Thanks for that video, feel way more informed than I was previously. Found out my rear seal was leaking when I went for an oil change today.

A good mechanic will clean the area and be careful installing the new seal. Unfortunately not all mechanics are good mechanics and some will just install the new one without even bothering to clean the area. This is the problem most people face when needing work done to their car and is the main reason I taught myself how to fix cars.

This is true, some mechanics would consider this a technical job and would not touch it.

Maybe a dumb question, but this seal puts up with a spinning crankshaft, and still holds oil in? Fascinating

Question sir..if your car is automatic transmission...and your rear main seal is worn out.what oil will coming out there?is it ATF?or ENGINE OIL?

No one answered you but it would be engine oil. The rear main seals the engine block. The next seal behind that would be the input shaft seal (front trans seal) and that holds in your ATF.

My mechanic said it’s be about a 12 hour job to replace my rear main seal. Is that possible?

Using a torque wrench to take a part off would help us understand how many newton-meter's was set by the who installed the part :)

Hey - this one is not easy to tell unless you pull out the transmission from the engine, then you would be able to tell easier where the oil leak is taking place. Before you do this however monitor your engine oil dipstick to see if the amount is deceasing? Also if you do have way of measuring and seeing how much transmission oil you have that would be helpful.
