Welcome to my vlog channel and thank you so much for watching! I've been wanting to make a raised bed and grow fruits and vegetables in my garden...and finally did it! A lot of our neighbors are farmers and they give us vegetables they grow all the time so I'm hoping I can give my fruits and vegetables back soon!
Looking forward to seeing your first harvest 😁Please make sure you get bird/animal safe netting!! It is very sad seeing birds and other creatures getting tangled, hurt and killed by the wrong kinds of netting being used
Thank you for the video. It's allways amazing to see, just how much effort goes into these projects. I feel like a lazy person, my appartment doesn't get much sunlight and while I want to grow flowers and such, there isn't much that I can do here. 😭 It's just my opinion, but I think, just using the vegetables your neighbors give you, is already something you "give back". If I would grow more, than I can use and sell, I would be happy to know, that it's not going to waste. There is only so much you can use yourself after all. Seeing vegetable becoming bad, is rather sad. And knowing that the person I give those vegetables to, is a good cook, would make me rather proud. And who knows, maybe they saw some of your videos and enjoyed the recipes you shared?😊 I can understand your view too, that you want to give something tangible back. Well, give it time, I'm sure it will come. (I really need to start to listen to my own advice... I'm rather impatient over something and need to wait too 🙃 I'm a lot less graceful about it, than you. I'm just glad, that noone seems angry about it) The rised bed looks great. No wonder Haku likes it. Well, I wish you a great harvest. 🥰 Lots of love from europe🤗
I know the struggle of getting produce from neighbors and not knowing how to repay them, lol! I had a neighbor at my previous apartment who worked at a food bank and sometimes gave us fruits that the bank still had. I once turned some plums she gave into a plum cobbler. I had never made a plum cobbler before, only a cherry cobbler, but the ones she gave us were so sour, I figured baking them was probably the best use for them. I gave her a large plate of it and hope she enjoyed it. It tasted better on day two and beyond, once it sat in the syrup and became sweeter.
You could always give back to your neighbours with your cooking! I would make chutney and jams from the chilli and fruit my neighbour gave me! A great way to build community 😁
Man, Rachel and Jun have built such an idyllic life. I wish I could spend all day with adorable cats, making videos and doing random DIY projects that please me 🥺
what is stopping you from doing that? Like you could work at a animal shelter. make video with the cats there. plus there is always something that will need to be maintained.
They have day jobs, I'm sure, given the infrequency of their videos. This is probably just the side hustle. Still, seems like a very pleasant life and I'm happy for them 😊
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley I don't think so. I think they have enough subscribers in their channels combined, even with infrequent uploads, to make a living. Also, they're on the countryside now, so life is cheaper.

That’s so nice that you’re thinking about giving back to your neighbours too! Your vlog channels are really nice and I hope the veggie garden goes well 🌱
Careful with planting paprika and peppers next to each other, they are cousins and when the pollinators come they may cross pollinate and the plants will hybridise
Maybe this is what you mean, but that's only true if he plants the seeds from these plants' peppers. The plants that grow from those seeds could be hybrids, but the peppers produced this year will not be.
paprika is just a word used for peppers in the Balkan and some other European countries :) it is always so funny to me...cos, here we have- hot paprika, sweet paprika, bell paprika, chilly paprika and so on :)
I've had the pink lemonade blueberries before, they don't taste lemonade-y per se, but they do have a sweet-tart flavor with a hint of lemon? They're really good! Hopefully your bush does well and you can try them for yourself 😄 Good to see the bed frame is Haku approved, too.
I've said it before, Jun and Rachel are the dream team; there's nothing they cannot do, and Jun, you and Rachel make it look effortless. I hope you have a terrific harvest; how nice that you're slso thinking about giving back to your neighbours too! Cheers from Southern Ontario 🇨🇦
The garden bed came out really good, it's great you remembered the arbor to repurpose as a bird net, keep an eye on your blueberry bushes as some birds will try to eat the berries even before they ripen. One thing I learned about growing any sort of peppers is fruitflies love them and also citrus, since you have both planted in your garden you will probably have to spray to keep the fruitflies away (I've had to do that every summer, even the hottest peppers don't deter them).
I love that you built your beds! Just a suggestion for the future: Peat moss is a non-renewable resource and you could use multiple other materials like coconut coir, mulch/wood-based products, compost, pine needles, rice hulls, or leaf mold.
