Hello and welcome! This is a whopper of a video! But I couldn't find anywhere else where I could trim the fat. So here it is, an extensive intro to the the Yin/Yang Method. If you've never heard of this method before or you're new to my channel, this approach is designed to help you a truly custom wardrobe. Now there's so much more that I plan on elaborating on, but I thought it was very necessary to put together a video for those of you who are green to this method.
I love this method for a few different reasons. First, I truly feel that it can be adapted by anyone no matter what your body composition or facial characteristics are, which makes for a very inclusive experience. Next is that it includes your essence (these are your non-physical traits)....and when properly expressed, the head-to-toe look is sure to be 100% YOU!

This has been one of the best and least confusing guides on the topic. What turns me off about the kibbie system is the constant use of the words “feminine” and “masculine”. Although not inaccurate of what yin and yang represent, many have negative connotations with being described as such. Especially as a guy (im a gamine) i have to admit i felt a bit insecure being repeatedly told I’m the opposite of masculine, manly and strong. I’m sure it rings true for women as well, when the descriptions of what we ought to be dont correlate with what we are. This felt more inclusive and i appreciate the conscious phrasing of making each type not sound like a “wrong” one to be. I know I’m not the usual viewer or consumer of the topic (mostly women talk about this in relation to other women), but I’d love to understand more about how it correlates to men & how to dress for each type.
Men’s fashion media (UA-cam, ig, reddit) needs help, its all the same cookie cutter rules and outfits. Getting yelled at with discount codes and being guilted into (because 🙋♀️👩women🤩💁♀️ dont 🙅♀️want men who x or y) buying this or doing that gets old. I wanna dress for me and feel good about me. The peak of mens fashion is jeans and a shirt 👖👔 it has less spice than water Please we are starving
Whoa! Thank you so so much for this amazingly honest feedback! I completely agree with everything you said. And YES I do want to dive into some men’s style here soon. I happen to see what you’re seeing.....lack of actual authenticity in men’s wardrobe suggestions because you’re supposed to put forward some sort of front. BOR-ING! So I watch a variety of YT content and a male that I’ve found to be pretty inspiring with authentic style is Andrew Schultz....he’s a comedian who does a podcast called Flagrant 2. Whether you like his comedy or not, he’s a pretty good example of someone who dresses in harmony with his body type and essence. Like this look.....(air kiss) so creative and in harmony with him! Love how he’s not afraid to experiment and honoring his essence makes the total package attractive....because it’s honest 😉 At 1:14:00 they do a little “fashion show”. I dunno....I think it’s worth checking out ua-cam.com/video/iWkfNpfrQUk/v-deo.html
Anyways, thanks for tuning in and hopefully I can get started on making some content geared towards males so you guys aren’t in a plain white T, jeans, and a watch bore-fest 🤘🏻
My husdband is a gamine and I am a natural. So we are both stereotyped with the opposite sex. I understand what you are saying. Wording can be important. The reality is: 1- there is nothing wrong with having some elements that are more tipycal of the opposite sex, both phisically and mentally 2- gamine men can be very masculine if they want to (and very sexy if you ask me) and natural women can be very feminine. Body typing should just be helpful for choosing clothes, not define us.
Glad to see a men interested in the subject! 😀
Everyone is a different mix of masculine and feminine.
idk if this helps from a random stranger but i really like gamine guys, especially soft ones
It's not literally about sex or gender tho, but energy and lines.
It's just the system's own language and it's not intended to be offensive
the presence of yin and yang in architecture, landscaping and DANCE helps so much to understand this concept in body types. By the way, Tango is originally a dance for two men, so it is originally 100% YANG
How interesting!!! I had no idea that it was originally a male:male dance! How cool to know.....thanks for sharing!
I love how you pointed out the presence of yin and yang in the world, through architecture, landscaping and dance! I knew it was present in everything, but I never actually stopped to think about concrete examples! How fun to notice them!

