  • All of us fall for bull crap, but how can we avoid it? Well, for starters, it's good to be aware of these eight reasons why we fall for bull crap in the first place.

So why do we believe bull crap? Why can’t we critically think? Or why do we find critical thinking so difficult?
Well, first of all, we mostly rely on our brains to work in default mode.
Our brains are wired to find quick answers
Our brains are constantly trying to look for shortcuts and patterns. There’s even a fancy name for this. Psychologists call this heuristics. Basically, a heuristic is any approach to finding a quick solution or reaching a quick conclusion that is not the best or even rational, but it’s good enough so we can go on with our lives. Heuristics are cognitive shortcuts that we develop through our past experiences, and they come in pretty handy. Imagine having to stress out over every single decision in life. It’d be difficult to get anything done. Enter heuristics, so that our brains can save energy and work more efficiently. But those shortcuts don’t always help us.
So check it out. There was a 2008 CalTech study in which scientists hooked up an fMRI to subjects and presented them with different glasses of wine, labeled from $5 all the way up to $90. However, the scientists never told the subjects that the wine in every single glass was actually the exact same. Subjects tried both wines, and later reported the $90 tasted better. More importantly, the medial prefrontal cortex of their brains for these same folks became more active when they were tasting the wine. This part of the brain is important for decision making, planning future events, and reward comparison. So basically, that part of their brains became active not due to true sensory signals or inherent qualities, but to SIGNALS of quality. Like the labels.
Our brains can fool us due to being stuck in default mode. In fact, brain teasers exist as a way we can escape our default mode.
    We don’t evaluate credibility
We often just accept new information as it is given to us. Whether we actually admit it or not, we often automatically trust a source no matter what it is.
    Speaking of biases…
    We all have confirmation bias
Confirmation bias is the tendency of people to favor information that confirms their existing beliefs or hypotheses. We see it when folks pick information that supports their own views, when they ignore information that hurts their views, but especially looking at how people think when they interact with ambiguous evidence. Let’s pretend your existing beliefs or hypotheses are this bucket. It’s actually fairly easy to take bits of information from all over the place to neatly fit into your bucket. You can even cherry pick data or put a lid on that bucket to keep out all new data. It’s pretty convenient.
One of the most common ways con artists persuade people is by tapping into their existing emotions. Fear and anger especially work well. Getting folks scared or angry is a great way to get them to believe bull crap, as these emotions make them less likely to think rationally.

I notice the people who complain about others lack of critical thinking often act as if they are not guilty of the same. Plenty of wars have been started by two groups "critically thinking" and coming up with two different outcomes.

Most people would rather be told what to think as opposed how to think. And I think another issue is a huge overabundance of information that conflicts with each other, which makes it harder to discern who is telling the truth.

Love it, Mr. Beat! Film suggestions:
    1) Leon (The Professional)
    2) Life is Beautiful
    3) Silence of the Lambs
    4) Unforgiven
    5) Reservoir Dogs
    6) Pulp Fiction
    7) The Tiger in the Snow
    8) The Hunt for Red October
    9) True Grit - A comparison (personally, I like the Jeff Bridges version, but hard to beat The Duke!)
    10) Alien (The epic series)
Honorable mentions: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, Kung Fu Hustle, Rocky Horror Picture Show, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
These films are all in my 5 star category. It is elite status, as the movie must have top ratings in story, plot, writing, casting, costuming, setting, cinematography, watchability, music score and re-watchability (this is the key distinction between a 4 and a 5. If it has everything, but I never need or want to see it again, it is a 4).
Before Netflix wiped out it's original rating system, I had rated OVER 6000 movies.
Phew! Sorry for the long comment!

