Iceland is by far one of the most beautiful and unique countries that I've visited. Remember, these are more guidelines than strict laws and I'm sure you'll have an awesome time there. For a full list of restaurant recommendations and attractions check out my article here: www.golocaltips.com/iceland
I live there🇮🇸🇮🇸❤️🇮🇸🇮🇸
Feel free to ask me questions
driving yourself you need to be experienced driver for that all iceland roads are not good all the gravel, mud, snow and all narrow roads
and if you speed you kill your self last 5 year more tourist dies in car crash than icelandic
I live there
Cal McKinley - Go Local the song in the radio is saying
Hello, hey Im looking for my b***h ..., ..., have you seen her?
I put ... cuss I for got the word in the song
And for chists sake don't ignore warning signs at waterfalls, glaciers, and geysers.
And please don't leave your trash in our nature, I can not stress these points enough
Yes dont leave trash
helvitis hommi
Yeah and don't stray off in the mountains if your with a tourist group.
Egill Einarsson OH gyðingar! Þoli þá ekki
Potentially a HUGE thing. But doesn't this conflict with "Don't do tours"? If you go off on your own, you might fall in a hot spring or something!
I'm old. I went to Iceland in the 1960's when it was remote and quaint. Loved it. Went on archaeological expedition to Belize before eco-tourism. Loved it. Lived in France, Spain and in the 50's, and got there on ocean liners. All way cool. loved it. Today, that world is gone! Everyone's loss, but at least I have the memories.
Ned Crouch wow that’s so cool☺️
Aw man id love to hear about how that was
I'm young. I was born in iceland, and I mourn the loss of our cultural heritage. Not only our ancient traditions that got wiped out by christianity, but the commercialization of things considered "icelandic". You can buy keychains with pictures of puffins, hallgrímskirkja (the large church), old gods and runes which now makes them nothing but accessories you wear to tell people you've been to iceland. We mimick the culture of america with none to call our own. Many young people even speak english between one another.
Not to mention, our popular music is just as bad or worse than american pop music.
@@pretz5584 Lol
Our particular brand of paganism was very peaceful. It had no authoritarian edicts about how to live your life and was tolerant of people of other religions, not like the "join our religion or die" brand of christianity that replaced it.
Feminism in our country can be irritating, but the degeneration of our culture lies more with tourism and american media.
Also fuck Denmark.
Those are good memories!!
I live in Iceland, and the waterfalls are really clean. You can drink from them without any harm to you.
You are so lucky i love Iceland i wont live in Iceland but I can't
If something didn't die 30 metres above the fall. 😄 Thanks - rather I buy bottled water or take a tap water. When icelanders don't drink bottled water, why the shops are full of it? And from various producer...🤔
@@AnilKumar-kk9zy you wont and can´t
I would love to move there. It is my dream to come to Iceland
I live in iceland to
Number 8. Don't stop in the middle
Of the road to take a picture
Find a place to park and walk to take pictures
@@blrrosar7617 yes exactly 😊
Dont do that in any country
True, but car behind must have the aproximity to react for some unpredictable situation. So.... in my country when your car hit to the car in front of you. It's your fault.
Yes it's so annoying as a local i see this all the time people are driving and see something beautiful and slam on the breaks even if there is a car right behind them instead of slowly slowing down or just take pictures from the car on the move that's what i do and it's not like the sun is moving fast or the mountains so you don't need to stop
I am from Iceland. I agree. But if I were tourist in Iceland I would go to the Blue Lagoon. I know it is expensive, but it is worth it, it is big experience
Sandra Sif Gunnarsdóttir Yes agree the blue lagoon is amazing
Honestly I went there around 2009 and though it's a great place I recommend the natural hotspring pools that are free to go to and all over the country, there are especially great ones on the west fjords
@@blrrosar7617 yes I agree, I love them too 😊... But personally I am too shy, I need women's room to change my clothes.
Hveragerði thermal river is far more better, a hike and hot water it's pretty good, but even better when it's snowing
I agree with this
I've been to Iceland 5 times (2009, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2019). Love Iceland. Visits before 2017 were MUCH better!. Agree with every caution in this video. Good Job.
