- These modules are widely sold on eBay as high voltage pulse generators with grossly inflated output voltage figures like 400kV. They put out closer to 20-40kV as 400kV would probably jump about 150mm/6" in dry air.
They are so cheap and mass produced that they must be from a common product, so I decided to test if they were for stun guns by touching the output....
Note that the circuitry in these modules appears to be based on a high frequency inverter with a multiple stage multiplier as opposed to the traditional circuitry I described.

jaaasgoed The UK government banned privately owned and police monitored pistols that were kept for sporting use (target shooting on registered ranges). The idea was to keep guns away from criminals. Now the criminals have lots of guns. Maybe someone in the government found a ready market. Maybe I am getting old and cynical.
jaaasgoed reminds me of getting full black Airsoft replicas, you have to jump through so many hoops and yet you can buy an air rifle if you're 18.
That's one heavy crossbow.
200lbs is not the weight, but the draw-weight. In effect you are putting 200lbs of energy behind the projectile. The traditional English longbow for example had a 100-120lbs draw-weight. You'd have to train to be able to draw the bow back to it's full strength and therefore the most energy goes pushing the projectile. This tends to be true for compound bows rather than the recurve style you see on the Olympics for example. Compounds tend to require enormous physical skill, strength and technique in order to achieve raw power. Recurves tend to ditch that in favour of precision and accuracy.
The idea of draw weight though did transfer over to the crossbow, though it's slightly misleading with modern crossbows. Original crossbows required less physical technique as you could hold it down with your foot and pull back the string using both hands. Equally, modern crossbows have all sorts of ratchets and such that aid in drawing back the string. Ultimately, the crossbow became popular because whilst the longbow required massive levels of training and skill to use well, the crossbow could be used by anyone with minimal training and still achieve a fair result.
No, Denis, the idea was to keep guns away from lunatics! Michael Ryan, Thomas Hamilton and Derrick Bird were all law-abiding citizens up until the day they went on double-figure killing sprees, just as how every perpetrator of a mass shooting in the US is a law abiding citizen up until the moment they snap and kill everyone in their school/college/office building.
If it's any consolation, I once spent a couple weeks of spare time extremely carefully chipping the potting material off one of these modules. The one I've got uses a voltage tripler at the output of the transformer, but does not have any separate stepup pulse transformer. The sparking you're getting is just the discharging of the final cap of the multiplier. I'll send you some photos 😁

I have the same HV Modlue and I built a small tazer.
An important thing to remember about these HV Modules, is to not separate the output wires too far apart or the stored energy cannot jump the wires and end up discharging inside and destroy the module.
About 1 " is good.

It will give you a good shock, but it won't damage you unless you have cardiac issues. No resistor needed. This is very low current and high voltage. Much like a dog shock collar. Have fun...

I used 2 AA batteries with my design. 2 AA Batteries create a nice arc.

I am aware of all of this but I am not in the UK, I'm in Sweden and then it falls under the knifelaw. But the thing is at the moment there is a crimespree in my area and I have weapons, knives and etc but if you used one of them on a person no matter what it'd be assault. Same if you used the taser on them, but the thing is that no criminal is stupid enough to file a report on your for using a taser. With a knife or if you shoot them then it will be obvious you have done something towards them. If I use a taser however just to scare them away, it leaves no mark, they run away and I protect my home. If they even did decide to report that I have an ilegall taser in my home it would be the most retarded thing you could do because then they are revealing that they were the thieves that have stolen from over 50 homes in the last year.
So if I buy this it is to be at home at all times and mostly for scare tactics, if I end up stunning them I will of course call the police but I will remove the taser from my household and there will be zero evidence and I will have caught a criminal, the judges are really nice here and will say I did what I had to do. And considering I stopped future thievering I won't get any fines which I would have gotten. But then again, I could might aswell just use my metal bat I keep next to my door, got a set of gloves and baseballs there so I could get away with that aswell.
I have build one of those inside my insect zapper, which is formed like a tennis racket. I also included a spdt switch to select whether it is running on only one single AA battery or if both included cells of the zapper are used. Running at 1.5V the zapper is quiet and only zapps when an insect is near the zapping plate. When run in 3V mode, continuous zapping with loud sparks happens all over the plate, mostly on a few single spots.
This build is so much fun to zap things with, as even a short swosh through the air definately takes out every creature near by. You can even clean your bed with it zapping, as a static charge will catch small debree on the metal gates on the tennis racket like plate of this device. Small tapping on the handle will release all partikles.
The power consumption is around 1A on both modes, so somewhere between 1.5W and 3W.
Even operated with NiMh cells it is working reliable. To get the indicator LED of the zapper running on the single cell mode, i used a energy thief circuit. This allowed me to even change the LED to a high power 5mm ultra bright diode, which adds to the whole experience using the device.
I don't regret investing the time this conversion took and would alleays do it again.
From the beginning i planned for the inclusion for an ESP8266, which allows for integration in my smarthome. Count zapped things over the year and generate statistics. Through the inclusion of a small mosfet even the following is now reality:

