I have His Dark Materials trilogy in a beautiful hardcover edition. I’m very excited to read it. I agree that some modern fantasy books tend to follow annoying trends like the Sanderson style hard magic system that makes the story very soulless. I had to put down a book named Foundryside for this very reason. Children’s books tends to do a better job at building atmosphere. Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix comes to mind.
If you like Hobb, please check out Curse of the Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold. The protagonist reminded me a little bit of Fitz, but if Fitz got a happier ending :)

You've described certain fantasy as "tacky" and " cheap coffee" in other reviews. I think this book fit the bill. It has a plot, it has words, it has characters. But it does not have a soul.

Your reaction to this is very interesting to me. I agree with your opinions on Brandon Sanderson and Fonda Lee about how dull and boring those are, but I actually really enjoyed "The Will of the Many". I wonder if it's because I listened to the audiobook for it, and the narrator's voice added more flavour to it (and I could listen at 2x speed). Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a profound, life changing experience, but I thought it was an adequately constructed, fun popcorn flick.
I also felt that, compared to Jade City and Mistborn, The Will of the Many felt much more mysterious and consequently intriguing.

Same. Honestly writing is everything to me. If it doesn't click, the book is a miss for me.
I've ditched fantasy and SF for now (new books that is, rereads will continue) and am reading a lot of mystery/thrillers. Lots of good books. Lot of recommendations taken from Mercy's Bookish Musings' latest literary thriller recs video.

Your negative reviews are the best thing ever, there's no way around it. I obviously like when you're loving a book, but when a book makes your brain rot away is incredible to see. The only modern young adult book I've ever liked is Loner by Teddy Wayne, it's pretty short if you want to give it a go.

Lol! I enjoyed the vlog. Had me laughing. I find your negative reviews very entertaining. I also appreciate the warning, since I have this on my TBR. There are a lot of YA fantasy these days masquerading as adult fantasy.

Oh man. I would totally have DNFd this one. (I'm going to break your heart but I DNFd Forest Mage at about a third of the way through. I just couldn't with all the food torture. And the magic was just boring to me...)

Oh no! I’d also only heard rave reviews about this book. I’m like you where often I don’t liked hyped fantasy books. In general I always seem to prefer older published fantasy. Early 2000’s and back. (And even early 2000’s it’s tricky because that’s when the YA love triangle type book took off 😂).
The way I always describe it is: I like fantasy books that are about a story that happens to be set in a magical world, as opposed to books about a magical world where a story happens to take place. In my opinion, story should always come first, and in so many modern stories, world building and “magic systems” come first.
So many modern authors are just trying too hard to be bad as s, or cool or whatever, I don’t even know but they try too hard 😂

Hate His Dark Materials after book 1 though lol and plenty of popular stuff like Robin Hobb and Murakami

Lol, I already find the likes of J.K Rowling generic and artificial enough. You using her as a contrast to this tells me that this is some real trash. Also, thank you for calling out Blandon Panderson and that whole "movement" toward making ficiton as flat as possible. Same thing that's happening in every medium it seems because of the need to _pander_ to the lowest common denominator ("the will of the many").
