    Me, someone who has been drawing for over 10 years but not actively: still at level 1 🤡
    It's my fault tho, I don't draw that often. I used to draw almost everyday when I was in middle school but as adult responsibilities come, I haven't been able to draw much - mostly because of lack of motivation. I'm lucky if I do one complete piece every 3 months, and I don't even do simple shorter studies or sketches in between, which is what I'm trying to improve :(
    Edit: after watching this video I realized I should start studying art more seriously and I started practicing poses everyday, going for 1 week for now :D Currently at level 1 and I'll probably go to level 2 once I finish a couple of sketchbooks (which until now had been extremely dificult - I never finish my sketchbooks)

      5 months is like day one man don't worry. In 5 years you'll be 5 years more experienced with 5 years more skill under your belt. Some of the old pros have been drawing/painting for 30-40 years and still going (and it probably took them 10 years to get even close to their peak skill level). You probably can't get "actually good" at anything in only 1 year (I've read 1 30+ year artist say it took them years before they could draw people).

    I'm an artist at level 3 and you just gave the BEST advice I have ever heard: observe your reference for 5 minutes before jumping in, and pay attention to details such as lighting, texture, and how shadows form. I always felt like at one point in the study I just start copying the reference without really understanding what I'm doing. Those extra 5 minutes at the beginning definitely made a HUGE difference as I am now consciously making drawing decisions for a reason, instead of just drawing what I see.

    quick tip! before starting a drawing, always plan ahead... i know it sounds like common sense, but hear me out!
    if you want your drawing process to be as clean as possible, always do a sketch or doodle your ideas on a separate sheet if youre doing traditional and if youre doing digital yknow.
    it helps a lot having an idea in your head, and if not, youll just keep erasing and erasing until you dont wanna draw anymore!

    • @corncobbob2326
      @corncobbob2326 Рік тому

      I agree and get what you mean. I'm in the middle of the planning process right now. I have some ideas but there are still some gaps to fill in before I dare hold the pencil. Forgive the length of this comment pls:
      May I go to you for tips? Any website/sources that has all kinds of poses, especially action-related ones? Reason for this is bc my goal is to make 2 sketches minimum where one or both of them involve combat, especially martial arts and maybe even hitman weapons. However with my other goal (this is a bit out of context)... since my goal is to make the character look bad ass and hot, I'm also looking for a pose that would allow their abs to be fully seen as well as their booty even if it's just a bit of it. One's booty can be seen from a side or back view but both views limit the abs/torso from being fully seen.
      I'm looking for a pose that shows BOTH ASSETS so it's obvious that they're muscular but also thicc in some places (think Vi from Arcane/League of Legends and VTuber BuffPup which I'll prob edit this comment with a vid/pic). BUT I'm tryna make both seen WITHOUT having to draw in a lewd way so no sexy poses. I've seen art and pics online where it's generally like "oh this person/character looks cool" and then the comments/replies to those posts have someone zooming in/thirsting over the thicc and/or muscular parts of said character/person. Like I'm tryna make them look hot in a subtler way where the viewer is the one that ends up "looking respectively".

      @@corncobbob2326 I completely get it! forgive my late reply, but pinterest is an amazing place to start. I find a lot of muscular kind of poses, exactly like what you're describing! the only issue is you definitely have to get your main page in tune with your tastes! I'll give you a few links of what you're looking for.

    If you try drawing something you're interested about, your brain will search and save information about this thing, based on what you see during your day. You just have to draw a lot what you really want, and leave the job of learning for your brain. I've been drawing basically what i want, in the way I want like that, for past 4 or 5 years, and now I can draw anything from my imagination (with 5 point, or any other perspective). Now I'm working on the quality and technical side of my drawings. Master Kim Jung Gi also was studying pretty much like this.
    And also like him, I don't need any sketch or construction lines to draw. But as it comes to quality and technique, Kim Jung Gi was astronomicaly unmatched🤌
    And taking your time to observe objects, photos and anything else (as Marc and also Jung Gi were saing) will drasticaly improve your drawing for sure, and it is the best way to build visual library.

