  • In this video I attempt to replace the rear main seal in my 1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ with a 4.2 Inline 6 engine. That goes well but the oil pan throws me a curve ball.

"...start a UA-cam channel, guaranteed to make everything take 10x longer..." 🤣 I am sure that is true. I like that you talk about what you are thinking. That helps. Good vid!

Been there, done that (similar anyway), got the greasy t-shirt! Every quick and easy fix on my '78 CJ7 has turned into a multi week "goat rope"! Thanks for the easy to follow and clear steps. Apparently the only things keeping many parts attached to my jeep are rust and/or baked oil and dirt.

I feel you on that "start a UA-cam channel" thing .. I got the great idea to start recording what I do to my motorcycles, and a simple clutch cable, which should take an hour or so at most, is now turned into my bike sitting on the lift table for two weeks LOL

You are lucky the last guy did not put rtv on the back side of that main seal...you would have never slid/driven it out. You correctly applied rtv to the only spot(s) where it was appropriate.

The 4.2 and 4.0 use the same pickup tube its just that the oil pump on 4 2 is located on a one main cap father back than the 4.0 the only way to swap the pan is to cut to the baffle far as I know

11:55 much love to a YJ brother! I’m pretty sure that your 88 YJ I6 might be a 4.0, which might be why the 4.2 oil pan doesn’t fit. Somebody may have swapped motors in the past though. Good luck!

Thanks for watching! I started thinking the same thing but everything else points to it being a 4.2. Mainly the non fuel injection and lack of an oil filter adapter- unless maybe that was deleted. Now you have me questioning it again! 😀

that oil pan will fit. sometimes you have to finagle it in. sometimes pans have to be angled a certain way. and I know the lines and some other stuff get in the way.

I’m in the process of completing the same repair. I’m curious, about where you applied the sealant, and if you did in fact stop the rear main leak?

I applied rtv very lightly on the "ears" of the bottom half and on the ends of the top half. Yes I stopped the leak.

You would be better off using a 4.ol pan and pump, the rear sump and pickup is far better than a center sump to reduce crank/oil pickup/windage problems and more oil capacity.

considering the windage tray/baffle has been mangled up I wouldn't use that.
