Nick nolte is the Absorbing Man. Very different origin than the comics but a very interesting addition to this film which was kind of a surprise to me when the first came out.
Your reaction is so interesting. I think this movie may have been extremely ahead of its time. Watching the film again with you guys really makes me appreciate it a lot more than when I first saw 20 years ago. The Hulk dog scene in particular is something that many comic book movie fans absolutely hated. I think if this movie came out today with a bit of updated CG and a slight color change on the Hulk in particular, I think he would have looked a little bit more real and could have really worked today. A few different editing choices and comic book panel transitions removed and the central theme of Bruce Banner's trauma could have worked very well with today's audience. This movie got so much hate when it was first released and I was definitely one of them. We didn't particularly like it all too much but like I said after rewatching it with you today I see it very differently.
I think some of the writing and performances in this are highly underrated ngl. The film has its problems but it’s very emotionally impactful. Bruce’s childhood trauma from the comics and general psychology is represented really well here.
I really like the exploration of Bruce's trauma tbh. It's just the acting that throws me off. Like, I see what they're going for, but the performances are ultimately what bring this movie down for me.
I never understood why it was *so* panned. Not only were the performances solid, there's a lot of really amazing and creative cinematography. Not all of the choices worked out, but I always admired that it took those swings.
That's why this version is my favorite the other ones he got worn down even if he was angry. This one he only stops when what he needs to do is over with
I've always regarded this one as a comic masterpiece. The psychological depth that Ang Lee put in, instead of generic action, was mindblowing. I really hope to see an Eric Bana Hulk-cameo in the future, he deserves so much more
@@gaba-goo3733 Same, I got nightmares of the first X-Men movie so my parents were aware of what I watched. Hulk was a mature test some years after X-Men and some scenes were so raw that I understood why I hadn't seen LotR yet by that time 😂 I also love the depiction of Bruce as a boy playing war with his toys as reaction to his intimidating father. I did the same and remember that I looked at my dad if he would pick it up, but he didn't 😅 We're having a better connection today
Those images of Hulk and his dad fighting in cloud and that TAKE IT ALL!! scene still remains as some of the most badass moments in all of comic book movies.. amazing
Same, I got them for my bday at 5 years old, and this movie scared me in 2003! It's crazy It's 20 years old and is so fresh. Also it was 1983 if you count 20 years back from 2003. Insane.
I love how painful they made the transformation look and feel, The close up of Bruces face 10:42 as hes screaming in agony combined with the music just hits. Also the last scene where he just lets out all his emotional trauma which emits unthinkable levels of gamma 40:01 shows us the true power of hulk and that he can literally never stop getting stronger.
I appreciate what Ang Lee was going for, he was trying to do for the Hulk what Christopher Nolan did for Batman, ground the character and give him a lot of psychological realism… I hope a new Hulk movie tries again some day because Hulk really is a psychologically interesting character
I love so many aspects of this Hulks design, the weight, the movement, the way small ammunition bounces off his impenetrable elastic skin, but my favorite is his color. While all the other Hulks lowered the contrast on his green color, THIS Hulk has a very vibrant florescent green!!
This has been the best showcase of Hulk’s powers in all of the movies he’s in. I don’t think I’ve seen him run once in all 6 MCU Movies he’s been in. This movie made me love Hulk.

an underrated movie with a great visual comic book style, the only problem i have with this movie is the ending that is so dark it's hard to see what's happening.
In the commentary of this movie in the bonus feature, they say they tried to figure out if they should have these scenes how dark or not and asked different people on that opinon and everyone answered differently so it was a hard thing to figure out that couldn't really be helped in that situation. 🤷 They did try though. Some said they didn't have any trouble with how dark it was while some did have..
The first marvel movie i saw twice in theaters. It was so unique, artistically made and fun. Felt like a authentic comic book roller coaster ride. I appreciate the moments it takes the psychological beats and music really making you feel like you were descending into loss of control of his rage... so awesome.
I really liked how they showed other aspects of his powers, not just strength. His speed, his huge jumps and the way he became more powerful the angrier he got was great, and hasn’t really been shown since.
Honestly the more I think about this movie, the more I appreciate it. A lot of the Hulk comics really delve into the dark trauma side of the story with Bruce's father. In fact one of the more recent Hulk runs directly tied Hulk to hell and the "devil" of Marvel aka The One Below All. Great reaction and if you want another early proto Marvel movie, watch Man-Thing. It's not good but I think it would be a fun reaction
This movie is greatly under-appreciated but if you really think about it, this the most accurate representation of how the Hulk works, truly showing how he gets stronger and slightly bigger the angrier he gets; proof of it is how he handles Tanks like it’s nothing and then releasing and insane amount of Gamma because of how angry he gets from remembering all of his life’s trauma
Hulk was the Incredible Hulk origin story that we didn't know we needed at the time. Our attention spans hadn't matured yet. (and the gamma dogs/final battle were... two chooses???) But overall, as an origin story that shows off the powers of the Hulk, it hasn't been done better.
