Hey, I have final solution for everyone! If you will buy ANY hub for thru axle with Boost (like 12x148) with possibility to replace end caps for quick release, you will get 141 mm width. End cups will adjust width from 148 mm thru axle to 141 mm QR. I have done it with Mavic CrossMax 29 Boost 12x148 (R2468110) and Mavic QR ID360 end cups 9x135 (V2510801). Final width is 141 mm. And you can do the exact same with DT Swiss, Hope, Bontrager or any hub with replaceable end cups. Mavic is probably the cheapest, you can do it for around 140 EUR. Other mentioned brands are 180 EUR for Bontrager and 220 EUR for DT Swiss and Hope.

This made my day, didn't realise Hope did a conversion kit and those Forumla hubs are far from optimal and I've heard a lot of people slate those specific ones.
Lacing wheels is tedious, but extremely rewarding. There are a ton of videos here on UA-cam that will show you how to do it. Hope hubs are extremely sturdy, but out of my price range, where function and cost are concerned. It sounds great though.
Just ordered an Industry 9 Hydra rear hub for my Roscoe 8. Can’t wait to get it laced up! That stock rear hub is ATROCIOUS! Just an FYI for anybody looking to upgrade a Roscoe to save you some headache, I9 offers their hubs in boost 141 qr so you don’t have to mess with converting a 148 hub, and they offer all driver bodies so they’ll work on any drivetrain. They also offer their hubs in 28h so it’ll work with the stock Bontrager Line 40 rims.

I got a roscoe 8, had to put the upgrades on hold cause I'm in the process of buying a supercaliber 9.7, can't wait until she is home, naming her Kelly, kelly caliber, my roscoe 8 is called Tracey trek!!!
Good to see I have an option for my Roscoe. I just got mine back after blowing out the rear hub (made it freewheel both ways). Trek did a great job replacing it under warranty though. Wondering how many they will replace. Thanks for the videos, cool to see upgrade option on my exact Bike.
Great vid. Have the same issue with my Cannondale Trail, and those 141 QR hubs are hard to find... One little thing I saw in the video: the valve is not where it should be in relation to the spokes, LBS should have done a better job there, especially when you expect them to be the experts in the matter
Yeah someone else already pointed that out, kinda bummed they didn't do a better job, they also failed to install the provided spacer between the cassette and hub, I had to do that myself. Overall not impressed with them on this. Gonna take the wheel to a different shop that is highly recommended and get them to sort it out. I know the wheel is functionally fine, but I'd like it to be right.
@@ToogyHowser Hey man thanks for the vid. Definitely folloing suit. Quick question in relation to the above - did the spacer come with the hub or with the cassette? Or did you have to source elsewhere? Appreciate you did this years ago so no worries if you can't remember! Thanks again!
Just got my pro 4 installed on my Salsa. Basically same setup as yours. Boost 141 and all. Formula hub. A lot more slop than I was expecting but it sounds cool!
Charles, what cassette are you running? I know I needed a very small spacer between the freehub and the cassette for my SLX cassette. Without it the cassette was loose
nice vid! i was going to get one of these but i decided against it and got the mason 2 from DB instead. comes with a rock shock gold and i liked the frame a lot more.
Why is there this 7mm difference between corresponding QR and TA standards? Is it just that with TA the "locknuts" (as in "O.L.D.", but these are just endcaps with most hubs nowadays) seat 3.5mm inside the rear triangle, and QR "locknut" surfaces seat flush with the frame?
Just ordered rear wheel hope pro 4 boost 148 that I will install in my Marin San Quintin 1 that has a 141 qr boost. Can't wait for the massive improvement because the stock hub is just rubbish 🙄. Thanks for this info Mate. 👍 I already bought the qr conversion kit and just waiting for the wheel to arrive.
Doing the same thing with mine but I chose the DT 350 148 and QR end caps. Received the hub today and trying to decide if I want to buy a new rim or relace the old one.
I just broke the axle on my backup raceface wheelset. Apparently that axle isn't very strong and probably depends on the through-bolt for strength. Just ordered DT 350's with DT XM521's. I am wondering of those of us who are bigger guys (230) shouldn't cut the ends off a maxle and insert it into the axle prior to putting the QR caps on.