Also, buy booze at the duty free store in the airport before you leave it. Spirits are about a 400% mark up in towns. Even liquor stores.
The fines can be 10 times as high as you said...
Satt
sean tellier Radar is very useful to stop idiots. No bullshit.
@sean tellier Bullshit is driving like a maniac.
Cameras are there for a reason
@sean tellier The cameras are there to stop speeding. They want to stop speeders for everyone's safety. If you can't respect that, then you have no right to be on the road behind a wheel.
@sean tellier
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Okay. Let's get this straight. You go to someone else's country and tell them what is and isn't bullshit?
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Here's a question for you: is that the way you behave when you are guest at someone's home? Same thing when visiting a foreign country.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You're the type arrogant asshat who leaves behind piles of shit that the rest of us from the U.S.A. who live/travel/work/are stationed abroad have to deal with. And cleaning up YOUR STINKING SHIT is not only time consuming, but is BORING AS F*CK.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
So here's a thought: how about you STOP BEING A LIABILITY AND AN EMBARRASSMENT to your own country by putting on your big boy panties. When abroad, treat other country's people, their cultures and their laws with the same respect you yourself want?
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
TO EVERYONE ELSE READING THIS:
I sincerely ask that you *PLEASE* forgive the rudeness, as well as the crudeness. As most of you already know, we are ALL ambassadors of our great Country, especially when abroad.
Thank you.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great vid, thanks for the advice. Bonus it is. (Careful about drinking the water, however. Remember there are over 130 frozen water-borne diseases. Many of these will make one instantly ill, others will have an after-having-exited-Iceland incubation period. Those future patients will remember Iceland differently. You should recommend a hand-filter, at least, for non treated water. And, boiling out-door water for 10 minutes will make a more memorable visit.)
@@Qbbur And fill up your bottle with tab water in your room before going to trip, it is as good as bottled water and costs zero ,that saves all that plastic bottles for the nature.
1:20 he'll be fine, I fill my bottle wherever I can when I'm hiking, the water is clean.
You're not gonna die or anything.
Been to Iceland many times and fully agree with this list. Great video. I was lucky enough to go to the Blue Lagoon in 1997 when it was small, further down the road and the changing rooms were fairly basic. I was there with my kids and there weren't many people there. It started to snow on our heads. It was amazing. Went there two years ago and it's a different place. Literally. We sat in the water and drank sparkling wine! Very decadent and quite fun but it was really expensive and pretty artificial.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Completely agree with your assessment of how it's changed.
In 2013, we stopped at Reykjavik, Iceland for a day, on a Trans Atlantic cruise from England to
New York, USA! After viewing the very enjoyable, but quiet town, we went on a bus trip, into the
back country, to see geysers, a 'haunted' area & a bridge, which supposedly connects the two
tectonic plates,i.e. Europe to America! We saw the "Blue Lagoon", but didn't go in. Wonderful experience!
And dont walk on the glacier without guide 1.30 😂
Marcus Bergfeldt true, he's missing the part on dont tour, u NEED tour if going for glacier hike or lagoon ride.
All good tips. I was there in July. Also, don’t shower with your bathing suit on before going into public pools. Gotta put in on after. Heated community pools are ubiquitous, glorious, and much cheaper than Blue Lagoon.
Tip 8: Don’t hike on glaciers without crampons.
Tip 9: Don't try to drive your rental car on glaciers. (Yes, people have tried.)
@@TraustiGeir And read the signs and do as they say, Me and my husband have seen tourist go behind them , but as an Icelander I would never do that. It,s dead seriously.
This is pretty much spot on. The only other thing I would add is to NOT IGNORE WARNING SIGNS. Saw people doing dumb things and getting stuck off road, etc.
People also talk about how expensive it is, but if you play your cards right, it's no worse than NYC or Boston. Alcohol is the worst, so make sure to hit the "happy hours" and you are permitted to bring 1 litre of alcohol (per person) in your checked bag into the country. And opt for Airbnb- much less that a hotel, and we saw the Northern Lights from the one we stayed in near Vík. Traveling with a group will also cut down on costs, especially with car rentals, accomodations, etc.