Seriously tho, you point out something really really important for all people to realize. During my college years, i both theoretically/practically learned how to avoid these biases (to the best of my capabilities)… or mind-shortcuts? Via the scientific method and try and maximise objectivity. Still, outside a “research” environment (where you are constantly aware of human bias/assumptions/shortcuts), I fall prey to these “blind assumptions” all the time. And I am aware this is a thing.... doesn't matter. So for the part of the population that is unaware of these biases.... Ahh, this actually explains like everything that is happening right now.
Also, I think like every human is susceptible to this.
e.g. yeah Newton (arguably) invented calculus.... but he also was under the impression that drinking mercury was an overall desirable thing to do, repeatedly. So he did. Like everyone has their BS beliefs. Thats how we role. So be aware of it at least.
So I am really happy you call out on this. More people should!
...It also (with some given knowledge about algorithmic machine learning), might aid in the realisation that we all massively underestimated the effect of social media algorithms (that just aim to maximise profit, oh, and also the realisation that strong emotions yield more platform activity. Like anger. So, favour more extreme/polarising posts. That'll gain way more moneyyyy I mean user activity.). Where was I? Oh, yeah that those algorithms affect society way way way more than we like to admit. And maybe the question of, should me make laws about the algorithms of these "globally" used platforms.
I am totally getting ahead of myself tho, only at 6:15. Totally expect this video to at least touch upon this.
Sorry for the ramblings. TLDR I am happy you made this video, pointing this out as very few talk about this…
and recently it has been more relevant than ever, I feel.
Edit: after watching it all... yeah. Great video. Thanks!

Hello Mr. Beat, I was wondering why you put Bjorn Lomborg into scientists who have disputed that global warming is real? As far as I know, he does acknowledge global warming, but argues the way we are trying to solve is not the right way. Claiming that more should be done to increase our consumption of green technologies and reducing prizes on green energy in general instead of globally try and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Is it because you think its the wrong approach, maybe we cannot reduce prizes on green energy quick enough and low enough to where its cheaper and therefore naturally higher demand than fossil fuels?
Personally I think it would be great if there were more balance, maybe its because im not informed enough, but it seems there is mostly a movement to reduce our CO2 emissions and not so much on what can be done to increase green energy? Of course, if one goes down the other must go up - balanced as everything should be - maybe its just overall because of low effort taken all around the world against global warming.

Being emotional about a topic such as a murder does not mean that the victim's mother's argument about justice is invalid because it is illogical. We all have bias and that is okay. Being ignorant of bias is the issue; understand that just because you understand in issue one way doesn't make other understandings of the same information inherently invalid. Ok so I know this is out of the blue and this band is not too old because they still make songs but started back in I think around the 2000s and I dont know if you take request but can you do the history of volbeat I love them and have known them my entire life they are pretty cool and is called the rock version of elvis but the made a warriors call and still counting and it was from a time when I was living with my mother and my papa who is now away from me and it's from a time when they did not do bad stuff and ofc when they sold illegal stuff and stole and I would have to go along with my sister who know hates me but I'm obsessed with them because of how it reminds me of my papa I love him so much and when my family tells me he uses people I get really hurt buy I hope you read this and maby make a video about how they were formed but of course you might not see this i will check everyday to see if you make it even if you dont I'll still like your channle thank you...thank you.

11:34, From my understanding (and it's limited and biased) the reason the scientific community overwhelmingly attributes climate change to humans is due to all the models only accounting for the UV input from the Sun (excluding the majority of the electromagnetic spectrum)
Obviously, this should be easy to prove or debunk right? What's more important, making sure we're right or making sure we're not all wrong?

    • @eoghan.5003
      @eoghan.5003 2 роки тому

Yes, what you said is easy to disprove. Here we go: if scientists were only factoring in some of the EM radiation (and you haven't given any evidence to suggest they are) this would throw calculations off, but not regarding a CHANGE in the climate as this error would apply across time.

    • @TheRadioAteMyTV
      @TheRadioAteMyTV Рік тому

Or it could be that the scientific community is bigger than climate scientists and thus includes a bunch of people just guessing instead of those who work with the actual data, since we rare are shown what the climatologists and meteorologists have to say on the issue, instead we get, like you said, "the scientific community" and their thoughts.
Or it could be that models reliability is far from ideal and admitting that would endanger countless jobs. Models are used because they are cheaper and safer, not because they are more reliable. The real world test is the only ones that matter in the end.
Or it could be that going against the political grain will without a doubt affect people's funding to proceed.
Or it could be the rampant fraudulent work being cranked out and the growing number of failed "peer reviews" that were designed to catch stuff, but were turned into assurances to keep professors published and thereby creating an industry filled with corruption that relies on compliance or else the integrity monster will wipe it all out and all the jobs along with it in the review industry and the professors relying on it to keep their jobs.
"Easy to prove or debunk" in the sense of testing or in the sense of moving people invested in the outcome? They are far from the same thing.