How life-changing this information could be to a young girl coming through puberty? It has been so helpful to me at age 60! If we could accept our body types and learn to dress according to our personhood, we would be less open to suggestions that we don’t fit into our own body. You make me want to learn more and go volunteer at schools to talk to young girls. Wouldn’t it be fun to take a small group of girls to a thrift store and help them find some outfits that work with their body and essence?
Your voice is so elegant and calm 😭
Could you do series of each archetype who want certain styles but to their essence? For example, I'm a FN, but like chic, minimalist looks. Maybe other FNs like preppy styles. How could each type wear different styles in their essence?
Now you've emerged!! Your analysis of Lucy Liu's lines and essence is illuminating. Your particular method of using the concepts of yin and yang, to delineate one's style and intangible energy is brilliant and entirely reasonable. No more boxing individuals into a few simplistic types alone. You demonstrate an acuity in this realm that I believe for me, will be far more effective and relevant than mere Kibbe typing. Thank you Elyssa 🙇🏻♀️
WOW! I’m floored by your response!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
I got to meet Cameron Diaz in 8th grade, and you’re absolutely correct-she’s most approachable and warm/kindhearted! 🥰 I’m 38 now, but still have the picture somewhere. Btw, thank you for this informative & enlightening video! I think my new favorite dinner question will be; “if you were a genre of dance, which dance style would you be?” 😍
Okay. This is so amazing. Answers many incongruities I have with strict Kibbe. Essence is new or less defined for me so I’d like more information in that area. Thank you so must for this very well presented “class.”
Deborah Haberer content in essence is definitely in the works!! 🙌🏻
This was so interesting, and the most understandable break down of Yin and Yang that I’ve seen. I loved the use of the dance videos. As a 30-something, I also enjoyed your choice of celebs for this one! Thanks for all your work on this.
THANK YOU!! Glad you enjoyed 🤗
i think my name, my style, and my body shape come together to really compliment my personality. i need to remember this when i feel low in the self-esteem dept.
This is fascinating! I’m SC, so mainly yin. Just realized I have created a garden that is also yin apart from a couple of elements recommended by a garden designer which are yang! Which now explains why ‘formal’ gardens don’t appeal to me - they’re all about structure and straight lines - yang.
I'm yang cold, bossy, born leader, have straight gaze but also soft natured, good listener, wise and kind hearted. How do I reflect my essence in my outfits when it's so contrasting
As I’ve recently decluttered my closet, I’ve been watching countless videos about how to find my personal style and I have to say that this is by far my favorite out of the dozens I’ve come across. Amazing. Really well put together and informative.
I wonder if you’ll ever continue your series of in-depth type analyses… I’ve fallen down the kibble/body type/color season rabbit hole, and your approach is by far my favorite. I hope you’ll come back to UA-cam someday :)
Belly dancing is also a great example of an extreme yin dance style- even the historical origins express this, as it is supposed that it developed as a way for pregnant women to open up the hips to prepare for childbirth. Swing dancing seems to express a very Gamine yin essence to me.
That's incorrect information...open the hips? Where'd you read that?
@@adrienne3802 it is a common idea. Look it up yourself. I have heard it from multiple sources
@@byssabyss sources like what...I did look it up. All it says is it originated in Egypt, where I'm from, born and raised, and Ive never heard that. It was originally just entertainment..and remains that way...nothing about birth
@@adrienne3802 I looked into it and it is a very common idea, but can't be proven one way or the other. As I originally said, it is thought to have its origins in this, I did not say that it is proven. So perhaps learn to read a bit better. Something can't be incorrect if it is not being claimed to be true.
@@byssabyss bro what they asked for for a source
Trust me bro isn’t a source
Maybe you should actually have facts to back up your claims rather than attack someone and tell them they need to read more 🤦🏽♀️
This video essay is amazing !!! I’m a flamboyant gamine and actually have accepted that I fall into the gamine essence since I was a child even, with a little bit of classic essence. It’s so empowering to know this and take it as a strength rather than.... say, wanting to be something more delicate. Having Yang in your body/essence is beautiful too 💕
This video is absolutely amazing! Love hearing more about essence. Thank you so much for all the effort you’ve clearly put into this.
