7:20 I know what Linus is talking about, I live in a really big appartment compex in the netherlands and even WiFi 6 isn't really that standard here, I had a standard Modem/Router setup and my wifi got basically drowned by all the other networks around me and when my ISP released their new modem/router combo with WiFi 6 I immediatly signed up for one, received it a couple of days later, set it up and my network was so much more stable and had way more range. So when WiFI 6 becomes the standard here, I will be upgrading to WiFi 6E

What i would love to see is that routers get the capability to automatically change their power output based on how far away a device is, so that the guy next to me in his 30m² appartment isnt blasting 100mW of wifi through the walls, just because the device is configured like that out of the box. It would make much more sense to just lower the output if you dont need it. Most people wont do that tho, even if it would also help themselves, because it reduces interference.
Wifi6 already is a standard, you just have to buy it. Leave your ISP out of this; they might provide you with a router because the majority households are non-technical, but you are always better off getting your own equipment.

Wi-Fi 6E is the big jump that people were expecting. Wi-Fi 6 basically was incremental. I've read pretty much all the documentation available, I have no idea why they named them as such.
Because it's a tech standard. Apparently, they need to be named as confusingly as possible. We'll probably get something like Wifi 6.1e Gen1 Revision 2.1(a) B Mini x16/32 next.

I personally liked the 802.11ax nomenclature and whatnot, but the wifi 6 rebrand was pretty good. Why are they repeating the same nonsense by adding subdivisions? Wifi 7 is going to end up with wifi 7, wifi 7E, and wifi 7A if this keeps up.
WIFI 7 is around the corner though.
If you read the old names they gave it a proper letter change like it should have been... 5=802.11AC 6=802.11AX 6E if they actually finished it was supposed to be=802.11EHT for Extremely High Throughput. True, Linus seems to be a smart man, he treats them as family, not as disposable employees. That could seem dangerous to some, but it means he builds real trust and they can come to him with any issues.

You can actually break the 1 Gbps limit even with Wifi 6, by switching to 160 MHz channels (assuming your area isn't too crowded, and you are in a region with DFS channel support, or you have Wifi 6e capabilities). I was able to reach a LAN speed of around 2 Gbps between a laptop and a NAS over Wifi 6. However stability and latency of Ethernet is still a key argument for going wired whenever possible.
As for 6 GHz having more channels to choose from, those will quickly disappear as Wifi 7 will allow the use of 320 MHz channels.
With my wifi 6 + Ax200 I can get up to 1.2Gbs link speed

@@bootchoo96 I was looking to see similar comments... after he mentioned 1 gig WiFi I immediately did a test and also got 1.2 gig with my Netgear CAX80. Perhaps it'd be faster but that's the top speed I get via Ethernet as well using a 2.5g network card.
I get 2.3gbps without the NAS, that's my base internet speed lol.

PoE would have been nice, especially at this price point. When I wired my house, I setup for this exact scenario... but with the intention of using PoE for the repeater.
@R4M 845 What's nice is, you don't even need a PoE switch, you can use an injector for a single device, but that's a nightmare if you've got more than one thing. Eventually I'd like my setup to have multiple PoE cameras and save the footage to my own server and dump Ring.
Go for a more light commercial system, ubiquti for example, for PoE networking gear
@@PheonixRise666 That's been where I've been leaning to, but the cost is quite high by comparison, since if I'm going with Ubiquti, I mind as well go all the way. But they're not without flaws as well. I'm miffed that their switches are as expensive as they are, and they can't have something with more than a couple of 10Gb ports when I can buy something from TP Link with 8-ports for a little over $400.
There are PoE to 12V plug extractors if that's important that much.

Yes, however keep in mind there are many orbi systems. At my home we have an Orbi setup with 3 pods for just over €400. It’s still expensive but nowhere near $900 and will do up to 1000mb/s over wifi as well, just no 6E as far as I know
When I was shopping for Wifi6 I really liked the idea of that Orbi you can mount outside .. a bit more than I need but I really liked that they went there.

