For anyone reading this who has a baby who takes a little (or a lot) longer to sleep through- sonetimes you do everything right and they just aren't ready. We followed all the advice for baby 1 and she took 18 months +. She also couldn't be put down for the first 6 months. She was just that kind of baby. My second was chill and she slept through at 8 months. Every baby is different. People told us "we do x y z and our baby sleeps through" but we did all the same things. Some babies are good sleepers.

Hi just want to say my baby has been sleeping 12 hours at night since she was 3 months and that’s just who she is and I’m extremely lucky. Some things help, like having a consistent bedtime routine. Most of it is the baby, however. It’s just luck. If your baby isn’t sleeping through the night at 3, 6, 9, 12 months, it’s not you, it’s your baby. Do whatever you can to meet their needs. Trust your gut.

@@chocolatelover4695 yeah so have we and she went from sleeping through the night very early up to the first 6 months of her life, to now (12 Months old) waking up hourly or even more often in really bad nights.. she is doing everything by the book she is supposed to for good night sleep and she is confirmed healthy by the doc. Unfortunately the routine is not the magic solution for everyone.

You’re such a great mom! Helping your daughter become an independent sleeper will definitely improve her independence in the long run. I wish my parents did this with me. They would have slept more and fought less.... I wouldn’t have been so terrified of being alone as I got older and older. Definitely going to do assisted sleep training with my children :)

Raised 6 kids that are all now grown and have to say every single thing Nikole said is bang on to teach your child to be a good sleeper. Like breastfeeding, sleep is something you and baby need to learn together and it takes time to create a good routine and habits. Just on the stuffie or blankie (comfort object) make sure if you are having 2 to alternate them regularly because Baby loves the smell of the comfort object and will surely notice if you replace it with one that doesn't smell right. Also the overnight nappy we would put an overnight sanitary pad in the nappy to last 12hrs but sizing up is perfect. Great advice Nikole 👍

I followed you during my pregnancy and you were so good to watch for ideas for baby and motherhood (sometimes advice from friends and family is too opinionated or close for comfort). Our baby girl is 3 months tomorrow and has naturally gotten into this most nights, so we're just waiting on the possible sleep regression to see what happens next. She's only a small day napper and is very excited by everything which we love (and is ahead of her game, which shows it's all up for interpretation). I was surprised by the 12 hour video when I first watched, it seemed negative (in UK culture), until Ophelia, our baby, started to do it. She nearly wakes for feeds when she needs them, she gives us cues in her sleep (I'm told by everyone I know with babies or kids that this is rare). I know everyone's different but it's good that your video housed discussions to it, whatever parents' belief systems people hold. Don't let people get you down, like you say, everyone is doing what is best for their kids. I'm really grateful for your mum videos, they're refreshing 🥰💗☺️
Ps. I also get the mental health side from my past, kudos to you getting through it and continuing filming/working/being a solid mum and partner! 👍🏼

My kid is like, the opposite😅 she nurses to sleep every time, her bedtime is 11pm and she sleeps till 11am (which was on purpose due to our work schedules) she was sleeping 8 hours straight by 2 months and it was AMAZING! We did keep a strict dinner/bath/book/bed routine from like month 1 tho!

Hi Nicole. Thank you very much for choosing this topic. I have been working with many children throughout my life and can say that all of them are different. When majority are good sleepers, there are certainly some who need support with having a good sleep routine. The sleep therapist are therefore of a great help. It makes a huge difference for a child to be guided with their sleep and gives them their energy back. Not even mentioning the effect on the rest of the family and peers if they attend nursery setting. Please, can you invite a speech therapist in your videos, as I have burning questions and would appreciate having a professional’s opinion too. Once again, my gratitude for choosing real topic for real life experiences.

I started a routine literally as soon as we came home and everyone thought I was insane. Idk what people think a routine is or why they think it's so hard but I do know for me it helped I started right off the bat. Every single night at 6:00 I began a routine. I would get him ready for bed, fresh diaper and massage every night. Sometimes it's a longer more intense massage but I always rub him down with lavender lotion and then put on jammies.. and then I would spray lavender essential oil spray in the room. We pick 1-3 books to read and cuddle up with the books and I read them. Then I turn on the sound maching and hand him his bottle and it's night out ❤️ He's always slept good! But he's starting to wake up with what seems to be night terrors! So that's stressful to me! Anyone else experiencing that?? He's about to be 1 on may 5th ❤️

