I don't understand why there aren't 20 of these when 747's are being de-commissioned from commercial travel all the time. Re purpose them and use them for the fires? If there was a dozen of these suckers dispatched when larger fires spat out you can stop wildfires in no time flat.
Another consideration: there aren't that many tanker bases that can support VLATs like the 747 or DC-10, and the retardant amounts required to run a fleet of VLATs ... I don't know how they would keep up with a constant load & return cycle.
It's so sad that the 747 Supertanker was internally dismantled and sold. It had minor issues and in my opinion, those were used to kill it, and protect contracts with other contractors.