When we get certified for use of stunguns we have to enjoy the experience of receiving a rather lengthy demonstration of the power, usually resulting in a ear splitting scream usually reserved for scared 6 year old girls or in my case a 300 pound hog screaming like a jet on take off. I always choose to be the first, because if I watched after the first one I'd be gone and since I'm the Officer In Charge, I have to go through the certification. My best friend shot me with a stungun that fire probes. I was nervous, stunguns had just came out and we got some of the fist made for the Corps. So I'm facing my mate and I hear TAZER TAZER TAZER! He fired, one probe hiit me right on the hip bone, the other dead center in my left nipple. The there was Light, and I knew I was dead. When it was just us Officers they would call me "Proby" we also made him a huge medal that had a cardboard medallion that had a drawing of a nipple with a probe and we called it the "Order of the Nipple"

a bill banning fire is in the next session of parliament. i have noticed a trend towards this over the last few years. christingle a local custom involving candles and small children. have banned real candles in favour of the artificial ones on the grounds that the little sods may set fire to each others hair. i miss the screaming as they drip hot wax over there hands, or each other.

@@DerH0ns These modules also have capacitors, not one but 3 across the high voltage terminals.
The voltage on on fly zappers can be anywhere from 400v to 2500v. The distance across the mesh will vary according to the voltage.
If you current limit this module, you can get lower voltage levels easily.
The change which you need to make is to put additional capacitor with across the high voltage terminals with much smaller bleed resistor to prevent the fast discharge.
The capacitors inside this module have 1.5mega ohm resistor as a bleeder so it discharges it within half a second or less.
Now all you need to do is order 3 mesh, top and bottom one should have large hole size to allow easy mosquito entry and the one in between on should be small enough to not allow any mosquito to pass through. I used mesh size 5 for top and bottom and mesh size 40 for the middle layer.
Now, find out which one is the ground or negative on this module by putting the terminals in the water, whichever terminal has bubbles surrounding it is your negative terminal.
Connect negative terminal to the middle mesh and outer two meshes to the postive one and there you go!
Use a push button to charge the capacitors and discharge it on the target, the one I made lacks the bleed resistor for longer operation time after charge.
I forgot, I used single 18650 cell with 1 ohm resistor (to current limit) the module and output voltage and my mesh are 4mm apart.
Keep in mind without the resistor, if you keep your modules button pressed your module will burn due to overcurrent. I've made another top level comment on this video which explains why this happens.
Hi! I'm actually using these for some scientific experiments and we therefore had to do a couple of measurements on those. We hooked it up to a high voltage resistor, split the voltage 2 ways and hooked it up to an oscillator. We have measured the frequency of the circuit to be roughly around 10 kHz (as far as I remember...) with peak voltage around 13 kV. I'm still getting around to cutting it open with a dremel, but I also plan to use a CT to map the insides. Thanks very much for this video, it has actually provided a lot of insight for me ;)

There is actually more to that, the reason you would be aiming for the base of someone's spine is that for quite a significant portion of the spinal column the nerves will all be bunched together into this thick cable like arrangement with individual isolating layers, but near the base of the spine, the nerve bundles that handle operations of your legs and everything close to them split back into separated wires that then go to their own designated areas. This part is called the (and I just know I'm going to butcher this, since Latin is not my first language and it's been years since we learned this at university) cauda equina, or horse tail. This is the area you'd want to tap for maximum carnage, since the gradient would hit a ton of nerves at different positions, and unceremoniously cause someone to crumple to the floor in horrible agony while simultaneously soiling their trousers in every way imaginable...