NYC & Boston are VERY expensive so not a good argument. Nonetheless Iceland is a really cool country.
Dipping in the blue lagoon while it is having a snowfall makes your experience 10x more relaxing. The views in Iceland were really amazing indeed. It did not disappoint though everything there was expensive. Will definitely visit the place again after saving up :)!
I went to Blue Lagoon when they first opened in the morning this past December, not a soul there for a good hour or so and it was totally worth it. By the time we headed out around 11 or so it was packed
Spot on, observations. We traveled there this past year in January (2019), and have made plans to go back to celebrate New Years, there. A separate driving trip is in the planning as well for another future date, and time. Beautiful country, people, and culture.
I’ve been to Iceland and the one of the coolest places ever!
Very good advice. The Blue Lagoon is a total tourist trap, 10-11 should be avoided but the fines for speeding can be much higher.
Just got back from Iceland. Here's a few tip. NEVER. DO. TOURS. My girlfriend and I rented a jeep cherokee and traveled everywhere in the comfort of our own presence. We stopped whenever we wanted too and did whatever we wanted too. The tours are way too expensive and the real magic happens when you actually drive out the tourist spots. Yeah we did visit some tourist attractions but we didn't feel rushed due to the limited time they offer. There was even a time where we were driving and heard about seals being there so we stopped somewhere where a youtuber said seals are normally are and took pictures of them by the beach while no tourist could be seen. Renting a 4x4 is by far your best option. The diesel engine makes gas consumption very slow and car rental for a week is way cheaper than doing one tour a day. We rented through Greem Motion which has the cheapest but reliable 4x4. Also you are incharge of your time. Check out my IG: N7NE_ and see our post and DM me for any questions and recommendations, my girlfriend and I will gladly help
What is the approximate mileage for a gallon of diesel and what is the cost?
We were given two square bottles of water when we boarded Icelandair...they were the only bottles we used for water our entire time around the Golden Circle. Water, water everywhere...all of if to drink.
Local Icelander here. Regarding the don't speed tip. It stands completely true. The fines have recently been increased (trippled or something along that) so that's expensive. I just want to add though that most tourists probably don't realise that driving in Iceland is much more complicated than driving in say, america or denmark. During the summer there are a lot of wild animals crossing the road, even on the mountain paths. During the winter, the roads get terribly icey or snowey. There has been a massive increase in road accident related deaths here the past 5 years and the victims are more or less tourists. Keep your safety in mind and take it slow, it's always worth it.
I loved the blue lagoon. Also had the best most diverse meal in my life there.
This is amazing. We love it. We was there November 2021
Susan and I were there in 2019. We flew over it while going from Barcelona to the US. We had to go back for a closer look. We only had three days so we did take the tour (ring road). If they ever let us back into Europe, we have returned to our usual routing of rentin an apartment for 6 to 8 weeeks. Florence is next.
Water streams are also perfectly safe to drink and sometimes more refreshing than tap water
Literally the only place you'll find dirty water is in the lagoons and rivers just under glaciers and that's the spot you pick to fill your bottle lol. You have to travel some distance away from the glaciers to let the natural filtration system of the nature clean it up for you.
i live in Iceland and its all true you dont need too tip
Pls how can I get there pls I need help
Mohammed Prince go to the airport?

peter lamprou my true successor
What stupid thing to be proud of. Tips are sign of GRATITUD.
1. tipping we don't do, people can get offended by it.
2. True
3. Agreed
4. Roads are horrible, and Also tourists are the worst encounters on the road.
5. 10/11 is a complete rip off
6. Blue Lagoon is also a rip off another one cheaper in the North east "Jarðböðin - Mývatn"
7. Parties on Friday/Saturdays some times thursdays.
I'll be damned if that city square shown under tip 7 isn't Nijmegen in the Netherlands. :)
Yeah just realized I left that clip in haha ya got me :)
#8: Don't walk where signs tell you not to go.