Hey Nikole! Thanks for all the tips! You’re an amazing, loving Mum and I hope you keep doing what you’re doing. Remind yourself that haters are only projecting their own lives at you and their opinion of you and your life has nothing to do with you nor do you have any control over it. Our opinions are entirely based around our own personal experiences and trauma, controlling how we perceive things regardless of the reality so try not to let it get to you x
If that doesn’t reassure you, babies at Sage’s age are generally developmentally able to sleep through the night without needing a feed so do not let people say you’re neglecting your child’s needs because that is simply not true. Plus, you’ve obviously put a lot of care and consideration into Sage’s needs when implementing a night time routine and sleep training so neglect is far from your reality as a parent. Some people are so dramatic with their words.
One last thing: whatever is considered “normal”, ie people referring to babies waking up through the night, does not directly correlate to what is healthy. It also used to be “normal” for cots to have bumpers but we know now that it increases the risk of SIDS. So forget normal and continue to listen to your own baby’s needs as attentively as you are and do what you feel is best for Sage and your family.
Hopefully this reassured you even a little, and maybe even some other Mums in the comments too. I’m so grateful for your videos and hope you continue making them! Thanks so much from us here in Australia ❤️

I'm surprised you had a lot of criticism for this video. You weren't even that in-depth (like a specific how to on how to sleep train) and you didn't even say anything controversial (not that you needed to be in-depth! I know this was great tips you've found! I also agree the awake to sleep is a good tip I've read and didn't know about before but makes sense and my favorite tip was the buttery soft pajamas and how switching from day clothes to night clothes is important which I didn't think about and I have not read anywhere for babies (just adults lol) but makes sense and I'm going to do that now). Every thing you said is in line with that I've read. Maybe because you weren't that in-depth people just started making up "child trauma" in their mind and came with a judgmental heart. Love getting to know you and your family through your videos! Thank you!

My 19-month-old still wakes up every two hours in the night (sometimes more). There is absolutely no way I could put her down awake, she just jumps up in her cot and up and down screaming And I would never leave her to cry. She absolutely refuses to sleep in a cot so she’s in bed with us but she still wakes constantly. We never dealt with sleep regressions because there is nothing to regress from LOL her sleep is always just been permanently awful. I’ve tried absolutely everything from a really strict routine to no routine, I spent hundreds of pounds on sleep consultants and osteopath appointment absolutely nothing works unfortunately. Some kids are just bad sleepers And sleep is developmental sometimes they just need time. X

Came here to mention this too.
My daughter at about 1 y.o. sleeps 11.5 hours maximum over 24h, so there's no way she can sleep for 12 just at night. And we never had naps over 1.5h as well. And even that usually leads to her waking up at night all bright and ready to play 🙈
So it's 10-10.5h at night + 30-50 mins naps for us and there's not much that can be done about it, whether or not I pay a sleep consultant 🤷🏻‍♀️
There's a very wide window of normal for sleep.

I really think working with a sleep consultant brings so much awareness on the tons of information and studies they have to share to help you teach kids how to sleep. It’s a habit they learn just like everything else and just like starting solids, building correct sleeping habits goes a long way. That’s why we have adults who just can’t sleep or have sleeping problems , it goes back to some of the poor sleeping habits they picked up right from birth! It’s a really interesting topic and so much studies are done to help us learn and teach our babies sleep!
And no I’m not referring to cry it out methods, babies don’t have to cry to learn to sleep especially if you start from early on

Although, we're kinda lucky as he'll go to sleep really well and by himself. But inevitably he wakes up, sometimes up to 5x/night. Goes right back to sleep after breastfeeding but still. I guess sleep is the n*1 question for families, I feel less alone in this 😅

This is just to clarify and I’m not saying this to judge Nikole at all, but her daughter puts herself to sleep because of the sleep training, which “teaches” babies how to fall asleep independently. Without it, most babies can’t put themselves to sleep without parental support, and that support is totally normal and natural. All babies learn to put themselves to sleep naturally in their own time, so please don’t feel like there’s anything wrong because your babies don’t sleep independently just yet 💕

I think sleep topic is very sensitive to parents.
Some parents who Co-sleep or choose to avoid any form of sleep training and attend their child 20 times at night judge the parents who choose sleep training and actually get sleep 😂
And some parents who follow any form of sleep training and follow a more disciplined routine tend to judge the other types of parents who just go with the flow or get defensive and tend to justify why they do it

Please do your research before “gently” sleep training your child. Any form of sleep training is, in fact, ignoring your child’s cry for help. Wake ups have a purpose, for little ones. SIDS prevention being one. Sleep is developmental, not something that can be taught. Look into biologically normal infant sleep. To each their own, Nikole’s content is still great and I am going to keep following. But please don’t base something as important as your baby’s sleep on a UA-cam video.

I think it's just the wording she used that's not accurate. She didn't "teach" Sage, but provided the opportunity for Sage to learn in a safe loving environment. There are cries for help and cries just because. I'm never one to just let my baby cry but I listen to her "tone" carefully and know when she is asking for me or just wants to yell for 30 seconds. Those sleeps with the "last stand", as we call it, typically end up being her best. I think of it as providing an opportunity for her to learn. I don't want to rob my baby of an opportunity for growth as long as it isn't causing her stress. If I pick her up when her tone isn't saying pick me up she actually gets more upset and wants to be put back down. She was confident working it out on her own I just got in her way. I nurse her to sleep every time and make sure I'm attentive and respond to her every need in the day. I make sure to listen closely to what she is actually saying with her body language and tone of cry. I don't think it has to be either or. Your baby will tell you what to do if you listen.