I had loved orbi when I first got it but I do think that orbi speends are always inconsistent and the speeds just go up and down never stay to the speed that your getting so I do I have the new asus zenwifi proe12 it's way better and consistent

Nice! Just upgraded our place couple months ago now with the new orbi 960 6e system.. ($1400/3pk) after about 15 years of being on a cheap ddwrt flashed tplink setup. 3 story / 6,000sqft and can now roam all around, even outside, at max isp speed. It's life changing. Finally, can lounge in hammock by the pool and still have amazing internet. I was actually doubtful it would be that good but it exceeded expectations by a long shot. Been rock solid too. No hiccups or restarts, which is way different than things were back in the day. Love it!

I lived in a building with buildings around, during the day my wi-fi barely reached the kitchen, during the dawn i could use it in the front of the building (i lived in the third floor). But i don't expect 6E to ever have this problem because the amount of band available is just too much
We got these last week for my store (I own a comic shop) and they're awesome, our WiFi is now blisteringly fast (we have 2Gb fiber internet). Ping rates were cut in half, and throughput doubled, compared to our 6 y/o AC mesh system. Yeah, they're expensive, but have you priced good commercial mesh systems lately? 😬

Every now and again they'll do a 'distance' test where they run around in the LMG hq but I really dont have a sense of scale of where they are. Would it be possible to have someone at LMG make a map of the facility so we can track roughly where they are? I think that would help a lot in videos like these
Electronics can cause interference too, so if the LMG team could also add the position of all the motion sensors and CCTV cameras to the map that would be really helpful!

Been running 3 ASUS Zenwifi XT8s (predecessor to these) in my residence and they've been pretty good, we usually have 25+ devices connected at a given time so the switch to Wifi 6 was huge. Will definitely be considering these.
@Defective Degenerate me too aside from the occasional drop in signal forcing me to reset the network cause one node feels like just flashing for all eternity 😅 took over a year for me to have any issues though so that’s a plus
ET12 Well worth it. I upgraded from an Orbi RBK53, router died but the two satellites still works. Orbi is also quite expensive, the comparable AXE11000 Orbi is $1499 (but you get three units). One thing that sucks on the asus is the device limit on profiles 64 I think. My 1gbps WAN comes in with a 2.5gb ethernet connection from the fiber modem and I get 950+mbps speed test.
I just purchased the little brother to these, the ZenWifi XT8. I live in a very vertically oriented apartment where running an ethernet cable to connect the router and the satellite in a wired backhaul setup is not practical, so I've got them set up in a wireless backhaul mode right now (using one of the two Wifi 6 5GHz wifi bands solely for communication between the two nodes). I should note that we've got a gigabit internet connection.
I plugged my GFs gaming PC into the satellite over an ethernet cable and ran a speed test.
900mbps over Wifi (!) 30 feet away and with several walls in between! Sub-10ms ping too.
Admittedly, going Router > Satellite > PC all over WiFi dropped speeds considerably. But connecting the PC to the satellite with an ethernet cable made a huge difference.
Suffice to say, technology (and Wifi 6) is cool.

This is tempting to upgrade to. My Eero system is working pretty good with all my IoT stuff connected to it. Just wish I had some more advanced configuration I could do with it.
I have the original Eero Pro 3 pack but I'm considering getting the Asus ET12 2 pack and using MoCA adaptwrs for wired backhaul. I don't necessarily have any issues with the Eero, I just don't like that Amazon is just datamining me and you can't do anything with the router without paying for a subscription.
2.5 Gbps MoCA I'd say is the way to go if you want to run a wired connection through your home for it since you can use existing cables and even most splitters already work.