@@ToogyHowser Thanks for the answer. I have spare (take off) Syncros wheelset from a Scott bike (Formula CT1702 hub). I asked, if I may have a chance to use it on another boost frame. I'm gonna check if I can replace the end caps. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the awesome video. I am trying to upgrade the rear hub of my xcaliber 7 2021 with Hope Pro 4. For your Roscoe, did you have to change the spoke length with the replacement hub?
@@juanpablojuarez4699 It was a great upgrade. I had dt swiss 288-290mm spoke lengths in 14g for the work. You need to get the QR conversion kit he recommended. I ended up replacing the front hub with the same Hope line and, as well, the pedal with F20.
@@KILLER2280 Yes it was for the stock rim that they sold their xcaliber with. I had Trek measure the spoke length and that's what they were recommending at the time without calling their tech support. I would rather call the tech service for the exact length. Later, the rim had several split, not related to the spoke but rather a corrosion due to riding in the winter (salt). I had the rear rim replaced with Hope Fortus 28. Very happy. I am waiting for something to go wrong for the front rim so that I have excuse to my wife for a new project. Have fun!
Have own a few Trek, and first thing that was ripped off the bikes: the awful Bontrager made wheels. Either Alexrims or Mavic and will do the trick. Sunringle are great rims but seem to use an odd ball axle that are a bitch to work on.
Did you have to shim the brake rotor on the hub out at all so it would mate up with the caliper a little better? I see adapters for the front and rear Hope hubs for rotor shimming is why I'm asking. I too had my my rear hub grinding on me too. I overhauled it, and found the drive side is not sealed up very well, and had all kinds of gunk in there. Its better now, but I know it wont last. My front hub took a dump on my Roscoe this weekend, it too was grinding. When I tore it down, I was missing 1 ball on one side, and 2 on the other. It has NEVER been tore into, that was like that from from Formula Engineering Inc. (Taiwan) if anybody wanted to know. Front hub is a DC511. I want to replace my front hub as well. The grease (what was left in there) was rusty looking. But most likely from dust from the trails getting in there. I'm excited to upgrade my hubs into my factory Sun rims just like you did. I work at a Trek retailer and actually just built a Roscoe 6 today. The frame is the same as the rest of the Roscoe line, just component upgrades as you go up the line. The Roscoe 6 also has a 35mm internal rim width as opposed to the 40mm on the other two
Thanks for this video! I have 2017 trek stache 5 and found that my rear wheel has some weird play left and right. Got to the point that can't really put axle back in order :) after cleaning. My hub is boost 148 12mm axle which came with the bike, so many washers and different nuts, if its too tight cant spin the wheel. so frustrated with that cheap parts.
Michael the 141 x 9 QR Formula Hub I have is from 2017 and from what I have seen is the end caps are fixed. I wouldn’t use this thing on any other bikes tho. It’s better as a paperweight!
Yeah I know but I have the possibility of getting a procal aluminum frame set. And thinking of transferring all my parts from my Roscoe on to that frame. More than likely not what I'm going to do but good to know my options.
Hi! Going to make the same upgrade buying a complete rear HOPE FORTUS 4 PRO wheel for my Roscoe. Did the wheel work well using HOPE HUB238 kit adapters?
So I was just about to place the order for the hub and there are options.. I have an eagle nx 1x12 and that would be the shimano driver i think and the other option is steel or aluminum!!! What do I pick for all the options?! Thanks!
@@ToogyHowser Great thanks! I'm debating between the 2020 Roscoe 7 with that awesome teal color or the new specialized fuse, which has more travel, and boost 148 thru axel, but not as good of a drive train. I'm not too worried about the rear hub if I can upgrade it down the line like you did, but I'm wondering if the thru axel is worth going for because of long term stiffness and easier for disk brakes. What do you think?
Hmmm tough call...what model fuse are you looking at?? Drivetrain is easier to upgrade in the future than a hub though.. and you can do it in stages...
@@ToogyHowser I was looking at the base 27.5 one, which is pretty much the same price as the Roscoe and actually a tad cheaper (9$, if anything). Trek was my first bike and I've always wanted another one. I could wait until next year to see if Trek upgrades the frame but I don't really want to do that. Fuse might be a better investment for the future, it just doesn't look as cool imo haha
What set up do you have today for your drive set. I have an X Caliber 8 with a 2x10, with the Boost 141 as well, and I'm wanting to swap it to a 1x11 or 1x12 with a 46 as the tallest gear.
