Awesome video! I have tried quite a few of these lenses as well. For my contax set I opted for the Zeiss Classic 21mm f2.8 zf.2 since it is only about $400-600 yet still fits right in with the rest of the contax lenses. I also got a Zeiss Classic 15mm f2.8 for a great price - the rest I would get contax but the classic zf2's are a great option to safe cost on the wide angle primes with no quality loss.

I have the Canon FDn 20mm 2.8 which was one of the best for photography when it was new in the early 1980´s, it is not that good at large apertures, but from aperture 5.6 to 11, it is very good. The Contax Zeiss Distagon 18mm 4.0 T' was popular among advanced photographers.

Yay, another video on vintage lenses from Caleb! These are invaluable videos... Literally 😂
So it's nice to see these lenses compared directly to make informed purchases. I feel like Contax produces an image that is too modern, so there are many alternatives for way cheaper. And Olympus has a halo of being the fastest vintage 20mm-ish lens, so in my opinion it's not very practical. But I was never the one known for being a very practical person either, so naturally I placed bids on both of those lenses when they came up for auction 🌚
Luckily, there were people more reckless with their money than me, so l was saved from spending an exorbitant amount of cash on old stuff 😅

Also, Caleb, do you plan on making a video on your Zuiko set? I remember, you've already mentioned that in one of your comments, but I can't seem to find it.
And one more thing, do you have Contax 55mm 1.2 in your sights? It's a fascinating lens and a real unicorn, so I think it fits neatly within the kinds of lenses you review 😄

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video, I had fun making it. I plan on doing a video on my Zuiko set I just haven’t had the time to go out and get outside B roll with the lenses, I’ve been so busy with work and it’s been so hot and humid outside lately. I would love to add a 55 1.2 since I have the 85 1.2 but prices are so ridiculous right now

@@calebbrunkow Watching the video for the second time and now I'm feeling like an idiot for asking about your plans to review the Zuiko set, since you talk about that in the video for like a minute -___________-
Well, I hope that the weather gets milder and you'll find inspiration to shoot 🤞

For my opinion the best 20mm lens is the Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20mm, both the f4 and the f2.8 versions.
I don't know why you exclude it here .This was a big fault.

I have noticed over the years that Canon seems to round up or down their numbers. I never noticed until using original 1980s EF zooms on non Canon bodies like a Sony. The lens says its a f3.5-4.5 but it actually is a f3.2. So I'm thinking maybe your Canon 20mm is really a f2.9 or f3 or the Nikkor 20mm is a f2.6 pr f2.4. Anyways interesting video.

for me the contax-zeiss is not so "vintage" than other. in the 90' i clearly remember that 21mm was for me and some others the best from is class. I love and use a lot the new-fd series above 28mm. Under that i always choose modern glass first for flaring-control and i like a lot of sharpens across the frame especialy for UWA shots, quite hard ton find in vintage glass.

    • @calebbrunkow
      @calebbrunkow  5 місяців тому

The Zeiss definitely has more of a modern look than the others. The FD 28 is a great lens as well, personally I prefer the 28 f2 SSC over the NFD

Leica was working with Minolta from around 1972 for their glass.
This continued for about ten years.
    Minolta didn't produce a 19mm and the earliest 20mm was 1977. The Minolta Rokkor 20mm f2.8.
In the attached video Justin Phillips talks about the history and the 24 mm and can it cut it with the Leica's.
Great video thanks for all the hard work.