Jun i watch a lot of UA-cam and I've reached a point where a lot of the time I'm worried that I'll watch a video and not enjoy it because I'm not in the mood and it'll be a waste of a video. This has never happened with you and Rachel's videos. You guys never cease to lighten my mood even when I'm in a depressive state. I love you guys
Thank you Jun (and Rachel too) these videos are so entertaining and informative and on a personal note really have motivated me to act on my own projects and getting to them. Typically a procrastinator, seeing the diligence and commitment to what you put your mind to is inspiring and gives me focus. I adore your beautiful cats and all the cool things you two come up with! ❤😊
Yes! Blueberries are native to the americas, and are common in the southern US! They're called 'Rabbit Eye' because the white to pink-ish berries can look like an eye with an iris, like a big rabbit's eyes. There's lots of different varieties, but these are some of those most common for producing big fruits. You may want to consider bird netting- as they're very popular with wildlife! Good luck with them!
Jun is so innocent, “Rachel loves spice, so I’ll just buy the Trinidad scorpion, the literal spiciest thing on the planet” 😂 I love the raised bed! I really want to make something similar but cedar wood is so expensive in the US…I bet it’s much cheaper in Japan. So I have been working on a ground garden instead!
Love this. Can't wait to see how the blueberries turn out. Especially those unique pink ones. It was so fun to see your kitty out on his harness enjoying the yard safely. What great enrichment for them!
Glad you remembered to guard the blueberries! A long time ago, I was driving past a blueberry farm and a bird pooped on my window. They must have eaten a lot of blueberries because the poop looked like a bloodsplat! Scared me 😂
This type of videos are probably the most calming ones on the whole youtube, makes me feel nostalgic for my parent's garden. They grow all kinds of things and really put a lot of effort into it, it's a great hobby for them. Thank you for sharing this quality content with us, Jun! I wish you to have a good harvest this year💜
every time you upload, it's pure wholesomeness and happiness.. these videos make me feel at peace in such a stressful world. thank you for your hard work!!
I always love what they are showing us in videos: recipes, diy projects, home building and decorating. My husband and i are in the process of planning our own landed house. And i do included things like cat friendly house, big window for a lot of natural light, wooden interior and also lots of plants in the garden/yard. So, thank you Jun and Rachel😊😊
In America we prune the bottoms of our pepper plants 12 inches up and pinch off the bottom leaves to improve pepper production as well prevent root diseases. The important distinction is to pinch the lower leaves off, and not snip them off as that will leave the capillaries of the leaf open and the plant will “bleed”. In any case, I hope this information is useful to you! Your garden looks incredible, and I got some ideas of my own from it for my future plans. Happy Gardening sir!
That bed came out really nice. One thing I thought of though, is that you can also use the frame to grow some climbing vegetables like peas or runner beans, which would give you more variety for the same area
That looks amazing Jun! Please give us an update as to how things grow! Highly recommend feeding those peppers ocean mix fertilizer once they start producing every 6 weeks or so. Also, since Rachel loves peppers, maybe dry them to make spices or ferment to make your own hot sauce? Super easy and delicious!
I started watching your videos a couple of years back. Glad to see you guys are doing well. Basically your videos inspired me to keep on trying on cooking, having my three crazy cats and try enjoy life more often. Thanks.
I've seen lots of people use the method of painting rocks the color of whatever fruit they've got planted (in their case it was strawberries) so that when the birds go down to try and eat them, they learn that they're not food, and so they left the real fruits alone. It could be worth trying out :)
I have always loved having a big garden, one year I had over 40 tomato plants and half a dozen types of pepper/chili plants (about 12 of each) A one-acre garden is a lot so I ended up paying the neighborhood kids to help. Plus I gave their parents many bags of veggies and jars of canned salsa and canned tomatoes.
the frame can also be used as a structure for your plants to have support from so you can get a larger yield and the plant will be healthier.. good job... love your content
You guys truly found a great place to live. I love all the projects you show us. The attention to detail with the slight angle on the ledge so fruits and veggies won't fall out of the raised bed was *chefs kiss *

thank you for uploading videos, whether it is from this channel or the other ones, i've always enjoyed every single one of them. your and rachel's videos always makes my day brighter and better. once again, thank you so much.
So much fun! I have a container garden on my deck and I've learned a lot in the last year. Blueberries really do need acidic soil. They also need a certain number of chill hours, so don't worry about protecting from the cold unless the flower buds have started to swell and open. Winter is the best time to prune because you can see the flower buds. With peppers, they are actually perennials if you can protect them from cool temps. They start to pout below 50F/10C.
Love the raised bed. My mother planted a garden in the front, side and back of the house, she also began with 1 raised bed. Now, 10 years later,we harvest avocados, mango, loquat, raspberries and many different herbs.
Love your videos , your cats are lovely ❤ , have you considered having a cat patio, a area that is attached to your entrance to garden that’s has a cat door so your cats go thru cat door maybe in window out to a small or up to the roof meshed in room that they can sit and play in that is sheltered from rain or sun and it’s just big enough for them to sit around and play and watch the birds and is safe from other cats and you can lock the cat door at night ad keep them inside ❤❤❤❤, bless you , your garden is looking great
Wow, what are the chances? I was just thinking about making a raised bed when I got back home, and after many months, Jun comes out with a video! Thank you!