I agree with all the things you mentioned and to add a little to the topic
Don't go off-roading where it is not allowed
And respect all wether warnings.
Traveling on mountain or a glacier can be so dangerous if the weather is bad
The water you filled on your bottle by the glacier is a glacier water but you also find a very good and clean water in rivers coming from springs, like the water at Skogarfoss waterfall and Seljalandsfoss waterfall.
I felt the same way about the Blue lagoon. The secret lagoon was great and cheaper
Really ?? Are you from Iceland one day will vist it Julie
Very nice video, as a person that lives in Iceland I think this list is fantastic for tourists or visitors :)
If i would add additional things , please note that some of the rental cars are stick shift. Some tourist don't know this and many rental cars need to be fixed because of the fact they just have them on the highest gear. We don't fault people for this but I just wanted to warn people so they don't get a huge fine on their vacation.
A stunningly beautiful country
I was like oh I need to see this, but after I saw the video I remembered Iceland is pretty much the same as my country... I live in Norway and switch out a few details and this video is basically
about Norway.
I live in Iceland and I love Iceland❤️
As everybody loves theirs.
Taking a tour is the easiest way to see the country. And plus taking a tour can get you to cool places that you could potentially not find while just driving around.
Wow😮 thank you for sharing your wonderful experience in Iceland😊❤️
I agree Blue Lagoon is over priced but it is a must do, where else can you get this experience. The one major item in my opinion is yes rent a car but make sure to get the windshield insurance. With the types of roads broken windshields are common and very expensive at the end to the rental to fix.
I'm going in April Can't Wait
Hey! That's me standing in the road in your thumbnail. Good memories :)
oh really? awesome man.
Shop @ NETTO if you are doing budget and cooking your own
Also, don't neglect the North and East,
Long drive getting there but worth it,
I came back 2 weeks ago after doing the whole of the #1 ring road plus detours in a 4x4 (amazing drives through the snowy mountains)
Also I filled bottles from mountain waterfalls and didn't drop down dead, it's fine, don't use places such as in this vid though,
Don't hang around Reykjavik too much, get out into the countryside,
Iceland is gorgeous.
My #1 tip to tourists in Iceland: Get lost.
Like literally, get out of Reykjavik and actually explore, but don't get hurt.
Agreement, people shouldn't stay in the city much since it's better to explore the interesting and small places
@@TraustiGeir And don,t hurt our nature,by driving out of the roads.
@@sigrunsigurardottir6547
Oh, yes. We should enforce that with helicopters and stratospheric fines.
I loved the blue Lagoon high light of our trip
Kronan grocery store! They have the best vegan cheese :)
krónan is a shitty store
Quality advice regarding 10/11. It's very expensive and often situated near tourist hot spots for a reason. Bónus and Nettó are the low cost option. Hagkaup isn't terrible either.
Pretty sure the footage at number 7 (from 4:23) is taken in the city Nijmegen, which is not in Iceland but in the Netherlands
Right,not Reykjavik.
Cops run speed traps around rental car places where the speed alternates several times. Was made to pay on the spot or go to the police station. For 10 over was about $600. Very odd people that talk to ferries and $5 hotdog $10 beer.
As an Icelander, I'll further explain a few points.
1. Tipping is still appreciated, of course.
2. Avoid using "reusable" plastic water bottles that contain BPA. And yes, you can go as far as that you (1:11), but it's better if it's a running stream.
3. Though I do agree with he's view on tours, there are still MANY amazing tours that you can do all over Iceland. Whale watching, northern lights, and many more things have completely worthwhile tours, so don't be completely turned off from them. And yes! 100% rent a car.
4. In the countryside, SPEED. PASS. WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK, just be super safe when on gravel roads or f-roads. In the city, just don't be an asshole.
5. Just go to Kronan, Bonus, or Netto. For the most budget-friendly, I recommend Netto.
6. If you're expecting a "serene pool void of people", rethink. It'll never be like that. BUT! The Blue Lagoon is definitely something you should do.