Your observations and way of teaching is great 🙏 I don't think anyone on UA-cam creates this kind of content except you .. i love those observations ❤️
Thank you for the video! I appreciate this perspective of the body types, it feels more fluid. I’m looking forward to what you are making next.
Wow! Best explanation of yin/yang I’ve ever seen!
Well done!
Thank you Teresa 💛 Can’t wait to send you your analysis😉
Brilliant!! I already loved this channel, and my admiration only keeps on growing! Looking forward to the other videos on this series! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
This vid was all levels of fab! Your clear and articulate presentation really helped me flesh out a more workable understanding of these principles. Both your knowledge and the transmission of that knowledge are excellent. Thank you
Thank you so much for putting in the "table of contents" in the beginning of the video so we can jump forward to see the celebrity that is most like us. I appreciate the minute and second references. Well done, and please keep this kind of content coming! (Kibbe Soft Natural, Soft Summer coloring). You're AWESOME, Elyssa! 💛😊
I can watch this the type of video all day! You did your research and as a scientist I love it. Thank you😊
Great video! I've been very confused with all the archetype stereotyping and celebrity bikini shots so this really cleared it up for me. Thank you for putting in the time to make this video simple and detailed. Also I love your presentation, you speak in such an elegant and clear way but you still come of as personal. I think that's very hard to nail!
This is such a helpful and interesting video, Elyssa, thank you for sharing your knowledge. In case no one has suggested this to you, you should totally write a book on this - especially given the last one was published over 60 years ago!!
This was a very well thought out, delivered and clear video. I can’t wait to learn more from your channel
Yay! I have been looking forward to seeing this video for the longest! Thank you!
Amazing video! Thanks for all your effort, definitely doesn’t go unnoticed!
Wow just amazing explanation of ying yang! I finally understood how to apply these in the kibbe test! Thanks so much!
Outstanding video with clear examples and descriptions. I loved it !
Thank you for this video!! So well explained😍 As a Flamboyant Natural, my essence is definitely on the Yang side, this is so helpful!! Can’t wait for your in depth videos!
Loving this already !!!! More more more !!!!! Please 💗
I never understood ying and yang and essence till now. Thank you for being so clear!
AMAZING!!! The type of content I love! ✨✨
You’re incredibly thorough and well spoken, amazing video!
Wow!! A ‘whoppingly’ amazing video! Thanks for your brilliant insights. I found this so interesting and so enlightening. Much food for thought! You’re an excellent teacher. Loved it. Thanks!
Wow, wow, wow! Thank you for this incredibly informative video. I've never heard anything about this but you just took styling one's self to a whole other level. THANK YOU!
“It’s just not working out” - Elyssa weighs in on my wardrobe
Haley Powell bwahahah sometimes it just has to be said 😆
Elyssa I’m pretty confident that I’m a soft natural and I’m trying to start curating my wardrobe, but I’m looking at where I’m starting and OY VEY
Haley Powell my unsolicited advice.....start with simple silhouettes. Find a pair of staple jeans in the proper cut and one or two tops that are complimentary. Starting with silhouettes feels less overwhelming based on my experience.
Elyssa spot on! A lot of my inspiration revolves around the laid back, classic minimalist style (like the video you made!) and the cut of the jeans is key. It’s funny that I’m a soft natural bc I find I’ve been gravitating towards those lines for a while. Thank you for your help! I’m eager to see what else you have in store!
Great channel! Absolutely loving your content. New fav UA-cam discovery 🌸
As a dramatic with a not so severe personality I have a hard time finding clothes. I never ever wore monocromatic looks before realising I'm a dramatic... Because I find it really boring to just wear one (dark) color, it doesn't suit my essence. But it's really hard to find clothes that are dramatic in the cut and fabric while being playfull and artistic in color and/or pattern. Really, really, REALLY forking hard.
You explain things in such a clear way.. So informative and helpful. Thank you .
