4:45 is incorrect, Toronto Island was not man built, that would be the nearby Tommy Thompson Park which is connected to the mainland. It is similar to an island as the connection to the mainland is quite thin and the size of it extends outwards towards the lake. The city dumped massive amounts of construction waste such as rebar, concrete, bricks into the lake and built a park over it. Currently, Tommy Thompson Park is a bird and nature sanctuary for all types of animals. The Toronto Islands were once connected to the mainland by a sand bar, but it got swept away in a massive storm in 1858.

@@louisandchlo He made a mistake. They threw all the soil from excavation into the harbour, and it extended the shoreline out a LOT. But the islands are quite natural!

Loved it! Great job! I grew up near Toronto and visited often when I was a kid. The funny thing is, I never went to Toronto Islands until I was well into my 20's. The harbourfront area was still very industrial and hard to access 40 years ago. Also, when I was growing up, Lake Ontario was quite polluted, mostly due to poor sewage treatment. It really is a paradise now, and the lake water is much cleaner. Glad to see you enjoyed and you must visit my hometown of Kingston, where the Thousand Islands begin - but go in summer!!

The Toronto Islands were not originally man-made. Instead, they were formed hundreds of years ago by lakeside cliffs miles away eroding and the resulting silt gathered in the bay and formed the basis of the islands. However, much of the land where the small regional airport is was reclaimed from excavation debris, as was the Leslie Spit which is entirely man-made.

You should do better research of your commentary. The Toronto islands were NOT created by dumping construction rubble. The islands are natural and one of the reasons that it formed a good natural harbour which was one of the considerations for the British both militarily and commercially. The waterfront WAS extended with rubble dumping, however, and that may be the source of your confusion.