Jun, in a raised garden, you want the soil all the way to the top. The soil does settle a bit after awhile so you want to allow for that settling by initially bringing up the soil to the top. Also, look into no-dig gardening. By cultivating, you're bringing up weed seeds up into the raised bed.
Love the new raised Bed! If you worry about birds you can hang some knickknacks which reflect light on the Frame. A CD or anything wrapped in foil. It worked for our blueberries and red currant, which i could also recommend if you wanna share some fruits with your neighbors. They yield so many fruit!
10:30.... Idea. Not sure if either of you knit or crochet but there are bags you can make to hold produce. Maybe while these are growing, you can give out the bags as gifts?
Oh, and blueberries LOVE WELL DRAINING SOIL so you might have to keep an eye on how much water they get where you've put them. Ideal place for them is on the side of a hill, but second to that is a somewhat rocky place, and not having that around, little watering sessions many times over one big soak and they do well, they do love water, they just don't want it all at once like that too often.
This got me so emotional all of a sudden, I used to do this with my grandad when I was little, I was lucky to have him in my life till I was 18 years old. I became known as the green Gardner in my family because I used to do stuff like this with my Granddad. The nostalgia hits me hard ahaha.
I am growing a garden for the first time this year. ❤️ I have a Japanese cucumber that taken off, and is producing like crazy. There are so many tiny cucumbers. I originally had it in a pot, but recently got a raised bed and large trellis for it. Earwigs have been nibbling on most of my plants (my poor peppermint especially), but this one seems to be surviving okay. I'm so excited! I love how the plants respond to love and care, and have their preferences. The Japanese cucumber apparently does not like water on its leaves, as it wilts when it's watered from above. So I bought a wand to water at its roots. 😊 I'm looking forward to your future videos and seeing your garden flourish. I hope you have a great harvest!
I also have some blueberry bushes, but they are in their first year. They still kind of look like a few twigs. haha I kind of want to plant some catnip and see if the local bobcats come by to enjoy it. haha
I love watching your videos. it gives me inspiration for when i finally move into my own home, how I can make it nice and if I'm lucky i will get a garden, even a sliver i will be happy where i can do this sort of thing grow things i will enjoy. I have to be careful though as i can't have flowers i always end up sneezing all the time so succulents and cactus are my friends. right now I am living in supported housing due my disabilities but they are helping my to get things on track and sorted so i can live in my own home with floating support which means someone will come in once or twice a week to check in with me and do whatever i need help with. my disabilities are mental and physical but we are slowly getting there with the help i need now. I really need somewhere near a park if i don't have a garden as i will have a support dog by the time i move out as well.
You must have been good in school. Since, I have been watching, Rachel has taught you very well. She is your sensei and you wax on/wax off very well! Yay, Jun!
Between aquariums and raised-bed gardening I feel like you've managed to get into both of the hobbies that I have recently gotten into, and it's amazing to see. I hope your garden thrives! I have cherry tomatoes on the vine already and I'm very excited for them.
I absolutely love your videos, and seeing the subtle language differences come through is so cool! Where I live the task you called "weeding" is "mowing" or "trimming" :)
the birds at 2:35 activated my Need to Bird ID since there was no label, but all i could really get from the call is that they're raptors. so i imported the sound to Merlin and they think it's a black kite; the soundbite was similar but i noticed it was from India, so i thought perhaps there is a subspecies in Japan with a different call accent. and yea!! black-eared black kite (Milvus migrans lineatus), and its soundbites are closer to the calls in the video!
Several people in the comments seem confused that cross pollination between your hot peppers and your sweet peppers will make your sweet pepper fruits hotter. This is not true-it will make the peppers grown from seeds of your current crop (so, next year’s plants) hotter. I would recommend not saving your own seed if you don’t like the heat.
Apparently, if you're making raised beds, you don't need to worry about the weeds in the ground. Laying down a layer or two of cardboard at the bottom before adding soil will take care of them and prevent regrowth. Just a food for thought for the future :)
Remember you can always sprout peppers from the seeds of peppers that taste good. Peppers also grow like crazy once you get them right. And bell peppers come in all kinds of colors.
I've been starting to design raised garden beds for people as a side job, I love this project! I really like the idea of separating the soil types within the bed to be able to have two different pH levels all in the same area. It looks beautiful 😊
Trick I learned from my mother for keeping local animals from munching on your garden: put the shed fur of a dog near it. The smell of the dog will spook most rabbits and deer and keep them from nibbling off the new growth of your plants in spring. My mother had a Chow and spun his fur into rough yarn after brushing him. She then used the yarn to surround her veggie plots. The rough yarn falls apart by late summer, and various other animals will take it for nesting and burrow material.