Hey bud. Can you clarify for me. The links in your description, is the conversion kit and the QR end caps the same thing? When I pull them up on ebay and Amazon they look the same. The end caps also state they convert it over to QR. I have a 2019 Roscoe8 with this same issue and trying to narrow down parts so I can order them and fix it. Hope to hear back from you!
Thanks, same problem here. Just wondering how much you spent on on labour/ how many hours it takes a mechanic to install? Just wondering if I'd rather replace the hub or just the whole wheel. Cheers
It was an hour of labour at the bike shop, I had some issues with the first shop that did the work, so it ended up being a giant PITA! In hindsight I wish I would have just gotten a new wheelset. The Bontrager Line 30's are sweet and can easily be converted to fit Boost 141
You seem to be pretty familiar with the Roscoe 8. If I’m changing out my groups set do you know exactly which bottom bracket I need to get ? Press fit or thread on ? Also When I get a new Hope Pro 4, What’s the difference in the steel and aluminum Shimano adapter ? Plan to change my 2018 sram nx to SLX 1x12
Need help! What about the same problem but on the front wheel? Alpkit Sonder rigid fork have the same weird QR Boost standard (9x110mm) and I do not find any QR Boost hub on the market. Is there any posibility to convert a boost front hub into a QR boost?
I've noticed in the description you've linked the HUB238 but also QR end caps...do I need both of them or 1? may have missed you installing 2 different sets of caps..
Hi. Just wondering why you only replaced the hub rather then get a whole new wheel or wheel set? I have been looking at the same upgrade but once I pay for labour and new spokes to build the hub into my existing rim, the cost is about the same as buying a hope fortus 35 complete wheel. Thanks
Hey Toogy, I'm inspired by this Hub upgrade. Unfortunately, the links in the description above are no longer valid but I wanted to ask if you could update us on the SKUs of the Hope hub and adapter kit components, if you still have that information somewhere? I looked on ChainReactionCycles for these parts and found sku646877 & sku261443.

I have the exact same problem with the 141 Boost Standard on my plus hardtail from Cannondale. The Formula hub is so sloppy. How much did it cost to re-lace your wheel up?
It was $40 CDN plus $1.50 CDN per spoke as I needed new spokes to match the hub. Not too bad and not something I even wanted to attempt to do myself! haha
Toogy Howser MTB totally worth it. That hope hub is sweet too. It’s hard to figure out which companies offer interchangeable end caps. Knowing it works on your bike will prob make me but he same hub soon. Besides. I have dented the hell out of my rear wheel on pointy rocks running low pressures....maybe a whole hope rear wheel is the way to go.
Toogy Howser MTB I’m in the same boat, but you can always buy a new warrantied full suspension frame, and swap on a ton of the parts, making a bespoke build to your preferences. Then you will have a sweet hardtail as a backup frame...or at least to sell for a few hundred. Bedsides, you can’t put a price on the addiction to upgrades!

yeah for the stock Sram NX cassette you'll need the shimano HG freehub. There are a few other hubs/wheels you can use if you can find them, DT Swiss, Bontrager etc.

My Giant Stance came with a QR141 that started making the exact same sound. I assumed it was a cracked bearing or something. Anyways, I'm trying to replace it and I'm glad I found this video because I wasn't finding any wheels that were listed as 141mm. Thanks.
glad it helped you out!
Nice upgrade. I’ll be doing the same to my Roscoe 7.
Thanks so much Toogy, this is the next item on my hit list for my Roscoe, so this really helped.
Glad you found the video useful! New hub makes a massive difference, so nice
Take a look at your cassette at 6:17, i don't think it is secured tight enough..
I got a roscoe 8, had to put the upgrades on hold cause I'm in the process of buying a supercaliber 9.7, can't wait until she is home, naming her Kelly, kelly caliber, my roscoe 8 is called Tracey trek!!!
Nice!!
Toogy Howser MTB subrace 42t 11 speed
Cant wait for Trek to put a thru axle on X Caliber
nice vid! i was going to get one of these but i decided against it and got the mason 2 from DB instead. comes with a rock shock gold and i liked the frame a lot more.