What I like is, that even though top 2 ports are 1gig, it supports link aggregation, great for my both workstations and Mac pros
In my home I use a MoCA backhaul. Although it's definitely not as fast as an Ethernet cable would be, it's *FAR* easier than running Ethernet (because the Cable TV coax is already run everywhere in the house) and it's definitely faster than the WiFi backhaul was. I get easily 500 megabits from my mesh node to my main router now -- back when I had the WiFi backhaul it topped out at 200 megabits, assuming no one else was using the mesh node's WiFi. Well worth the cost of a couple of MoCA adapters, and it was super easy to set up.
Going from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6 made playing my Oculus with air link go from pretty much unplayable to legit better than the official link cable
I like this, but I also like the Cat 6a STP 100M reel I got for $60 and the 300M UTP reel I got for $60.
This double pack of WiFi units is nice and all, but it did seem like I heard most of those features somewhere before.
Here in Europe, especially Germany, we have the FritzBox Lineup from AVM. They usually come with built in cable modems or fibre for the highest speed models, but those can still be used standalone if you have an external modem.
They don't support WiFi over 6GHz (yet) but still respectable speeds of up to 4800mbit over dualband WiFi (I cannot verify this in any way).
Besides that, they also support loads of other features including VPN connections to your home, serving as DECT base for landlines that they can also route to your smartphone via app, smarthome features and even cable tuners for some models. They also seem really robust on the software side and hardware side.
If you guys would like to test these out, I'd be happy to act as a proxy to make sure you can get your hands on them.
My solution at work was to change to wifi 5ghz, and add some more routers in tandem. By smart linking, it allowed devices to rollover without notice or dips. Range was prob reduced, but four $100 routers covers the entire floor. We used a smart hub, to connect the modem to all the routers.
Since Wifi 6e is so new and expensive you'll have the early adopter advantage for a while since no one else will be using the 6ghz band. You wouldn't want the normies to be slowing down your speeds.
Keep in mind that with the 6GHz band, the transmit power is much lower. Due to arbitrary regulations, in every country so far that allows it, limits transmit power to 250mW, though on average it will useless due to the annoying PSD (Power Spectral Density) requirement. Basically instead of a fixed transmit power where the lower the noise floor, the better the effective SNR is, 6e requires a method that maintains a fixed (much lower SNR) above the noise floor, up until you reach the max allowed transmit power. This is why the 6GHz band thus far is having a far quicker throughput dropoff with range, even on channels that are close to the upper range of the 5GHz band, there the material attenuation difference is negligible.
Beyond that, since the 6GHz band is shared by a number of fixed wireless providers and organizations. In order to use anywhere near the limit, the tech also requires location data and uses a system similar to the drone flight restrictions systems, to disable channels that are licensed for use in your area by any organization. Without that, it uses a more restrictive indoor set of limits operate with less power and behave like using DFS channels.
So what country to set to get highest power?
@@risharehraje793 Currently everyone is largely following the FCC limits, but enabling or disabling channels depending on the region. Even with the standard more finalized in 2024, the transmit powers were not improved.
I've had a pair of Asus XT8s and they've been rock solid for over 2 years.

Now to wait until 6E gets into something that doesn't cost rent.
Well I'd probably still prefer Unifi LRs + Router (for ~300€ + Router), just because the management is so awesome and the Wifi 6E isn't that huge of a deal for Europe apparently (because the band is smaller)
Its still three 160Mhz channels and as nobody is using it you'll still get all the benefits.
Hopefully by the time it becomes a problem due density in apartment complexes the EU will wake up and unlock the rest of the band. But even if they don't, WiFi 6 itself should coexist with other WiFi 6 networks better than WiFi 5 does. Plus we still have 5Ghz to fall back on, so if devices are spread across the two bands you have a better chance of maintaining a decent speed.
@@alexatkin Yeah it's not totally useless of course, but it wouldn't be as big of a deal that I'd spend a lot of money on it and giving up my manageability with unifi, especially since the only device that currently supports it is my Desktop, which of course has ethernet and it'll probably take some time until many devices have 6 or 6E (yes many current devices support it, but you probably don't replace them every year). Also I don't think the EU can even expand the frequencies much more, because looking at the plan from the Bundesnetzagentur, those frequencies are already shared by the military, satellite uplink, radar and others, so I don't think they can really put even more devices on those frequencies and you can't really change the frequency of many of the devices already on those bands.

