Mordheim Battle Report - Undead vs Dwarf Rangers

- It has been a long time since I've done any Mordheim, but a local-ish game store (Game Kastle in Sacramento, California) has been hosting a Mordheim campaign for the last few months and last week I was able to go down and check it out.
Not only that, I was able to get in a quick game versus a very nicely painted Dwarf Rangers warband with my never-before-used Undead. The Dwarfs are 3d resin prints and have a whole backstory of being Norse Dwarfs driven by the Troll Slayers and a great tragedy in the past. My Undead are my typical mix of middlehammer models led by Erich Draven the Vampire, who believes he has been returned to a form of life by the god Morr to exact revenge on those who wronged him.
As we only had about an hour to play before the store closes, it was very convenient that we rolled up the Street Fight scenario. So the Angels of Morr Undead warband are attempting to barge their way in to the ruins of Mordheim, but find their way blocked by the well-established Dwarf Rangers.
I'm not sure if I can commit to playing more frequently in the campaign, but the game was a lot of fun and really helped remind me why this was such a great game.

Thanks for the game! Only 12 dwarves in the warband. You'll be shocked to find out that this week that Thorolf died in battle against pit fighters, instead of his slayer siblings gaining the glory. Next week we are wrapping up the map campaign with an epic battle against demons, and a demon prince and chaos dragon that have appeared near the center of the crater.
Whoops, that’s embarrassing. Apparently I can’t count Dwarfs over seven. That and I said I spent 1000 gold on my warband when it’s only 500, I clearly have some math problems.
Was Thorolf one of the Slayers? I remember you said the warband would retire if both Slayers died. Bad luck no matter what.
Almost to the end. I should have tried to show up sooner. I’ll keep an eye out if there is a new one. Enjoy the exciting conclusion.

This was spectacular, I really enjoyed seeing a good old game of mordenheim.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I mean, I pretty much just ran straight forward into a wall. I think there’s just so much character in these things you get invested.
Vampires never leave battle voluntarily, which surely means they will not voluntarily rout. Unless a vamp is taken out of action
I believe the rule is referring to breaking from combat from all alone tests. They can rout. That’s why they can turn into bats.
I adore Mordheim. It's tough when your vampire can't hit in combat, because the rest of the units are not great fighters. But, this game is won in the post game. Looking forward to more battles!
Not typically my strongest phase of the game, but the Undead did surprisingly well. It’s weird they have very few models you can buy equipment for. Funding may not be such a big issue, so long as I don’t have to replace Ghouls too often.
Gods, its been years since we played this at my club. We had a great league going at one point, I ended up running Norse and Undead (we did 2 bands each), we had a great time. Your game looked fun, even if you got hammered by the dwarves. Street Fight kind of favours higher powered warbands as opposed to the objective based games.
Yeah, movement 3 doesn’t hurt so much when there’s no where to run. But it was perfect for a quick reintroduction.

You going to do any more mordheim? Gives me such nostalgia! I ran a game way back in the day where we all started with 250gp instead of 500, and we all had ‘20 warband points’ to spend on changing recovery rolls up and down- once spent they were gone forever but it meant that the first few games people went hard knowing they were not going to lose anybody to an unlucky ‘dead’ roll. Also meant that after three or four really quick games we had very different warbands- meaning by game 5/6 things were really interesting and most of us were all out of ‘warband points’ meaning we all got a little more timid- it was a good campaign I remember fondly
Sound like cool house rules. Seems like it would build small but experienced warbands. Good low fantasy stuff. Unfortunately, the last campaign wrapped up right after that game, and nothing has replaced it. I would love to start a campaign, but right now my focus has shifted to Halloween, so most likely nothing will happen on that front until November.
My comment will probably hit a wall but... Where do these dwarves sculpts come from? They are gorgeous!

Well, here’s the deal: I found out the campaign I dropped in on just wrapped up, and going forward Thursdays wouldn’t work anyway. The good news is this game has really encouraged me to start Mordheim again, so maybe in August I’m really going to make an attempt to get a campaign off the ground locally.

And, like last summer, I am painting Orcs while listening and looking.. Took a few weeks break but started to work on the skin of a new mob of two choppa-boyz and then this drops.. Perfect!

Not too bad though. I think with some better dice I could have at least made a dent in them. At least they usually let you strike first. I’ll try to be back, but the time is tricky. And good to hear you’re still making progress with the Orcs!

But the post-battle was decent! Too bad for the Dreg but not too expensive..
Maybe you can play some games at other times there? Love the post-battle and progress, when the dudes start to grow and show some character and get history, good and bad!
yeah! Picked up two rock lobbas so the Whaagh is starting to feel a little more balanced. I have some decent blocks of orcs 825 spears, 20 with two choppas, 10 Arrer Boys), 10 Spider Riders, a Chariot, characters, squigs, 40 plus 20 Night Gobbos..
Plus 24 unpainted Black Orcs.
1500p painted, decent size (6th ED) to start playing at. Will happen soon.. THAT took a bit but I raided in Mordheim in the meantime.. ;)
The tavernas and bars will never be the same. My orcs thought they were welocme and barrelled inside most, drank, threw food,. especially at the elves and started bar fights..

Wow that was sweet, I so want to get in to Mordheim! What is the closest Games Workshop game to day that comes close to Mordheim? I'm getting the rule book just looking for a good fair price. Thanks for the vid!!.
Wait, don’t spend that money. Download the Mordheim rules for free at broheim.net. Not only is it free, but the online rules incorporate some pretty important rules revisions and errata.
As far as other games, I’m not sure any current game uses the heavy campaign mechanics of Mordheim, except maybe Necromunda, but I’m not up to date on that game. Like Necromunda, Warcry is uses Mordheim sized gangs in skirmish combat. The mechanics and feel are very different, though, and the campaign system is thin.

Great video where did you get the dwarf miniatures from they look fantastic?
Those were 3d printed by my opponent. Sadly I don’t have any more information about them than that.