7. ABSOLUTELY expect a party! Reykjavik sleeps, but we stay up late. Pubs, clubs, and bars are all great places to have a night out.
I'll add a point, aswell... LISTEN TO SIGNS. Don't fuck with our nature.
I like this video cuz I’m from Iceland bruh!
bruh
Bruh
If you go to the blue lagoon with the right mind set it can be a fun experience. I went with my wife and kid and we had a great time. It is expensive, but what is not expensive in Iceland? The only thing reasonably priced is the local orange soda you get in the grocery store :) But really... Visit Iceland, you will not regret it.
Very nice and honest list you have made. Keep up the good work
Thanks for this video - hoping to go to Iceland IN Feb for my 50th birthday (I expect there will be a lot of snow that time of year)!
Why no tours? I went there for hiking 3 times and the first time I did two tours which were awesome. It was for one day, I didnt had to rent a car and clog the street (imagine the 50 people inside the bus spread on 25-50 cars), and the tour guide was amazing with stories I havent read in any book. I am not saying that you should do nothing else but tours, but doing one the first time youre there is just fine.
cool video dude. Climbing that glacier is freakin amazing!
Thanks man! It was insane no doubt.
ACTUAL COST OF SPEEDING on a 90 km/h road in Iceland:
91-100 km/h = 15.000 ISK or 125 USD
101-110 km/h = 50.000 ISK or 418 USD
111-120 km/h = 80.000 ISK or 669 USD
121-130 km/h = 115.000 ISK or 961 USD
131-140 km/h = 150.000 ISK or 1.254 USD
141-170 km/h = Licence suspension and 210.000-240.000 ISK or 1.756-2.090 USD
171 km/h or more = Licence suspension, charge by the state and possible jail time.
And some car rentals might fine you on top of that for negligent behaviour or wreckless driving.
Ayyy welcome to Iceland
And i didnt know about any of these things thanks..
1:27 So why are you walking on a glacier without any proper gear or guide? ;)
yeah, it's not mandatory to tip anywhere in iceland..... but we can usually do with some coin, it just helps make life easier, no matter where yu are on earth
It's probably a good thing that tips aren't something that they do in Iceland, because almost everything there is very expensive!
Do like me, i visited 3 years ago and never leave from here 😁
Thank you.....I look forward to my first visit to Iceland
If you’re from the uk, Do not, I repeat, do not almost get of the left side of the bus, otherwise you’ll fall onto the driver
I live in Iceland 🇮🇸 and I would take a bus well a tour, why there can be messed up routs and places that you could miss.if you are asking me what tour or bus you should take bus4u Iceland
I live in iceland and the water is super clean and the speed pay can be higher
The water and food is so good.
How about money exchange tips, cash or card tips, driving license requirements, are the locals friendly or hostile, do they have unique custom gestures that we need to learn and etc
think if you have a eu drivers license your good and i can personally tell you we are not hostile and the unique custom gestures that can get a smile on anyone you meet is saying " i was told not to trample the moss"
Actually fines are up to 2000$, the cameras are really well marked if you know how to read the signs.
As an Icelandic person you should definitely try to mingle AND get some friends. There are usually house parties every other weekend with most locals that do party and those can get wack especially since alcohol is Michael cheaper in the bottles than from bars but remember the age to buy alcohol is 20 and always make sure to have your ID (keep your passport safe though it þau verða your only valid ID in Iceland) also make your own lunches etc, it's much cheaper :)
Also no one in Iceland relies on tips. NO ONE. so don't feel bad for not tipping they get payed anyway and a lot of the Times the business just takes the tip anyway.
Also please please please be careful when driving out terrain and weather can be so random and ALWAYS make sure to check over your rental car ALWAYS. Most of the people who die in car accidents are tourists.
These are very solid tips and I concur all of them, most especially about the 10-11-store chain, don't shop there, even Icelanders complain about how expensive it is. Also avoid Kvikk (It's 10-11 but under a different name and logo)
How ever I do put a question mark at the ,,Don't do tours''-part. Although traveling on your own via rental car is nice, there are still a lot of great tours that can be recommended. Especially if you wanna go hiking or trekking.
