    Our video is about St. Philoumenos, the guardian of Jacob’s Well. St. Philoumenos was the Igumen of the Orthodox monastery of Jacob's Well near the city of Samaria, now called Nablus (Neapolis), in the West Bank, and was martyred on Nov. 16th,1979. His life is a reminder that martyrdom for Christ is not of the past from the Pagan Roman period, ottoman, or even Communist times, but is a reality even today. The Lord allows for the creation of martyrs, even during these modern times, and preserves their bodies incorrupt and fragrant, thus declaring to us that He is present in our lives even now, performing wondrous works according to His divine will and mercy.
    O Martyr of Christ, pray for us to the Lord that we too may be saved!
    Apolytikion (Fourth Tone)
    At Jacob's Well you were proved well named:
    loving Christ, confessing Him, pouring out your sacred blood.
    Being faithful in small things you were set over great.
    Worshipping in Spirit and in Truth,
    you are now Guardian of the Holy Places forever.

    Coming from a protestant background, and having discovered Orthodoxy online, the internet remains the main source of learning about the true Church and the Saints. Especially since there is not an Orthodox church where I live. My soul hungers for your video teachings. I am very thankful for these videos. All that I learn from your videos I have never heard before. I give thanks to God for you and these teachings.

      Coming from another lifelong protestant, you gotta go to some Divine Liturgies! It took me forever to get up the nerve to go, but it's been life changing for my whole family. My wife and I are getting Chrismated in 2 weeks and my daughter is getting baptized, we're so excited!

      Ohhhhh dear Nancy!!! You should obtain some books perhaps....that describe the life of Saints...i would highly recommend the book of St Silouan the Athonite, written by Archimandrite Sophrony, now St Sophrony the Athonite, who was Disciple of St St Silouan, whilst in Mount Athos. St Sophrony, in later years, established the Monastery of St John the Baptist in Essex, England, in the UK, in 1959. He passed away in 1993. The life of St Silouan the Athonite is a beautiful book!😊

    Thank-you for this beautiful video. When I was Chrismated into the Orthodox Church two years ago, I took the Saint's name as my patron saint. Though I am unworthy of that name, I was drafted into the IDF at the same time as Saint Philoumenos was sent to Jacob's Well. I feel a strong connection to his story, and that of Saint Photine for whose legacy he was martyred. I venerate them daily.

    I was inspired by this story as a newly illumined Orthodox Christian, but looking for more information on the matter, I came to an article that caused doubt in me. It’s titled “The ‘Martyrdom’ of Saint Philoumenos: the anatomy of a modern antisemitic ritual murder libel” by David Gurevich. Now, don’t get me wrong, I believe the Church is the New Israel, and even when I was a Protestant I never accepted Dispensationalism or “Christian” Zionism, but if the article is right the criminal records tell a different story than what is normally told about the martyrdom of the saint. I would like some guidance on this...

    • @Trisagionfilms
      @Trisagionfilms  3 роки тому +6

      I am not an expert on what happened, but I can say this. The Israeli authorities don't want bad press, and from personal experience, I can tell you that they tend to spread propaganda about themselves. He was killed because of that man's hatred for Christians who had attacked nuns in the past, if I am not mistaken. St. Philoumenos was a holy man as well. I wouldn't blindly(and I am not saying you are) believe whatever the Israeli authorities produce. It may sound conspiratorial, but I'm afraid that's how it is. I do think some Orthodox sources exaggerated the story of what happened too. But it is also a fact that his body did not decay until decades later; father Panayiotis saw it with his own eyes. This man proved to be a holy man who was killed because of his beliefs and because the site is owned by the Orthodox and not by the Jews. I hope my answer helps you.

    An interesting video. But I have 3 questions:
    1- Why didn't the video name the assailant and his affiliation?
    2- Why is the flag of modern Greece on the church? Does Greece own the site? If not then what is the point of placing the modern day Greek flag on the church? Wouldn't the flag of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem be more appropriate?
    3- There was no coverage of the local Christians. Are there local Christians? If yes, are they Orthodox? If yes, are they playing any role in this specific church?

    • @Trisagionfilms
      @Trisagionfilms  4 роки тому +9

      Your questions are very good.
      Firstly we couldn't find any information about the identity of the perpetrator and as far as his affiliation I assume you mean his religion? He was a Jew.
      In the holy land you will see the Greek flag quite often along side the flag of the patriarchate of Jerusalem which we did show in this video (You also see the Roman double headed eagle as well) The reason for the Greek flag is that many if not the vast majority of the guardians (monks who oversee the holy sites) are from Greece or Cyprus.
      We did not mention the local population as they play no role in the narrative, we are not sure what the Orthodox population of Nablus is but we are sure a quick google search will tell you. Most of the money that helped build this church probably came from Greece and Cyprus... but a lot of money also came from the Palestinian Government.

      @@Trisagionfilms
      "The reason for the Greek flag is that many if not the vast majority of the guardians are from Greece or Cyprus"
      Are they there in the name of Orthodoxy or in the name of their national country? If you ask me, I am against raising national flags in any Orthodox church or a Holy site. Frankly it saddens me whenever I see acts that politicize Orthodoxy. National politics should be left out of the church.

    • @Trisagionfilms
      @Trisagionfilms  4 роки тому +8

      It is an issue in the holy land... Unfortunately the Patriarchate of Jerusalem has had a traditionally "Greek" ideological stance... it is worse than just waving national flags... We can report that some of the Guardians (not all) are very nationalistic... and it is sad that they are all from Greece or Cyprus... Not allowing the local population to take on a bigger role in their own church which alienates them... It's complicated. There is one native (Palestinian born) Bishop today and hopefully the Patriarchate of Jerusalem slowly stops having a nationalistically centred attitude.