I found this information thanks to a full moon and a snoring husband, and now I’ve stayed up all night devouring as much as I can! I’m pretty sure I’m a Flamboyant Gamine, even though I’ve been trying to be something like a Flamboyant Natural for far too long. I’m so excited to see this video and get your evolved understanding, because none of the categories seemed to really fit. My birthday is in January, so I’m giving myself a Lux package to get your full analysis!! I live for stuff like this!!!
Hahhha well thank you full moon and snoring husband for connecting the two of us 😆 Yeah it can be hard to try and compartmentalize ourselves especially when celebrities are being used as a metric. I found it much more explorative and rewarding just simply looking at myself through the lens of yin and yang. Well happy birthday from a fellow January baby! Looking forward to meeting you and putting your analysis together 💛💛💛
I’m watching on a full moon too! Perfect content for a full moon.
You have a super power for naming someone's essence! Wish you would do a video on that, but maybe it can't be taught :)
Great explanation! Thank you for this video.
This was terrific!! Thank you :)
Great video! Love the visual examples!
thank you so much for a well informatuve educated video. one of the best iwve seen in a while...
Oh my goodness. I love the use of dance to illustrate. Genius. I am always drawn to Bachata in terms of dance. I am likely somewhere between a theatrical romantic/romantic with a bit of a natural essence. I wonder if that tracks lol. I agree with others. Thank you for the creativity and effort you put into your videos.
Your video’s are sooo relaxing 😌
This was a joy to watch ❤️ I really enjoyed the clear visual representations of each type. After watching this I might think I am a dramatic instead of classic 😮 but maybe I have some more yin essences.
Fantastic lesson! Thank you!
Hi Elyssa! Congratulations for your video! I love the tango and swing analysis! And I love the analysis you did for Audrey Coyne. You are very professional and stick to the point,
THANK YOU 💛
Loved this ...thank you 💛
It’s amazing how easy to understand your method is, I love this videos, please do more! I’m trying to figure out my lines and I’m pretty sure I’m close to Lucy as body type but I don’t want to wear such formal looks every day, I would like more casual outfits choices, suggestions? Or maybe a video that I haven’t watched yet on this subject? Thank you so much you are a pleasure to listen to!
You've made a good research on this topic 👍 Very interesting video!
Brilliant video!
This is amazing!! I really hope you write your own book one day!
Great content and you voice is just so beautiful and sweet. You have articulated body types so well with the examples to❤
Incredible video! Ty
im obsessed
This is sooo interesting ! I love the way you explain things and really apreciate your videos ! thank you for existing haha
This was a máster class❤️
Thank you so much! 07:02 and 07:09 explain so much! It took you just a few words. Bravo!
I also highly appreciate how you emphasise the difference between the use of lets say "dramatic" as an adjective or noun. (around 15:40)
Oh this video is so good! Thank you! ❤
⁷ THANK YOU!!
I find this absolutely fascinating
Wow! Amazing explanation!
I am so grateful to find your channel and I appreciate how much you go into detail. I've learned so much already and I look forward to hearing your updates. I would love to get a better understanding of the Romantic archetype as I feel it's quite varied. I find myself to be a Natural Romantic, but don't know how that looks in terms of style. I hope you'll dissect this in the future ❤️
There is a website that calls natural romantic ' babe next door'. Let me see if I can find it..
Thank you so much ❤️🙏
Loved it! 💖
This is better than just kibbe. It is a broader Outlook on the whole balance
Phenomenal!!! You are a gem!!!! Thank you!!!!
It’s like a masterclass
I'm new to your channel and I'm super amazed by your videos. I'm so excited to finish this video
Thank you so much!
Great video!!
Thank you very much❤️! Please can you educate us more on skin undertones 💕
Liked your choices for these celebrities 😊
Love this. I think it would help to make the checks and x’s green and red with all the pics, or put just the two pics you’re talking about on screen at once 😀
Amazing video :) Thank you.
Great Video!