- Also visit this channel if you wanna know what it is like to live in Iceland.
Also! Jarðböðin at Mývatn: The cheaper, more comfortable, less crowded alternative to The Blue Lagoon.
One thing you should add is not to go to a northern lights trip with a bus because, you are really exited to go see them so you book a trip with some bus ore something like that and you don´t see them and by the way you do not get a refund. To be honest they are kind of rare so don´t get your hopes up! I just see them from my garden!
7 honest advice ... make perfect sense !
I hope I can travel this beautiful country😊, but its imposible 😢
If you're driving outside of Reykjavik, watch out for sheep, they wander freely in many places. Don't take your rental vehicle on roads it is not rated for and rest facilities are few and far between on the ring road or in Westfjords region, plan accordingly.
yup, i definitely agree about the blue lagoon! like there are free natural warm springs all over that you can visit and swim in! when i was there we hiked up some mountains to a warm stream. we also visited a so-called natural pool which had warm water in it from the springs all around it.
now granted there were some tourists but it's not at all near the level of the blue lagoon, you know?
Hi im from icland i disagree about the blue lagoon part because it’s really good for you and it is really relaxing and amazing but I agree with you about 1011 it’s true it’s really expensive
And the water bottle thing I don’t recommend buying water bottles because you can just get the water from the sink so I agree with that so yeah thank you✌🏼🇮🇸
Thanks for the video at some point in my life I would love to go to iceland maybe live there i like the cold and quiet places why you need to pay just to dip in the water I supposed you need to pay to swim the ocean as well?
no fines are 195 USD that's like a parking ticket compared to the speeding fines. Speeding fines go waaaay up to like 900 USD if not more
Nice video!
I'm form Iceland
Wow nice hearing that, please can i talk to you
No the speeding fines are not that low. They are quite ridiculous here in Iceland. Minimum fine is around $80 USD. Max fine is around $2,000 USD and indictment. If you go the most common speed limit in the US of 70 MPH. You'll get a $650 USD fine!
And nice people
Just let you guys know there actually is a lot of night life in Reykjavík but you only really see it after 12pm.
Your website's link on the description doesn't work, you might wanna change it
Thanks for the heads up! Should be fixed now.
How is Iceland in December? 2nd week of December that is. Should i get be going with a tour guide? --Thanks.
10-11 stores were baught out and are called krambudin now similar price to 10-11 but alittle cheaper
Now only since 2019 or last two years foreigners tourists are going to Iceland
Im sorry I didn’t watch this before I was born
Local tip here: Don't go to Bónus, they sell you garbage at a low price. Go to krónan instead, it will cost the same and the products are of much higher quality.
Also please don't take a shit in a parking lot, that had actually been a problem here for too long.
Also it's like Icelandic people have never seen a camera before, so if you even have a camera with you then you're bound to get a "wtf look" from every other person you walk by.
Number 8. Dont go just around Reykjavík, the golden circle and the blue lagoon. There is more to see than that 😊
Went to Iceland about a year and half ago. Did a lots research before I went, but seeing it in person is at another level. Love, love, love Iceland and all it has to offer. I very much agree with your list, especially the Blue Lagoon. It's way over priced and over rated. We went to a place called the Secret Lagoon and liked it much more. It looks to be family owned and is about a fourth of the prices. The water is real natural hot spring and not power plant run off. It also has smooth rocks at the bottom of the pool which feel extreme soothing after a longs day hike. If you able to get a sunny day at Black Sand Beach, you won't ever forget it. Our trip: ua-cam.com/video/5hxbveB8XXU/v-deo.html
Well done!
Im icelandic and i talk for most of pepol when i say thank u
Sounds like visiting the expensive part of new jersey
Just wanted to let you know that in the description of the video you state that we should avoid the rules while I think you mean avoid the mistakes or follow the rules.
good catch, surprised no one saw that sooner haha
And the supermarket Krónan is also cheap