    • @Horsaz
      @Horsaz 3 роки тому +22

      This might seem like a really dumb reply but best thing you can do is to just start. xD
      I've kind of adopted this mindset, I'm like a car and it always takes the most energy for a car to start its engines but when its on the move it doesnt expend too much energy. Point is, starting is always hard and even if you sit down to just draw a single line at least you drew that single line. Not drawing at all is worse.
      I can also recommend to set a schedule for yourself and make sure to include breaks and at least one whole day of rest.

      Consistency and accountability. Try to make 1 drawing a day and post it to your social media, to your friends to see or a group you belong, it doesn't matter what you draw, but should be better if it's something that you like. In a year you will have produced so much work that it stays as a habit, then you can start taking your time with your art. Nothing comes easy, just keep drawing.

    • @DonVigaDeFierro
      @DonVigaDeFierro 3 роки тому +2

      Ye, as others said, just draw. Overthinking is nothing more than a fear of failure. But failure is not a death sentence, or proof or your worth as a person. It's a chance to learn. So, stop overthinking and just doodle anything on the page.
      It helps picking a large brush (or a crayon) and making very wide marks with your topic in mind.
      Then, take notes on what you're thinking while you draw and answer these questions: "Why I dislike this drawing?", "What do I really want to draw?", "How can I turn this doodle into something good?", "How can I turn this doodle into what I really want to draw?"
      It's also valid to just throw away the doodle and draw something different. You can also pick a reference related to what you want to draw, and draw it instead, with the intention of returning to your original idea with more knowledge.
      The idea is, yeah. Failure sucks, but it ain't too bad. Just try to go back a few steps to regain your confidence and keep drawing, because if you don't, I will haunt your bathroom.

    I think I'm around level 2 when it comes to using reference, and have tried some of those tips you mentioned for level 3, but I want to try going back and practicing for a while starting at the beginning from this method. I've been drawing for almost all my whole life, and has been drawing almost everyday ever since. But the pandemic came in and my skills went "weeeee 📉📉📉", plus being so burnt out and seeing all these artists around the same age as I am improve drastically around a month or two made my confidence in art go down quickly and made me feel inferior about how much knowledge I have on art. Made me feel like I was just doing art desperately just to try to see improvements while not enjoying it as much.
    Watching your videos is a spark of hope. Made me realize how much I've observed around the open environment around me back then, and making it a part of what goes here and what isn't. Observation is why I improved at art the most two years ago, and I'm going to do it again. Going back to square one, and while my ego is probably bummed about it, I just feel like I couldn't do anything to learn with my current situaton haha. Thanks for these videos, good sir, I may still not draw as much now, but your videos and knowledge gave me hope to improve and rekindled back my mindset of wanting to learn from other people that improved instead of feeling down about it.

    Can we be friends? Haha seriously though, ever since I was a kid I’ve liked to draw following references and trying to copy a subject, sadly I only did it on and off and have had trouble keeping consistent; almost two years ago though, something unexpected happened, I did a semi realistic full color drawing that amazed myself, and it was like unlocking a new level, without going through any proper studies, so I am now at an awkward position of “I can copy things but I don’t really know how to draw”, I recently discovered this channel and I have big hopes that I can learn from it and maybe caught up with all the off time I’ve had.
    Sincerely, thank you for sharing, keep it up! 💖

    Hearing a lot of this is great for me, I used to draw a lot when I was in my 20s but after I drew a handful of stuff and posted them in a forum I got a lot of negative feedback on how you shouldn't copy from other drawings, pictures because it's not going to give you any real unique work of art, nothing I can call mine. So even though it was all from refence and I was got into a huge slump because I was very proud of how good it came out and how it looks a lot like the original. Needless to say, I lost my drawing tablet and I didn't really want to go back to traditional style because digital felt so good.
    Maybe one of these days I'll stop watching videos and pick back up the pen, after I get a new drawing/graphics tablet.
    I love the videos, I love the positive information and it's so much stuff that I've needed to hear.
    Thank You Marc, you're starting to get my drawing urges back and I love art

    Kim jung gi: huh
    (He's already drawn everything so much that he can draw almost anything)
    Also remember that there always are artists better than u whom you can study from in any aspect of art

      Well, I'm pretty sure that he had to study a lot to have such huge "visual catalog" on his mental and muscular memory and that's the point Marc said, it's not for professional artists but for beginners that ilude themselves thinking they can do like in your example Kim Gung Gi, without learn or pratice A LOT before that.