Wow this was indepth and very explainatory. Thank you so much for making it
Thank you for this video! This is the clearest and most comprehensive explanation I've seen. The design is minimal and doesn't draw attention away which is great. I realize now how yang I am haha, both in physical and in essence.
It would have helped me if the text on the diagrams lit up or was circled as you were saying it. It was hard for me to read the diagram with this amount of text (and spacing) while also following what you were talking about. I do suspect my ADHD is part of the equation though.
I’m obsessed with that Lucy Liu look in the middle of number 3
Elizabeth Blanford it’s cute yet edgy!
Oh wow thanks for the video! I’m a Dramatic but my essence is def quirky and weird. So completely opposite ends of the spectrum. However I know strangers perceive me as ethereal. I always had a hard time combining my dramatic lines to my own personal style and what feels right to my quirky self
Dennice Cisneros my sister in law is in a similar boat. She essentially has a yang body with a very yin face and she’s almost 6 feet tall.
I feel like dramatics can definitely pull through “weird and unusual” with ease! Accessories are your friend when it comes to pulling through the quirky elements....as well as color stories!
Elyssa Yup I always loved Audrey Hepburn’s style and essence, so now I’m trying to find a way to combine that style with my “dramatic” lines that suit me
This was really interesting. I have a few books on Style Types but they mainly focused more on personal style even in their quizzes. My answers were usually all over the place but fell mainly in the Natural/Romantic range because I like soft, comfortable clothes that don't impede my ability to move & low maintenence hair. I have some other books that focused more on the lines of your silhouette without the spiritual yin/yang language--just went from straight to curved & covered everything inbetween as well as scale(prints, buttons, piping, weight of material) &amount of contrast that was most harmonious to your silhouette/coloring (if harmony is desired of course) It was very helpful to analyze clothing in this way since I had training in art/design already. I think it's just difficult to be objective about ourselves & being asked if something is round or sharp, short or long, etc with nothing to compare to is, well, ridiculous. I don't know if my shoulders are broad --compared to what? That was my issue with the Kibbe Test. I happen to have small hands & large feet, how was I supposed to answer that question lol? I think your videos explain everything very well & I really enjoy watching them as a visually oriented person it's nice to see all the examples you deconstruct in your analysis.
Wow I really really appreciate this feedback!!! I’m so glad I can be helpful 💛 There’s definitely more to cover as far as line and silhouette but I felt like it was best to give this very basic outline so beginners have a better idea of where to start. Glad it helped you out!
Can you name some of your books? That would be really nice and helpful, sounds so interesting :)
Please add the link to your analysis website in the description box of all your videos! This should have a lot more views in the future and you should get all the business other youtubers have skipped out on, lots of people have been waiting for something like this
It’s added and here’s the link for those who come across this comments as well

Thank you for your support and good looking out! 💛
Best video explaining this methodology I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot...
I love the way you break it down & customize it. Out of curiosity, how do you draw the lines on the photos? Is there a certain program or app?
Bethany Johnson first off THANK YOU!
I have a drawing pad 🙌🏻 one of the best investments I’ve made!
Hi Elyssa! Just found you thanks to the lovely Audrey Coyne :-) This was really interesting, I am already starting to look at myself with different eyes (in a good sense!)
Welcome! And that’s amazing!! 💛💛
great work on the video
( though I find the chart a bit confusing as I find the dynamic playful moxiemore of a lighter yang than an actual Yin essence... from my reading of the earlier books).
happy to have discovered this video. i am commenting 5 mins in and am already impressed. . Your case studies of Charlie's Angels is cute but I am wondering if your analysis and methodology will apply to me as a petite busty and curvy Black women i will revert and give my conclusions.
Just adding a comment to help with the UA-cam algorithm. Because this video is great.
💖💖💖💖
Elyssa: "Drew Barrymore has a small waist" Me: *takes off imaginary glasses and peers into screen "Where?" lol. Love this video and agree with everything else. I'm glad to see your channel has grown so fast!!
