@@user-dz8kk6gr5s In the UK a criminal conviction is no bar. MP's will only be automatically expelled from Parliament if they receive a sentence of over a year, although an automatic recall would be triggered for a sentence lower than that.
Fiona Onasanya was convicted of perverting the course of justice and was sentence to three months, but was still allowed to vote while wearing a tag, until her final appeal failed. She was subsequently expelled following a recall vote. If she had won that vote there would be nothing stopping her taking her seat and standing again.

It's quite telling that the couple of phone-ins I've seen from LBC about this have women overwhelmingly condemning the idea of a perpetrator of this kind of crime as an MP, whereas men are more likely to to be swayed.
I'm on the side of the women here. There is still a massive problem in this country of male violence against women, and I've heard stories from almost every woman I know where they've had similar experiences. Enabling a man with that record to be admitted to the house of commons, regardless of whether or not he has changed, is simply validating that it's not only a common issue but one that isn't being taken as seriously as it should.
My heart goes out Charlotte and the many, many other women who have experienced abuse.

All voters must be able to run for office and voters must be fully informed as to who they are voting for. This should have be disclosed and the women in the constituency should have voted accordingly, of course men too. I don't like going into a constituency office with my problem when the MP doesn't wear my political colours.

If he has been to prison and served his sentence, if we say he is no longer allowed to do particular things then when do they earn the right to partake in these things? Is there a statue of limitations or are we writing them off?
Also, James keeps ascertaining he attacked an ex but has anyone read the charges and the court papers? Was it an actual attack or was it a mutually violent on both ends? considering that according to most data available in these situations is that both parties in relationships are equally as violent. The only difference is that when things go to far it is usually far more fatal for women. Of Course, victims of DV will have strong opinions but there has to be an argument beyond the emotional trauma.
But the overall feeling is that most people do not believe in true or absolute forgiveness and redemption. Some of the best people I have met in my life at some point were bad people who did bad things but that didn't define them and went on to do amazing things.