As many have already said, I really liked this movie because of the psychological aspect. The trauma of not just Bruce but also his father, of Betty and her dad, all mingled up into a gaint green rage monster. Ang Lee actually did the mocap for Hulk, I love that so much. A director so dedicated to his view he puts himself into that space.
I feel like this version actually does get the overall mass right, but Hulk's vocals aren't limited to roars and growls. He may not be the definition of intelligent, but he is able to speak. And I also love the way they actually animated the bullets bouncing off his skin.
I highly recommend John and Coy watching Marvel animated films as well, especially Hulk Vs. Wolverine, Hulk Vs. Thor, Planet Hulk and Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme.
They did a phenomenal job with the casting of the younger versions of David Banner and Thunderbolt Ross in the Flashback scenes. Of course, Sam Elliott really nailed his role in this movie! Also, with Josh Lucas (who plays Talbot), Hollywood gave him a shot at being a CHARISMATIC LEAD in a straight action movie, Rob Cohen's Stealth (2005). That movie, oddly enough has been compared to Top Gun (which you mentioned here :). I would love for SOMEONE to finally make a reaction to that movie! COULD YOU please do a reaction to that 2005 movie?
Other than turning him into a giant in order to show "The angrier the Hulk gets, the STRONGER THE HULK GETS", the movie stuck really close to the comics. The biggest changes - renaming Brian and Rebecca Banner David and Edith, and renaming his adopted family Krenzzler instead of Walters. Also, as a sufferer of Multiple Personality or Dissociative Identity Disorder, there's actually more than one Hulk running around in Bruce's head, each with varying levels of strength and Intelligence. Savage Hulk is the strongest but least intelligent, Joe Fixit is the meanest but rather mid-range in everything, Professor is the smartest but lacks the other Hulk's ability to increase his strength, and Devil - the Immortal Hulk - is the toughest since he literally cannot die.
I was a huge Hulk fan as a kid. This was the first movie my dad took me to see in theaters. I was 5 years old. I don't remember much of it, probably because I fell asleep. but I do remember parts of it! lol
40:04 gooosshh the chills in this scene when hulk screamed "take it all" the incredible hulk film is how badass the hulk really is, but hulk 2003 man I love this film
The hulk dogs are actually called Dogs of War. They were two versions in the comics, the robot ones that served Maestro in the future and then the gamma versions in the present day.
Critics and die hard Marvel fans have named this The Worst Hulk Movie Ever Made, but I think it's pretty impressive in scale and storytelling. Originally, Eric Bana and Lou Ferrigno were going to reprise their roles as The Hulk VIA CGI, where they were going to have cameos in SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME. Unfortunately they were cut from the movie. Development for the movie began in 1990, with Joe Johnston and one time, Jonathan Hensleigh, were considered for directing before Ang Lee and James Schamus were brought on board. Jonathan Hensleigh, John Truman, JJ Abrams, Michael France, Zak Penn, Michael Tolkin, David Hayter, Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski wrote different drafts of the script between 1997 and 2002. David Duchovney, Billy Crudup, Steve Buscemi, Jeff Goldblum, and Johnny Depp were considered for the title character until Eric Bana was cast.
The Gamma dogs appeared in hulk comics (Dogs of War, Incredible Hulk (Vol. 2) #14) about 3 years before this film therefore yes it is a comic thing. This film is still the most faithful adaptation in live action and while it has aged quite a bit.. i still love it!!
Nick Nolte was magical in this movie. Basically, he played Nick Nolte from Nick Nolte's mug shots if Nick Nolte's mug shot was a cartoon villain. Pure magic.
This hulk was good. It had issues in that third act…..but the comic book style filming/editing with the panels on screen, the way hulk as a character was represented, the PHYSICS of the hulk and how he interacts with the world STILL HOLDS UP (especially the “tank wrestling match”) the scene of hulk in the mirror with Bruce just was the chefs kiss to me. “PUNY HUMAN.”