Hahahaha I feel like it’s more of an exaggerated curve than a “small waist” 🙈 She actually has such a unique balance. She’s not the typical romantic. I feel likes there’s a hint of natural somewhere in there 👀 Further investigation may be necessary 🧐
Do these characteristics change over the years? I am thinking of Baby Boomers who might have been young, bouncy and slim in their twenty's who are now much older maybe more serious and thicker around the middle. Do you have any examples of people as they age and what happens? How much should their fashion change? Are they still in their original category?
i think the consensus has always been that your body type doesnt/shouldnt change because it should be largely focused on bone structure, so weight gain/loss shouldn't make a difference (but its not uncommon for people to lose weight and discover they are a bit more angular than they thought)
However, your essence can change- essence is much more fluid and can change frequently, so you would stick with your original body type but add more yin/yang to suit your essence
i personally think as you age, you should pay a bit more attention to your vertical lines! the older people get (especially mums), the more they seem to want to wear wider and longer lines?? LOL
I wear TR lines but with a little bit of quirkiness. For example, a top which is tight and cinched into my waist and has a pattern with ducks on it. Just a hint of quirk otherwise it's just too much.
Perfect! This is exactly what I’m talking about 🤗
I do something similar with SD lines (I'm an SD) -- I wear bright colours or fun, big patterns to honour my Ingenue undercurrent. My essence is a combo of dramatic-romantic-classic-ingenue, tbh.
Very nice, thoroughly enjoyed. You should check out Tribal Fusion belly dance, pretty interesting combination of yin and yang! Also Zouk dance as a great sensual yin example xo
Dear Risa, could you speak a little more about yin/yang in Tribal Fusion? I'm a belly dancer too, but with little info on TF.
Thanks a lot! 🤩
@@leanaaymorejacob1211 As far as I can tell, much of Tribal Fusion dance is a Masculine version of a feminine art form... so it is still fundamentally deeply feminine, but much tribal fusion technique can get super technical with super fine precision with all movements especially the arms (whereas arms aren't too much of a central focus in traditional bellydance).
I see a lot more women with different body types in fusion also... for much of traditional bellydance, I do sense that some curviness and weight actually is needed to get the full affect of the art form. In TF however, you see a lot more variance on body types, with many huge fusion superstars having quite athletic figures with little body curve or fat (not that having one body type is necessary, I just mean for the flexibility of this particular branch itself). I think this is because much of the range of movement is in the extreme muscle technicality, and so having juicy flesh isn't as necessary to achieve stunning visual affect.
In this way, it's a little more androgynous... you even see some men here and there pulling off tribal fusion pretty decently. Again, I think for this reason.
Love your videos!!!! They inspired me to start my own channel on kibbe in my style. Definitely yours comes closest to my own. And I have learned so much from you!!
Omg that’s so awesome!!! New subscriber to Rose Colored Glasses 🤘🏻
Oh my goodness! That’s so sweet 🙈
I can see how this method works in a way. I just think there's more to it. Perhaps all the methods combined would work best. I looked at Drew Barrymore and saw fellow Piscean in her style. The soft demeanor yet chameleon at times, boho once, goddess next.
It seems this method is mostly about how you feel about. I have hard time to picture myself in one or two categories and if so I feel I'm the two opposites. My style is changing with age. Being 45 I changing my style from low key, casual, sporty into more classical.
Generally I think there's no right or wrong, if you feel comfortable and confident .... wear it.
I love your video and hard work! But i have to say, the hand movements really REALLY distracted me that i had to cover them to continue the video. I couldn't focus unless i did that. Anyways great job!
This is the first time I'm hearing about this methodology in styling and it MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!!
Do these 'adjectives' apply to men as well? Would be great to see a breakdown of this for men!
If you know anybody doing this please recommend! I'll be searching for it now myself.
Thank you for the work you do!
They do apply to men! Currently working on a men’s video😉
Elyssa is very good. The UA-cam channel Style by Rita also has a whole series for men as well which is really well done. Worth checking out. It actually helped me find my essence
Lucy looks good in everything TBH
