The baba tournament arc's theme is that being selfless and can lead to rewards in unexpected ways. Goku is rewarded for being willing to sacrifice his own wants for someone elses need. Goku wants the 4 star ball because its his grandpas totem but in giving that up he is deemed good and survives a fight with the devil man and is rewarded with being able to challenge and reunite with his grandpa. This last bit of closure far outweighed having the 4 star ball.
That’s the absolute top as far as emotional resonance for the whole series. The next closest is Goku reliving his fight with Grandpa Gohan as he is waiting for Baba to pick up Frieza right before the tournament of power.
I love the fact that the dragon ball tournaments were never just tournaments. The story of tenshinhan, jacki chuns lesson, and goku overcoming all of his rivals. Absolutely peak
I love how Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu, Piccolo, Vegeta, 16, 17, 18, Buu, and even characters outside of the original run all changed themselves for the better, which are some of the best character arcs that I have ever seen.
I consider the Red Riddon Army arc and the Baba arc to be one cohesive Saga. It started off with Goku looking for the just the Four-Star Ball but then changing his goal to finding all of the dragon balls to make a wish to revive Bora. After all that is said and done, he catches the stone of the Four Star Ball.
@@MereMere I feel like they work as individual sagas personally, because the Red Ribbon saga was about Goku defeating the army, and the Fortune Teller Baba saga followed that up with Goku doing everything to bring back Upa’s father.
The Tenshinhan Saga isn't just about Tien's development, it's also about Roshi's. He enters the tournament as Jackie Chun, with the same intention as last time- To block his students from winning and teach them to keep training as there's always someone stronger. But then he sees Yamcha do a Kamehameha, after having secretly practiced it for a short time. Then Krillin pulls off the Kamehameha too, after briefly practicing it in the middle of a fight. And then Tien uses it after seeing it used against him once, with no practice whatsoever. Up until this tournament, Roshi believed that Goku was a prodigy who learned his technique in a single try, despite it taking him decades to master. The tournament showed him that Goku was just the first of a new generation of fighters, and that he needed to step down in order to allow them to flourish.
Awesome video. I like to think the Cell sagas theme is sacrificing your own desires for the greater good. The z fighters wanting to fight the androids instead of stopping gero beforehand. Vegeta neglecting his family. Vegeta allowing cell to become perfect. Krillin w the remote. Android 18 not listening to anyone telling her to run, Goku not understanding gohan(maybe a stretch), Gohan not listening to Goku to kill cell, and even Cell himself not listening to Gohan which caused his own demise
And also how the future is inevitable, most of the things that happened in the future happened in the past, and also in goku passing the torch to gohan, and him realizing that he got old and that he will not be able to defend the earth forever, thats why he almost doesnt do anything since hes already past hes date, they show this with goku not being able to deal with the threaths he himself inderectly created
The theme is just "have fun and enjoy an adventure" and it's really not deeper than that. Doesn't have to be. That's what makes the original pre-Z Dragonball so great in the end.
Thank you for making this video, I find it incredibly disingenuous when people swear that Dragon Ball doesn't have well written themes and character growth and only boil things down to buff guys screaming and fighting. Each lesson to take away from the tournament arcs really stuck with me.