His dad is Absorption man one of hulks enemies and Hulks anger is endless. My dad told me he can breathe underwater the angrier he gets the bigger he grows he can be in space. I honestly like the way this hulk spoke and he wasn’t always on a rampage. Bruce was reliving his memories through Hulk’s eyes, the military attacks him, he’s of course pissed tf off. When Hulk said puny human that was hulk basically saying “We tried your way I’m taking over now” until he saw Betty.
*"I knew I was doing a father's work, fulfilling a father's mercy. But then she surprised me. . . It was as if she and the knife. . . Merged. And in that moment, I took everything that was dear to me, and transformed it into nothing more than a memory."* *"Punny human."* "You think you can live with it? Take it! *TAKE IT ALL!!"* My favorite lines.
Funny enough this movie as child made me afraid of the Hulk 20 years later I literally just watched this on SyFy at my brother's & aunt's house on Sunday
saw it in theaters when i was 15 and 20 years later this movie still makes me feel the same way such a great film up there with the batman and joker and watchmen, this is cinema.

Fook them haters
Would you call them die hard fans if they trash a great lore movie 🤔 loved it and how it was presented.
Wait, 2003 hulk was going to be in no way home?
This is the real Incredible Hulk, I like how the angrier he gets the bigger he gets too
I love the quiet “woah” you two give when Bruce gets hit with rvs initial gamma rays
I really love they explored hulk in this especially his quiet moments. Really loved him exploring the lands as a kid
My dad took me to see this in theaters. It was my sixth birthday, and I’ve loved this movie ever since
Nick Nolte was magical in this movie. Basically, he played Nick Nolte from Nick Nolte's mug shots if Nick Nolte's mug shot was a cartoon villain. Pure magic.
My dad and I have a tradition of re-gifting this dvd every year for either Christmas or our birthdays. 😂
really underrated
This movie was the shit when i was a kid😅
Same man i was always lovin how dark it was😂😂 still do
My favorite Hulk Movie, all star cast across the board, thanks Y’all
I've long loved this movie and never understood the hate it got.
Honestly, it is my favorite Hulk film.
I loved this movie growing up, its the first time Ive seen any of it for years
I love John’s energy so much and Tara’s sense of humor and personality, it’s such a joy when I see these two paired up for a reaction!!
Early 2000s where golden for movies and video games for comics.
It's crazy Ang Lee MO Capped the Hulk himself.
Those "flea" hopping segments were just epic.
I also liked the comic panel stuff.
Funny how they both recognised Edith but didn't know where from and Tara is wearing a stranger things T Shirt which she plays Karen Wheeler haha
This was the hulk when I was a kid.
This my favorite Hulk movie even though people shit on it 🤷♂️
I’m loving Ms Tara Erickson so much everytime she pops up. Also. This might be my favorite ring that bell so far!
26:12 I get chills from different points of the film, but this scene is always chilling for me and so tragic. The Hulk.
One of my all time favorite Marvel characters! 💚
That music takes me back to my childhood
I loved how this movie showed how fast Hulk during desert scene!
"You know what scares me the most? When it comes over me, and I totally lose control....I LIKE IT."
- Bruce Banner/The Hulk
This movie is incredibly underrated. It’s so good. It’s a shame there was never a sequel.
@@GokuT24 you mean 2008.. and yeah it sure seems like it by how similar they are
His dad is Absorption man one of hulks enemies and Hulks anger is endless.
This is my guilty pleasure film. Lol. 😅
This is honestly one of my top 5 favorite marvel movies. I get it's a little weird, but I love it
*"I knew I was doing a father's work, fulfilling a father's mercy. But then she surprised me. . . It was as if she and the knife. . . Merged. And in that moment, I took everything that was dear to me, and transformed it into nothing more than a memory."*
*"Punny human."*
"You think you can live with it? Take it! *TAKE IT ALL!!"*
My favorite lines.
Nice
Funny enough this movie as child made me afraid of the Hulk 20 years later I literally just watched this on SyFy at my brother's & aunt's house on Sunday
Hulk 2003 I Literally Just Watched this on USA
Loved How the way Hulk gets bigger depending of his anger
This movie was so ahead of its time, a character driven drama disguised as a comic book movie
My favorite Hulk version, he is so cute, and the CGI was so realistic and good for it's time.
this is the best movie version of the Hulk, and im willing to die on this hill. I love the idea that he gets stonger/larger the angrier he gets.
saw it in theaters when i was 15 and 20 years later this movie still makes me feel the same way such a great film up there with the batman and joker and watchmen, this is cinema.
Literally the only Hulk film that follows the angrier he gets, the stronger he gets. Edit: 3D re-release, who's with me?
A good film. How it was directed and the reception is very similiar to Man of Steel.