I built my own raised beds when I was 16... it took a big effort but it worked out. I didn't use any bricks as a foundation, I started below ground and used 6 large stakes that I hammered into the ground about 2 feet deep, then put the sides on, about 2 feet tall. I used brick but as stepping stones between the beds. I grew tomatoes mainly but also cucumbers and some potatoes.
sweet peas, tomatoes and lots of lettuce types are also very easy to grow. I got some sweet peas, forgot the seeds in winter outside, they rained on and actually sprouted in the pot filled with water from the rain and snow, just dunked them in thr ground, planted them 10 to 15cm apart and now its just one ginormous bush of individual plants hanging on to each other (cuz they're crawlers, they sprout those little entangling branches that hold on to everything for their dear life) They really took off around April/May and are now about 40cm from being seeded in March. Idk the specifics like ph value of them but used veggie soil I could buy here locally. Also use eggshell powder and coffee leftover, but be careful with the last one because it can easily spoil and that's kinda bad. just put some in a little hole close to the roots. The sweetpeas are actually giving a ton of harvest despite it being their first year. Hope your harvest is also bountiful, but those bushes may take up to 3 year before they give plenty of blue berries as they're in their growth stage. Also strawberries is something everyone loves and enjoys.

I have this kind of garden in my family back yard. Really nice for gardening!! I'm so happy for you Jun!!
Wow, what are the chances? I was just thinking about making a raised bed when I got back home, and after many months, Jun comes out with a video! Thank you!
So exiting to se your diy house updates 💙
So glad you and Rachel have this home to enjoy. The two of you have worked hard for some time and it’s well deserved.
❤ I always wish we had a word for Komorebi. I love hiking and being outside under the tree canopy bc of this.
*pat pat* "please grow well" I'm going to do this to my plants now when I'm transplanting them. So sweet 🥹🌱❤️
I'm really interested to see those pinkish blueberries grow
Jun, in a raised garden, you want the soil all the way to the top. The soil does settle a bit after awhile so you want to allow for that settling by initially bringing up the soil to the top. Also, look into no-dig gardening. By cultivating, you're bringing up weed seeds up into the raised bed.
Man massive respect for the bird measures. Id probably try to throw together a scarecrow and call it a day lol
this was so relaxing to watch 😊
I've been watching Jun's Kitchen and Rachel and Jun for a long time, but I had no idea this channel was a thing! YT just suggested it.
You can always bake your neighbours something! ❤
Blueberries love acidic soil!! So make sure the soil around the blueberries has a low pH! Love you Jun!! You and Rachel's home is so beautiful!!!!
Nevermind you're on it!!!
I hope the crows leave the garden alone. I remember Jun and Rachel saying the ones in their yard were really smart.
I love that he uses "he" instead of "it" for his plants
They still kind of look like a few twigs. haha I kind of want to plant some catnip and see if the local bobcats come by to enjoy it. haha
Can't wait to see the update, love this channel vech much
Haku is such a cute and curious cat! ❤️
it's really neat that y'all have this space now to do what you want and plant want you want... some day I'll have something too
Love the garden content :)
So cool to see Jun become comfortable with DIY now.
I needed this chill gardening video today. Thank you Jun! Love watching the garden progress. 🌱
Never clicked so fast on a notification 😂
Same!
It turned out so cute!! I hope y'all have a bountiful harvest~☆
Apparently, if you're making raised beds, you don't need to worry about the weeds in the ground. Laying down a layer or two of cardboard at the bottom before adding soil will take care of them and prevent regrowth. Just a food for thought for the future :)
What a lovely project. Great job building it Jun. :)
It came out beautifully! I hope everything grows nicely!
Your videos are always so peaceful and wholesome ❤. Blessings to all from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷❤️
so nice to see the whole project over multible days
After seeing Haku hopping like that, the next project may need to be a catio for the boys and Miss Pichi
Aww i missed your videos! So happy to see you update. This is awesome!
i like the way you always say 'next!' before each new step
Thanks for sharing! Your videos are an inspiration as a man and husband
Nicely done Jun. love it. Can't wait to see what you add to your garden next year.
It's going to be so cool to see the progress! I hope everything grows nice and big and strong!
Good job Jun,watching you is so relaxing
such a good idea to put a frame around it, well done
I’m gardening this year, so of course I’m interested in YT videos about it! Preparing beds is always more work than you thought, right?
パプリカ = red bell pepper (and ピーマン = green bell pepper). in english. paprika is the name of a spice powder made from dried red peppers.
Jun and his golden hands never dissappointed 👏🏻
sweet peas, tomatoes and lots of lettuce types are also very easy to grow.
I think Haku approves of the new addition to your garden. 👍