This is very similar to the 6th gen Apple Airport Extreme, but of course next gen and even faster! I upgraded our home WiFi from a 4th gen AirPort Time Capsule (4th gen Airport Extreme + 2 TB NAS) to having 2 of the 6th gen ones (one in each end of the house, wired together) and it is SO much better of a setup for us! Long term if we got faster internet this sort of thing could be a nice drop in replacement/upgrade a few years down the line (especially once price drops!)
Entirely on a tangent, I'd LOVE to see a renewed review of that folding phone.
Still cheaper than Orbi per node, and likely way more configurable given Asus' other routers.
We have an Asus wifi 6 mesh system... and being the home network admin, I've got some thoughts...
Overall its a good system for the money. The ui is very easy to use and it has a dedicated chanel to link the base station to the satellites. What I've not been happy with is the satellite unit randomly losing its configuration after a power failure. Forcing a total system reset. The other issue, a connection bug that my Galaxy S9 seems to experience almost daily.
Overall, would buy again.
Which routers/mesh system? I am bashing my head trying to choose.
@@SerCommander If I remember correctly, it's the XT8 2 pack system. Have one base unit plus an extender/ repeater. What I liked about them is the delicated wireless channel for the mesh network in addition to 2.4g and 5g modes.

I don't think I'm ready to spend that much money in a home WiFi setup, but if it can work well with cinder block walls, it looks like I'll need to pay that price.
I think that it is more about ac/wifi4 over 2.4GHz rather than 6e over 6GHz.
Forget it, it won't I live in a country with real walls and the higher the frequency the lower the range by a lot
Keep in mind that the higher the frequency, the less penetration power - while it did work well from far away, a lower frequency (i.e. 5GHz or 2.4 GHz) at same transmit power would have a better signal strength at Linus's distance. Granted, it may be worth the tradeoff to have a higher frequency, lower signal strength, if the connection is still stable enough for your uses.
@@nicknack125 Also, you need to note that while the AP have all that power, the client may not have it. So yeah, you have "signal" but can respond.

Finishing hardwiring the home.. Probably this week.. And I'm thinking of asus routers to work as access points as well as a small switch.. Hopefully that works without much problem
We have 2 zenwifi ET8 nodes at home and I love it. Our house is so horribly setup and is like all walls, you’d either get good wifi in the bedrooms, or good wifi in the living room. No way to get both with 1 router
For second, I thought Linus & Yvonne were actually going to have twins. If that was the case, they probably should get some more rooms prepared at the new house.
Speaking of which, I probably would’ve speculated if these routers would be used at the new house if Linus didn’t already set up multiple access points with range accessible from across the block.

I wired my cousin's house with 4 ethernet wall outlets and used 4 ASUS routers with AI Mesh to create a custom mesh network in their house. 2000 sqft house with a workshop in the backyard that is AC controlled. I wired each router with cat 5e and setup a wired backbone mesh setup. Literally every corner of their house now has wifi 6 gigabit internet. It's a pretty nice setup and one I plan on doing for my home. Total cost was just shy of $900 bought at BestBuy for their 2 year warranty in case a unit needs to get replaced. Mom, dad, son and daughter are all gamers. They all have smartphones and the mom works from home. I even ran underground conduit to their workshop and ran ethernet from the main router to the workshop so they have full strength signal in the workshop.
Pretty nice setup.
Using ASUS AI Mesh was stupidly easy to setup and so far works flawlessly. They've been running this for over a year now without hiccups.
So far I've been impressed with the AI Mesh system as a whole.
MOCA adapters are a great way to run the wired back haul if you have coax run through your house. I use this with two orbis and get full 1 gigabit speed from either device. They have 2.5 gigabit moca adapters also, but I haven’t tried them. They’re great for older houses.
I was actually expecting to see moca built into a device of that cost.