I feel like this video really undersells the themes of the Buu Saga & how what happened in it reflects them, this is a comment I made under the video "The Buu Saga: Dragonball's Best Worst Arc" which sums up my thoughts abt it although its not a perfect analysis "I disagree with the thematic inconsistency thing: we can argue about Toriyama's intentions but once the series is done I believe a different interpretation is much more reasonable than "He wanted to do the younger generation but then changed his mind and let Goku be the hero", and it's about our heroes mistakes & *how* they beat Buu at the end Before we talk abt the old generation I'd like to point to Vegeta's self sacrifice, which did not work in defeating Buu, and this is because the deepest core idea of Dragonball is about self improvement, and sacrificing yourself in order to defeat the enemy is antithetical to that and the show is basically always consistent in this, just think of all the sacrifices characters have made; Chiatzou, Piccolo, Goku in the Cell Saga & Vegeta here as well, they never work & they are thematically not allowed to work either Now, as you yourself have pointed out, the new generation in Gohan, Goten & Trunks have immense potential, however they're all flawed & too immature, Gotenks (I'll just refer to em as that from now on cuz both sides apply either way) could become one of the strongest beings in the universe, however, they are still naive children, yet, despite of this, Goku attempts to make them shoulder the burden of Buu in order to prepare them for even worse to come, however this is way too rushed & irresponsible of Goku, yes the new generation will need to save the day, but it'll have to do it under proper guidance by the old generation (like Goku received from Roshi, Karin & Kami in order to face the challenges he faced when he was a child), Gotenks cruically lacks this, and so, in order to compensate they try to fuse together, and despite their immense power they can't win, and this is thematically crucial, because the kids, having been rushed into this through the mistakes of the older generation (Vegeta & Goku), are essentially forced to take a shortcut to strength in the form of the fusion dance, and so, thematically fitting, the kids lose because this win would not be deserved as it was not gained through self improvement but essential through a cheat code Then we get Gohan, who hasn't trained properly in a long time (which is also against the series' message), and as far as defeating Buu goes he only gets to try after his potential is unlocked by sheer luck to meet the Old Kai, and he then received an ultimately still rushed (& as you have pointed out, painfully ironic) training, but unlike the kids he doesn't have the excuse of, well, being a kid, he was an adult & ideally should have known to keep on training but he didn't and him not being able to beat Buu is him facing the consequences of that After Gohan we get Vegitto, and here, Goku & Vegeta, still in their mistaken ways, also pragmatically decide to fuse and so temporarily, but thematically undeservedly, gain immense power, but again, because this was essential a shortcut they are not allowed to win either, but what's exactly the thematic purpose in showing us the same outcome (fusion leading to defeat) twice? Well, it's to show that this idea applies equally to both the new & old generation, neither of them can protect the planet if they attempt to use these shortcuts And also, mind you, this applies in equal fashion to Buu as well; he keeps becoming stronger by quite literally absorbing/fusing with people, yet he ultimately doesn't win, because, very naturally, the antagonist of the story goes against the message the story is trying to convey So the new generation, in having been misguided & grown complacent, wasn't fit to defeat the enemy and the old generation, operating under thematically false lessons, also were not suited for the job, and when both sides get stripped of these false power ups by each other the story leaves us with 3 specific characters on the side of our heroes & Kid Buu as our antagonist Goku, throughout the Arc, realizes that his ways in it were mistaken and that he was rushing to pass the torch, he even says he could've beaten Fat Buu had he really, properly tried, and Im inclined to believe him, because if Goku was operating under correct lessons there is no thematic reasoning why Goku, usually the embodiment of self improvement, couldn't win Vegeta's Nr 1 speech essentially spills out why it has to be Goku to to be the catalyst of Buu's defeat in the end, because out of the entire cast, he is the only one who, quite literally even in death, pushes his own limits to the fullest and achieves new, unseen heights before, and that's what Super Saiyan 3 represents However, if it was as simple as Goku thematically being allowed to *defeat* Buu because of his usual self improvement then the Arc could've ended much sooner, but not only did Goku have to realize his flawed ways of thinking about the new generation, but he, despite his own achievments, is also still a product of the guidance & strength the people in his life have given him, and this is why I said catalyst and not outright winner, because without Mr Satan, generally seen as a fraud, but actually legitimately a guy who won a Tenkaichi Budokai through his own sheer hard work, Goku could not have won, because fittingly it has to be Mr Satan to call out to the Earthlings to give Goku the energy he requires to defeat Kid Buu, and Goku could ONLY defeat Buu with the Genkidama because his previous mistakes wouldn't allow him to do it all by himself, but now having learned from his false ways he wishes Buu to be reborn as a good guy so that next time he doesn't repeat his false attitude towards the younger generation, he'll properly guide Uub and make him a deserving protector of the Earth, the same way Goku was properly guided as a kid And also Kid Buu is the perfect antagonist to be defeated by Goku, Vegeta & Mr Satan, because all 3 of these characters mishandle the new generation (Videl is also a character worth dissecting here but the comment is long enough), and in their mishandling they have quite literally met with the manifestation of an unguided child-like monster with immense power: Kid Buu, he is everything gone wrong with a kid that could go wrong, and that's because, again, Buu never ever received proper guidance, and the series REALLY wants to make it clear how important it actually is to do so So yeah, Im sorry if I've repeated myself here and there and also this isn't a perfect analysis by any means, there are a lot of aspects Im omitting for time's sake, but yeah these are the general ideas & why I don't believe the Buu Arc is thematically inconsistent at all, it is VERY consistent, the themes are just not as straight foward as one might think at first glance regarding the new generation Good video overall tho!" Very on point on the rest of the Arcs tho
This is good. However I noticed one mistake. Going into the cell games Goku already had full understanding of the difference between him and Gohan. This realizing what made him regret his choice. If you go back and watch it wasn’t that that made him have a change of heart: it was when piccolo pointed out that I Gohan may not even know his plan or be thinking of it and instead is just out their scared and thinking his father abandoned him. It was at this realization that he asked for a sense.