I built 2 electric fly swatters with these in them... they vaporize any sort of flies and can protect me from thieves ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. They work still after a year perfect, that's pretty impressiv compared what i've red that they "break" really fast

As the length of the arc goes up,, the voltage goes up. This is due to the colapsing magnetic field. And this is why we were told not to stop a lawn mower by pulling the spark plug wire. And that is why they put a shorting strap at the end of the spark plug.

When the electrical path is broken, the voltage goes up to the point that the current finds a path inside the curcuitry. And often times that is inside the coil itself. Once a carbon track is made, the coil is broken, shot, kaput, fried, no good.ect...

so if I put the output wires close together and make the arc smaller like bigclive demonstrated in the vid , they will last longer? so a shorter arc will protect the circuit more? ( sorry I'm a noob to electronics I want to use these for a project and need the module to last more than 5 minutes).
So willy should of said: As the voltage goes up, the length of the arc goes up? all I want to know is if I shorten the length of the arc will this reduce the chance of damaging the module? as this will lessen resistance so the current doesn't find its way into the module to damage it? @@fluffyhead6377 Yes, it will help protect it. Basically if the unit makes a continuous arc when it is running, it is a happy bunny. If however the output leads are too far apart, the voltage can rise too much (no load) and it will wreck the module. Played around with a couple of these modules and they do NOT survive even a few seconds at full input voltage and output leads too far apart.
@Yuck Foutube I think you are a bit out there - possibly just missed out a decimal point?
If this was correct, then the 40-60KW from the back of an old colour CRT type TV should arc around 700mm In reality it will strike an arc about 2 - 4 cm (give or take). Sure, once the air is ionized, you can "pull it" much further. DC will also allow for a longer arc as it doesn't extinguish twice per cycle.
Also, take into account that many 250v mains rated switches only have a contact separation of a couple of mm.
1KV rated switchgear typically has a contact gap of about 6mm - and that is to ensure there is ZERO chance of arc over.
I had one of them which pushed 1v up to 100000v... paired it with a 18650, a switch and a 5v usb lipo charging board and placed everything in an empty notebook power supply. 👍 works great but scary af
these were quite the thing in 2017. still very useful even today for making stun guns.
I bought one to replace the trembler coil on a Model T Ford buzz coil box. It's also great for firing up my pulse Jet motor.

I remember seeing an amateur electronics handbook which detailed how to make one of these from wine corks and nails. with a breakaway prong and wire extension. And a bunch of other plans for making dangerous or sketchy devices. This book was found in a high school library in the mid 90s.

What is the current draw at various input voltages, such as when connected to two AA batteries I wonder?
I've ordered one and it says 3-6V, so am keen to see what size gap the spark can jump when powered from a 6vdc input from a power supply and how much it draws. :-)
Stun guns are illegal in Australia, at least the state I live in. These however are shipped from within that state on eBay for $5. Guess there's some loophole going on. Either way thanks, because I've bought a couple.

Danielle Harris I thought similar with hasp on shed with a PIR or radar sensor to switch it on if anyone was around. You still need a spark gap as the will burn out also only rated for around 30 sec bursts. Think it would be illegal though.

I bought a pair last year when JulianIlett tried one and jumped out of his skin. Everytime i run mine (even in the garden) it tends to kill bits of my home automation system. I've seen them used as emp killers.

Tech note if you have a Hot Air station you can sometimes soften 2pt epoxy and some other potting materials letting you peel it out like snot, Set temp about 115-145f and heat just enough that it becomes pliable This also has worked for me with the Tar used to seal some consumer fireworks.