Solid choice! Getting Diamond Backs in Canada seems to be impossible, at least as far as I can tell.
I've got to do that to mine. Just got it out today and it drove me crazy. Thanks
Glad it helped you out!
Hi how did it work our for your SQ1?tks
@@paestsdepends what hub you got Mate, Not all hubs support the conversion kits. Hope does, and that's what I did.
Just installed the Hope SS hub on my trail bike. Nice stuff
Doing the same thing with mine but I chose the DT 350 148 and QR end caps. Received the hub today and trying to decide if I want to buy a new rim or relace the old one.
Yeah that’s a tough decision, in hindsight I probably should have just got a whole new wheel
Great video. Having the same issue with my 2019 Roscoe. Sounds like the conversion kit will do the job.
Thank you
Glad it helped
yooo that so helpful, been looking for this for too long now. Thanks
Glad it helped you out!
Trek Roscoe 8 Toogy Edition! looking good.
haha Yep! Super Custom Edition!
My Trek Roscoe 7 2021 uses a Boost141, 5mm quick release. I would be able to use this hope upgrade on that bike also ??
hi bro, how are you doing, did you manage to update?
Hi, thanks for the videos. Enjoying them a lot. I just wonder is it possible to convert 141 mm hub to 148 by changing the inners parts or so?
Well you could change the end caps if the hub has interchangeable ones, but the frame of the bike is boost 141 no matter what you do
@@ToogyHowser Thanks for the answer.
Hey hello I have an xcaliber 8 any luck with the hub I want to upgrade mine too
@@juanpablojuarez4699 It was a great upgrade. I had dt swiss 288-290mm spoke lengths in 14g for the work. You need to get the QR conversion kit he recommended. I ended up replacing the front hub with the same Hope line and, as well, the pedal with F20.
@@sangcho5356 Hello, it turns out that you put the spokes 288-290mm, did I understand correctly?
Thanks for the video!!!
Changed to Hope Pro4 based on this video. The original skewer sucks badly. Hope make a quality skewer too.
interesting, will have to check that out
Does the roscoe 6 have the identical frame as I much prefer the frame colour! I would then do a fork and Doppler post upgrade
I'm pretty sure it does, I can't see them using a different frame. What colour are you looking at? the Red? looks sweet
@@ToogyHowser yep the viper red but it doesn't have a dropper post and it's fitted with SR Suntour XCM 32 LO which are rubbish
I'd probably fit sum rockshox or fox forks! Rest of kit isn't to bad and I can get it brand new for £600 with a discount code! Id sell the suntour forks as new
I work at a Trek retailer and actually just built a Roscoe 6 today.
Did you have a weird sound when pedaling the crank backwards before? I’m not even sure if it’s the BB or the hub.
not really anything related to pedaling backwards that I noticed.
Question for you, does the formula hub have the same removable end caps. Curious if you can turn the old Hub into a boost 148?
I didn't really look that closely, I'll check it out later today. Not sure why you'd want to do anything with that hub other than toss it haha
Hi)
And you can put 12x142 if you sharpen the spacers yourself?
And whether it will be possible to adjust chain line?
Hi! Going to make the same upgrade buying a complete rear HOPE FORTUS 4 PRO wheel for my Roscoe. Did the wheel work well using HOPE HUB238 kit adapters?
Can you replace and upgrade JUST the cassette body on the original boost148 hub to add a larger cassette for more gears?
So I was just about to place the order for the hub and there are options.. I have an eagle nx 1x12 and that would be the shimano driver i think and the other option is steel or aluminum!!! What do I pick for all the options?! Thanks!
yeah it's a shimano driver and I personally went with steel as it's supposed to last longer and I don't care too much about weight
Re-building an old wheel can be expensive. It might be better to sell the old wheels and buy another wheel set with the desired hub (and endcaps).
Is this same hub as Trek Xcaliber 8 2021 model?
That thing is sweet! 👍
Can both the conversion kits in the description be used, or are they different?
They are the same
@@ToogyHowser Great thanks!
Tony Stone I’m running a shimano SLX 1x11 11-46 setup with a 30T chainring
I have a X caliber 7 2018 and it also uses this hub measure, so thanks for the information and the video!
Glad it helped you out!
I just noticed this on my Roscoe 8. The hub is sloppy. Looks like I'll be doing the same upgrade.
