In 2024, this lineup is a story of broken friendships and lineups. Camu Tao ("Cam-ooh, Tay-oh") died in 2008 El-P and Aesop Rock haven't seen eye to eye or worked on each other's projects since he died. That's not coincidence . Crazy since Aesop was signed to El's label from 2001 to 2008. This song has DJ BIG WIZ on Co-production and scratches. BIG WIZ was 1/3rd of Hail Mary Mallon plus Aesop's tour DJ until one day when Rhymesayers Entertainment told him "we don't need three people in the group anymore".
I never figured out what went down between El-P and AES, but I imagine it had something to do with their business arrangement with Def Jux. I get the feeling El-P leveraged some of AES’s music rights and it created some problems for him trying to figure out how to move beyond the label closing, but I really don’t know. Those are details they usually don’t disclose
@@damienperry5758the one thing people usually bring up is the posthumous release of Camu’s album since El-P wanted to bring it to the world, but allegedly Aes saw it as making a buck off of Mu. This is however all speculation and maybe some truth but I don’t really know for sure that’s just what I’ve read a few times. I guess both were grieving in different ways.
@@damienperry5758I don't think music rights was an issue because even back in the early 2000s El-P had said in magazine interviews that part of being signed to Def Jux got you 100% rights to all your masters once leaving, which explains why the likes of Rjd2, Murs and even Aesop have mostly re-pressed or re-uploaded their Def Jux releases under different labels, if not just independently.
@jeffp.9369 I don’t know what happened, I just assumed it was something related to the label going defunct. I had no information to base my assumptions on, other than the fact that it happened around the time the label went belly up
Ok ok ok I'l chime in. You know we love Aes, but now that we've had a taste of El-P I'd be game for some Run the Jewels. Where to start? For funsies, the opening track: "Run the Jewels" off the the first RTJ album of course! I'd also be down for tracks off the Aes + Rob Sonic "Hail Mary Mallon" collab

I'll take HMM suggestions any day of the week. There's been a lot of talk about El-P in the discord lately. I'll definitely be takin a closer look
EL-P is a genius and so is Rob. I’m always pushing more to react to their music.
@@TherealnoshoesEl-P is great; and so is Run the Jewels. I like Rob also, but his stuff starts sounding samey to me after a while.

Aesop started moving away from multi track vocals with this EP in 2005.