I feel like this video really undersells the themes of the Buu Saga & how what happened in it reflects them, this is a comment I made under the video "The Buu Saga: Dragonball's Best Worst Arc" which sums up my thoughts abt it although its not a perfect analysis
"I disagree with the thematic inconsistency thing: we can argue about Toriyama's intentions but once the series is done I believe a different interpretation is much more reasonable than "He wanted to do the younger generation but then changed his mind and let Goku be the hero", and it's about our heroes mistakes & *how* they beat Buu at the end
Before we talk abt the old generation I'd like to point to Vegeta's self sacrifice, which did not work in defeating Buu, and this is because the deepest core idea of Dragonball is about self improvement, and sacrificing yourself in order to defeat the enemy is antithetical to that and the show is basically always consistent in this, just think of all the sacrifices characters have made; Chiatzou, Piccolo, Goku in the Cell Saga & Vegeta here as well, they never work & they are thematically not allowed to work either

After Gohan we get Vegitto, and here, Goku & Vegeta, still in their mistaken ways, also pragmatically decide to fuse and so temporarily, but thematically undeservedly, gain immense power, but again, because this was essential a shortcut they are not allowed to win either, but what's exactly the thematic purpose in showing us the same outcome (fusion leading to defeat) twice? So the new generation, in having been misguided & grown complacent, wasn't fit to defeat the enemy and the old generation, operating under thematically false lessons, also were not suited for the job, and when both sides get stripped of these false power ups by each other the story leaves us with 3 specific characters on the side of our heroes & Kid Buu as our antagonist
Goku, throughout the Arc, realizes that his ways in it were mistaken and that he was rushing to pass the torch, he even says he could've beaten Fat Buu had he really, properly tried, and Im inclined to believe him, because if Goku was operating under correct lessons there is no thematic reasoning why Goku, usually the embodiment of self improvement, couldn't win
Vegeta's Nr 1 speech essentially spills out why it has to be Goku to to be the catalyst of Buu's defeat in the end, because out of the entire cast, he is the only one who, quite literally even in death, pushes his own limits to the fullest and achieves new, unseen heights before, and that's what Super Saiyan 3 represents

Wrath of the dragon like you said is one
Broly the legendary super Saiyan is a tragic story and I know there's a theme in there since it's one of the most story based ones though I can't pinpoint it
Tree of might could be the theme that
Greed will destroy you as his greed for cheap power ups wound up getting him killed as the spirit bomb that killed him used the same source he would get stronger from
Slug similar to king piccolo could have some theme about eternal youth as both wound up dying for making that wish instead of immorality
Garlic jr is the opposite
Immortality isn't what it's cracked up to be now he's immortal and he's stuck forever
Can't really think of one for the cooler movies
Android 13 I can't think of one
The bardock special could maybe be a theme that caring for others gives you strength as it allowed him to go super Saiyan and beat his opponent
Fusion reborn I can't think of one
But there's surely one there involving Goku and Vegeta relationship especially the end where Goku says bye to him again
Also for the kid who became janemba could be a theme about being too carefree
If there's one for battle of God's movie it would be the same as the anime and similarly with resurrection f