Whoa ive never seen a PEGI 18 video before!
When I worked in a store developing film and enlarging photos we had to take out the film from one time use cameras and it had a flash which was a huge problem. So after opening the camera to take out the film the first thing you did was short out the capacitor for the flash with a screwdriver to avoid getting zapped, it always made a quite loud bang and made dents into the metal of the screwdriver when you shorted it.
Those were not dents.. that was metal vaporizing.
Same principle as the old electronic car ignition units, popular some years ago, using a thyristor triggered by the points to dump a capacitor charge of around 300v through the coil primary for a more reliable pulse across the spark plug.

I removed the spark unit from an old gas cooker a few yrs ago , it has a similar output but the frequency of the spark is lower. I used it to set off a hairspray fueled spud gun but it left a small hole in my living room ceiling.. oh how I laughed , 'till the missus saw it...

I,ve boiled my hv generator in hot oil .to get a closer look in side . it seems to be voltage trippler. one coil feed back . a transistor 3 hv cap two close contacts for spark gap . i enjoy your channel. thank you.

yes, cds draw too much current and the main driver tranny pops, the cd is effectively a short although for some reason, they cause more damage than actually shorting the leads...maybe because directly shorting the leads isnt fun and we only do it for a fraction of a second, not 10s of a seconds

Could you work this into a squirrel proof bird feeder. Stimulate their nerves.
I like the idea, but you'd need some way to trigger it only when a squirrel is present. Otherwise, the generator will probably burn out. Even if it doesn't, the constant arcing would be annoying.
How about a long tube that fits over the bird feeder pole; two bare wires spiral in parallel down the tube; the squirrel's weight on the tube triggers a power switch...
Better off with an electric fence controller. I have a bird feeder on a wooden post with two leads spiraled around it from the controller. You need a + lead and ground lead for the squirrel to ground out. Birds never land on the post so they are safe. You can tell how much the squirrels love it by the way they ricochet about the yard while running away.

Oh god yes, I have like 4 of these (exact same model), yes they are stun guns, they have the two stages of the stun gun, super high voltage and a lower but more powerful pulse embedded in the high voltage, jolly good fun they are.
Hi Clive I did brake a faulty one of these. The secondary was a multi section bobbin with around six sections. Sure it was an ac output as could get smoke partials attracted to both wires depending on with was the plate or pins. I had sent you one of these in the past when you had a look at the faulty 20w floods for me. The box had led pilot indicators and drill bits. The listing said 6v to 4kv. Also had a shock by accident so it was a shock too felt like the same as I had in my teens when I used to fix TVs very powerful thud.

Touch the output of a TV flyback and you end up across the room and probably dead. I fixed a TV a while back and the high voltage horizontal deflection transistor had over 600V DC on its collector pin. I took extra special care not to touch it.
Haha....I didn't have to touch it to know it's was bad...just spent $2.38, patiently waited and when arrived hooked it to a 9V and just smiled after I shit my pants a little HAHAHA
Best not a 9v if you don't know if it can handle it, start with 3 and work your way up.
Use the 5V output from an ATX power supply. Easily capable of more than enough current to drive this.
try a power bank. But keep in mind theses zappers draw currents far in excess of 1.5A.
I would not recommend using electronic power supplies to run these, they take awul pulse loads and shoot back terrible voltages and noise all over the shop. Batteries don't care as much.
MyBigThing2010 the other thing with using a mains power supply is even though it may output 5v it is likely to be referenced to mains. Remember not long back a girl dropped her mobile in the bath which was only connected by a USB lead.

They use those modules in those LED flashlight / Stun guns mainly. The flashlights run off a 16850 Li-Ion cell and typically have a charger circuit built into them also

My friends and I brought one of these to school, and used a sharpie to notate different muscle groups on our arms, and shocked them and we were able to move our arms with it. The vice principal walked over and asked what was going on, and surprisingly walked away after and let us continue or dangerous science. This was like a year ago, before the pandemic

