    • Ferris Bueller's Day O...
Today Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is considered not only one of the best high school comedies, but one of the best COMEDIES of all time. It’s still one of those rare films that people will watch repeatedly, and although it will always have a special place in the hearts and minds of those who identify as Generation X, it resonates arguably just as much with younger generations.
There is no denying its huge cultural impact. Whether it be catchphrases (Bueller? Bueller?”) that are still regularly brought up, or parodies of the film, it is easily recognizable. Broderick, who was nominated for the film for a Golden Globe Award in 1987 in the Best Actor- Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category, later said the role was his most famous one in his long and storied career. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off heavily influenced all future teen films. The bands Save Ferris and Rooney even got their names in reference to the film. Heck, even Barbara Bush used dialogue from the film at a commencement speech at Wellesley College in 1990.
That same year, Ferris Bueller, a spin off TV series featuring none other than Jennifer Aniston as Jeannie Bueller, debuted on NBC. Yeah it got cancelled after one season.
In 2014, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” In 2020, most of the cast reunited for a big zoom call on Josh Gad’s UA-cam channel.
Today, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is referred to as a classic, yet it does remain relevant not really because it’s still funny, but because it really does have an inspiring and universal message. A message to reevaluate our lives...to hit the pause button and question why we are doing what we are doing...to escape the hustle and make sure we are really staying true to ourselves...to get away to make sure we want to return. In other words, this film still reminds us that we could all use another day off.

Cameron isn't the only character to experience a transformation in the movie, Jeanie and Salone also have some sort of transformation.

I was already out of high school by the time this movie came out, but could still relate to a lot of it. Fantastic, timeless movie.

And I watched it for the first time in 2000, just after I graduated high school. It definitely felt relevant to me as well.

Can confirm that it is timeless and great, as I was born 10 years after the movie came out and saw it for the first time in high school and I loved it.

My two favorite parts are when he's running to beat his parents home and when they're at the Cubs game and Ferris says, "Hey, Cameron. You realize if we played by the rules right now we'd be in gym?" lol. The whole movie is great and literally takes place in the year I was born so I love looking at all the old mid 80's aesthetics. Also Chicago is a cool city and the movie really is a love letter to Chicago in '86.

“It’s ridiculous.....being afraid, worrying about everything, wishing I was dead, all that shit. I’m tired of it.” - Cameron Frye
Relating to Cameron's speech, I planned a solo trip to England and Scotland in 1987. My friends and family were shocked, as all my life I had been a serious wuss.

Funny you mentioned Winnetka. The house where Home Alone and Home Alone 2 was filmed, is in Winnetka. John Hughes and Chicago are synonymous in the filming world.

    • @mattbeatgoeson

Yep, I've also visited Home Alone filming locations there. In fact, the exterior shot for Ferris's mom's work is the same building as where Kevin McCallister stole a toothbrush.

Mr. Beat, theres no other way to put this. You're one of the most competent, wisdom-filled, analytical people on this site. Your "Brief History of Nirvana" video came out when I started getting into them, and your video played on a lot in that. They're extremely influential to me, and a lot of that is because of you. I love what you do, please never stop. No pressure

Hughes also had a general disregard for how so many movies were set in NYC. That's why I believe most of his movies take place somewhere in the midwest, i.e. _Home_ _Alone,_ _Milwaukee._ in 1990.

Great video with a lot of info that I had no idea about! I saw this in the theater in 1986 - I was 14 and developed a huge crush on Matthew Broderick. It’s also responsible for making me become a huge Beatles fan, and they’re my favorite group to this day. Sadly I haven’t visited Chicago (despite growing up and living in the Midwest), but when I do go I want to check out some of these filming locations! Iconic film and still funny today, I think. Thanks for your video!!

The Kids in the Hall is having a reunion series on Amazon soon, how about their story? I was way too young to understand it when it debuted and only knew it as the SNL where the guys put on dresses and makeup.
That or The State, which had a LOT of familiar faces and would also be a way to get into how MTV did original series production. Seeing anything last more than a couple of seasons on there is rare as hell.

OMG - the original cut was 2 hours 45 mins?? Where, oh where can I dig this up?? It would be a top 10 movie again if they re-released the whole thing. I mean, directors sometimes have to make tough decisions around the length of a movie, leaving out some really great material. But the truth is, footage usually ends up on the cutting room floor for a reason. But I don't care! I'd still go to see it.