What are the part nunbers for the hub and end caps
Hope Pro 4 12x148 Boost hub with Steel Shimano freehub Part Number: RHP428N148ST and the hub conversion kit is part number HUB238
What company Cassette did you use. Does the Cassette have to match with the rear hub?
Hope to hear back from you!
yes they are the same thing :)
@@ToogyHowser Awesome!! Thank you. That is what I thought. I found the hub and the end caps on Amazon.
@@ToogyHowser Thanks!
I don't know exactly, but it's a threaded bottom bracket, that much I can tell you!
Need help!
What about the same problem but on the front wheel?
Alpkit Sonder rigid fork have the same weird QR Boost standard (9x110mm) and I do not find any QR Boost hub on the market.
Is there any posibility to convert a boost front hub into a QR boost?
I've noticed in the description you've linked the HUB238 but also QR end caps...do I need both of them or 1? may have missed you installing 2 different sets of caps..
just the one set, the HUB238 is for a set of end caps
Do i need the hope pro 4 mtb rear hub-boost 148mm × 12mm for my trek roscoe 8
Hi. Just wondering why you only replaced the hub rather then get a whole new wheel or wheel set? I have been looking at the same upgrade but once I pay for labour and new spokes to build the hub into my existing rim, the cost is about the same as buying a hope fortus 35 complete wheel. Thanks
new wheelset is probably the better option all said and done.
Yeah cool video, I did same thing with my Excal 8 except I used a DT 350 Hub and you can go with an I9 hub to. I had wheelbuilder do mine . Good work no worries
Nice!
I also have a Excalibur 8 29” and converting to a 27.5” but need to find a conversion kit like this for a boost novatech rear hub. Do you know if this conversion kit will
Work
@@kazuarceo sorry can't help , but i like your idea of 27.5 wish i had thought about it sooner than later lol . But if Novatec doesn't have N-caps for your hub then I wouldn't know of any after market places to look . But the only hubs i know of are Hopes , DTs , I9s , Kings and if you're looking to save a few bucks sram 900 is an Economical way to go . But they all need to be a boost hub already so you can convert the N-caps
thanks for the video, I am learning a lot. One question: Can you fit the 29's on a medium size frame rosco 8? or is just on the XL frame?
Yeah there's not much in the size difference between 29 and 27.5+. They even say it on their website that you can go 29 x 2.4
Halp, is the Hub238 conversion kit diffrent from the Hope QR endcap kit, do I need either one, or both???
I have a Roscoe too. My hub is so badly wear out. My freehub has some movement on it. And i cleaned and lubed all the parts. It didn't really help. But i don't have so much money to spent on so high end hub. Is there any hub with Boost 141mm spacing to my frame that is like under 100€?
I have the exact same problem with the 141 Boost Standard on my plus hardtail from Cannondale. The Formula hub is so sloppy. How much did it cost to re-lace your wheel up?
It was $40 CDN plus $1.50 CDN per spoke as I needed new spokes to match the hub. Not too bad and not something I even wanted to attempt to do myself! haha
Toogy Howser MTB totally worth it. That hope hub is sweet too. It’s hard to figure out which companies offer interchangeable end caps. Knowing it works on your bike will prob make me but he same hub soon.
Besides. I have dented the hell out of my rear wheel on pointy rocks running low pressures....maybe a whole hope rear wheel is the way to go.
yeah I considered a whole new wheel, but I've spent WAY too much on this bike already! This is IT for upgrades..... I think... haha
Toogy Howser MTB hahaha 😅
The hub you fitted would it take a micro spline free hub on a Roscoe 8
I have the orange Roscoe 8 like yours in the video. Mine has the SRAM rear derailleur with 11 speeds. When I order a hope rear hub which freehub body do I need to specify? Thank you
you want a shimano freehub, the SRAM NX uses a shimano freehub
@@ToogyHowser thank you!
What size bicycle spokes have you been supplied with?
if you dont mind me asking toogy about how much did this cost.im getting that same sound on my roscoe and it drives me crazy.
it was about $200 for the hub, $20 for the endcaps and $60 for the shop to re-lace the wheel.
My question is since you have to replace the spokes as well, which size, brand, modelnumber, etc spokes do you need to complete the hub swap?