I too have a HUB routers setup with tplink m9 2pac with wired backhaul and it was THE most needed requirement in my house honestly but was sad as 3 months later after a costly 300 dollars ish cost of everything except my net... i am confident that wired backhaul is the shiz!
Since you have two of them i would like to see what the units do through out your building. Nice throughput with just one.
I have their RT-AX92U that is tri-band 802.11ax (not the 6E extension) and still can hit 950 Mbps down/up on it but not anywhere near the range of the APs they showed in this video
Our isp is the ultimate genius. I had a terrible Wifi connection at home and always wondered why. I am living the appartment life and yes 2.4 is cluttered, but no.... I was always in 5 Ghz. Then I looked at insssiders scans and what did I see there? The automatic channel algorithm did the following: it put ALL 5 Ghz connections on top of each other with a 160 with, just so it can theoretically do very fast speeds.
Now I change it manually to 20 or 40 width and look for a place to sit on my own with stable wifi. Once in a while all the other routers join on top of me and I have to change my channel again. Happy for 6E coming, I tell you. At least the internet box has a 10Gbit port, which doesn't deliver even 2, but hey a little over 1 is still pretty good.
If it's anything like the nighthawk mesh system I have the wired backhaul works through switches so you probably didn't need to run a dedicated wire, just used 2 existing ends.
Question to more knowledgeable people, why don't we have wireless adapters or access points that connect directly to the modem that only have the new bands (like 5 GHz and 6 GHz) as a way to upgrade and update your wireless system without having to spend on a completely new router or access point? I understand there has to be some internal communication to sync everything but it isn't doable? I've always wondered why I can't just buy a 6 GHz adapter to connect to my router and be able to take advantage of the new standard

In densely populated places like Bangladesh, people still uses the 2.4 ghz wifi literally everywhere even now . I was the only one to buy a 5ghz router among my friends I know of, which was like 1.5 years ago. I get like 15-20 2.4 ghz wifi signal in my room and people still use it crazy
I was getting nearly gigabit speeds with a first gen Asus Rapture on the other side of the house YEARS ago. I did have to buy the Asus PCI expansion card for my desktop. But it was more than possible in 2018 while spending half as much.
That's a 4x4 5ghz client though at 160M channel widths. The new standards get these speeds on little 2x2 clients in laptops, phones and practically all desktops.
You don't even have to go 6E to get those speeds as well. The theoretical link rates are the same between 6 and 6E. Just in practice, 5Ghz can be crowded and therefore slower.

Upgarding most laptops and as a matter of fact also most desktops to 6/6E takes only one 25 bucks order on Aliexpress and a screwdriver. We dont need new PCs from ground up as Linus said. My experience is only incompatibility of newer inbuilt bluetooth versions with much older systems. I for exampe replaced Killer AC1550i wireless card with Intel AX210 (6E) in my Legion Y740 and all works incl BT, but for Yoga 500 after replacing original AC3160 with AX200 (6) only WLAN works but not BT.
I have a wired backhaul on my 2 AX6100s one upstairs on one side of the house and 1 in the basement on the other side of the house. I have had zero issues with it (Minus it wanting to update but updates one and not the other and disables my switch, its a fix from my phone 2 buttons but still) I can only imagine how fast these would be.
For two units this is actually not a bad price at all. Damn asus, good job!

When i see videos for product like these, i always wonder if Asus recently send you an older product or if LTT just had the product in storage and on the backburner for months until they got around to making a video about it? Because it seems weird that you guys are reviewing a AXE11000 mesh wifi system when there are already AXE16000 mesh systems out now, even by Asus.
Edit - Guess that 1 month jump cut kinda points to this, so include the time it took for Asus to originally send the product, plus whatever amount of time it sat in LMG's warehouse before being scheduled for a Short Circuit.. yeah a newer spec came out in that time.

I did something similar with 2 Asus' AXE-11000. You can find open boxes at B&H and NewEgg (urgh) for ~$400.00 a piece.
You need to test it on faster than 1gb internet connection - or moving local files. I can get 800mbps on an Asus XT8 in the same room, showing me +140mbps is not a reason for a $900 upgrade - but if it maxes out at say 2gbps wirelessly then I might be interested.
What is not mentioned is that some of the features in the Asus panel require you to share analytics data with Asus and even third party companies to use them.