I've got the same or very similar one and it definitely is either HV multiplier or single very small flyback. I use it to power old NV goggles.
I read that they increased the amperage, certainly in the military/law enforcement devices, which makes them extremely effective.
Hey! A European that agrees that weapon laws aren't blessings from altruistic government, and that maybe once in a while they have ulterior motives for doing that. We might not agree on what constitutes excessive, but we can agree that what you guys have is excessive.
The latest trend across "fly over country" where I live, is an end to the requirement to pass some sort of test, or background check before you can carry your firearm concealed, locked and loaded! North Dakota passed the law a couple of years ago, in South Dakota (where I have my concealed carry permit) the bill is setting on our very conservative Governor's desk awaiting her signature, is should come tomorrow. It is called by those who are trying to get this passed nation wide, the "Constitutional Carry Law. They are in hopes to get the law changed till it is the law of the land, and any man, or woman over the age of 21 can legally carry a loaded firearm on their person, in their cars, and of course in their homes. It should prove to be a good thing, in States that have had this law for many years, a sever drop in crime has been noted, especially in burglary, home invasion and car-jacking incidents. What criminal in their right mind would try to car-jack from someone who has the legal right, and ability to carry a loaded gun. Many of the States also have the "Stand your Ground" laws, so have no legal responsibility to run away from a fight when crime comes their way. I am sure these laws stand no chance in the coast areas of our nation, where liberal gather and wring their hands at the approach of freedom and personal responsibility, and that is where these slaughters that happen in the schools and such usually happen. Sure there was the one in Vegas, but that is an entirely different world from the rest of the US, and with all the people we have here, such shit is bound to happen from time to time, but overall we are a pretty much law abiding bunch, here in fly over country, where the sheriff can be 100 miles away, the cops 40 miles away, and the criminal at your window. We take care of our own, and our neighbors, sometimes it takes a handgun, sometimes it take an AR-15 but in the end, we do what must be done, when the shit hits the fan.

I used one of the smaller brothers of these to charge a capacitor the size of my upper leg. It was quite spectacular to discharge it according to safety regulations.
I used to work for an electronics manufacturer. That potting material is very hard to remove but it is possible. Use a heat gun to soften the material and then you can slowly pick it out. You may end up ripping some of the small SMT components, or in this case fine wiring, but it is still possible.

It's not illegal to defend yourself. And at least if these are illegal, it keeps them out of the hands of the people who want to stab and rob you.
You can get hold of these on the black market but they're very rare. I vaguely know, or have known, the sort of people who might be able to get this sort of thing. But nobody's ever actually shown me one. So the ban is pretty effective.
The thing about carrying a weapon is, you have to be sure your assailant can't take it off you. Cos then you're double-fucked, you've just armed the bloke, and he's incredibly pissed off because you tried to electrocute him. It's not like Arnie films where you make a sarky remark and he fucks off crying. The best defence is a good pair of running shoes.

Well ya got part of the circuit for these particular modules right. Good explanation on stun guns though. I've actually bought a few of these things a little back, burnt one out, and actually went threw the hastel of slowly carving then entire epoxy fill away with an exacto knife. Couple days and many marks on my fingers from the knife later, i had a circuit diagram of the module.(maybe ill go find it again if anyone wants). On the HV side it uses a variant of a Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier, 3x i think, but there was something weird about it. that charges 3 series capacitors that give you your spark. there is a discharge resistor in place as well. anyways i did manage to get some values from testing the components off the dead one, diodes were fine, but the main HV caps seam to be the failure point. they seam WAY under rated for this application. Oh, and these things make for a great ignition source on potato cannons. If anyone wants ill go and find my circuit diagram findings on this thing.

I use one of these along with a constant current regulator board in a DIY powder coating electrostatic gun that i hook up to my air compressor to blow the powder. Its basically some PVC pipe with a T fitting and one side of the top of the T plugged. The bottom of the T is attached to a threaded cap for a glass bottle which holds the poweder. The plugged side of the T has an air coupling on it, along with a piece of tubing that runs through the plug and down into the bottle. The electricity bit connects to a piece of copper solid wire that runs down the main piece of PVC tubing and every inch is a piece soldered to it which keeps everything centered. So air is blown into the bottle which blows the powder up and through the threaded bit, then down the tube with the copper thats electrified. This charges the powder and it sticks to any grounded metal just like a $400 gun. Works great, not one shock. And so far i've gone through 5 pounds of powder using the gun on various projects. screw paint. powdercoat rules.
