Nothing to re-write, nothing to apologize for: from start to finish, the 1995 adaption was poetry in motion...perfected!

I love love this adaptation. It's the best of all other P&P ever made. :)

I also like adaptation that was made to present the scene at Pemberley when Caroline Bingley talking to Elizabeth about the militia and giving hints about Wickham, (although she did not actually mention his name, according to Jane Austen's original.) In the book, Georgiana's uneasiness can be shown with descriptive narration, but to be visually seen as a performance, I think this team did an excellent job in connecting that plot with Georgiana's love for music. It had good effect, too!

i think the 1995 version is the most faithful one. especially re clothes, hair styles, lack of makeup (though they did use a bit), and excellent acting. at least it's not like the keira version where it looks like a bunch of victoria's secrets models with 21st cent. makeup and hairdos wearing clothing styles that span a few hundred years!

For me, it was the looks. The way those lead actors acted with their eyes and the way the film team captured that was just wow.

I wish Davies could rewrite "that scene" as well. I re-watch the series again and again hoping that somehow there will be more to the engagement scene the next time. I always think, "we go through all this just for... THAT?" Especially disappointing when you realize there was much more dialogue between Darcy and Elizabeth in the book at the end. I also would have given anything to see Mrs. Bennet's reaction to the engagement and her simpering to her new son-in-law to be.

i would have liked to see something of their life together at Pemberley. I watched Death Comes to Pemberley, but I truly disliked both leads. They were not Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, very disappointing.

I used to feel the same way for a long time about this 2d proposal. But then suddenly (perhaps it was just my reconciliation with the fact :), I thought - it could be this way! :) I mean they both are actually proud people - Lizzie too, to some degree. So it could be like that, as they are both overcoming themselves to finally open up.
I do agree however about the delicious dialogue between D & E at the end of the book - pity to have it missing here. Mr Davies was so determined to follow the cinematic rule "once the guy gets the girl, drop the curtain". Anyway, I think he's a genius. Such an inspiration that he gave us with P&P.. Ahh.. :)

Davies DID fail in this scene. And this scene was why I wanted to watch the movie! The scene in the book is very unsatisfying, because JA did not like to write mushy stuff, but at least after the proposal they proceed to have a deep intimate conversation, and you could imagine them walking arm-in-arm, very warm and satisfying (even tho Elizabeth can't see the happy expression on Darcy's face because she's looking away!). But in Davies' scene, after the transaction they just trot down the lane, keeping their distance as they had done for the previous five hours/10 months.

I agree that this scene could have been better -- I think it's one of the flattest scenes in the series -- but it doesn't break the rest.

It was excellent and my favourite but it still missed the most important point. After reading Darcy's letter, Elizabeth is not only made aware of the value of his comments, but of how far from she was from what she believed. She had allowed herself to indulge in prejudice, from which she had flattered herself she was completely free, purely because her pride had been hurt. This was a self revelation she found very uncomfortable, and in a desire to correct herself and make amends, she begins the journey to falling in love with Darcy. She in fact goes from a strong physical attraction to a stronger emotion based on understanding of herself, and him.

OMG that would be awesome to see Mrs. Bennet's "simpering" as you put it!
I agree with Davies(and you) about the second proposal. It's so anti-climatic.

      Naah
She always had that attraction...both had...so their personalities Clash
Both family bound..intelligent..vulnerable...bold..clear about their life partners..and intent on moulding the other one to see reason so that
      They come together...
The places they meet..thrown together...brings in good reason to
      understand human
      Fallibilities...😀😂😃

I'm just curious what Jane Austen would think of her writings being adapted to film and TV if she were alive today. I wonder if she would like those adaptations or not, or if she would feel if they got it right.

I think the props and details probably could have been a little better researched and more carefully selected to make sure they weren't getting varieties of flowers that literally didn't exist yet. And the mistake like the pen. But that's just a byproduct of the fact that this was made in 1995 before anything other than dial-up was really wide spread even in America. If there was a way to digitally take this entire series and then correct the props that would be the best possible version of Pride and Prejudice. :)
I think the director is absolutely right that Elizabeth helping Georgiana at the piano and her looking up at Darcy with that look of admiration is really the point at which she falls in love with him. Because that subtle smile he gives basically shows that this is what he wants he wants her and Georgiana to be good friends, he wants to sit there and listen to his sister play. That this snapshot is the life he's trying to offer her. And that's little smile back from her is like "okay I get it." It's not a full-on proposal but it's that sort of subtle reassurance that makes him dashing off to London to save poor Lydia from her own stupidity make so much more sense if a scene like this had happened first.
His impression of this moment would also make the Gardeners assumptions about him while he is in London makes so much more sense. If this look had passed between them first Darcy's taking it as "she's basically told me she loves me, this works. I just have to fix this issue with wickham. Put Jane and Bingley back together and then she'll say yes."
If this look had happened first Darcy's Behavior giving The Gardener's such confidence that his running off to London had been done with Elizabeth knowledge and consent. That's why Mr Gardner finally gives in and doesn't pay to fix the problem and let's Mr Darcy do it. Setting up Mr Gardner with the whole borrowed feather situation.
Darcy's behavior in London leaves the gardeners with the belief that he and Elizabeth had talked about what he was going to do. She had agreed to it and then sent him off to do it. The impression the Gardeners are working under makes the difference. Darcy's essentially leading them to that conclusion to obtain their cooperation, because he is actually doing it without expressly telling Elizabeth what he's going to do. And he doesn't want them spilling the beans. Darcy wants Elizabeth to love him for him not for what he did for Lydia.
If this scene had actually happened at pemberly in the book it would make the rest of Darcy's actions make a lot more sense. So I'm glad the adaptation went this way.
The way he resolves the whole Wickham thing also leaves me with the idea that Mr Darcy probably fixed up Mr Bingley's oldest sister's marriage to Mr Hurst.

3:35 Do not worry. Charles Bingley proposed to Jane Bennet off camera. So did Darcy and Elizabeth. It matches. It creates a further mystery. The effect is all there. The effect is the entire epic screenplay. A classic beyond classics and beyond words! 😊

the piano scene troubles me a lot. though she is very fine, I can´t find her in the book. Darcy+Georgiana invited Lizzy at lampton for dinner at pemberly the day before they intended to leave - for playing+singing. but Lizzy and the Gardiners went there the next day after breakfast, in the morning, maybe lunchtime. there was no piano-scene - only the awkward questiones by Miss Bingley. the following day Lizzy recieved the letter from Jane which called her back urgently. and she asked darcy to apologize for not coming in the evening. so, shouldn´t screenwriter Davies date the piano scene in the next day, without apology to Miss Darcy for not coming+singing?

Because I believe this scene was added to give the story depth and was no in the book