Sorry I just had the shop do that stuff!! sorry can't help you with that
Is this hub on Trek X Caliber 7 ?
Hey Toogy,
Im looking forward to get a roscoe 7 next month, but i notice this boost 141 thing... and this video just solved it, only cuestión is if its a regular qr 9mm axle on any 148mm hub??
it won't work on any hub, only hubs that have exchangeable end caps like Hope, DT Swiss, Bontrager and a handful of others.
Hello, excellent job, I also have 141 boost should do the same, you yourself have changed the core? I see the tire is the same Sun Ringlé, right? 😅
Maybe a dumb question but say I get a hope hub and build a wheel, so I now need a new cassette and maybe drivetrain? Or can I just remove the stock cassette off my roscoe and put it on the new hub and wheel?
Hey what's up great videos, if u dont mind putting a link for the conversion kit im having a hard time finding it
Try this bit.ly/2P7YIlq
you can also search for Hope HUB238 on amazon and it brings up some links
Try this link on amazon amzn.to/2vHGgrK
did you change the cassette? stock is PG and not XG driver?
Have you looked and found anything on upgrading the rear axle to a 10mm bolt through. Ca't find anything about one that will fit the 141mm boost.
I have not found anything like that. Like converting it to 148x12 Boost?
@@ToogyHowser - No, I was trying to go with a 10mm bolt through and get rid of the skewer, as the hub really is a 9mm with QR ends. That was my thinking at least. I know a 12mm through axle will not work with the dropouts.
yeah I don't know, let me know if you find anything out!
@@ToogyHowser - Will do. I got some Fox factory 36's (140mm) ready to mount up for it. Should be a fun little bike.
oh yeah! a 140mm Factory 36 would be super sweet on this bike!
Is there a website showing all the wheelsets or hubs that are 148 that convert to 141 QR?
Omg, i need help, the hub in the link you posted is 12/148 but the replacement washers it says "convert your hope pro 4 10mm to 141" so hope pro 4 is 12mm or 10mm?
Hi I’ve recently purchased the same bike 2nd hand, 2 days later the the rear hubs gone. I’m new to all this but going to try to look for an aftermarket one as I don’t have the money to do it brand new...
So I’m looking for a hope pro 4 148x12 boost, 28 hole, shimano hg? Not sure what the shimano hg is as I don’t see many there mostly xd!!!
yeah for the stock Sram NX cassette you'll need the shimano HG freehub. There are a few other hubs/wheels you can use if you can find them, DT Swiss, Bontrager etc.
Overall how much did this cost and was it worth it?
So Basically what makes the Hub”Boost” are those endcaps?
Helped me!
My rear hub was done after about 20 miles. Poor poor quality.
Glad the video helped you out!
Did you re-use the skewer ? because if i understand boost 141 is a 141×5mm qr, and the endcap conversion are 9mm so 141×9mm qr ? Or you buy a new skewer ? (Sorry for my english, i'm french and i want to do the same on my roscoe 7)
I used the stick skewer without any problems
Toogy may I know if these Maxxis minon dhf/dhr II you used are 2.8's? And where did you get them from? Thanks! =)
Yes they are 2.8’s and I got them off amazon
Thanks Toogy! Do you still have the link on where you got your goggles for your fullface from? Thanks! =)
These are the goggles I have amzn.to/2TMgSPx
Have Giant Fathom 1 with the say 141mm boost hub. The Sram 12 speed cassette on splline hub drive so sloppy. Going for Hope Pro4 hub and Sram XD drive. Exspsive way have getting wright. But reallly like my bike.
sounds like a good idea, you'll need a new cassette if you upgrade to the XD driver, just keep that in mind.
And here I am trying to upgrade my 6 to a Rapid Drive. Are they really that bad?
quick question would this be a more inexpensive alternative Bontrager Line Comp 40 TLR Boost 27.5" MTB Wheel
The bontrager line 30 and 40 wheels are great, I have the line 30s in 29 and they are really good!
@@ToogyHowser so then it will work as an alternative to the hub issue .. the rear wheel is only 200
Toogy Howser MTB do you have the part numbers for bontrager end caps for a 141 boost spacing?
Did you reuse the factory skewer? Is it still 9mm? I’m wanting to do the same thing you did
yep, reused it. All I had to do was replace the hope end caps like in the video