Linus, you guys should go more in depth about how WAPs/clients communicate and why co-channel interference from surrounding networks can really hamper their network performance, and why channel selection/width is a big factor in getting desired results from a WiFi network.

I currently use a 3 node orbi system with wired backhaul. (Pulled new Ethernet cable through the old phone line for this purpose)
i've heard 6ghz often has smaller antennas or something and that suppsoedly with higher wattage radio it could go further but, not sure i buy that as i'd think OEMs would do that if it was possible that or FFC / radio regulations

There are very few consumer-grade routers that have ethernet ports faster than gigabit for both WAN and LAN. This is one of the very few. The other is a single-unit router from Asus (AXE 16000) that is $200 cheaper (for one unit). The other is the $1500 mesh Orbi.
Every other consumer WiFi router I could find that had multigigabit Ethernet only had it for WAN, but the LAN ports were all 1 gigabit Ethernet.
That's why they can get away with charging so much money. Your choices are basically $700 for a single router, or $900 for a two-node mesh, or $1500 for a 3-node mesh. If you get more than one gigabit per second from your ISP and have the infrastructure for multigigabit Ether net devices, those are your only options right now.
The AXE 16000 is quad-band, so if you use AI-Mesh with another router that has two 5GHz bands, you can have a dedicated backhaul, but you have to be picky about what other device you use and configure it all yourself.
The ET12 only has 3-bands (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz), so if you don't use a wired backhaul, you're sacrificing Wi-Fi bandwidth.
The Orbi Mesh AXE11000 has two 5Hz bands, one of which becomes the backhaul if you don't connect them via Ethernet.
Linus, you just made me buy it since it was available on Amazon. This will simplify my setup since I don’t need as many 10Gbit switches to make all access points able to get over 1Gb speeds. So I can sell the xt8 ones I have, and one of my Mikrotik switches.
Why would you need 10Gbit switches to get Gigabit speed? I mean if you're accessing a NAS then sure, having multiple APs each on their own port, but you still only need one Gigabit port back from each AP to the switch the NAS is plugged into.
You could run server side channel und time based wireless lan to get more consistent speed and latency but most wifi devices aren't able to connect (it's not wifi). It's sometimes used by very special wlan equipment (you MUST set the power level and the frequency manually and you are liable for your settings as the devices don't check if you are allowed to do that).
400 USD for a high connection commercial wlan accesspoint? It's in the normal price range for 100+ simultaneous connections (mikrotik, cisco, ubiquiti).
For my home I switched back to a max. 25 connection 2,4Ghz accespoint powerd from USB to save energy (you might find 50mA and 100mA access points if you look around - not WLAN power but total power).
Screw that noise, I just run a powerline system.

It is possible to get 6E on an older laptop: as long as it has a replaceable wifi card. I have one older laptop that I had replaced its card a little while ago. Have upgraded my router to 6E, and saw that it saw the 6Ghz band, and downloads at nearly ethernet speed (great considering my previous router was having issues, and the laptop's upload was under 9MBps at its normal distance).
Still considering the upgrade to a wifi 6/ax router. The only device with ax on my network so far is my own PC. Nobody else uses ax, around 5 devices with ac and the rest is still on wifi n.
I think it's pipes and things like that that are between normal walls and you just have drywall would be the reason why it's not suffering like you'd expect. I am not an expert but putting idea to see if anyone has different thoughts.
So what was the fix? Was it just a firmware thing? Replacement hardware? Regulatory changes hadn't taken effect yet and the devices were playing nice at the time?

While this stuff is great in theory, as someone who HAS Asus AImesh devices, even on wired backhaul with 2.5g ports, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. I often have to reset the access points or remove one from the mesh and re-add it, devices often fall off the WiFi and or lose internet for no reason. Also the 5ghz wireless on the AIMesh device is SUPER flakey and I get lag spikes a lot.
