spirit of antichrist. Israel recieved the promise that YAHAVAH gave them, total destruction. Accomplished in 70-136AD. Sorry, there Is no Old Covenant Israel they are gone or YAHAVAH broke the covenant by not destroying them. It's truly as simple as that.

Only one nation did He promise to utterly destroy if they were unfaithful. You can't possibly think or say that Old Covenant Israel in any way can be described as faithful. They didn't even remain faithful for 40 days after they made the covenant. The line of David was most definitely preserved, even when it was diminished to one lone small boy. This is clearly speaking about the works required of Israel to receive their promised Kingdom. There are no works required of us today, as members of Christ's body, to enter into the Kingdom of God. The example the author of Hebrews gives is of the wandering in the wilderness (Hebrews 3:17), a generation of Israel who perished due to unbelief. This has nothing to do with us, but the final generation of Israel, after 2000 years of wandering. Just as the 1st generation of Israel out of Egypt failed to enter the promised land, the 1st century generation failed to receive the Kingdom, resulting in a 40 year (40 jubilees = 2000 years) wandering until the promises come upon a single generation. Israel will receive the promised Kingdom and enter into that rest, after the fullness of the Gentiles comes into Paul's ministry (Romans 11:25-26).

Presenting the Sabbath as only Jewish is typically an attempt to pluck the fourth commandment out of the law of God and toss it aside. The true sign of salvation by faith is found in the Sabbath. The sign of salvation by works will be found in a substitute Sabbath put in place by humans. When people determine to set aside God's law and keep a day of their own choosing, they are not truly resting in grace, but attempting to be saved by their own works. There is no better way to spot such a deceitful religion than by a spurious or false Sabbath. It really comes down to choosing my way or God's way. Hebrews 4 shows that the Israelites, during the time of the exodus, could have found the spiritual rest of grace if they had exercised faith in God. The sacrificial system pointed them to the gospel. So also the people during the time of Joshua might have experienced that rest in grace, as also the Israelites in the time of David.

I say that because you repeatedly cited (and relied on) a *GROSS PERVERION* of what Colossians 2:16-17 actually says. Simply stated, that passage says nothing, whatsoever, about Yeshua ("Jesus") being the "reality" (or "substance") of anything. So, in reality (pun intended), you were not citing the Word of God; but rather, you were citing the words of men propagating their own false doctrines.
So then, for the sake of those who don't know what "Dynamic equivalence" means, here is it's definition from Tyndale (a Bible publisher) :
_In dynamic-equivalence translations, translators attempt to translate the message/meaning of the original-language texts into an equivalent English word or expression. These translations are generally less literal on a word-for-word basis but still seek to capture the meaning of the original-language texts._
And, here is a warning (found on "Got Questions") about the pitfalls of "Dynamic equivalence" that every single person who watched this teaching got thrown into:

In other words, simply because that usage is listed, it doesn't give it any real legitimacy, as you are suggesting - as that would be nothing more than circular reasoning. Your suggested translation of "but the body of Christ which is the Church" completely misses the contrast Paul is making between σκιά and σῶμα. And it also twists the text to mean the opposite of Paul's larger point in vv. 16-23. He says that, because God’s presence, salvation, and victory are revealed fully in Christ (Col 2:9-15), He is sufficient for the Colossians’ salvation. There is no need to pursue additional teachings or practices.

"Soma" can be a literal corpse (animal or human), a literal living body (animal or human), a literal planet or star (although we might consider this a figurative use in English?), a figurative group of men/mankind as in a family, assembly, or church (which are obviously not a single human body but rather collectively made up of human bodies), or a literal substance/solidity/physical object as opposed to the shadow cast by such an object... Since the verse itself (Col. 2:17) mentions "shadow" (skia), obviously it is comparing/contrasting something unsolid/ephemeral/unreal with something (i.e. Christ's literal body) that is most certainly solid/substantive/real.
In fact the entire letter of Colossians is a glorious treatise on the "mystery" of Christ's body - both in literal & figurative senses - being conjoined with the collective of believers (body/family/church) in a spiritual union.

So, on that note, let me point out one of the biggest issues in Hebrews 4, which is with the interpretation of verse 10.

Notice how the second translation does not put the word "cease" (rest) in the past tense, which is a game changer! In other words, it's saying that when one enters into the rest of God (salvation), they also cease (an ongoing action) from their labors (on the seventh day) just as God did from His!
Nonetheless, if you disagree, and it's a given that you will, then please be sure to tell me exactly what "works" you suppose one has rested from?