Everything was great up until the “gentle” sleep training. I challenge anyone to post a video about how their infant sleeps 12 hours WITHOUT sleep training. The word “gentle” is clearly there to make the parent feel better, but let’s be honest, you let your baby cry to sleep. Babies are supposed to wake up during the night, and as you recognized yourself, she still wakes up during the night. The only difference is that now she knows no one will come for her, so she learned to ignore her instincts. So is she really having a better sleep? Or is she just not bothering you about it anymore?
Studies show that sleep trained babies wake at night just as often, if not more, than babies who are not sleep trained. People need to be realistic about infant sleep and stop trying to put the adult needs above their babies. This is no shade to you, Nicole, but more to our culture.

@@tjb7283 I don’t think the original commenter was trying to bring Nikole down. Most of us here love and appreciate her content and that’s why we’re here. Also, it’s none of our business how she chooses to parent her daughter or what works for her in terms of sleep, but this video is intended to provide advice to Nikole’s many followers, and the last tip being sleep training serves to perpetuate the sleep training industry’s controversial practices that cause new parents so much stress and anxiety and is often at odds with biologically normal infant sleep. I experienced the stress caused by such detrimental advice when I became a mom 9 months ago, until I followed my instincts and did what worked best for my baby and my family and tossed the sleep training narrative out of the window. I’m not an exception and many new parents feel exactly the way I do, and that’s why we’re trying to voice our concerns and speak out that sleep training is not the only option or solution to babies’ sleep challenges, as the sleep training industry would want you to believe.
And to answer your question, she mentions that the consultant taught her how to distinguish between the different types of cries, which means there was crying involved, and sleep training needs a week or longer of crying to start working. Again to each their own and it’s Nikole’s business how she handles her baby’s sleep, but when her method is given as advice or a hack for everyone, people have the right to respond to it, and it’s not hate or “bringing down” by any means.

Please check the work of doctors Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate. They are Canadian doctors who are experts in child development and follow evidence based practices, and they caution against sleep training in any form. Their studies have shown that sleep training harms the attachment between infant and parent. They dedicated their careers to studying child development, so their word should be more trusted than any so-called sleep consultant who take their knowledge from outdated non-evidence based courses that are not regulated by any governing body. Both doctors have books that can be purchased anywhere and also a lot of lectures and interviews on youtube if anyone is interested.

Can we please normalize normal infant & toddler wakings? 12 hours of sleep is not normal biologically & ST babies still wake up, they just aren’t calling out because they have learned their cries aren’t responded to. Most babies are hungry during the night, 12 hours is way too long to go without food or drink in their tiny bodies. This really breaks my heart that this is sleep training culture is becoming normalized, when it is not normal & goes against our natural paternal instincts.

    • @amweeks1002

I'm sorry, but it's completely normal for little ones to sleep 12 hours at night. When my daughter was around 1.5 years old, she started sleeping 10-12 hours at night without waking. There was no crying and when there was, I always responded because it usually meant something was wrong (poopy diaper). I took my cues from her and if she didn't wake up throughout the night then I wasn't about to go wake her up just to see if she was hungry. Every baby/toddler is different and you shouldn't criticize someone for sharing their sleep hacks that worked for their little one. Also, did you even watch the video? Her hacks are very useful and mentioned nothing about ignoring your babies cries or letting them go hungry. She even said she didn't like the cry it out method which is why she chose not to use it.

I didn't sleep for 4 months. My baby hardly slept and i almost went mad. I picked Ferber book on sleep training and mark weissbluths book, they are both doctors any have done years of research on sleeping. If you read those you would know how much sleep is essential for a baby, if not it can affect their brain development, social activities etc. I implemented ferber and my life changed, my baby changed from this always fussy to best baby ever. But ya so many bashed us, my in laws etc etc. But who cares if it's good for your baby, you will have to do it.
For those who tried and failed, dont loose heart. Read these books because they list what you are doing wrong.
If your child says they want to go on a cycle ride without helmet, would you let them, even if they cry? Because it's not safe. Similarly proper sleep is essential for healthy growth. And remember the more you wait, the more difficult it will get

Nobody is ripping her apart. It’s great that those hacks work for Nikole but this video is also intended to provide hacks for people to use, so viewers are allowed to respectfully disagree and inform that there are other ways of handling baby sleep. Sleep training is a controversial topic, and much of the advice provided by sleep training culture causes anxiety and stress to new parents, and you can see it’s parents like those who are voicing their opinions and also facts about sleep training. There’s maybe one rude comment that I see and it’s not even about baby sleep, the rest are all respectful. Why is it seen as hate when we disagree? Especially about something as baby sleep where there is so much conflicting information, others have to share that in order for viewers to know that sleep training is the not only option, and that they should do their own research to make an informed decision about something so important before following advice simply because it worked for somebody else.