    • @johntthompson3687

      I think the joke went over my head but, I'm pretty sure Kim Jung Gi doesn't study from "imagination". From most of his interviews, he said that he observed a lots from almost everything around him, and draw a lots from what he observed.
      For beginner, it's best to build up your visual memory first.

    I'm at level2 atm and pretty happy that i can finally do anatomy poses without a reference

    This thing was holding me back from doing numerous fanarts and drawing ideas when i cant find the right ref
    Dont get me wrong, i still practice from refs ofc
    Still somehow feels combining items and stuff is super hard xd

    Just some notes for when i link this to friends:
    Level 1: beginners. You start by taking shots of different alcohol in order to be able to know what taste good.
    Level 2: with more knowledge in drinks you can now identify the most important factors on the taste of different drinks, you can curate your bar at this point with wines that sell instead of obscure ones no one orders.
    Level 3: practice at this level when you've got the fundamentals down. Or as marc puts it, when you're already a connoisseur capable of identifying subtle variance in wine. Make sure to take a moment to smell the beverage and take small sips to observe it before drinking, so you can make the most out of it's taste.
    Level 4: combine drinks. use your honed observation skills to identify specific things that make the different beverage taste good, so you can take parts of them and skillfully mix cocktails using different drinks.

    I wish there was a manga version of these kinds of tutorials.
    A youtuber who seriously shows the professional manga way in multiple videos, with demos of him working on manga pages from start to finish multiple times.
    There's Akihito Yoshitomi already but, he doesn't do digital art and his videos are mostly in Japanese. Plus he doesn't really teach, it's just demos of him working on his stuff.
    Oh, well.

    • @colinwong8496

      Hmm, I would say if you looking to draw in a manga-like style, it's better to study realism then work on stylizing later. Or at least, that's what I hear. But manga and other stylized works take reality and either remove or modify realistic aspects. More or less, if you know the "rules", then you can better break them. I'm by no means a good artist but hopefully this advice helps!

    • @YTartschool
      @YTartschool  3 роки тому +1

      You can’t draw manga if you can’t draw realistically first ;) This is the first step! Manga is just an art style, easy to mimic if you have good foundations.

    • @eddyalvaross2195
      @eddyalvaross2195 3 роки тому

      @@YTartschool Oh, but I'm well aware that drawing realistically matters first. But to say that the art style is easy to mimic, that I don't really think so. Even with good foundations. Because you know, I'm considering the whole package : the lineart styles, characters, environments, toning and textures, compositions including visual fx, sound fx, panel layouts and eventually painting as well, but also : how to digitally design a professional black/white manga page ready for print from A to Z.
      I checked some One Punch Man pages drawn by Yusuke Murata but couldn't replicate some of the visual fx and screentones he put in it. Seriously, manga is not as easy as you might think. And without the right information at your disposal, you're only there without answers. You have spotted an interesting detail thanks to your observation, but it's not always obvious to find what resources and process lead to the result.
      I for instance was wondering about noise toning but found no tutorial focusing specifically on how the pros use and apply it. Manga at a professional level is no joke. Don't tell me it's easy.

    • @eddyalvaross2195
      @eddyalvaross2195 3 роки тому

      @@colinwong8496 You're perfectly right. And I have studied the fundamentals already for years. I know the list of them and had to completely focus on realism first before stylizing. I understand the importance of that very well. Because that's what the pros recommend. The problem is those "rules" now.
      And sometimes understanding them requires information that is not easy to find on the web.
      So things become a bit complicated with that. Mimicking is also not always obvious.
